Leola-based artist Jason Lichty can work in most artistic mediums. “I can paint, draw, sculpt, and create formal portraits, cartoons, abstracts,” said Lichty. But it is talking about the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) that lights up Lichty’s eyes. Referring to a painting called “Aquatic Harmony” he created for Tempo, a Boston seafood restaurant, Lichty explained, “The energy that went into that was to try to promote the CBF. I have been an advocate for save the bay (efforts) since I was in high school.”

When Krystle Chocker of Steps to Success, a Leola preschool and day care service, heard that Fritz Elementary School was holding a Trunk or Treat, she thought it would be a great idea for Steps to hold one as well. “We just got a bigger space,” said Chocker, referring to Steps’ move to Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola, earlier in the year. “What better way to bring our community together?” See Trunk Or Treat pg 5

WSM Plans Annual Rescue Mission Food Drive According to Dan Siewart, vice president of community ministries and outreach, WSM serves food to about 300 families every week. Therefore, the food collected during RMFD is instrumental in meeting the needs of the community, especially as the winter season nears. This winter, WSM estimates it will serve nearly 45,000 meals in its dining hall for men, women, and children experiencing homelessness. Over the colder months, WSM sees an increase in intakes as guests seek to escape the elements. “We appreciate people in

For the past 116 years, Water Street Mission (WSM), located at 210 S. Prince St., Lancaster, has provided men, women, and children experiencing homelessness in Lancaster County with access to medical, dental, behavioral health, spiritual, and career support. Trunk Or Treat from pg 1 The first Steps to Success Trunk or Treat, which is open to the Conestoga Valley community, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 5 to 7 p.m., in the parking lot of the Zion Lutheran Church. The event will feature a number of decorated trunks, candy, free food, and the illusions of Papa Tater. According to Steps to Success founder and executive

director Michelle Harbaugh, the event began as an outreach to parents of children who participate in the program after other planned activities were canceled due to COVID-19 concerns. “ We were hoping to do something outdoors, said Adriana Witman, school age program administrator with Steps. When the school approached the church about using the parking lot, church members were intrigued. “The church (membership) is really excited,” explained Harbaugh, who noted that the first two car owners to sign up to decorate their trunks were church members. Once the event was open to the church community, the protocol for the event became apparent. Both church members and parents of children who attend Steps to Suc-

cess have been invited to participate by decorating their trunks. Trunk themes will include Dr. Seuss and “Jurassic Park.” Organizers believe they can fit at least 40 cars in the ample lot behind the church. But candy offered from decorated trunks is only the beginning of the event. Food will include free hot dogs, chips, and beverages. Families that attend and follow the designated trick-or-treat route are encouraged to dress up, and they will also have the opportunity to enjoy the magic of Papa Tater. Tater, who specializes in comedy and illusions, has been performing in the Lancaster area for more than a decade. His shows are known for being interactive with the goal of both amazing and amusing his audience. More information on the program may be found by searching for “Steps to Success Christian Early Learning Center” on Facebook. Those wishing to attend are asked to register by calling 717803-5441 or emailing adriana witman.steps@gmail.com.

Students qualified for this honor based on their scores in the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), with less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors attaining Semifinalist status. As one of 16,000 Semifinalists across the nation, Jania will now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $30 million that will be offered in the spring. Veritas head of school Ty Fischer noted that Jania has demonstrated high academic achievement, but also aims to help others succeed. She is an

