Church Plans Second Trunk Or Treat By Ann Mead Ash

Before New Life Assembly of God organized its first Trunk or Treat in 2018, church members thought about what kind of event would reach out to local residents. “We wanted (an event) just for the (local) community … to give back to the community and to be a part of what’s going on around here,” said Julie Capaldi, who serves as children’s pastor. “We wanted to get to know (people) and give them a chance to know us.” Capaldi reported that response to the event was positive. “We had beautiful weather. It was wonderful,” she recalled, noting that about 200 area residents came out to relax and chat. Capaldi is hoping for another nice evening when the church holds its second Trunk or Treat at 1991 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, on

Thursday, Oct. 31, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. “Last year, we had 21 trunks, and this year, we hope to have more than 25,” said Capaldi, who explained that each vehicle trunk will have its own positive theme. “It could be biblical, a superhero (theme), or sports,” she said. “Last year, we had an Eagles trunk and a Penn State trunk, and we had Captain America. He will definitely be there (again).” In addition to showing off their decorations, trunk owners will give out candy when attendees visit. Additional free food will include pretzels and water. According to Capaldi, each visitor who fills out a registration card will be entered to win a “trunk” prize, which will be a gift basket of goodies. Capaldi said that the church has also arranged for a member of the East Lampeter Police Department to be available to talk to visitors. The Lafayette Fire See Trunk Or Treat pg 2

Bridge Dedicated To Fallen Soldier By Ann Mead Ash

Some time ago, Rep. Keith Greiner, a Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) graduate, was at a meeting attended by Phil Hursh and Harry Wink. The three discussed a memorial for Sgt. Melvin Wink, who grew up and resided in West Earl Township, and was the only CVHS graduate killed while serving in Vietnam. The conversation led to Greiner talking to the Pennsylvania state transportation committee in Harrisburg about the possibility of refurbishing an aging bridge that spanned the Conestoga River between Brownstown and Farmersville in West Earl Township and dedicating the newly refurbished structure to Wink’s service. Greiner introduced See Bridge pg 2

Rep. Keith Greiner spoke at the new Sergeant Melvin R. Wink Memorial Bridge a few days before it opened. The bridge was dedicated to Wink in honor of his service in Vietnam.

House Bill 2425, and on Aug. 16, the bridge was dedicated in Wink’s name. Greiner was pleased with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation work on the bridge. “This is the first I have seen the bridge, and I think it fits in so well,” said Greiner prior to the dedication. “We are blessed here in West Earl Township.” “I grew up just down the road in Upper Leacock (Township),” began Greiner as he opened the dedication service. Greiner acknowledged the presence of West Earl Township supervisors vice chair Harold Keppley Jr. and member Keith Kauffman. He also recognized Dave Kramer, who has been involved in an effort to create a community Vietnam Memorial for veterans. “He has worked hard throughout the county to acknowledge veterans,” said Greiner, who also recognized Bob Zook from the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association in Leola. “Sgt. Melvin R. Wink was a true American hero,” said Greiner. “His sacrifice for the cause of freedom and democracy must never be forgotten by this nation, and he will be honored for all time in Lancaster County with this bridge dedication.” Prior to the dedication, Greiner spent time with Wink’s family. “I met with the family and heard stories,” said Greiner. “It was somewhat emotional (because) it was nice to reminisce, but I could feel the pain of the family.” Greiner went on to say that the pur-

pose of the bridge was to “create a special memorial for an American soldier who left us too soon.” “It has taken a lot of years, but (Wink) is finally getting the recognition he deserves,” said Greiner. “Today will serve as a remembrance for the community and pay tribute to (Wink’s) service to our country.” Greiner concluded the dedication by asking Wink’s family members to remove the covering over the sign that reads “Sergeant Melvin R. Wink Memorial Bridge.”

Melvin R. Wink of West Earl Township gave his life for his country serving in Vietnam. The bridge crossing the Conestoga River between Farmersville and Brownstown has been remodeled and dedicated in his name.

