Hope For The Holidays Addictions Workshop Scheduled By Ann Mead Ash
In late 2016 when TTC/Potter’s House approached leaders at Conestoga Church of the Brethren about the possibility of holding a two-part educational program concerning the heroin epidemic in Lancaster County, church members responded. “It’s needed in the community,” said pastor Jere Cassel. The first effort led to a second collaborative workshop in April of this year. According to Cassel, church members then suggested a fall workshop. Cassel met with TTC/Potter’s House ministry director Lanny Millette to discuss content. “The holiday connection was Jere’s idea,” noted Millette. “I said, ‘It’s close to the holidays; how
about how to deal with (that time of year)?’” explained Cassel. The workshop, “Holidays and Realities of Community Addictions,” will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 7, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Conestoga Church of the Brethren, 141 E. Main St., Leola. The program will include a keynote address by Samuel Mwangi, pastor of Carpenter Community Church in Brownstown, followed by a panel discussion and a period of questions from the audience. Mwangi said that he envisions a seminar that will address the situations that those dealing with addiction, those in recovery, and families of both face at the holidays. “The holidays are one of the most vulnerable times for people in recovery,” explained Mwangi, who noted that the celebratory spirit can actually make life more challenging. “It can be a very difficult time.” See Workshop pg 6

The workshop will include Mwangi as keynote speaker, along with a panel discussion and a question-and-answer period.
New Life Welcomes Lead Pastor German Christmas Market Will Support Ministry By Ann Mead Ash
Ron Bradley, who officially became the lead pastor at New Life Assembly of God, has been visiting Lancaster for more than 30 years, but he never realized that he and his family, which includes his wife, Jemma, and son, Ian, would live in the county. “Lancaster is so peaceful. We would come here just to get away,” shared Bradley, adding that his family especially enjoyed visiting a local Christian theater on their visits. Bradley has been to Lancaster so many times that when a fellow pastor from the area contacted him in early

During the last few years, the annual German Christmas Market, a fundraiser that supports the ministry of Darryl and Miriam Weaver in Germany, has undergone a number of changes. Only a year ago, the market changed locations, moving to Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community, and this year, the market, which had long been held outside, will move inside the building. For 2018, the annual German Christmas Market event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17, at Weaverland, 210 Weaverland Valley Road, East Earl. The event will kick off with a Christmas craft show beginning at 10 a.m. The craft show will continue until 4:30 p.m. The German market-style food portion See Christmas Market pg 7

Pastor from pg 1 dove on the side he had seen when traveling on Route 30. “He told me (New Life) needed a lead pastor, and he thought I was the guy,” recalled Bradley. “He wanted (permission) to give them my name.” Bradley sent his resume and cover letter to the search committee, and he heard back from the group within the same week. In June, Bradley traveled to Lancaster to meet with the board. “It was an amazing meeting, and we sensed God was in this,” remembered Bradley, who returned in late July for a candidate’s weekend. During the weekend, Bradley and his family had dinner with board members and their spouses. He also met informally with staff members and held a question-and-answer session with the congregation. On Sunday, members from the Manheim and Lancaster city New Life campuses journeyed to the main campus at 1991 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, to hear Bradley preach. In the afternoon, a business meeting was held and the congregation voted to receive Bradley as pastor. He officially began serving the church on Sept. 1. When Bradley first learned of the position at New Life, he was the care ministries pastor at Evangel Church, an Assembly of God congregation, in Scotch Plains, N.J. Bradley stated that he has been with the Assembly of God denomination since the first year after he was saved. “I met the Lord when I was 17 (during) my senior year (at Marlboro High School, Marlboro, N.J.),” said Bradley, adding that he became a Christian at a coffeehouse in Madison Township, N.J., in the fall of 1972 - a setting that he said was common during the Jesus Movement. After graduating high school, Bradley headed to Zion Bible Institute (now Northpoint College) in Providence, R.I.
“My ambition was to be a trial attorney, but I went to Bible school because I loved to share about Jesus,” explained Bradley. “My (thinking) was that if I was going to tell people about Jesus, I needed to know what I was talking about.” But Bradley’s goals were not completely on target. “After three weeks at Zion Bible Institute, the Lord told me why I was really there, and it changed the course of my life,” said Bradley, who moved on to Central Bible College in Springfield, Mo., to finish his bachelor’s degree in biblical studies in 1978. He then attended Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, which is also in Springfield, completing his master’s degree there in 1979. In December of 1979, Bradley returned to New Jersey, where he joined the staff of the Princeton Nassau Christian Center. In 1984, he and Jemma planted the New Life Assembly of God in Trenton, N.J., and he pastored there for more than 12 years before becoming an assistant professor and the campus pastor at Central Bible College. In 2007, he pastored NewSong Church in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and in December 2013, he joined the staff at Evangel Church in Scotch Plains. According to Bradley, his initial impression of New Life in Lancaster is that people are welcoming, friendly, and warm. He is looking forward to pastoring at a church that he sees is hungry to learn God’s Word and to have the Word set the direction for the congregation. “When I think of New Life’s presence in Lancaster, I think of a beacon of light,” he said. “That’s what I see … that New Life will continually be a place where people come and expect to have an encounter with Jesus Christ.” Readers who would like to learn more about the three http://www.newlife lancaster.org.

