SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

VOL LVI • NO 48

The Salvation Army Seeks Help To #RescueChristmas hristmas is coming, but like so much this year, it may look markedly different. Uncertainty surrounds one of the quintessential signs of the holiday The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign. With store closings across the country, a decrease in inperson visits to retail locations, and individuals carrying less cash, the red kettles may be fewer in number and might collect a reduced amount compared with previous years. In hopes of offsetting the anticipated decrease and to keep up with the increased need for services, The Salvation Army USA has launched #RescueChristmas. The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps distributed water and information about #RescueChristmas on Sept. 18 to kickstart local fundraising efforts. Lancaster commanding officer Maj. Dean Satterlee noted that the Red Kettle campaign has historically been The Salvation Army’s main fundraising campaign. “We need the community’s help more than ever this year to help us rescue Christmas for so many in need,” Satterlee said. “We know the Lancaster community has always answered the call to help those in

C

need, and we are optimistic this campaign will be no different.” With more people facing hardship this year, the opportunity to help is greater than ever. “Because of COVID-19, we have seen our 2020 service numbers grow to be significantly higher,” Satterlee said. “After the Great Recession of 2008 ended, The Salvation Army served an additional 10 million people over the following three years, and we expect a similar prolonged need from this current pandemic.” Since March, The Salvation Army USA has provided more than 100 million meals, which is a 155% increase over the same period last year. In addition to the need for food relief, housing has been a main focus of The Salvation Army’s recent service. With many Americans owing money for missed rent or mortgage payments, the organization anticipates a substantial increase in requests for emergency financial help for expenses such as rent/mortgage payments, utility bills, and food. Locally, The Salvation Army has provided almost $13,000 in rental and utility assistance since March. See Salvation Army pg 4

In this constant onthe-go world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed at times. Shopping habits have drastically changed due to an increase in big box retailers and a boom in online purchasing. As a result of that, many have noticed something missing from their holiday traditions, taking away from the spark of the season. Making time for a tangible, personal shopping experience is beneficial. There has never been a better time for nostalgia than now. What sets the Shady Maple Gift Shop apart from other stores is that it brings back fond memories of yesteryear. “Every year we have a stretch goal. That allows people to ‘give extra,’ explained LCCF communications manager Aaron Spangler. With the assistance of the stretch goal, last year’s ExtraGive raised $10.9 million, for a total of $53.5 million since the event’s inception in 2012. The hope is that the 2020 ExtraGive will do as well or better. Spangler noted that when the shutdown was announced in March, the ExtraGive organizers knew that this year’s event would be different. “We were a little unsure about how everything was going to go, Spangler commented, “but we have more

sponsors this year than ever before. More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. To qualify, potential participants must serve Lancaster County residents, be registered 501(c)(3) organizations in good standing, and have independent audits or reviews. In typical years, about 80 to 100 ExtraGive social events are held across Lancaster County during the 24 hours. However, this year, LCCF is requiring organizations to adhere to COVID-19 mitigation guidelines, so Spangler anticipates fewer socials. To encourage participants to adapt, LCCF

“ We have served over 10,000 meals with our food relief assistance so far during this pandemic,” Satterlee reported. “In addition, we have clocked thousands of hours of disaster relief, social service, and emotional spiritual care given by dozens of employees and volunteers during this time.”

Since 1865, The Salvation Army has been providing social and spiritual services to communities around the world. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. “It’s one of the more fun junior shows,” said director Alex Weaver, who is grappling with the challenges of rehearsing under COVID-19 restrictions, dividing the 36member cast into “family groupings,” and teaching the show ’s lovebirds, Harold Hill, played by Derrick Lambert, and Marian Paroo, played by Soren Lefever, how to portray emotion without getting too close or looking directly at each other while singing. The plot of the musical revolves around Hill, a con man who pretends to be a band leader. He sells musical instruments and band uniforms to the residents of River City, Iowa, while promising to train the members of the new band. The townspeople, with the exception of librarian and piano teacher Paroo, fall for Hill’s tricks. Although Paroo sees the truth, after witnessing Hill helping her younger brother, Winthrop, played by Brandt Esh, overcome his lisp, Paroo begins to fall for the trickster. Because “The Music Man” is such a popular show, Weaver is planning to deliver the classic tale but still offer audiences a bit of a fresh take by encouraging his actors, ages 9 to 17, to look into the depth of their characters. “I am a big fan of

character development,” said Weaver. “I am trying to help them understand that every line in the script is in there for a reason to help them … understand their character a little better.” According to Weaver, the exercise in exploring character personality helps the students “broaden their horizons as they grow in their acting.” Weaver noted that it has been satisfying to see students take a break from what is happening in the world when they come to rehearsals. “(I enjoy) seeing the kids come in here and have fun for three or four hours and forget about everything else in a safe environment putting on a show,” he said. The director would like to see audience members have a similar experience. “I really hope audiences can see there is still fun to be had in bad times,” he said, adding that he also hopes the theme of authenticity will shine through. “The message behind the show is being able to find your true self,” he explained. “You don’t have to lie or be fake. It’s OK to be who you are.” Tickets are limited, and the theater will be at 50% capacity. Tickets to the show are available at https://cavod.org/theatre/ or by calling 717-354-3355.

