Very loving, sweet, and always having fun - that’s how Jacquelyn Sauder Iannello describes her older sister Megan Sauder Ralston. With two and a half years between them in age, the sisters - who are the youngest daughters of John and Bonita Sauder of Lititz - grew up doing nearly everything together and had a friendship that strengthened into adulthood. Megan graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School and went on to play Division I field hockey at Virginia Commonwealth University and earn a Master of Teaching in 2011. She taught first-grade in the Washington, D.C., area and married the love of her life, John Ralston, in 2013. In 2016, after finding a small lump in her breast about six months after giving birth to her son, Bryce, Megan - who was living in Charlottesville, Va., at the time and had no family history of breast cancer - made an OB-GYN appointment and was told by two doctors that the lump was a blocked milk duct. “She was nursing at the time, and the doctors said it was going to go away,” said Jacquelyn. “She was misdiagnosed.” Megan’s pain continued to increase to the point of being unable to lift her son. She returned to the doctor weeks later and was directed to a breast care clinic where she had a See Thrive And Grit pg 4

mammogram, ultrasound, and biopsy completed within the week. She was diagnosed with a pregnancy-related breast cancer five days after her 30th birthday. Inspired by the sense of support she received from her community and other women battling cancer as she began undergoing treatment, Megan wanted to start an organization with the goal of creating awareness, donating toward research, and supporting others battling breast cancer. Megan and Jacquelyn established Thrive and Grit in 2017 with a mission of pushing people to thrive under extraordinary circumstances with grit and perseverance.

On Nov. 13, 2018, Megan passed away at age 31. “Through everything she never lost faith. She had such strong faith, and that was her rock through everything,” said Jacquelyn, who is continuing the work of Thrive and Grit. Megan embodied kindness and had wanted to host a catered meal for the doctors and nurses at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute to thank them for the wonderful care she received. Her family and Thrive and Grit were able to make her idea a reality last December, and Jacquelyn hopes to repeat that event in the future. Pink Packages are another signature effort of Thrive and Grit. Jacquelyn and other volunteers create and deliver uplifting boxes filled with gift cards for cleaning services and meal deliveries and other

helpful items and goodies to assist women of all ages going through breast cancer treatment. “Sometimes you’re in there for hours and you just need something to eat or something encouraging,” noted Jacquelyn. Thrive and Grit also donates to metastatic (stage four) breast cancer research at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, a cutting-edge research hospital Megan traveled to. “She really wanted us to continue (Thrive and Grit), and it is healing to keep it going,” reflected Jacquelyn. “She wanted to help people and tell her story. If we can help just one person (by sharing Megan’s story), it’s worth it.” To learn more about supporting the mission of Thrive and Grit, readers may visit www.thriveandgrit.org.

“She really wanted other people to hear her story,” said Jacquelyn. “Just because you’re young doesn’t mean it can’t happen, and there definitely needs to be that awareness. Be your own advocate and push for testing if something isn’t right.” Thrive and Grit kicked off its efforts with a Pups in Pink event at Lancaster’s Buchanan Park in 2017 and started Megan’s Fund at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute in Lancaster to financially support women under the age of 40 by helping to pay for mammograms, ultrasounds, genetic screening, early detection tools, and more. Jacquelyn noted that oftentimes insurance companies require women to be 40 years or older to qualify for assistance, and Thrive and Grit aims to fill that gap.

Remembrance Gathering from pg 1 Sweet Pea Project will hold its 10th annual Remembrance Gathering in observance of National Remembrance Day, for babies who died during pregnancy or infancy, on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Lititz Springs Park, 18 N. Broad St., Lititz. The event will take place rain or shine. As the sun sets, the stream will be filled with candles and lined with flowers, and there will be music. The community - including bereaved families, their friends, neighbors, co-workers, medical staff, and anyone who has had their lives touched by loss - is invited to the event. Families may write short messages to their children on candles and float the candles down the flower-lined stream. Bobbi Carmitchell will provide musical accompaniment as each child’s name is read. Founder Stephanie Cole, whose daughter

