Thrill Of A Lifetime
Leola Artist Repairs Tiffany Window
BY ANN MEAD ASHJasonLichty of Leola is an artist with a broad resume. He paints, draws, sculpts, and more, but his love is stained glass, and while he wished to make a career in that area, he did not think it was likely to happen. “I thought for sure the stained glass end of things was just going to be a hobby,” said Lichty. “I was convinced it was just going to be an extension of my other artwork.”
Not only has Lichty developed a stained glass repair business that has him working “around the clock” and booked up to six months in advance, but in September, collector Bill Hylen, owner of Coming Up Roses Antiques in Adamstown, brought Lichty a Tiffany window to repair. “It’s just a thrill of a lifetime,” said Lichty, who kept the job a secret until the repair was complete. “There’s a
really good chance that for the rest of my career, I’ll never come across another Tiffany window.” Lichty added that his friends who work in stained-glass both locally and around the country are in awe of his opportunity. “They’re just blown away,” said Lichty.
“There’s a really good chance that for the rest of my career, I’ll never come across another Tiffany window.”
The window came from the All Angels’ Church in New York City and was designed by John B. Snook. The church was founded in 1890, and the Tiffany windows were a commission. The windows were still part of the church when it was sold to be demolished in 1979. The windows were auctioned
to Gene Holloway, who had them installed in a Tampa, Fla., restaurant. In 2021, Hylen recognized the Cherub Roundels featured in the windows and purchased them.
Lichty explained that in stained glass, certification of authenticity is called provenance, which he noted could range from a bill of sale to a photograph of a relative with the piece of art 100 years ago. “Fortunately, the All Angels’ Church has extensive records on this Tiffany commission, so these are wellknown windows,” said Lichty.
In his office, Lichty keeps a few examples of windows prior to repair. “You can see (this window is) filthy, and it’s buckled,” he said, explaining that the warping is caused by expansion and contraction from enduring changes in weather. He noted that the putty that seals the window falls out over time, and the window starts to come apart under its own weight.
Saying Farewell To Mr.
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD BY CATHY MOLITORISWhen Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center opened its doors on Oct. 3, it fulfilled a goal of the organization. “Adding Lancaster Medical Center is another step toward delivering on our promise to ensure the communities we serve are within 10 minutes of our primary care providers, 20 minutes of our specialty care and 30 minutes of our acute care,” said Joseph Frank, hospital president, East
Mr. Suit Records, 118 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, announced via Instagram on Oct. 3 that it will permanently close its doors at the end of the year. The news was met by a chorus of cries from the community, with responses by everyone from now-internationally famous rockers to those who became acquainted with the store while studying in Lancaster.
The record store has operated in Lancaster for 15 years and was started by Mike Madrigale, who has run it ever since. Madrigale grew up
Penn
Region for Penn State Health. The medical center is located near the intersection of State Road and Harrisburg Pike in East Hempfield Township.
The new hospital is an acute care facility, and it will offer both inpatient and outpatient care from its sixstory, 341,000-square-foot location that features 132 private patient beds. “Lancaster Medical Center will have inpatient services, including a cardiac catheterization lab, cardiac surgery, general surgery, labor and delivery, and complete medical and surgical capabilities,” Frank noted. “It will offer outpatient services such as an Emergency Department, imaging services and physician offices.”
Unique features at the facil-
ity include a “hybrid operating room,” Frank said, explaining that this state-ofthe-art design is an advanced procedural space that includes a traditional operating room (OR) and medical imaging devices. “Having advanced imaging and surgical technologies available in the same space makes it easier on the patient,” he remarked. “Our teams will be able to give them a single visit to the hybrid OR as opposed to multiple procedures. It allows us to do more advanced interventions in the operating room.”
While Frank emphasized that the most important feature of Lancaster Medical Center is its team of caregivers, he detailed design fea-
tures that reflect the organization’s commitment to a healthy work environment.
Departments and units are designed to promote staff collaboration and efficient workflow that reduces steps and provides quick access to supplies when minutes matter, he said. “A state-of-theart café with indoor and outdoor seating provides healthy dining in a soothing atmosphere,” Frank shared.