We’re excited that we can be involved in these different areas of community life.” More information about the services the Samaritan Center offers may be found at http://scclanc.org.

Steve Schedler, who officially became executive director of the Samaritan Counseling Center on Sept. 8, is impressed with the staff he has joined. “One of the amazing things about Samaritan Center is our amazing team,” he said, noting that many of the dedicated staff members have been there for more than a decade and at least one for 25 years. “It’s great to be part of something that people have put a lot of passion and energy into for many years.” Schedler, who served the Naaman Center in Elizabethtown for 10 years, lastly as executive director, applied for the position last spring. “I had a great experience with the search committee, and when I was offered the position, I enthusiastically accepted,” said Schedler. Schedler, who lives in Hershey with his family, is no stranger to Lancaster County. He noted that in his work with the Naaman Center, he often drove to that center’s various locations. A Central Pennsylvania native, he attended Penn State University for his bachelor’s degree in psychology and earned his Master of Social Work at Temple University. Schedler holds certifications in advanced alcohol and drug counseling

and a Certificate of Competency in Problem Gambling through the Pennsylvania Certification Board. He is involved with the Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care and GOAL Project. While working at the Naaman Center, Schedler helped lead the effort to join that organization with Pennsylvania Adult and Teen Challenge. Schedler had heard about the reputation of the Samaritan Center and its positive effect on the community before considering joining the team. “The impact Samaritan has in this region is significant,” he said. “I was aware of the good work they have been doing for many years.” The Samaritan Counseling Center, 1803 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, began in 1987 with a mission to foster hope and healing through professional counseling, consultation, and education. The organization subsidizes fees for individuals, families, and children in need and provides quality programming on mental health issues. “It’s important to understand that Samaritan does more than just counseling,” said Schedler, who noted that the organization provides consulting services, as well as TeenHope, a mental health screening program that assesses depression and

are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the

Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17room Italianate villa. If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15-foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion.” Take a self-guided walking or Segway tour to learn more about some of the historic downtown. Visit the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center to learn more about the town’s history, where there’s even a working model of the Switchback Railroad, one of the very earliest in the region. ways of the area’s storied past make for excellent outdoor recreation today. Take a 9mile downhill bike trip on the Switchback Trail to the picturesque Broadway in downtown Jim Thorpe. Bike or hike through the Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail for some truly spectacular scenery, or visit any of the numerous local trailheads accessible from town. Take to the water for a challenging whitewater rafting ride or take a scenic kayak paddle through the gorge and surrounding waterways. Several outfitters are available to arrange tours to explore the region’s waters. Naturalists may want to spend a relaxing afternoon at the Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary.

Any tour of the village must include Historic Stone Row, a series of stone row houses Asa Packer built for his engineers and foremen of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. You’ll also find Victorian buildings along Broadway now housing cute shops offering everything from handmade soaps and pottery to wine tasting rooms, antiques and art galleries. Don’t miss Somersault Letterpress, a vintage letterpress and creative studio, or Rainbow’s End, a quaint corner candy shop sure to amaze kids (and kids at heart) Outdoors enthusiasts can enjoy an entirely different aspect of Jim Thorpe, no matter what the season. CV Boys’ Soccer, Field Hockey Seasons End

Conestoga Valley’s Michael Wahba gets a kick away against Manheim Township’s Garrett Campagna during the Buckskins’ 3-0, District Three playoff loss to the host Blue Streaks last Wednesday. BY LEAH SINTIC

Due to the slim playoff pools this season, the CV boys’ soccer team found themselves just barely outside the cut for L-L League playoffs, but extended their season with a District III 4A playoff berth on Wednesday, November

4th, where they bowed out to Manheim Township, 3-0. In the quarterfinal bout, Township, the No. 3 seed, struck early, netting their first of three goals after just 12 minutes on the field, and were able to cushion their lead with a pair of goals midway through the second half.

