History And Drama CVHS To Present “Radium Girls” BY ANN MEAD ASH
incent Whitman, director of Conestoga Valley High School’s (CVHS) fall production “Radium Girls,” knew things were falling into place for the show when he walked into the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store and found hundreds of cans of fluorescent paint for sale. “Radium Girls” focuses on young women who are working as painters of luminous watch dials, so the fluorescent paint would be especially useful in staging the show. “Radium Girls,” written by D.W. Gregory and based on a lawsuit that changed employment history, will be presented at the school, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 19 and 20, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m.
V
Set in 1926, when radium, which had been discovered by Madame Curie, was being used in a variety of ways, the play tells the stories of the painters who are encouraged to tip their painting brushes with their lips. When the women begin to display symptoms of a mysterious disease, the workers are pitted against the owners and administrators of U.S. Radium Corporation. The play pays homage to the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter played by Sierra Land, who worked to bring the company to justice. Grace’s chief adversary is Arthur Roeder, played by Mason Hutchinson. Roeder, president of U.S. Radium, finds it hard to believe that Curie’s miraculous discovery could cause the illnesses affecting his employees. Other cast members include Jenna Rychner as Irene Rudolph and
Katerina Lingo as Kathryn Shaub. “It’s such a passionate show. There’s so much involved, and it’s just a good story,” said Whitman, who added that tasteful enhancements will bring a new perspective to the historical drama to keep the presentation lively. “We are adding a little music to the scenes where the reporters narrate what’s happening,” he said. “That adds a whole new dimension to the show.” Another touch will be adding a group of girls who will sit to the back of the stage throughout the entire show, where they will be seen in silhouette. “They are the girls working (in the factory),” explained Whitman, who noted the girls will use their phones to light up the area with a greenish hue. “It will look like they’re painting with fluorescent paint,” said Whitman. Respecting The Flag
NationsWorship To Come To Ephrata
Retirement policy for an American flag recommends that when the flag is worn beyond repair, it should be burned in a simple manner with dignity and respect. For several years now, Boy Scouts of America, Troop 83, Leola, has held a fall ceremony to retire flags in accordance with this policy. Although no ceremony was held in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, on Oct. 11 of this year, the Scouts, along with five veterans and more than 20 other members of the community, met at the Upper Leacock Township

During 2020 when COVID-19 restrictions were isolating people from each other, Global Disciples, an organization based in Lancaster, decided to find a way to bring them together. “In the midst of the pandemic, we said, ‘Is there a way for us to gather online and worship God? To gather all across the globe and express our unity in Christ?’” said global worship specialist Tim Bentch. See Global Disciples pg 7

His leadership spurred the organization to embrace a broader leadership role in the community and expand its purpose as a true philanthropic partner for Lancaster County. Since that time, the High Family has established multiple funds with the Community Foundation, and the organizations have worked closely to support shared initiatives, including investments in SoWe and the Lancaster Cares COVID-19 Relief Fund. Five years ago, High Foundation stepped into another leading role as a presenting sponsor of the Extraordinary Give. Its leadership gift, alongside funds from Rodgers & Associates and the Community Foundation, means that every dollar donated during the annual 24-hour giving day is stretched to expand the benefit to the more than 500 participating nonprofit organizations. Troop 83 from pg 1 War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) building, 54 W. Main St., Leola, to hold a retirement ceremony for flags that had become too tattered to fly. Scoutmaster Steve Eddy opened the event by welcoming those who had gathered and honoring the veterans who were present and asking for a moment of silence to honor veterans who had passed or who had given their lives for their country. Scout Ryan Slezak was master of ceremonies for the event. He led the honor guard to the front of the building, where worn flags were replaced with new ones. When the group returned to the main hall, Aidan Nash, Troop 83 chaplain aide, gave the invocation. He noted, “We know the flag is a representation of what makes America so special - the values of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” and he offered thanks to all those who have sacrificed for the country. Rep. Keith Greiner addressed those gathered, thanking all for their commitment to honoring the country through the flag retirement ceremony. “Our flag is a powerful living symbol at home and around the world,” he said. “Many have fought for it
and died in the name of freedom. It’s appropriate to put it to rest in a fitting and dignified manner.” Veteran Charlie Letteer, Troop 83 committee chair, extended his thanks to veterans for their service and discussed his own service in the Air Force. He mentioned highlights of his service, including the Air Force playing football against Penn State in the 1970s. During each flag retirement ceremony, the Scouts cut a flag into its separate parts as a symbolic retirement for all the flags that would be burned in the fires behind the building. As the Scouts cut the flag, Life Scout Josh Fidler spoke about the importance of destroying the flag in a dignified manner, noting that the red stripes stand for valor and bravery, the white stripes for purity and innocence, and the blue canton for vigilance, perseverance, and justice. He added that red stripes remind us of bloodshed and the white stripes remind us of the tears shed by those who lost sons and daughters. Fidler also read “Remember Me” before the group moved to the back of the building, where the firepits were prepared to receive the retired flags.

