A final challenge has been adapting the script to modern sensitivities regarding how men treat women, which Sauder said has given him a lot of teachable moments about changes in what is culturally acceptable. Sauder noted that one of the challenges of the play has been the size of the set. “We are covering the entire stage with a dock,” said Sauder, who said the set will stretch into the audience, covering the first three pews. Not only will the stage bring the action closer to the audience, but during the play, members of the cast will enter the aisles, talking to the theatergoers and asking how they are enjoying the show.

appeared to have been transported from Narnia or Hobbiton. One of the ash trees in the woods has been converted into a Little Free Library. Fitted with a bookcase and glass door, along with a peaked roof, the library also has six benches situated in front of it. The Little Free Library was the dream of Don Ziegler and represents the efforts he and his wife, Priscilla, who oversees the Little Free Library, made to bring the enchanting location to Leaman Woods. Don, who is a member of the Friends of the Woods and Wetlands, was present when ash trees were being removed due to borer damage. He asked the workers to preserve more than 10 feet of one tree and to cut the top into a peak. He also asked for boards to be made from the trunk that was cut. With help from a resident who was a carpenter and the Landis Homes maintenance department, the tree was converted to a Little Free Library, which opened in May 2019. Priscilla visits the Little Free Library on a daily basis, but every two weeks she replenishes the supply with donated books from residents and organizers of the yearly Landis Homes book sale, as well as local authors who write their own stories. “The idea is that it’s a free library, and when you take the book, it’s yours, or if you have something, you can donate it,” explained Don. Each month, Priscilla removes books that have been in the library too long and takes

them to Booksavers at the Ephrata ReUzit on State. Priscilla noted that the weatherproof bookcase also contains books that are helpful in learning about the woods. “We have reference books people can borrow while they are in the woods and then put back,” she said, noting that the books cover trees and birds. In addition, a photographer took photos of all the wildflowers found in the woods and created a book with their names for the library. “So, when you see the native flowers and you don’t know what they are, you can take this along (to help identify them),” explained Priscilla. Priscilla and Don reported that the year that the library opened it was featured on https://littlefreelibrary.org as one of the most creative libraries to open that year. Recalling the ribbon cutting at the opening of the library, Priscilla noted how the community united to create the special space. “All the people involved in putting this together - builders, the person who donated the funds for us to join the Free Little Libraries, the day care - there must have been 50 people here,” she said. appeared to have been transported from Narnia or Hobbiton.

Royer’s Flowers & Gifts is collecting holiday cards and coloring pages for service members and veterans throughout November in each of its stores. Royer’s will present the collected items to the American Red Cross’ Holidays for Heroes program. Cards and coloring pages may be dropped off at any Royer’s store during normal business hours. Free coloring pages can be downloaded at www.royers.com/heroes. The Red Cross offers several guidelines for preparing the cards. People should use generic salutations such as “Dear service member” or “Dear veteran.” When writing in the card, people should express reasons why they are thankful for the service members or veterans. Those who
have a personal connection, such as a family member who served, should add that information to the card. The cards should not be overtly religious, but messages such as “Merry Christmas” or “God bless you” are acceptable. Inserts such as glitter, photos and business cards should not be included. Also, the cards should not include personal information such as telephone numbers or home or email addresses. However, the cards should be signed with the giver’s name. Family-owned Royer’s has 16 stores in Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties, including one Stephenson’s Flowers & Gifts location in Harrisburg.

BIHUMC from pg 1 19 restrictions. Prior to that, the church had held a holiday bazaar for more than 50 years. Among the many craft items that will be available for purchase will be knitted items, decorative snowmen dressed in sports-themed outfits, specialty candles, handmade jewelry, handmade greeting cards for all occasions, sewn dolls and animals, primitive decor, and decorative sofa pillows. A selection of holiday wreaths, ornaments, and centerpieces, along with treats for animals, including dogs, cats, and horses, will also be available for purchase. Organizers plan to sell lunch items, including barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs, chips, and beverages. No soup will be sold at this year’s event. Readers who have questions about the fundraiser may call 717-397-3047 and leave a message for a return call.
Writeface, a nonprofit organization that provides free writing and journaling workshops for veterans and their families, will host a spoken word festival, along with music, on Veterans Day, Thursday, Nov. 11. The program, “Veterans, Values, & Voices: Words in Search of Our Missing Peace,” will be held in partnership with Music for Everyone at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, in Steinman Hall from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The festival will feature poetry, storytelling, music, and more - all written by veterans.
Over the summer, hundreds of people located in Ben Franklin Technology Partners’ 32-county footprint in Pennsylvania visited the organization’s website to check out the rules and the application process for its $50,000 innovation contest. The eight finalists competed virtually via Zoom on Oct. 14. They made their presentations to a panel of independent judges from CARGAS, Perceptive Automata, EG Associates Group, Sheetz and Erie Insurance. The first-place winner was Faubion, located in Lancaster County, which took home a cash prize of $30,000. The company, represented by Andrew Wolgemuth and Brian Elliott, created a 3D printing technology and newly developed wax resins that produce replicas of unique bridal ring designs.
Writeface’s process helps veterans who are having difficulty readjusting to explore their own feelings and helps them communicate more effectively to family, friends, and co-workers. Writeface strives to change the statistics for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Anyone interested in learning about the organization’s programs is encouraged to attend. The event is free and open to the public. Masks are required for all attendees at the Ware Center. For more information, visit www.write face.org or call Scott Hower at 717-209-0410.