CV keeper Luke Snader faced a barrage of 16 Township shots on goal and collected 13 saves in the loss, bringing his season total to 48. In regular season standings, the Buckskins finished second in Section One, just behind Manheim Township, who dealt the Bucks all three of their losses this season (8-3). FIELD HOCKEY The Lady Bucks’ field hockey team also reached the end of their season in a PIAA District III quarterfinal, falling 1-0 to ELCO on Wednesday, November 4th. In a similar tale to boys soccer, the field hockey squad narrowly missed qualifying for L-L League playoffs, but their 9-4 record earned them a fifth seed in District III, where they took on the fourth seeded Raiders. After three scoreless periods, the lone goal of the contest was

supplied by ELCO’s Ashley Yoh at the 10:53 minute mark in the final quarter. “We played well this season scoring a lot of goals in our wins and limited all teams to one goal or less against us,” reflected head coach Kelly Dearolf referring to the team’s season accumulation of 43 goals scored, and only 11 allowed. Each of the team’s five seniors lend unique strengths that will be missed next year. Abby Morley (13 goals, 4 assists) didn’t just lead the CV club in scoring this year, but was the top scorer in Section One. Fellow senior Ellie Livingston’s five goals and four assists, ranked her third in scoring for the Section. Bella Silvaggio applied her prowess to the defensive end of the field, playing closely alongside CV keeper Brooke Eberly, who racked up 53 saves. Corinne Querry battled back to the field after injury as a versatile and valuable Buckskin asset. “Our five seniors are fantastic leaders and a huge reason for our team’s success,” Dearolf credited. “We have a great group and we feel blessed that we had the opportunity to play this year.” FOOTBALL CV football added their fourth win to their record on Friday, October 30, rolling over McCaskey, 35-0. “The defense rose to the occasion with another outstanding effort versus McCaskey,” coach Gerad Novak was quick to credit. “They were relentless in their pursuit of the ball and shutting down the McCaskey running and passing game.” That Buckskin defense held the Red Tornado to just 35 yards of offense and two first downs-in the entire game. “The defense was suffocating,” praised Novak. Michael Burnett and Zach Fisher each provided a pivotal interception and pass break-ups, and Josue Marente pounced on

two McCaskey fumbles, regaining the ball for CV. Sophomore Wyatt Wolgemuth blocked a McCaskey punt, setting the stage for a CV touchdown, one of five trips to the end zone for the Bucks. Getting the job done offensively was another sophomore, Nick Tran, who entered the contest off the bench and gathered 119 yards and two touchdowns in nine carries. “Nick Tran took advantage of his opportunity when his number was called Friday night,” pointed out Novak. CV’s Jaiyell Plowden also ran in a pair of touchdowns (73 total rushing yards), and Aiden Johnson made himself available for a 10-yard TD pass from quarterback Macoy Kneisley. GIRLS’ SOCCER The girls’ soccer team (5-4-1) has reached its 2020 conclusion, and with it comes a leadership shift as head coach Keith Nagley closes his final season leading the club. Coach Nagley’s seven years at the helm of CV girls soccer garnered an overall track record of 91-34-11, three Section I Championships (2015, 2016, 2017), and a District III title in 2017 that preceded a run to the PIAA semi-finals. Under his guidance, the Lady Bucks earned the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award

Keith Nagley CV Girls Soccer Coach

in 2014-2020, and the USC Team Ethics Award 2016-2020. Coach Nagley is also a threetime recipient of the L-L Section I Coach of the Year award, earning the distinction in 2016, 2018, and 2019, and served as the Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association All-State Chairman for 14 years, (2005-2019). Currently he holds the second VicePresident role of the PA Soccer Coaches Association. “Coach Nagley is a class act,” described Conestoga Valley Athletic Director, Dina Henry. “He is a great coach and has earned respect from his players, their parents, and his opponents. He will be hard to replace and we will miss him on the CV soccer field.”

Melody Karick, the program director for Meadow View, Garden Spot Village’s (GSV) new memory support facility located on South Kinzer Avenue in New Holland, sees the new 40,000-square-foot building, which includes two mirror-image sections named Amber and Pearl, as a mini version of GSV. “People live here as a community, said Karick, gesturing to the Town Square area of the building, which includes a general store, cosmetology shop, bistro, and chapel. “They visit each other. Karick noted that only the front door and the gates to the five outdoor courtyards are locked. Within the walls, residents may move about freely. The design is focused on allowing those with dementia to continue to live with normalcy. “Dementia is not a disease that needs to take normalcy (from patients), Karick said. “It’s not the end of life. We just need to help them learn to live a new life with new purpose. A training room located off Town Square will serve as a meeting place for clubs led by residents. To help residents become familiar with their surroundings, the building has been designed with cues they can follow. “There are two gray doors with no trim, pointed out Karick. “Those doors are for team members. A door between the two gray doors has trim and color because it is a restroom for all to use. outreach program. “We can have more than 200 people staying with us,â€? Crowley said. WSM had opened Providence Shelter this past winter, expanding WSM’s emergency housing capacity. The facility has a top-of-the-line air filtration system like those used in hospitals. It was installed because it works with the HVAC system to remove odors and promote the general health of occupants. It turns out that it is also what is recommended for COVID19 control. Additionally, single beds rather than bunk beds were purchased to honor the dignity of guests. The beds can be spread out for social distancing. “We’ve experienced God’s providence in some of the design features,â€? Crowley commented. “We’ve been able to serve everybody that’s needed us so far. ‌ We will find creative ways to address (greater needs).â€?

