Second Steps Trunk Or Treat Planned

WhenAdriana Witman, school-age program administrator with Steps to Success, a Christian preschool and day care service, saw how well the organization’s 2021 Trunk or Treat went, she was happy to plan another. “It was very successful and exciting,” reported Witman.

As a result, the second Steps to Success Trunk or Treat will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola. This year, the event will be open to the Conestoga Valley community and the Donegal community, where Steps recently opened a location in the Donegal Primary School. The event will feature a number of decorated trunks offering free candy.

Food items at the event will include free hot dogs provided by Zion Lutheran Church and s’mores. Members of local Boy Scout troops 82 and 83 will tend the fire pits for roasting marshmallows.

Families from both Conestoga Valley and Donegal have been invited to decorate trunks for the event. Trunk themes will include Scooby-Doo and Harry Potter. Organizers believe they can fit up to 40 cars in the ample lot behind the church. Attendees are encouraged to dress up in costume for the event.

Witman noted that Steps serves a total of 150 families and 200 children in all its programs.

More information on the program may be found by searching for “Steps to Success Christian Early Learning Centers” on Facebook. Those wishing to attend are asked to register by calling 717-656-3363 or emailing adrianawitman.steps@gmail.com.

“(Hands-On-History Days) are very popular,” said Sheri Brown, workshop coordinator with Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster. Brown noted that Hands-On-History Days began as a day for homeschoolers to visit the museum.

“(The event) has changed over the past 19 years to three days that we celebrate in October,” she added.

Past Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church bazaars have included a variety of vendors selling homemade and home-based business items. After a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19 concerns, the event is returning with about 20 vendors, plus George Cooper, author of the recently published book “Joseph of Nazareth: A Story of Uncommon Love and Faith,” will be there to autograph the story.

Hands-On-History Days, which were not held or were modified during the past two years due to COVID-19 restrictions, will return on Thursdays, Oct. 13, 20, and 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. A per-person admission fee will be charged, but Landis Valley Associates members

may attend for free, as can children age 5 and under. Groups of 10 or more are required to make reservations prior to attending.

FRESH CHICKEN ON SALE

“The whole purpose is to have (the activities) be hands on,” said Brown, who noted that the events will be fall themed. One of the most popular places to visit is an authentic schoolhouse, where a lesson based on a fall poem will be taught. “We use McGuffey Readers and historic books for our lesson plan,” said Brown, who noted that the schoolhouse was donated and moved to the site from Snake Hill Road in Leola. “(Students) work with a slate and chalk, and they learn elocution, (through what) we call tongue twisters today,” she said.

Students will also have opportunities to take part in farm chores from the 1700s and 1800s. “They will stuff a mattress with straw, so they get a true feel for a lumpy mattress,” said Brown, who added that bedding was generally changed a couple times a year. “They will learn how laundry was done with a scrubbing board and the old-fashioneddryer called a clothesline,” she added. Students will also learn to build a snake fence, so named because of its zig-zag shape. “The bonus is those fences can be moved quickly,” explained Brown.

Organizers have turned a traditional Pennsylvania German folk art into a make-andtake craft for the event. “We will make scherenschnitte pumpkins and leaves they can take home,” said Brown, who said that at home, students can enhance their simple fallthemed decorations with watercolors or crayons.

In addition, museum staff members will be provide demonstrations and interpretations in areas such as tavern cooking, blacksmithing, leatherworking, and weaving.

Readers who would like more information or to make reservations may email c-sherbrow@pa.gov or call 717-569-0401, ext. 228.

The 2022 holiday bazaar will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster.

According to Deb Burns, one of the organizers of the bazaar, among the many crafters will be those who sell jewelry, dog scarves, crocheted items, wood crafts, handmade note cards and greeting cards, wreaths, painted gourds, candles, handmade ornaments, and repurposed wine bottles. Homebased business vendors will sell Avon products, items from

Pampered Chef, children’s books, Discovery Toys, Tupperware, and brand-name bags. Each of the vendors will donate an item for the Chinese auction. Winners of the Chinese auction will be announced at 2 p.m.

Organizers plan to offer both breakfast and lunch foods for purchase. Individual breakfast casseroles made with potatoes, egg, ham or bacon, and cheese, along with coffee, will be sold for breakfast. Hot dogs and chicken corn soup will be offered for lunch. Chicken corn soup will be sold by the bowl to eat at the bazaar or by the quart to take out. A variety of baked goods will be available as well.