“Meditation areas, abundant windows with panoramic views, art and décor designs and the walking trail further promote well-being for staff and visitors.”
Construction on the hospital began in 2020. “Being able to design a hospital from scratch gives you many opportunities to incorporate design and technology into an exceptional patient experience,” Frank said. “We’ve planned so we are able to provide state-of-the-art technology for the community needs now and in the future as our community grows. We’ve engaged our physician partners in the technology choices
just as our nurses are engaged in designing our care. And we’ve added expanded consumer technologies like inroom digital patient education to not only provide the highest level of quality care, but also easy accessibility, comfort and convenience.”
Projected population growth was an important factor in choosing the site of the new medical center, he said.
“We know that Lancaster County is growing, and along with population growth will come the need for more health care services,” he commented. “This location provides a comfortable and convenient access to Penn State Health care, especially for an aging population. It allows us to anticipate the city’s outgrowth and plan for our community of 10 years from now. And not just in age, but in many other measures of diversity. Understanding the changing face of our community has been a key driver for our decisions from staffing, to care design to locations.”

near Allentown, where he attended Kutztown University and combed through local hole-in-the-wall shops to find additions for his record collection. He moved to Lancaster, where his brother and sister-in-law lived, in 2000.
“I was always working in record stores. When I moved to Lancaster, I ended up being in food service for a while, which was fun, but I always wanted to open my own place,” said Madrigale. He found out through his brother, who owned an art gallery downtown, that a building had opened up. With his own collection, Madrigale seized the opportunity to open a store, and Mr. Suit was born.
“There was definitely a learning curve with finding what I wanted to carry and getting enough of it at one time, but within a few years I hit my stride,” said Madrigale. Mr. Suit wasn’t the only game in town; Stan’s Records on Prince Street offered a collection of classic records, and Angry, Young & Poor on Orange Street has been a punk’s onestop shop for vinyl and clothing since 1995. But Mr. Suit sold records you might not find at either, having music from more contemporary artists across dozens of genres.
Over the years, Madrigale connected with the Lancaster community both through Mr. Suit and his own musical
endeavors. He performed and toured as a member of the post-hardcore outfit Sadaharu, which released several albums on CI Records, and later with garage-punk threepiece High Heels. Although Madrigale met several artists through CI Records and from performing at the Chameleon Club (Michael Kuhn of NAH and 1994! and JB Brubaker of August Burns Red were among the first to react to the news of Mr. Suit’s closure), he also made an impact on hundreds of people who were either visiting Lancaster for the first time or lived locally and needed a certain record.
“I’m thrilled to have had any impact on anyone,” said Madrigale. “I live a couple blocks away and have been here for years. (Mr. Suit) is something for everybody and for the community.” From the parents who needed records
for their kids’ ’50s-themed prom to teenagers in the suburbs who trekked into town to find a new record on the weekends, Madrigale and his shop made an impact on many people’s lives.
On Wednesday, Nov. 16, a 15-year anniversary event for Mr. Suit will be held at Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse, 112 N. Water St., Lancaster. The event will feature live music and celebrate the legacy of Madrigale’s shop, which will continue to sell records during its regular hours until Saturday, Dec. 31. More details on the event will be announced on Mr. Suit’s Instagram, @mrsuitrecords, closer to its date.
So, stop in and grab one last record from Mr. Suit, and in Madrigale’s own words, “Let’s make the rest of the year less of a funeral and more of a party, OK?”

The game of football can be fun and exciting for both players and spectators but in the case of Conestoga Valley’s match-up with Manheim Central, that was probably not the case for the Buckskins. CV traveled to Manheim on October 17th and returned with a 48-0 loss on their schedule.
Conestoga Valley struggled with Central’s offensive and defensive firepower, giving the Barons the edge in first downs (25 to 4), rushing yards (340 to 52), passing yards (209 to 88) and total yards (549 to 140). Add it all up and you get a shutout loss that drops the ‘Bucks to even on the year with a 4-4 overall mark and a 2-2 L-L mark.
Macoy Kneisley completed two-of-seven for 88 yards

passing with Dominick Epstein on the receiving end of both completions. Nick Tran added 48 yards to his season total to front the rushing attack.