“The Bread to Man” is an educational school that was created in October 2010 to meet the social needs of the Pas bwa dom community. We have steadily been growing in number for the last nine years and continue to see progress academically. This year it started with 210 students and 30 employees. Some of the biggest problems of the school are parents not having the sufficient funds, keeping our professors paid, and having a functional school building. We are looking for sponsors to help with the school. Pray with us that God would provide for the school.

Outside the church, a bounce rush obstacle course and bounce castle will be set up. “The bounce rush obstacle course was very popular last year, especially with the older children,” recalled Martin. “The younger ones really enjoyed the bounce castle.” Other activities will include a hayride and a corn dig. Three campfires will be burning, and music will be played. Free food available outside will include hot dogs, french fries, soft pretzels, chocolate chip cookies, popcorn, ice cream, candy, snack items, and hot and cold beverages. food donations,” said Martin. “(This is) another way we as a community can work together to help serve each other.” A small committee works to put the event together, but about 150 volunteers help coordinate the trick-or-treat alternative on the night it occurs. “This event counts on church members to come together to serve the community,” said Martin, who added that many church members also donate food items such as cookies and candy. Martin said that approximately 1,200 people attended the 2018 Fall Celebration, and organizers expect about the same number this year. “We have always had a great response from the community for this event,” commented Martin. “It provides a safe and fun alternative to trick-or-treating.” In the case of inclement weather, readers are encouraged to visit www.weaverland.org for information.

If the name Dorothy Nyong’o sounds vaguely familiar, it is because her daughter Lupita Nyong’o is an Academy Award winner and the first Kenyan actress to win an Oscar. The other members of the Nyong’o family are accomplished individuals as well, and Dorothy will present “Parenting - The Power of Choice” as the guest of honor at the “Night of Galaxy” event hosted by the Fearfully and Wonderfully Made Sisterhood (FaWMs) on Friday, Nov. 1. The event will be a celebration of kinship and diversity by Kenyan women, and everyone is invited to attend, regardless of their race, color, or nationality. It will take place from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m. at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz. The three-course meal will conclude with peacock-themed cupcakes, representing the FaWMs logo, which features a peacock and the slogan “Doing Life Together.” “FaWMs was inspired by the notion that women love to connect in groups beyond church, work, and life’s inevitable challenges, especially after 40 years,” said founder Helen Wakinyue-Nthambiri. “We meet monthly for meals, investment, and simply to laugh (and) share experiences and ideas. There are no boundaries to our often-random topics. (It’s) very therapeutic. It often brings out the little girl in each one of us, including the not-so-extroverted.” Wakinyue-Nthambiri formed the group for women over age 40 in 2017. A majority of members are from overseas. The name of the group is taken from Psalm 139:14, which describes humans as fearfully and wonderfully made by God. The group is deliberately small in order to promote intimacy and trust, WakinyueNthambiri said, and a waiting list for new members has been created. A group for women age 30 and older will be launched at the Nov. 1 event. “Exciting times (are ahead),” Wakinyue-Nthambiri commented. “Bigger things like travel, cruises, and hobbysharing are in the works.” The theme for the Nov. 1 event was chosen to reflect magnificence and the glow of a galaxy of stars. Attendees are encouraged to wear elegant white in order to look and feel angelic. “You will be empowered, inspired, (and) loaded with fun,” WakinyueNthambiri said of the event. Topics discussed during the evening will include health, academics, overcoming diaspora challenges and thriving in a foreign land, See Sisterhood pg 9