Participants in Penn Square Music Festival, a Lancaster-based young artist training program for opera singers, will perform “Death by Puccini” on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 3 p.m. at Millersville University’s Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The performance will consist of music by 19th-century Italian opera composer Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria Puccini. It will feature the classically trained, unamplified voices of nationally acclaimed singers, including soprano Chloe Olivia Moore, Lancaster native tenor Peter Scott Drackley, bass baritone Andrew Potter, and mezzo-soprano Nora Graham Smith. The performance will include Act 3 of “La bohème,” Act 2 of “Tosca,” and Act 3 of “Madama Butterfly,” operas written by Puccini.
These acts feature Tosca’s aria “Vissi d’arte” (“I live for art”), Madama Butterfly’s “Tu, tu, piccolo iddio” (“You, you, little god”), and the quartet from “La bohème.” Penn Square Music Festival gives young, classically trained singers opportunities to perform operatic and Golden Age musical theater repertoire. The program’s goal is to train the next rising stars of the opera world and bring professional opera and musical theater to the central Pennsylvania region. OPEN HOUSE 31st at 1 P.M. Closing Early Wed., Oct. and Re-Opening
Eicher Arts Center will host a program titled “Hunting the Mastodon, Running with the Caribou: Ice Age Tales From Prehistoric Pennsylvania” on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m. The program will take place at the Eicher House, 409 Cocalico St., in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park. Author and storyteller Robin Moore will share what life was like thousands of years ago in what is now Pennsylvania. The program will feature Moore’s storytelling skills and natural history knowledge, as well as demonstrations of primitive living skills using replicas of clothing and tools from the period being discussed. The program is designed to appeal to adults as well as youngsters. Moore has presented more than 5,000 interpretive history programs in the past 37 years and has written award-winning books of Pennsylvania folklore and historical fiction, such as “The Bread Sister of Sinking Creek,” which was set in the late 18th century. Sixth Service of Remembrance Scheduled More than seven years ago, Titus Kauffman, Fred Groff, and Chet Yoder organized the first Service of Remembrance at Garden Spot Village (GSV). Kauffman said that the service was based on one that was held at an Ephrata church. After the trio attended the Ephrata service, they designed the local service to offer area residents who have lost a loved one a time and place to grieve and remember. The 2018 Service of Remembrance will be held in the chapel at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 2:30 p.m. The theme of this year’s service

Among the many issues that face individuals and families dealing with addiction are a number of losses. Some may be missing friends or loved ones who have been lost to overdose. Others are grieving the loss of a marriage or relationships with children. The materialism commonly associated with the holidays can deepen problems when the resources to participate are not available. “This workshop