Madeline would approach her 13th birthday this winter, wanted to add a special element in honor of the event’s 10th year. Cole decided to incorporate wind chimes - one for each family that has lost a child or children. Thanks to a donation, bereaved parents will be able to take a wind chime home with them. Parents may come to the pavilion following the event to pick up their wind chime. Only one wind chime will be given to each family, even if that family has suffered multiple losses. Wind chimes are for parents only, because of limited supply. Participants are asked to arrive between 5:30 and 6 p.m. to ensure enough time to personalize their candle. Names will be read as the sun sets, at approximately 6:20 p.m. Sweet treats will be available. Donations are not required but will be accepted. The event will be free, but registration is

required. To register, readers may visit https://sppremember.wufoo.com/forms/zp ub0x10y1wd28/. The Polka Quads will present a concert of Cleveland-style polka music on Sunday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. at the Eicher Arts Center, 407 Cocalico St., in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park. Leading the Polka Quads and playing accordion will be John Salov of Steelton in Dauphin County. According to Salov, Cleveland-style polka music is based on the tradition of immigrants from Croatia and Slovenia, and it features the accordion prominently. Salov said he was inspired to play the accordion and lead a polka band by the music of Cleveland’s Frankie Yankovic. Yankovic won the title of “America’s Polka King” at a band competition in 1948. stress disorder (PTSD), which has been in the national conversation with regard to veterans and its close cousin, acute stress disorder.” Chakara explained that he plans to discuss the weight of the issue and, based on current research, how the problems associated with stress disorders can be managed. “(This event is) an invitation to think about this with people of faith,” said Chakara. “(To explore) what … Scripture says about the aspects of suffering and trauma.” Wissler noted that the discussion will range beyond the coverage stress disorders in veterans have garnered to include first responders, police, and events that affect the larger community. Myers, who has been involved with the event since its inception, said that the prayer room and display area will be open prior to the service as well as after. “We have had the prayer room normally open just at the end of the (event),” she noted. “(This year), we will have it at the beginning as well as the end to give more opportunity for people to pray.” Some of the Scripture for this year’s event is from 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, which reads, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.” Myers explained that a special station will be available to bring added meaning to this verse. “We will have … a basin of water, and we will have disappearing paper,” she explained. “People can write words (associated with) things they have suffered, and when they put (the paper) in the water, they can watch the suffering dissolve, symbolizing how God can help us work through the trauma and suffering.” There is no cost to attend the service, and registration is not necessary. A freewill offering will be received to defray expenses associated with the event. A portion of the offering will be designated for Faith and Friendship Ministries, which is the sponsor of the service. Readers who have questions may call 717-390-4891 or 717-285-5596.

HOPE International from pg 1 three regional kingdom-minded entrepreneurs who will answer the question ‘Who believed in you?’” explained Boycan. “Most successful business people didn’t get there by themselves.” The three entrepreneurs will be Andrew Samuel, founder, chairman, and CEO of LinkBank; David Millary, president of EDUPlus International Inc.; and Crystal Weaver, Lancaster-based entrepreneur and cofounder and COO of The Commons Co. and co-owner of Passenger Coffee Roasters, Prince Street Café, and Blue Line Lancaster. Boycan believes the panel discussion will exemplify HOPE’s mission. “That’s what those people (who believed in) the entrepreneurs (did for them),” he said. “They invested in them. That’s what we do. We reach out to people who are underserved and marginalized and vulnerable, and we believe in them.” HOPE provided $5,000 in loans in its first year of existence. HOPE had loaned out $161 million by 2008, and in the last 10 years, $1.36 billion has been loaned. HOPE now serves 965,000 clients in 16 countries. “I did the math,” noted Boycan. “If all of our clients stood hand-in-hand, it would take us from Lancaster to Jacksonville, Fla.” Further, Boy-

can noted, “If you laid $1.36 billion dollar bills end-to-end, they would go around the world five times.” Boycan thinks those who attend the breakfast will have opportunities to learn from the experience. “We think it will be an inspiring morning,” he said. “All of us have the opportunity to believe in others where some may not see their potential. That’s what HOPE is about, and (at the breakfast), we hope to inspire people to believe in what we’re doing.” Boycan recalled that the 2018 breakfast was held on a morning when the area received a surprise snowfall of six inches. This year, he hopes for better weather and to see 300 or more people attend the event. Readers who would like to learn more about the breakfast may visit www.hopeinternational.org/lancasterbreakfast. There is no cost to attend the breakfast; however, reservations must be made by Friday, Nov. 15. Individuals may register by calling 717464-3220, ext. 554, or emailing Jbeachy@hopeinternational.org