FIELD HOCKEY
The field hockey team wrapped up their 2022 regular season campaign on October 12th, rolling Hempfield by a 5-0 final. Elizabeth Talley posted the clean sheet with zero saves, thanks in large part to Alaina Culbert and her three scores. Danae Ulrich matched Culbert’s first quarter score while Mikyla Rineer did the same with her third quarter goal. Culbert tacked on one final goal in the fourth for the 5-0 final.
TENNIS
The girls’ tennis team officially closed the book on 2022 on October 14th. On that day,
Jade Flores dropped her District 3-3A opening round match, falling to Cumberland Valley’s Riya Srinivas, the fourth seed in the 3A draw, by 6-2, 6-3 final.
CROSS COUNTRY
The cross-county teams made their annual late October jaunt to Ephrata for the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship, this year held on October 18th. The Lady Buckskins enjoyed the top individual runner with Seana Dougherty placing 42nd on the girls’ side with a time of 21:26.4. Kylee Antrim claimed 65th place, turning in a time of 22:14.6. Belle Marie Alston and Abigail Phillips finished 14-seconds apart with Alston taking 83rd (23:00.3) and Phillips 87th (23:14.9). Abigail Zook rounded out the scoring five and the top-100 with a time of 23:57.5.
While the girls’ side enjoyed the top individual finish, the boys had the higher team finish with 12th place. The effort was fronted by Timothy Gitonga and his 45th place time of 17:59.5. Josh Yoder was just off that pace, finishing 53rd with a time of 18:09.2. Carson Miller was up next, taking 66th with a time of 18:35.1. Joey Castronova was the next Buckskin to cross the finish line with a time of 18:50.1, good enough for 85th. Micah Kao was the final runner to count in the team standings, taking 95th with a time of 18:56.7.
VOLLEYBALL
The CV girls’ volleyball team shook off a two-game slide with wins over Cedar Crest and Manheim Township earning the Lady ‘Bucks a spot in the L-L playoffs.
Prior to those wins, however, the ‘Bucks were dealt a 3-2 loss to Penn Manor on the 13th. CV opened with wins of 25-21 and 25-23 but could not close out the match as Penn Manor ripped off 25-21, 25-21 and 15-12 wins to steal the match.
Becca Hartranft finished with 15 kills and Summer Getz racked up 45 assists. Madison Williams added two blocks while Emily Kornacki finished with 30 kills and six aces.
One day later the Lady Buckskins got back on track with a 3-0 sweep over Cedar Crest. It may have been a sweep but the Lady Falcons made CV work for the 25-20, 25-17, 25-17 final. Hartran-
ft (13 kills, 12 digs), Getz (29 assists), Kornacki (12 digs) and Williams (four aces) took their place atop to the stat lines with Rhiannon Henry matching Williams’ four aces.
A quick weekend rest had Conestoga Valley traveling to Neffsville for a 3-0 win over Manheim Township on the 17th. CV cruised to a 25-10 game one win but had to work harder to secure the final victory with 25-21 and 25-17 results in games two and three. Getz finished with 31 assists and Hartranft 16 kills to lead the way. Kornacki collected 11 digs while Henry picked up another seven aces. Camdyn Mahler chipped in with 1.5 blocks.

Jason Lichty
“Most people who own stained glass, even major churches, don’t do the scheduled renovations that are necessary,” he pointed out, adding that if repairs are done every so many years, the windows will retain their beauty and integrity for far longer.
According to Lichty, stained glass can often be authentically restored because glass is available from windows that are beyond repair or new glass can be purchased. “The miracle of stained glass is that there’s two companies making the same glass since the
1880s,” he said, noting that Paul Wissmach Glass Company in West Virginia and have both continued to make the glass they made for Tiffany and for La Farge, the other well-known American stainedglass creator.
For Lichty, a Conestoga Valley High School graduate, working on the Tiffany means he has reached goals and moved beyond. “It was my dream to open up some sort of stained glass repair shop in my hometown,” he said. It appears that repairing a Tiffany has been icing on that cake.