is “Triumph Over the Tragedies of Life,” and the speaker will be Bryan Koch, pastor of Glad Tidings Church in West Lawn and a former professional baseball player. He will share his experience of becoming a widower and amputee after experiencing a motorcycle accident. Koch will tell attendees how he lost his wife of nearly 30 years and his left leg in a motorcycle accident on June 7, 2015. Koch’s story begins when he was in high school when his talent for baseball led to his being drafted by the Chicago White Sox Major League Baseball organization. Around that same time, he became a Christian and began the discipleship process. While serving as a
Assemblies of God Churches. In addition to the speaker, the Petra Church worship team will lead worship at the event. Music may include instrumental solos and other special selections. Light refreshments will follow the service. Kauffman noted that some speakers at past events have drawn large crowds. Groff estimated that as many as 175 people usually attend. will help to create awareness so those in recovery can be on guard,” explained Mwangi, who added that children who are without their parents due to addiction issues suffer during the holidays as well. Practical steps for families of those people who have addictions or are in recovery include encouraging relationship but not enabling substance abuse. “The family needs to set boundaries and be supportive at the same time,” said Mwangi. “It’s a big challenge (because) you want to say, ‘We love you and we care and we want to be there for you,’ but the individual who is (abusing substances may) interpret that as ‘Then let me come to the house, sit around the table, and see my children.’” The panel discussion will include four area residents who can speak to the problem from different angles. Joel Jakubowski, director of Revelations of Freedom Ministries, will represent a professional perspective, Mwangi will take the pastor’s viewpoint, and Joel Carvanal will share the perspective of someone in recovery. A fourth panelist will be representative of a family member who has walked with a loved one in recovery. In addition to the speaker and panelists, organizers plan to have displays in the church fellowship area, including one representing GOAL (Global Outreach for Addiction Leadership and Learning) Project, featuring Compass Mark literature. TTC/Potter’s House is a nonprofit, Christ-centered ministry that offers a holistic approach to physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and post-release prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions. Mwangi said that as representatives of faith-based organizations, the organizers of the event want to relay the message of the Christmas story to families dealing with addiction. “A lot of people don’t know where to turn when addiction comes,” he said. “We want to bring hope to the community during this holiday season.” Readers who have questions about the workshops may call 717-826-1154. Coalition Releases Report months), we have baptized more than 50 people from (a Middle Eastern) background,” noted Darryl. “It has just been amazing to walk beside them as they … want a new life and to become Christians and all that entails,” he added. Darryl said that the church baptized a refugee from Aleppo. The man had become a Christian, but he was never baptized. “He came to us asking if he should be baptized,” recalled Darryl, who pointed the man to Scripture. When the man saw that Jesus was baptized, he wanted to be baptized too. Miriam also works with immigrants. Darryl recalled that Miriam has been especially helpful to a Middle Eastern mother and her daughter who were dealing with challenges in the refugee home they were living in. Another woman was struggling to pay for German classes, but Miriam was able to help her find a free class at the local university and the church aided in paying for transportation to and from the class. The Factory Ministries, in partnership with United Way of Lancaster County, is seeking volunteers to support the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program in Eastern Lancaster County, as they work to meet an increasing demand for free tax preparation assistance. VITA hopes to prepare an estimated 10,500 tax returns in spring 2019. Volunteers do not need to have tax expertise or experience, just a passion to help others, connect with their community, and engage in a program that is making an immediate economic difference in Lancaster County. United Way will provide free training to individuals willing to commit to volunteering as free tax preparers for VITA clients. Training takes place from November through January. VITA asks for four hours per week during tax season. Readers interested in signing up or learning more may contact Jaclyn Belew at belew@uwlanc.org.

