Trunk Or Treat To Return Church Plans Outdoor Event BY ANN MEAD ASH

fter holding a drive-through trick-or-treat alternative in 2020, Faith Church will return to its traditional Trunk or Treat with an all-outdoor event planned for 2021. “We are back to the trunks,” said Michelle Shertzer, who anticipates up to 10 vehicles with decorated trunks will be stationed around the church parking lot this year. Area children and parents who attend are encouraged to dress in costume for the Trunk or Treat on Friday, Oct. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church, 2124 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster. Children will receive a bag for their treats at the entrance to the event. Masks will be optional this year. The Trunk or Treat will be held rain or shine, with the event moving inside if the weather necessitates that. This year’s seventh annual free event will be based on the theme “I Spy.” “We will have people (decorate) their own trunks, but we will have characters from the Bible that kids will have to find in each trunk,”

Lancaster Catholic Announces Homecoming Court

BY ANN MEAD ASH

According to Dan Steinman, Handi-Vangelism BASIS ministry assistant, the Help for People in Pain seminar given by Tim and Kathy Sheetz addresses any loss that significantly affects a person’s life and outlook. “It’s for people with different types of losses,” Steinman said. “Not necessarily the loss of a spouse or a child. It could be the loss of a job … a divorce or bankruptcy … a (difficult) diagnosis.” See Grief pg 9

explained Shertzer, who noted that some trunks will involve games as well as treats. Children and their parents will also find plenty of food and a craft station. Free food will include hot dogs, popcorn, baked goods, and beverages. As in the past, the church will accept donations of canned goods for the Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS) Food Pantry. Unexpired nonperishables, such as canned fruits, vegetables, and soups, along with pastas, are welcome. Donations may be made at the first stop under the portico. Shertzer shared that those who attended the 2020 drive-through event expressed appreciation. “Last year, we had a large group,” Shertzer recalled. “Parents (said), ‘Oh, thank you. This is the neatest thing.’ They loved it.” People of all ages are welcome at the event, but organizers ask that attendees refrain from bringing pets. Readers who have questions about the event may call the church at 717-393-5345.

Bishop Gainer Visits OMPH School

Grief from pg 1

Our Mother of Perpetual Help (OMPH) School welcomed a special visitor in September, the Most Rev. Ronald Gainer, bishop of the Diocese of Harrisburg. Gainer celebrated Mass with the OMPH students and then processed to the Bernardine Center to bestow a special blessing on the Atrium for OMPH Parish’s Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Program. Before returning to Harrisburg, Gainer visited the classrooms

and answered questions from the children. OMPH School welcomes children from the local Catholic churches, as well as interested members of the general community. The school is accredited through the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Elementary Schools. For more information, call 717-738-2414 or visit www.omphschool.com.

Chris Lenhart (left) and Dan Steinman display the Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC) logo. CMBC and HandiVangelism are partnering with Beth Foss (not pictured) to hold a grief seminar in November.

Help for People in Pain will be presented at Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC), 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, on Saturday, Nov. 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The program will be simulcast and livestreamed at Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, for those who would rather attend at that location. Tim and Kathy have presented the seminar more than 200 times both in and outside the U.S., and the book they utilize will be updated for this event. “(Tim and Kathy) will offer tools to navigate through grief,” said Steinman. “They will talk about the different stages of grief and different ways to personally deal with the situations, including specific sections on illnesses or the death of a spouse.” Chris Lenhart, pastor of CMBC, noted that the seminar is not just for those who are grieving. “(An attendee) may be a neighbor or a co-worker or a good friend or a family

member (who is) trying to figure out a way to reach out and care for (a grieving person).” Steinman shared that those who take the seminar often say they wish their pastor had attended one. Lenhart concurred, saying, “Pastors, ministry leaders who deal with loss, chaplains for retirement communities and hospitals … anyone who is around people experiencing grief and loss would benefit from attending this seminar. I think they will get valuable tools.” He added that he is looking forward to what he will learn. There is a cost to attend the seminar, which will include a book and lunch at both locations for those who register at https://calvarymonument.org /journey-through-grief by Monday, Nov. 1. In-person registration on the day of the seminar may be completed at either church, but a book and lunch will not be guaranteed. Coffee and light refreshments will be served.
