A Chance To Help The Elves Deliver BY ANN MEAD ASH
Ferris Wheel Clothing Bank in Lititz has a big event coming up. Long before Christmas arrives, Ferris Wheel founder Sherry Gassert; her assistant, Jen Lewis; and Gassert’s daughter, Stephanie Stiffler, will join with a few other volunteers and dress as elves to provide Christmas in the form of presents to Lancaster County children from infants to age 12. The event, appropriately dubbed the Elf Party, will be held in the lodge at Lloyd H. Roland Memorial Park, 221 N. 11th St., Akron, on Sunday, Dec. 4, from noon to 2 p.m. For children to participate in the Sherry Gassert (left) and event, parents must search for “Ferris Jen Lewis are gathering Wheel Clothing Bank” on Facebook and gifts to give away at the watch for the post announcing the party, Ferris Wheel Clothing
which will be made during November. Parents may then sign children up to attend by messaging through Facebook, calling 717-799-1933 or emailing FerrisWheel 14@hotmail.com. Last year, more than 160 children attended the Elf Party, but this year Gassert would like to see 200 attend. During registration, Gassert, or one of her elves, learns the children’s ages and the types of toys and games they prefer. “So we can gear the (gift) bags towards what they like,” explained Gassert, who then turns to her donors for help purchasing items. “These bags get stuffed so full it’s amazing,” said Gassert, who works with Lewis and Stiffler to prepare the gift bags ahead of time. Each bag is customized to the individual child to be sure gifts are age appropriate and safe.

On Nov. 1, Water Street Mission issued a challenge to the Lancaster community to break its food collection record by Dec. 22. Last year, the organization collected 94,000 pounds of food, breaking all of its previous records. This year, Water Street Mission hopes to amass 100,000 pounds of donated food before Christmas. This call to action is necessitated by a recent increase in the number of those in need of Water Street Mission’s services, such as its emergency shelter and outreach center. “Throughout the summer and into the fall, the emergency shelter has filled up, which doesn’t normally happen,” said Matt Clement, director of marketing for Water Street Mission. “We’re full through every week and we’re reaching capacity. The food drive is a huge part of fulfilling the need that we’re seeing.” The emergency shelter provides those experiencing homelessness with a hot meal and a safe place to sleep, as well as opportunities to move into residential programs and receive further assistance. The shelter does not normally receive an increase in engagement until the winter months but has noticed an alarming spike in those requiring assistance far sooner than usual, which Water Street Mission attributes to the rising costs of food, rent and fuel.
Water Street Mission serves 2,000 families on average each month through its outreach center. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays each week, the outreach center provides families with an opportunity to pick up dairy products, fruits, vegetables, eggs, desserts and occasionally hygiene items, distributing over 30,000 pounds of food on a monthly basis. On Fridays, whatever goods are left over for the week are able to be picked up without presenting an ID. “The goal for the outreach center is to create a barrier between people and homelessness,” said Clement. “If someone has to choose between paying their bills and buying groceries for the month, we take the groceries out of the equation so they can focus on keeping their housing.” Water Street Mission is always in need of volunteers and due to the current demand is also looking to bring aboard more employees in roles such as life coaches and case managers. “If we want to grow our capacity and meet community needs, we require quite a few people,” said Clement. “The big call to action is for people to donate. That would be massive.” To view a list of items needed for the drive or to make a financial donation, visit https://wsm.org.

CVHS from pg 1 In spite of the large cast size, Whitman pointed out that with the exception of the three leads and the narrator, there are no large roles. However, the students are working on the challenge of acting when they have nothing to say. “Being able to stay in character in scenes where they are in a trance or stuck in a position (is not easy),” commented Whitman. “One actor needs to be frozen and stay that way,” he said, adding that in another sequence characters must move in a synchronized fashion. Whitman is pleased with the large number of freshmen
who auditioned, two of whom won lead roles. The students gained experience by taking part in a drama program that has existed for many years at the middle school. The free event will educate people on the program’s goal, process and how to enroll in and benefit from its services. Project Lifesaver is a search and rescue program for public safety agencies, founded in Virginia in 1999 by an officer with the Chesapeake Bay’s search and rescue team. The program was created to help people locate loved ones who are prone to wandering due to a cognitive condition such as dementia, autism or Down syndrome. When a family

With the state police on board, Project Lifesaver is now able to cover all of Lancaster County in partnership with 18 other local police departments. Due to the fact that state police have a wide jurisdiction, any area that does not have a police department enrolled in the program can still be covered within the program. In October of 2019, Osborne’s father, who had dementia and was in an assisted living program, wandered from his facility and was found deceased. Osborne heard about Project Lifesaver shortly after and began researching what it would take to implement it. She spoke with the Pilot Club of Lancaster, which soon became the project’s main sponsor, and has become an advocate for the program and its success. Several officers among local police departments are trained and equipped with a receiver and are dispatched in the event someone goes missing. Lewis ex plained that when the families arrive at the lodge, they check in with her to make sure the names and ages of these children are correct, and they are given a tag before proceeding to the next station, where Stiffler and other elves meet them. Children are then divided according to age to retrieve their bags. This year, the children will also have an opportunity to complete a coloring page and to meet Santa Claus for a photo. Gassert’s husband, Randy, will be on hand to take free photos that can be sent to families as well. Colored pages will be given to Santa. Parents will receive a small gift as well, and children will leave with a bag of treats to enjoy, along with their presents. Gassert said that the lodge is well suited to the party. “The building’s great,” she reported. “It’s perfect for our use.” Gassert noted that the lodge has a fireplace, and that volunteers decorate for the party. “It was just beautiful inside, the way we set it up,” she said. Ferris W heel receives ample donations of clothing and gifts for children, but Gassert noted that monetary donations could be used to defray other costs, such as rental fees, to help the elves deliver at Christmastime. Individuals who wish to donate may contact Gassert at the aforementioned email or phone number. More information about the organization may be found at https://ferris wheel14.wixsite.com/fwci.

Fairmount, 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata, will host a free WellSpan Diabetes Day program called “Diabetes: The Heart of the Matter” on Tuesday, Nov. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. The event will take place in the Farm Crest Community Room. The public is invited to attend. Exhibitors will share food samples, recipes, and exercise demos from 6 to 7 p.m. Kelly Trynosky, WellSpan’s program director of disease management, will speak at 7 p.m. on “Diabetes and Heart Disease” and will discuss the role of healthy eating, physical activity, and blood sugar control in helping to keep the heart healthy. Tables for donations will be set up in the Wheat Ridge lobby on the west side of the Fairmount campus. Local residents may drop off unexpired, nonperishable food items and paper goods just inside the first set of doors. Donations most needed at this time are juices and broth, canned chunky soups, crackers, instant rice, macaroni and cheese, pasta sauce, cereal cups for kids, condiments, size 6 diapers, and paper goods. Kings Return To Stop In Lancaster The a cappella quartet Kings Return will make a stop in Lancaster on Friday, Nov. 11. A performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Great Hall at The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. Kings Return gained attention during the height of the pandemic when videos of the group singing in stairwells were posted on social media.
The ensemble is inspired by gospel, jazz, R&B, soul, and classical music and performs diverse arrangements from “Ave Maria” and the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love” to “God Bless America” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” The group’s new album, “Rove,” was released in late September. For tickets, visit www .lancastertrust.com.