Even with the additional help from community food pantries, WSM serves 400 meals a day in its dining hall and provides boxes of groceries to about 600 households every week. Crowley said he anticipates distributing more than 1,000 boxes for Thanksgiving and wants to ensure each one includes a turkey. WSM will not offer Christmas boxes, Crowley noted, as Lancaster County Project for the Needy has taken on that service. WSM is a part of HungerFree Lancaster as well as LanCo MyHome, the Lancaster County Homeless Coalition. More than 70 organizations are involved in serving poor and homeless individuals and families in Lancaster County. Three meals a day, seven days a week are available free of charge in Lancaster city, Crowley said. That enables WSM to focus on serving its long-term residents, those who stay in the emergency shelter, and those who participate in the

To ensure that WSM is ready to feed its guests and clients this winter, WSM launched its annual Rescue Mission Food Drive (RMFD) on Nov. 1. The organization will make a special effort to collect 120,000 pounds of nonperishable food items by Sunday, Dec. 20. A list of suggested items has been posted at http://rescuemission fooddrive.org/. Glass containers are discouraged. Donations may be dropped off at Boscov’s at Park City, Javateas, the Lancaster city locations of

Murray Insurance, and the Lancaster County locations of Sheetz, Weis Markets, AAA Central Penn, and M&T Bank. Large quantities may be delivered to the WSM food dock, 210 S. Prince St., Lancaster, on Mondays and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Financial contributions may be made at https://wsm.org/make-an -impact/donate. For more information, readers may also call 717-393-7709. Individuals who need support may dial 211 to be referred to programs for which they qualify.

Support Group Plans Meeting The No Longer Alone Family Support Group, supported by Landis Communities, will hold its next meeting on Sunday, Nov. 15, from 3 to 5 p.m. via Zoom. The group usually meets on the fourth Sunday of the month, but a change was made in November due to Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 26. The guest speakers for November will be Jonas and Barb Borntrager. Barb is author of the book “A Mother Held Hostage: My Journey With Jon. The Borntragers’ presentation, titled “The

Story of Our Life With Jon, will be followed by a time of sharing. The monthly meetings provide a place for those who have a loved one living with mental illness to learn and share their experiences. Meetings will be held via Zoom until further notice and will return to Landis Communities when it is safe to do so. For more information or to receive a monthly meeting reminder, readers may call 717-381-3599 or email JAlbright@landis.org by noon on Friday, Nov. 13.

Fairmount Posts Food Drive A food drive will take place at Fairmount, 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata, through Monday, Nov. 23. The collected items will be donated to two local organizations, Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank and Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services. Both organizations have experienced an increased need for their services due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tables for food collection will be set up in the Wheat Ridge entryway on the west side of the Fairmount campus. Local community residents may drop off unexpired food items and paper goods just inside the first set of doors. Stockings For Soldiers Campaign Underway

Royer’s To Collect Holiday Cards, Coloring Pages Royer’s Flowers & Gifts is collecting holiday cards and coloring pages for service members and veterans throughout November in each of its stores. Royer’s will present the collected items to the American Red Cross’ Holidays for Heroes program. Cards and coloring pages may be dropped off at any Royer’s store during normal business hours. Face coverings are required. Free coloring pages can be downloaded at www.royers.com/heroes. The Red Cross offers several guidelines for preparing the cards. People should use generic salutations such as “Dear Service Member” or “Dear Veteran.” When writing in the card, people should express reasons why they are thankful for the service members or veterans. Those

who have a personal connection, such as a family member who served, should add that information to the card. The cards should not be overtly religious, but messages such as “Merry Christmas” or “God Bless You” are acceptable. Inserts such as glitter, photos and business cards should not be included. Also, the cards should not include personal information such as telephone numbers or home or email addresses. However, the cards should be signed with the giver’s name. Family-owned Royer’s has 16 stores in Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties, including one Stephenson’s Flowers & Gifts location in Harrisburg.