Cooper explained that his book, about Joseph, earthly

father of Jesus, was written in the first person because the Scripture records no words for Joseph. “It’s his voice speaking and the kind of person I think he was,” said Cooper, who was inspired to write about the carpenter 40 years ago by a teenage girl who referred to Joseph as a “wimp.” “That got me started,” recalled Cooper. “I didn’t believe that, but I didn’t have any (proof) to say differently.” What began as an attempt to write a short story grew into 228 pages published in 2021. “The more I researched and read the Scripture and considered what kind of person (Joseph) was, the more alive he became,” said Cooper. “I imagine he was quiet but very

strong.” Cooper also noted that he admired Joseph’s treatment of Mary when he discovered that she was pregnant. “He cared for her,” said Cooper, who added, “(Joseph’s) faith shines through it all. He knows who Jesus is, but he knows no one would believe it.”

Burns reported that the mission committee members hope the sale will raise $2,000 for local organizations such as Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services as well as international ones such as JAARS Inc., a ministry associated with Wycliffe Bible Translators. Readers who have questions about the event may call 717-951-9717 for additional information.

Evening Of Worship Music Planned

Community United Methodist Church, 130 Tennyson Drive, Lancaster, will host a program of worship music on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary.

The group consists of Jim Conners, guitar and vocals; Laquell Cooper, percussion; Travis Messner, vocals; and Joseph Liptock, keyboard and vocals. The name 3:16 was chosen for the band members’ love of the Scripture verse John 3:16.

The group’s presentation will include personal testimonies from the band members, along with a variety of worship songs, such as “Beautiful One,” “How Great Is Our God,” “I Can Only Imagine,” “I Saw the Light” and “Put a Little Love in Your Heart.” Audiences will be encouraged to sing along.

There is no admission charge. A freewill offering will be received.

Local Author Publishes Second Children’s Book

Fairmount will host a book signing and presentation on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 6:30 p.m. in the Wheat Ridge Gathering Room on the first floor of the Wheat Ridge Apartments at 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata. The event will feature Lois M. Lehman, who is a resident of

Fairmount and the author of the recently released children’s book “New Adventures With Grandma.”

The new book is her second. Her first book, “Walking With Grandma,” was published a year ago and has had a second printing.

“New Adventures” is longer than the first one, with 10 stories and 54 pages. During the pandemic, Lehman began writing letters to her faraway young grandchildren about her daily walks among the nearby gardens, trees, and ponds, and these letters grew into stories. In “New Adventures,” Grandma Lois invites children ages 3 to 9 along on her walks to discover friends among the animals, birds, plants, and people she meets.

In addition to the book launch, Lehman will read to children from her new book at

a story time on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 10 a.m. in the Wheat Ridge Gathering Room.

For information on purchasing a copy of the book, contact Lehman at 717-355-9280 or artsunaean@gmail.com. Directions to Fairmount are available at www.FairmountHomes.org.

A greeter with a blinking red light will give each child a ticket signifying his or her age group. At the end of the event, costumes will be judged in various age categories.

The parade will travel up 12th Street, turning right on Main Street until reaching

Akron Fire Company, 1229 Main St., Akron, where children may enjoy hot dogs, cookies, and other treats. Costume judging will take place during this time. Three winners in each age category will be announced, and door prizes will be presented. There will be candy for all.

The event will end by 8:30 p.m., and a hay wagon will be available for anyone who wishes to ride back to the MCC parking lot rather than walking.

For more information, contact Aaron Murray at 717381-7173. In the case of rain, the parade will be canceled.

Maternal Fetal Medicine Practice Opens In Neffsville

Lancaster Maternal Fetal Medicine (LMFM) recently began seeing patients at its new office at 2568 Lititz Pike, which is located in the old Members 1st Federal Credit Union building in Neffsville.

During five years of growth, the practice has expanded to several locations in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. The practice brings specialized care to pregnant mothers experiencing a number of conditions that characterize their pregnancy as highrisk, such as diabetes, pregnancy with multiples, recurrent pregnancy loss or high blood pressure. As the new location opens, LMFM will close the old, leased space at 108 Foxshire

Prime

Drive, Lancaster.