CV Volleyball Holds Off Township 3-2 by Leah Sintic

Despite surrendering 3-0 losses to Lancaster Catholic and Hempfield on Tuesday and Thursday of last week, CV celebrated a big triumph early on in the week, overcoming Manheim Township, 3-2. On Monday, Sept. 30, the squad took down Township in a thrilling comeback, treating their home crowd to a dramatic five-game bout, (5-25, 23-25, 26-24, 25-19, 15-11). After a hesitant start and dropping the first two games, things weren’t looking good for the Lady Bucks, but they turned things around when the third set extended to extra points in their favor, 26-24, instead of allowing Township to close the contest. “It was a great win for our program,” celebrated head coach Dewey Barlow. “The girls showed a lot of heart, character, and especially leadership from our upperclassmen.” Riding their momentum surge into

the fourth, CeCe Leininger paced the offense with 11 kills and three aces, matched by another three aces from Rebecca Hartranft. Charlize Miller was another notable part of the comeback, putting up 29 setter assists. Big defensive moments, including five blocks from Lexi McEvoy, and 18 digs from Meghan Glick, created major momentum shifts and ignited the Buckskin surge. “We received a huge spark from our JV libero, Meghan Glick, who was inserted into the lineup beginning with the third set,” praised Barlow. Barlow went on to point out the overall team effort and the excitement of the milestone win, the first time in four years the team has topped Township in girls varsity volleyball. When asked what he’s most excited to see in action on the court, Barlow responded, “It’s seeing the girls being rewarded for all their hard

work and their desire to succeed.” FOOTBALL Buckskin football also provided a come-from-behind win to reward an enthusiastic home crowd in their September 27th triumph over Garden Spot, 37-25, giving the Bucks their second consecutive league victory. Conestoga walked away with the win, but the opening period belonged entirely to Garden Spot. Two quick trips into the end zone, a two-point conversion, and a field goal combined for an 18-0 Spartan lead heading into the second period. “We got off to a slow start,” acknowledged head coach Gerad Novak. “The players settled down and started making plays, and our

confidence grew as the game progressed.” CV turned the tide with back-to-back quarters where they combined a successful offense working in tandem with a defense that completely shut down the Spartans. Conestoga kicker Nathan Heck got the Bucks on the scoreboard with his 20-yard field goal, triggering a 31-0 run for the Buckskins. “Once the offense moved the ball and put points on the scoreboard, the defense rallied and made a few big stops to give the offense good field position and the ball,” Novak added. Quarterback Bradley Stoltzfus threw four touchdown passes, finding Keaghan Sweigart twice, as well as

Derek Ulishney and Zach Fisher. Stoltzfus’s passing game garnered 351 yards with 17 of 23 completions. The Spartans managed to break into the end zone for a final time in the fourth, but the Bucks had already established enough of an advantage, and topped it off with a running touchdown from Kaden Martin to seal the comeback victory. FIELD HOCKEY Lady Bucks’ field hockey experienced their first league defeat last weekend, falling 1-0 to Manheim Township, but rebounded with a triumphant 3-0 trip to Hempfield, and then topped Ephrata 1-0 on Thursday, Oct. 3. Persistence paid off for the Lady Bucks in the 1-0 overtime win at home against the Ephrata Mountaineers, tallying 15 shots before Carli Eberly netted the golden goal five minutes into overtime. The 1-0 loss to the Blue Streaks had a similar story line, but this time it was Township that managed to slip in the game-winner two minutes into the extra period, marking CV’s first league loss this season. “We learned you have to capitalize on your opportunities to score,” head coach Kelly Dearolf pointed out after the loss. “We worked on taking quicker shots at practice and made the changes we needed to get the next section win.” That next win Dearolf referenced was a 3-0 shutout over Hempfield last Tuesday, in which the Buckskins and the Black Knights traded possessions in a scoreless first half before CV unleashed an unstoppable offensive attack. “We knew, going into Hempfield, that their defense and goalkeeping would be strong,” explained Dearolf. “We picked up the pace in the second half, connected with one another, and finished with some good-looking goals.” Those three successes came off three different CV sticks, notched by Abby Morley, Oliva Hess, and Sydney Weaver. At the opposite end of the field, the CV back line kept busy thwarting the Knights’ counterattack. At one point, a Hempfield striker broke free of the defense, creating a one-v-one scenario at the CV goal with Eberly snatching up a monumental save to preserve the CV shutout. TENNIS The CV tennis squad made it to the semifinal round of the LL team tournament last week, overcoming Lampeter-Strasburg, 3-0, in the opening round before falling, 3-1, to Section Three victors Lancaster Catholic. The Crusaders snatched up their three points on Monday with two singles wins and one in doubles action, propelling them to the final showdown against Section One champs Manheim Township. CV’s Rachel Eby battled into three sets at Number Two singles, but came up just short against Catholic’s Angellie San Jose, (6-1, 2-6, 6-3). The third singles showdown also