Gitonga, Ngarama Earn L-L League X-C Medals by Leah Sintic

Emmanuel Gitonga and Jotham Ngarama brought home individual medals from the LL League Meet held at Ephrata, leading the CV cross country teams with their performances breaking into the top 25. Gitonga’s time of 17:15.4 was the best of the day for the Buckskins, and earned him 18th in the individual rankings out of 167 harriers. Ngarama was close behind, clocking a 17:19.4 to come in 24th. The two pace-setters boosted the team results, and collectively the boys placed seventh out of a pool of 22 teams. Dante Belasco (18:30.7) and Ethan Logue (18:30.9) crossed back-to-back to claim 73rd and 74th for the CV crew, and Adam Harris took 82nd with the fifth best CV time of 18:40.9. “Both teams ran very well this afternoon,” praised head coach Mark Amway referencing the boys’ overall performance as well as the girls’ collective placement of ninth out of 17. For the girls, it was sophomore frontrunner Kylynn

Frankford who clocked the best time, a 21:09.5 that put her in 26th place and just one spot shy of the LL individual medals. The next CV girls to finish came in a cluster with Kate Kmieczak (21:38.6), Brittney Johns (21:44.5), and Kayla Mongiovi (21:55.1) claiming 41st, 46th, and 49th respectively. Emily Castronova completed her race in 22:44.5 to pick up 69th place and rounded out the top five for the Lady Bucks. Next up, the CV squads will prep to compete at the District III race held on October 26. FIELD HOCKEY Thursday night marked the end of the LL tournament for the Lady Bucks, slipping behind Lampeter-Strasburg 10 in the semifinal round held at Hempfield. The Pioneers struck early, notching the only goal of the contest after just two minutes of play, and from there neither team was able to make another change to the scoreboard. Conestoga’s Brooke Eberly grabbed 11 saves in the loss. Two days earlier, CV opened their playoff run with a decisive 3-0 victory over ELCO in their quarterfinal match at Donegal. In the first half, neither team notched a goal, but CV’s constant pressure would eventually wear down the ELCO defensive line, and three second half goals were their

reward. “We had a lot of shots in the first half, but couldn’t seem to connect. We changed that in the second half,” pointed out head coach Kelly Dearolf. “We had to reinforce the game plan and focus on spreading out on the field, stick to stick passing, and making our shots count.” Outshooting ELCO 18-2, and earning an impressive 13 corner opportunities, the Lady Bucks were relentless, and six minutes into the second half they registered their first success, a goal off the stick of Carli Eberly. Abby Morley churned additional CV momentum, connecting with the backboard for two more Conestoga Photo by Cheri Sine goals to assure the Buckskin victory. The minutes waned in what looked to be a defensive deadlock, with neither team having secured a goal, and very few clear shots on goal after 74 minutes of play. Keepers from both teams, Jocelyn Umana of Ephrata and CV’s Alyson Riggle, matched each other with three saves apiece, but a late-game opportunity gave the Mountaineers one additional shot, and Ephrata’s lead scorer, Annie Slovak, converted the lone goal of the of the contest with five minutes left in regulation. PENNYSAVER the CV squad embarked on their PIAA District III playoff journey and earned their way into the semifinal round, a feat that a CV girl’s tennis team has not accomplished since 2001. Their trek toward the Districts finals was rerouted after being paired against an undefeated Manheim Township team last Tuesday, when the Buckskins fell 3-0. “Manheim Township raised the level of their play and were just too dominant,” acknowledged head coach Dale Gregg after the loss. Township went on to take down Conrad Weiser in the title match and claimed the District championship, 3-2. CV progressed into a battle for third against Hershey, where they succumbed to a 3-1 loss, with Sophia Steed earning CV’s lone point for her 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Hershey’s Sara Pagnis. On their way to the semis, the Lady Bucks first needed to overcome Central York, and did so with a 3-1 triumph last Monday. CV picked up two of their three points in singles with performances from Rachel Eby at No. 2 (6-2, 6-2), and Steed at No. 3 (6-0, 6-2). “Rachel Eby performed with precision strokes,” praised Gregg. “Sophia