Since 2017, Lancaster LMFM has been providing care to local families as well as clients from across the country seeking advanced care. The new location will be housed in a newly renovated and expanded former bank, which the practice bought in 2021. LMFM’s services include state-of-the-art 2D/3D and 4D ultrasound scans, surgical pregnancy loss prevention, pregnancy monitoring, pre-pregnancy counseling, and genetic counseling and diabetes management.

The private medical office has two nationally and internationally renowned perinatologists, Drs.

Scratch & Dent

Robert Larkin and Christian Macedonia. A central part of their goal is to be a model practice to reduce the high maternal morbidity and mortality rate in America, especially among people of color. One of the ways they strive to accomplish this goal is to keep every avenue for access to care open; they welcome self-referrals. LMFM also has a special billing program for uninsured and underinsured patients.

LMFM has highly-trained and certified sonographers who provide both routine and specialized ultrasounds. The practive is certified and accredited in all five of the American Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine

(AIUM) areas of OB imaging.

LMFM is a pioneer in 3D ultrasound, telemedicine and genomic medicine. Macedonia performed a 3D ultrasound on a living fetus in December of 1991 at the National Institutes of Health as a government researcher.

Providers include two LMFM physicians, a nurse practitioner, a physician assistant and a high-risk nurse who has a Master of Science in Nursing. The motto of the disabled veteran-owned small business is “Where all are welcome and the future is born.”

Bucks Avenge First Half Loss, Tie MT 3-3

There are times in the sporting world where a tie is just as good as a win. However, when jockeying for playoff position a win is preferable but the CV boys’ soccer team will gladly take the 3-3 draw opposite Manheim Township over the earlier season setback to the Blue Streaks.

The Buckskins needed every last one of Jacob Carr’s 12 saves to leave Neffsville with that tie on October 3rd. Andrew Jones, with help from Rowan Aisenbrey, put CV on the board just after intermission, then knotted the game a second time, this one off a feed from Garrett Anderson in the 53rd minute. Aisenbrey

gave CV a 3-2 lead in the 60th minute but Township was able to answer to earn the tie.

The Bucks entered the game with Township coming off a 2-1 win over Penn Manor on September 29th. CV did all their work early with Aisenbrey converting a Jason Burkholder feed in the 5th minute before setting up Jones in the 6th minute to put CV back in front 2-1.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

The girls’ soccer team continues to struggle but head man Tom Erickson sees the positive.

“In looking at the season overall I think it’s important to remember this team won one game last year and scored seven goals,” said Erickson. “We should double the number of goals scored from last year to this year, so we are improving. We still have a way to go though.”

Those on field struggles resulted in losses to Penn Manor and Manheim Township by a combined 15-0 with Erickson sighting larger rosters for

opponents and second half fatigue from his squad. The stats back up Erickson, Penn Manor used a 6-0 second half surge to collect their 7-0 win on the 29th while Township posted the same 6-0 second half edge in their 8-0 October 3rd victory. Gabby Moore totaled 18 saves in the two games.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

With the postseason lurking just around the corner, the girls’ volleyball team upped their winning streak to five matches with victories over Warwick and McCaskey pushing the Lady Buckskins overall record to 9-1.

CV toppled Warwick by a 30 count on September 29th, posting wins of 25-17 and 2522 sandwiched around a marathon 30-28 win in the second game. Summer Getz posted 24 assists and three aces while Madison Williams collected 11 kills and two blocks. Add in matching 13dig games from Emily Kornacki and Rebecca Hartranft and you get a CV sweep.

Conestoga Valley continued to roll on October 4th, sweeping McCaskey with scores of 25-6, 25-15 and 25-19. Getz tallied another 22 assists with Williams adding 11 more kills to her tally. Kornacki chipped in with eight digs and two aces.

TENNIS

The girl’s tennis team saw their team postseason end almost as quickly as it began. The Lady Buckskins opened their postseason with a trip to Manheim on the 29th to face the Lady Barons in the opening round of the L-L Team Tournament. The result was a 3-2 win for the home team, ending CV’s team quest. Jade Flores and Paula Valverde-Gomez picked up singles wins for the two team points.