25 for 20 Game Format Special Games Extra Sunday, November 14 Doors Open ................... 2:00PM Bingo ..................... 3:00-5:00PM The 2020 event involved videos, Zoom, and livestream technology to bring people together. For 2021, NationsWorship will also include a live component, which will be held at DOVE Westgate Church, 1755 W. Main St., Ephrata, on Friday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. The event will be livestreamed and also broadcast again at 10:30 p.m. The video will be available on demand through Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022. According to Bentch, the event will include videos from a number of cultures around the world. “It’s a chance for the church here in America to worship (along) with unique expression of worship from Africa and Asia,” said Bentch.
“The worship may come from a village of brand-new believers, and it may be very simple - just clapping and singing,” he said. “Those are parts that really move my heart.” Bentch also described a modern worship song, “Glory to the Righteous One,” which is being written for the event by James and Daniella, a couple in Rwanda who are musicians and worship leaders. “On that song, I am working with people in India, Mexico, Nepal, and Ethiopia and videotaping them singing along on the chorus,” said Bentch. Bentch said that the 2021 NationsWorship is based on Isaiah 24:16, which reads in part, “From the farthest part of the earth comes the sound of songs.” “(There will be) all these
voices coming together and worshiping God as one,” said Bentch, who noted that the DOVE worship team will lead several songs and that a diverse worship choir is being created for the event, which Bentch noted has become important for the international partners. “They told us last year, ‘This is the first time we really felt connected,’” explained Bentch, “and we are honored to worship together with our brothers and sisters from diverse places of the world.” DOVE Westgate in Ephrata can accommodate 900 worshipers. Those wishing to attend NationsWorship live are asked to visit http://global disciples.org/nationsworship to register prior to the event.

Bentch said the virtual event, NationsWorship, is significant because it crosses cultural, political, and international boundaries. “It’s a chance for believers to stand together as one, and we won’t allow different perspectives and other COVID divisions to come between us,” he said. For 25 years, Global Disciples has worked with clusters of churches in Africa, Asia, and the Americas to train members of churches in those areas to be missionaries in their homelands. “Our goal is to help people come to know Jesus as Lord and Savior by working through local churches that are closer to those unreached areas,” explained Bentch.

Cella Berardi, debuting as Susan Walker, will employ her singing, acting and dancing

Program To Highlight Strasburg Seniors U.S. History, Music To Meet
Matthew Dodd will present “Songs and Stories of the Red, White and Blue” on Sunday, Nov. 14, at 2 p.m. at the Eicher Arts Center, 409 Cocalico St., in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park. Dodd’s program will include notable patriotic songs from U.S. history, including George M. Cohan’s “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” Against the backdrop of different American flags representing the eras when each of the songs in the program was composed, he will sing the lyrics, play the music on the guitar and fiddle and tell stories about the songs’ creation and the people who composed them. A former teacher with a strong interest in history as well as music, Dodd has become a Pennsylvanian troubadour, offering music and
history programs featuring different American themes and historical periods. The program will take place in the Eicher House, which originated as the Eicher farmhouse building in the 1730s. To save the Eicher House and the smaller Eicher Sisters House nearby from demolition in the 1980s, the nonprofit Eicher Arts Center Inc. was formed to work with Ephrata Borough to restore and find new uses for the structures. Dodd’s program is the final program on the Eicher Arts Center’s 2021 schedule of cultural and entertainment events for the public. Admission to the Nov. 14 program is free. Donations to the Arts Center will be accepted. The Arts Center urges audience members to bring masks to wear at the event.

Wiederseim To Sell Collection Of Ed And Carol Stoudt Of Stoudts’ Black Angus Brewery and Pub Sale To Take Place In Phoenixville On July 24
This is a vintage Wurlitzer juke box. Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.
The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively
for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel
running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.” Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. A preview starts Monday, July 19, and runs through Friday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held at Wiederseim’s facility, located at 1041 W. Bridge St., Phoenixville, Pa. For additional information, call 610-827-1910 or visit www.wiederseim.com.
The massive Art Deco brass chandeliers are from Stoudt’s Bier Hall.
July Is Customer Appreciation Month At The Emporium The Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium in Burlington City, N.J., will continue its year-long celebration of 20 years in business with Customer Appreciation Month all July. The Emporium will give away three gift certificates at the end of the month. Three lucky customers will have a chance to win a $50, $25, or $15 gift certificate to the multidealer shop. Each time a customer receives an invoice, they will receive a raffle ticket, thus the more a customer buys, the more chances they have of winning. Also, each month during the summer, the front sales display case will highlight dealer’s best or unusual items from their booth or case. The Emporium will be divided into three sections, starting with its dealers located on Route 130 and ending with the dealers on River Continued on page 5

The Ephrata Cloister will offer a Virtual Ephrata Academy presentation on Thursday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. via Zoom. Zachary Long, volunteer and special events coordinator at Pennsbury Manor, will share the story of clear toy candy, as well as the molds and manufacturers who made it all possible. He will also share some of his collection of candy molds. Clear toy candy is a traditional confectionery that has origins in Germany, England, and Scotland, with forms of this candy dating back to the 17th century. Clear toy candy quickly became an art form and is often made throughout the Christmas and Easter seasons. The program is free but requires advance registration by visiting www.EphrataCloister.org and clicking on “Events.” The Virtual Ephrata Academy program is presented on the second Thursday of each month except December by the Historic Ephrata Cloister. Details on upcoming holiday programs at the historic site can be found at the aforementioned website.