These small business owners lacked the time and resources to help themselves navigate day-to-day challenges that were threatening their business success. Seibert noted that the SBRA focuses on business improvement, employee development and family enrichment. The organization’s mission is “empowering businesses with the resources necessary to be successful and profitable through loyal, engaged employees with happy, united families.” SBRA member benefits are not only provided to the business/owner, but are extended to the employees of the business as well as the employees’ family members. These resources include favorable pricing on all insurances, including health insurance; HR services; marketing, accounting, and legal services; educational content through workshops, seminars, and podcasts; and discounts from members in a variety of industries. Safety Tips from pg 10 with contact lenses, the FDA reminds the public that consumers need a prescription for all contact lenses, including decorative or cosmetic contacts, even if the user has perfect vision. Improper contact lens use can put people at risk of contracting keratitis, a painful eye infection, or acanthamoeba keratitis, a severe, painful infection of the cornea. The two biggest risk factors for acanthamoeba keratitisare are poor lens hygiene and exposure to water while wearing lenses. In the most extreme cases, a corneal transplant is necessary. The best way to avoid eye infections is to follow proper lens care guidelines as prescribed by an eye care professional. Prevent Blindness offered several tips for safe contact lens care. Before handling contact lenses, hands should be washed with soap and water, then rinsed and dried with a lint-free towel. Contact with water should be minimized, including removing lenses before going swimming or getting into a hot tub. Contact lenses should not be rinsed with or stored in either tap water or sterile water.

Passion from pg 1

Contact lenses should be worn and replaced according to the schedule prescribed by an eye care professional. During cleaning, using fresh solution, contact lenses should be rubbed with the fingers, then rinsed with solution before being soaked - even if the solution being used is a “no-rub” variety. Contact lens cases should always be cleaned with fresh solution, not water. The empty case should be left open to air dry. Lenses should never be put in the mouth, and saliva should never be put on lenses as saliva is not sterile. Lenses should never be shared with others. Contact lens wearers should not re-use old solution or top off the solution in their lens case. Cracked or damaged lens cases should not be used. Lens cases can be a source of contamination and infection. If any eye or vision problems are experienced, the contact lenses should be removed, and an eye care professional should be contacted immediately. For more information on contact lens safety, visit https://preventblindness.org /wearing-contact-lenses/.

“How important is air and water?” asked Lichty, who is prepared with statistics to back up his concern, noting that the situation in the bay affects 64,000 square miles, 18 million people, and 30,000 fishing jobs. He noted that the CBF has an umbrella perspective, which explains how increased macadam affects runoff and the types of poisons, such as nitrogen from fertilizer and mercury from power plants, that reach the bay. “Tire rubber dust in runoff from the roads and pavement washes into the bay,” he explained, pointing out that chemicals in blacktop constantly leach into the environment. “Everything is connected,” he stated, adding that the bay is affected by agrichemicals and manure from Lancaster County. He noted that small family farms tend to be conscientious and that the CBF holds workshops to educate farmers on soil management and crop rotation. Lichty, who graduated from Conestoga Valley High School, first sold his artwork when students at the school were asked to exhibit at the Mulberry Art Studios in Lancaster. From there, he attended art school at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, selling his first commissioned piece at age 19. Following college, Lichty moved to Boston, where he connected with Tempo restaurant and received commissions from the seafood eatery. “My first thought was, ‘This place would be incredible with

stained glass,’” recalled Lichty, who at the time did not know how to create stained glass artwork. In 2016, he entered the Diablo Glass School. He followed that experience with a six-month apprenticeship with the renowned Jim Anderson at Anderson’s Boston studio, and in 2018, he created a stained-glass piece for Tempo. Lichty described the process of creating pieces for customers such as Tempo. “When a client wants a project, you have to have a rich knowledge in art history, architecture, and interior design,” said Lichty. “When you walk into a space, it will tell you what it needs (in response to) the colors, the woodwork, the countertops. You need to be in tune with that environment.” When Tempo grew in 2020, the owners asked Lichty to paint something for the expansion. “I wanted to create something easy on the eyes,” recalled Lichty, who was also thinking of CBF. “When I was making all this sealife artwork, I was thinking, ‘How can I contribute my talent to the CBF?’” said Lichty, who spent hours studying sealife to make the piece authentic. “It’s really important to do your homework,” he said. Readers who would like to learn more about Lichty’s Bay Raiser efforts may visit www.leolastainedglass.com /canvas.html and click on the CBF icon.