CROSS COUNTRY

The cross-country teams finished their regular season on October 4th by taking on Cedar Crest and Warwick in Lebanon. Both sides ended up 0-2 on the day with Seana Dougherty posting the top CV finish, taking fifth in the girl’s race. Timothy Gitonga took the top honor on the boys’ side, finishing seventh while Josh Yoder and Carson Miller finished 14th and 15th respectively.

FIELD HOCKEY

The end of the regular season is in sight for the field hockey team, and they are making a strong post-season push. CV notched wins over Hempfield, Ephrata and Central York, pushing their overall record to 9-6, placing them in the middle of the projected 16-team District 3-2A playoff field with just a few games remaining.

Mikyla Rineer led the Lady Buckskins to the win over

Hempfield on Sept 28th, scoring in the opening and closing frames for a tidy 2-0 win. Elizabeth Talley needed just two saves to earn the shutout.

CV closed out September with a stumble in the form of a 4-0 loss to Manheim Township on the 30th. Talley finished with six saves.

The Lady Bucks rebounded nicely on October 3rd, rolling by Ephrata 3-0. Rineer netted two more goals with Alaina Culbert tacking on the final score in the fourth. Talley stopped four shots to post the shutout.

Conestoga Valley needed an extra period to get by Central York one day later, but nine Talley saves were enough thanks to Rineer’s overtime game winner. Jamie Handwerger put CV on the board in the first period with help from Lily Good.

FOOTBALL

High School homecoming is always a special time and the football team made sure to keep it that way, closing out September with a 38-18 victory over Lebanon. Despite the comfortable margin on the scoreboard the Buckskins managed just a 263-214 yardage edge but 252 of that came on the ground, keeping the ball away from the Cedars.

Ish Camacho topped the rushing attack with 15 carries and 69 yards with one TD, adding another score through the air. Nick Tran was just off that rushing pace with 14 carries for 61 yards and two touchdowns. Jayden Johnson added 69 yards and a score on three carries while Macoy Kneisley tacked on another 34 yards and a score on his nine carries.

Memorial Closes For Renovations

The Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial, located at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, is temporarily closed to the public for structural repairs. The memorial, which was dedicated in 2001, is known as the largest veterans’ memorial located in any of the national cemeteries. It honors those who died in military service since World War II. Renovations are expected to take until June 2023.

The memorial is made of concrete, granite, and stone. Its structure is generally in good condition but requires repairs and alterations to address areas of damage due

to long-term exposure to the elements.

Funded by the state as a public improvement project, the renovations will cost $3.6 million. Specific repairs will include re-anchoring plaques, resetting existing pre-cast concrete, waterproofing walls, replacing flashing and upgrading drainage.

Community members may pay tribute to veterans while also helping to preserve the memorial by donating to the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial Trust Fund. Taxdeductible donations to the fund can be made at www.donate.dmva.pa.gov; information on donating by

mail is also available on this site. Donations can be made in honor of, in memory of or on behalf of another person.

One hundred percent of donations go toward the ongoing upkeep of the memorial, such as landscaping, lighting, and fountains as well as needed maintenance for structural and cosmetic components throughout the memorial.

Tour To Highlight Architecture

The Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County will offer a C. Emlen Urban Architectural Tour in the city of Lancaster.

Urban was an architect who designed over 100 buildings in Lancaster County and Hershey from 1886 until his retirement in 1930. His work includes many public and private buildings,

some of which are on the National Register of Historic Places.

The 45-minute tour will include many Urban-designed sites in downtown Lancaster. Starting at 9 a.m., tours will depart every hour from the Sehner-Ellicott-von Hess house, home of the Trust, located at 123 N. Prince St. The last tour

will depart at 4 p.m.

The Trust recommends purchasing tickets in advance at https://hptrust.org/urban tour2022/, and any remaining tickets will be available for purchase on the day of the event. Each tour will accommodate 20 people.

Additionally, the Trust is partnering with local architect and C. Emlen Urban expert Gregory J. Scott, who will guide three separate two-hour walking tours in

downtown Lancaster. These activities will be a Chestnut Hill tour from 9 to 11 a.m., a center city tour from noon to 2 p.m., and a church and mansion tour from 3 to 5 p.m. Each outing can accommodate 24 participants.

Every tour participant will receive a keepsake tour book that features photographs of the architecture of Urban.

For registration and more information, visit the aforementioned website.