Steed attacked and was able to put Feistritzer on the defense early and often.” The third point needed to win the match came from Jessica Chen and Alexcis Johns pairing at No. 2 doubles with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph. VOLLEYBALL CV volleyball put together a string of league wins to climb the ranks of the LL Section One earning themselves an LL playoff berth for the first time in eight years. The squad’s tenacious efforts compiled a league record of 7-5 for a three-way tie for second place in Section One, sharing identical records with Cedar Crest and Manheim Township. With undefeated Hempfield (12-0) claiming the Section, only two more spots were open to qualify for the LL playoffs, meaning the three-way tie for second needed to be broken down by District III Power Ranking tiebreaker criteria, and CV made the cut. “My quote all year to them has been, ‘No one remembers how you started, it’s how you finished,’” explained head coach Dewey Barlow, reflecting on the strong finish his team is demonstrating. “I’m so proud of them all.” Three of the final four league

clashes of their regular season were triumphs for the Buckskins, with the concluding week of regular season holding split results, a 3-0 loss to Manheim Township, and 3-0 sweep over Warwick. Wednesday’s trip to Township marked the final contest of the regular season, a 3-0 disappointment for the CV club, falling to the Blue Streaks 25-21, 25-16, 25-21. On Monday, the Bucks wasted no time putting together three quick wins for the sweep over Warwick (2514, 25-19, 25-13). “In past matches we’ve played well in spurts, but have let teams take momentum back. We were able to play well start-to-finish this match against Warwick,” Barlow praised. Pumped with additional incentive from their senior night celebration, contributions from the six graduating seniors in the Warwick win made for a memorable evening for their home crowd. Charlize Miller (18 assists, 4 aces), Savannah Byers (11 kills), Maddie Glick (11 digs), Lexi McEvoy (4 blocks), Delaney Carbo, and CeCe Leininger were each honored for their hard work over the past four years, culminating in a senior season which is far from over.

“This has been a special group,” Barlow reflected back on their efforts starting their freshman year. “It’s been awesome to watch them grow as not only teammates and players, but also as outstanding student athletes. They have set a standard for the next group of players moving up.” FOOTBALL October 11th marked a 56-27 loss to Manheim Central for Buckskin football, despite a late game surge that included two trips to the end zone for CV in the final quarter. Quarterback Bradley Stoltzfus threw three touchdown passes finding Booper Johnson, Zach Fisher, and Keaghan Sweigart in the end zone, and collecting a total of 164 passing yards. Johnson ran in one more Buckskin conversion, and kicker, Nathan Heck, went three-for-four in PATs, but their efforts were outdone by a relentless Barons offense that hit pay dirt eight times. The last two opportunities for the Bucks to add to wins to their in the regular season will both be on their home field including a nonleague pairing with Warwick and a final league showdown against Elizabethtown.

“Trolleys From Lancaster to Terre Hill,” an informational lecture, will be held at Martindale Fellowship Center, 352 Martindale Road, Ephrata, on Thursday, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m. Herb Fischer will discuss how the trolley system took the place of the stage coach. He will also explain how the trolley service first began in Lancaster when the stage coach ran between Lancaster and Terre Hill. On Jan. 16, 1900, the Conestoga Traction Company was organized. Later called the Conestoga Transportation Company and a predecessor to the Red Rose Transit Authority, it operated trolleys throughout the county. At the height of its service in 1913, 40 trolleys ran through the city alone, serving 12 million passengers annually. By 1917, there were 38 different trolley companies serving southeastern Pennsylvania.

A trip from Terre Hill to Lancaster took only one hour and 15 minutes, which was a quick trip in those days. The trolley line came across Weaverland Valley, crossed the Conestoga Creek, and entered Terre Hill between the present day park and the cemetery. It met West Main Street along what is now Conestoga Street. A terminal shed protected passengers and freight from the weather while they waited for the next scheduled trolley. By advertising free trolley fares, merchants from Lancaster would entice Terre Hill residents to travel to Lancaster for their shopping needs. On April 24, 1932, trolley service from Terre Hill and Blue Ball was terminated due to the popularity of automobiles. The trolley was no longer competitive. Everyone is welcome to attend the lecture. Admission is free, though donations will be accepted.