extended to three sets with Sophia Steed slipping behind Meg Grasberger (6-4, 2-6, 6-2). “We had an incredible match against LC,” praised head coach Dale Gregg. “All of the singles matches went three sets; each set was closely contested. We just happened to lose two of them.” Jessica Chen and Alexcis Johns put up a strong CV performance in Number Two doubles, claiming a point for the Bucks with a 6-4, 6-0 sweep. In order to advance to that semifinal matchup, the Bucks first had to go through L-S, and did it with a rapid 3-0 sweep. Eby picked up the necessary singles win at Number Two, working efficiently to a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Ellie Kready and Chen secured a point in Number One doubles (7-5, 63) and Kaila Burkholder and Johns collected a triumph at Number Two (6-1, 6-4). “The girls stayed patient, and doubles was our strength during that match,” added Gregg. “When asked, each individual has stepped up to perform-the true essence of a team effort.” Next up, the CV squad performed on a more individual level, kicking off their efforts in the early stages of the flighted tournament last weekend, with four singles and three doubles teams competing and results to be covered next week. BOYS’ SOCCER Last Tuesday, the scoreboard might have registered a 3-2 loss for the Buckskins after a clash with Warwick went in favor of the Warriors, but off-field the teams focused on a unifying causeraising funds and awareness in their annual Red Card Cancer event. The Bucks held their own against the current Section One leaders, working their way to a 2-0 lead on the Warriors midway through the second half, but three rapid-fire Warrior goals allowed Warwick to edge ahead before time expired. “We faced a tough opponent and took a lead by executing in certain moments, while defensively holding them at bay,” explained head coach Dave Hartlaub of the strong start. CV’s Andrew Wahba netted the only goal of the first half, and Richard Valverde-Gomez knocked in the second Buckskin success. “Warwick has quality and did not quit,” Hartlaub went on to say. “Our boys have continued to train hard and improve. As a coaching staff, we are disappointed for the boys because of how much they gave to the game.” As a reminder of valuable efforts outside of athletics, the team also focused on their third annual partnership with Red Card Cancer, a time of unity and support among the LL teams. “‘A cure is our goal’ is the message from Red Card Cancer which recently partnered with the American Cancer Society,” explained Hartlaub. “During the first week of October, soccer matches in the LL League will be showing their signs of solidarity.”

PENNYSAVER Hempfield (6-1) in the LL Section One standings. Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with the Warriors held quite a few similarities, as both teams netted their solitary goals in the second half, registered seven shots apiece, each keeper grabbed six saves, and neither team could break the goal line in the double overtime extension.

Organizers hope to draw a large crowd to the yard sale, as the proceeds have been earmarked for several global mission projects. Senior pastor Jerry Lingenfelter noted that the first $3,000 will be used to help Haitian pastor Charles Amicy purchase a vehicle that he can use to visit the five churches he supervises in rural Haiti. Amicy works with the Presbyterian Mission in Haiti, which supports a Cabaret-based orphanage that houses 20 to 25 children. The vehicle will also be used to transport

children and staff members and to obtain supplies for the orphanage. Lingenfelter called Amicy a “global partner,” of which Mission Church has quite a few. These are pastors and congregations that the church actively supports by sending resources and personnel as needed. Mission teams have visited Amicy and his churches, and teams also traveled to churches in Mexico, Romania, and Trinidad in the past two months. Plans for summer 2020 are underway, when a team of junior high students will serve at a partner church in Montreal and a team of senior high students will serve in Trinidad. Teams of adults are also planning to go to Haiti and to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. “The rest (of the yard sale proceeds) will go to our missions account to support urgent requests from our global partners and supplement fundraising for short-term and relief teams,” Lingenfelter said. While the yard sale will have a global impact, the organizers expect it to make a difference locally as well. “It’s a great way to meet our new neighbors,” Lingenfelter remarked. The church, which was previously located in Lancaster city for 18 years, bought the Lampeter campus of Lancaster County Christian School last year and held its first service there on April 1, 2018. “Yard-saling is very popular in our area,” Lingenfelter added. “(Mission Church’s yard sale is) a way anybody can support global missions,”