In the last few years, with the large influx of immigrants to the area, the ministry has grown substantially. “Our church has continued to grow, and we have over 80 attending on a given Sunday,” said Darryl. CV Boys Top Red Lion, Fall to Wilson in Districts by Leah Sintic
The Buckskin boys’ soccer club met the end of the season in a 4-0 quarterfinal loss to the Wilson, the number two seed in the District Three playoffs. Wilson had previously toppled Elizabethtown by the same score before ousting CV. For the Bucks, their first-round test came in the form of a 3-2 final minute thriller over seventh seeded Red Lion on Tuesday. Not having faced the Lions in the regular season, the Bucks knew they had come ready to work if they hoped to keep their playoff run alive, and it took them a few possessions to establish their style of gameplay. “We allowed them to dictate space which made us vulnerable to their passing style, head coach Dave Hartlaub described of the early
minutes of the contest. Calling for some adjustments and gaining their footing, CV began to settle into a controlled tempo for the game, with both teams eagerly seeking a moment to strike. The first success came off the foot of CV’s Nick Denlinger who propelled the ball into the upper right quadrant out of reach of the Red Lion keeper. Seizing another opportunity before the half, Denlinger connected with the crossbar, but teammate Robbie Krasinski was ready to pounce on the second look and delivered goal number two for the Buckskins, giving them a 2-0 cushion heading into halftime. The start of the second forty belonged to Red Lion though, and they got on the scoreboard after a successful corner kick conversion. With two minutes left in regulation, Red Lion was awarded a free kick
that didn’t initially find the netting, but the ball rattled around the box giving the Lions a follow up shot that slipped past the Buckskin keeper and tied up the game. “At that moment you could see our body language go very negative, but while the ball was being placed in the middle to kick off again coaches and captains were positive and the boys regained their fight straight away, explained Hartlaub. “We pushed hard and were able to keep the ball in their space for the next two minutes. Though overtime might have looked inevitable, the Bucks relentlessly pursued the next goal, pushed the ball upfield, and earned their way to a corner kick. With several players getting a touch on the final offensive play, eventually Ryan Lapp’s header sent the ball in front of the goal to be finished by Ethan Bredeman for the golden goal with only 13 seconds remaining. “We have relied heavily on Robbie Krasinski all season for goal production, and he came through again, but as the season has gone on Nick Denlinger and Ethan Bredeman have found the net at crucial times and their goals were spectacular, praised Harlaub. subsequently ending their season. The Lady Bucks clashed with the Black Knights twice during the regular season, with split results, but this time it was Hempfield’s turn to come out on top and in turn knocked CV out of the District Three post season tournament. Madison Delgado and Gabbie Barone were both honored as first team All-Stars for their season accomplishments. Delgado was CV’s lead scorer, knocking in 11 goals and eight assists, and Barone netted eight goals complimented by two assists.
Reese Lapp was named to the second team All-Star list, and Lauren Thrush received Academic All-Star honors. The squad finished their season with an overall record of 12-5-3 and were runners up for the Section I title in the regular season. Graduating 12 seniors, the team will miss their presence and reflect on the impact they have made this season. “The seniors provided us leadership and were excellent student-athlete role models for the underclassmen, praised head coach Keith Nagley.
FOOTBALL An unfortunate 30-3 loss to Elizabethtown last Friday night sealed the post-season prospects for both the Buckskins and Bears, putting a halt to CV’s season and propelling Elizabethtown into the playoffs. After getting off to a strong start this year, CV experienced a string of four losses to close the season with an overall record of 5-5, and 3-3 in the league, bringing them just short of a qualifying rank. Injuries were an unfortunate reality that plagued the roster for the second half of the season, but the team won’t use that as an excuse to give up any effort on the field. “The Buckskins started the season off quickly with some great wins, reflected head coach Gerad Novak. “Keeping our focus and motivation is something we must overcome to regain and restore the winning traditions. Despite the bumpy end of season, it’s important not to forget the ground that was gained in the early season, as the Buckskin team recaptured the Lampeter Bowl trophy for the first time in eight years and their split record of 5-5 is the best since 2010. “The seniors did a fantastic job of taking the underclassmen under their guidance and being teachers of the game, praised Novak. “Their guidance and instruction helped build the necessary unity within the team and strengthened the fibers essential to be successful on the football field. CROSS COUNTRY The team cross country season may have reached its conclusion, but individual achievements are still on the horizon for senior Nate Grucelski. Grucelski, voted Outstanding Runner of the LL League by the Coach’s Association, finished in sixth place at the District meet with a time of 16:47.5 and is headed for States. “The goal was to qualify and then place as well as possible; Nate ran very well, explained head coach Mark Amway. The CV girls team collectively finished in 23rd in the district meet and was recently honored as a unit for their season-long attitude of teamwork and respect for fellow athletes, receiving the Section One Sportsmanship Award.

Some of the highlights include the following: a Landis Myers table sold three times to bring in $4,000; two quilts, “Have a Little Faith” and “Diamond Lite,” were resold for a total of $7,200; a theme basket, “A House Divided,” sold for $560; a copper kettle sold for $400 and a Trek bike for $370 in the pole barn auction; two gold coins sold for $2,600 each in the coin auction; contributions and matching funds totaled $110,000; baked goods sales totaled $10,000; contributions and donations, including an earlier bequest, exceeded $110,000; matching funds totaled $25,000; quilt sales totaled $33,000; and food sales generated nearly $34,000. The auction, the largest of its type in the world, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern Districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $15 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year.

St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster, will host a performance by Elisabeth von Trapp on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. A freewill offering will be received. CDs will be available for purchase. Ten percent of proceeds will be donated. Elisabeth von Trapp is the granddaughter of Maria and Baron von Trapp, whose story inspired the movie “The Sound of Music.” Music was always present in Elisabeth’s life, whether from the Baroque instruments and four-part harmonies of the family choir, the Trapp Family Singers; classical music on the turntable; songs played on the diverse collection of musical instruments in the living room, including piano, cello, guitars, ukulele, accordion, recorders, dulcimer and zither; and the voices of The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell from the open airways of Vermont radio. Inspired by her father’s guitar playing and singing, Elisabeth began taking piano lessons when she was 8. By 16, she was playing the guitar and traveling the back roads of New England performing with her siblings at weddings, gospel meetings, town halls and county fairs. Elisabeth’s voice has been heard from the subway platforms of New York City and small folk clubs and concert halls to the White House, National Cathedral and the Kennedy Center. She has released five self-produced albums, and her music has been featured on various radio and television programs. For more information, readers may call the church at 717569-3241.
