Through The Eyes Of A Child
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Master Trooper Kelly Osborne, community service/public information officer with Pennsylvania State Police Troop J - Lancaster, organized the first Shop With a Cop, the idea was to foster good relationships between children and local law enforcement officers. Now, as she prepares to hold the third such event, Osborne has witnessed the results of her efforts. “You see a difference from the time a child is dropped off by a parent or guardian in the morning, when they may be unsure or nervous, to when the parents pick them up,” she said, noting when the children prepare to go home, they are often laughing and hugging their assigned cop. “In those couple hours, the bond that is made between the officer and the child is amazing,” said Osborne.
The third Shop With a Cop will be held at Lafayette Fire Company on Saturday, Dec. 3. Osborne hopes to pair at least 30 children in the countywide program with volunteer state police troopers, officers from East Lampeter Township Police Department, and officers from the SPCA and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
Osborne is specifically looking to include children who have been the victim of a crime or involved in another unfortunate circumstance where police contact would benefit them. Those who wish to nominate a child for the program may visit http://campcadetof lancastercounty.com/shop-with -a-cop. Links to sponsor a child are located on that website as well. Nomination forms for children to participate must be completed by Wednesday, Nov. 30.
The elementary-age children and
officers whom Osborne has paired up will travel together to Kohl’s on Lincoln Highway to shop. Each child will receive a $150 gift card to Kohl’s, so students may shop for family members. Prepared with lists of possible gifts, the students and officers will shop and then returned to the station, where the officers will help wrap the
gifts. Each student will also receive a bag lunch before being picked up.
Osborne has also created a “Troop J Lancaster Shop With a Cop” Facebook page, where she posts photos, updates, and other information about the event. “I receive a lot of feedback from parents and grandparents in the form of emails or
Facebook messages,” she said, noting most of the correspondence expresses gratitude and shares that a child loved being part of the program. “It makes the kids feel empowered to provide gifts for their family members,” said Osborne. “You think it’s just for the children, but it benefits the whole family.”
A Successful Season

Saturday, Nov. 5, was a beautiful fall day in Manheim. The sun shone in the parking lot at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church on North Penryn Road, and the breeze brew subtly through the colored leaves. Inside, however, the fun was fierce and so was the competition. The 20 members of the Chuckie Magee flag football teams and half a dozen cheerleaders enjoyed the

Prior to 2020, residents at Fairmount volunteered at UNTO, a ministry based in Mount Joy, that works with “strategic global partnerships to relieve suffering through humanitarian aid in more than 75 countries.”
In June of this year, residents Elizabeth Bell, Arlene Shenk, and Irvie and Edith Leaman drove to UNTO to help with a special packing week. “We were so impressed with what we saw and experienced that we immediately got a date for Oct. 18 during their packing project week. UNTO holds those
weeks twice a year,” reported Bell. Bell and Shenk shared their experience at UNTO with others in their fiber arts group called Knitting Together. By August, Bell was asking wellness coordinator Nancy Silverstein to arrange for a group to visit UNTO in October. “I wasn’t able to register us until Sept. 1,” said Silverstein, who worked with fellow wellness coordinator Deyna Hrishka to put together the trip. Ultimately, more than 20 Fairmount residents boarded a bus on the morning of Oct. 18 and traveled to UNTO where they worked fairly steadily from 8:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on a variety of tasks. last game of the season. The league was created earlier this year for participants ages 21 to 40 with varying abilities and disabilities. The Cowboys in blue and the Eagles in green lined up for play after play.
When the Eagles scored, a volunteer played “Fly Eagles Fly” and members of the Eagles team began to sing. Cowboys coach Randy Samuels quickly approached a reporter on the sidelines, saying, “You need to put this in this article, so everyone reads it. This song they are playing now is officially banned from this league.” Laughter ensued, and Rita Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, which is the parent organization of the league,
said, “Randy is brutal. He is in everyone’s face. He is just so much fun, and everyone gives it right back to him.”
As Paskoff finished talking, Eagles team member JJ intercepted a football and ran the length of the gym for a touchdown. Cheers erupted. “That was great,” Paskoff told JJ. “Good for you!”
Following the final game, a banquet was held at the church. Awards, trophies, and medals were given out, and participants, parents, coaches and volunteers, including Randy’s wife, Doris, and Chuck and Bev Magee, parents of Chuckie, for whom the league is named, enjoyed pizza from Jersey Mike’s Subs and Rita’s Italian Ice. “The
church has been wonderful - so supportive and helpful,” said Paskoff, who added that sponsors who have contributed to expenses include Costanzo Wealth Management, 4 Cole’s KIDS, Bomberger’s, Executive Printing, and Lanco Federal Credit Union.
The league has been so successful, the group is talking about organizing a similar program around a different sport during the winter season from January to March, which will be followed in April by Challenge Baseball. “These (participants) are older than 21, so this was a nice way to segue into serving an older group, which is where we want to go,” explained
Paskoff.
Aaron’s Acres will be taking part in the ExtraGive 2022 online fundraising event to be held on Friday, Nov. 18. On that day, representatives of the organization will visit several county locations, including Grand Central Bagel from 7 to 10 a.m., Jersey Mike’s Subs at the Belmont Shoppes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Dale High Leadership Center from 3 to 6 p.m., and Tellus 360 from 2 to 7 p.m. Readers who wish to support the organization during the ExtraGive may visit www.extragive.org.
More information about Aaron’s Acres is available at www.aarons acres.org.
Lighthouse Vocational Services, 144 Orlan Road, New Holland, will hold an open house on Friday, Nov. 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. during the ExtraGive.
Attendees may explore the building, learn about Lighthouse’s programs and meet staff members. They may also visit the Able Creations stand for Christmas crafts made by the individuals at Lighthouse. The event will include games and door prizes, and Nano Grill Food Truck will serve chargrilled sliders and fresh-cut fries.
Founded in 1975 with Christian values and principles, Lighthouse Voca-
tional Services serves 200 adults with developmental disabilities by providing job training, work experience and programs that nurture creativity. Career-centered programs include the Vocational Training Program, where persons learn job skills and soft skills in a sheltered workshop, and Employment Services, where participants work at local businesses and gain job skills. The day program includes creative skills such as music and painting and practical skills like cooking and baking. Individuals also discover new skills in the 16 online classes such as
joyful movement, book clubs, social clubs, art, music, baking and gardening. Individuals may engage with the community and volunteer at local nonprofits. Lighthouse is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

Sandra Leonard knotted comforters along with two other women from Fairmount, while her husband, Keith, put together bracelets that were headed to South America. “The comforters will be shipped to wherever they are needed outside the United States,” said Sandra, who noted that she had an opportunity to sew on a machine as well.
Edith Lorah created bracelets and also filled schoolbags with a notebook, stickers, a ruler, crayons, pencils, pens, and erasers. “It was like an assembly line,” said Lorah, who noted that several children were helping to fill the schoolbags as well, including one toddler who sat on the floor scooping toothbrushes into a box for pickup. The schoolbags make it possible for children in certain countries to attend school where they are required to have the items in the bags.
Sally and Gordon Landis worked together on the wordless bracelets that use different colored beads to tell the Gospel story. “We did that for four hours, but it didn’t seem like it,” said Sally. “There are people across from you and beside you, and there’s a lot of good conversa-
tion.” Gordon added that it takes about two minutes to complete one bracelet.
Silverstein also took items made by residents to donate. “We have a number of people who work on their own making bags with handles, dresses, caps, blankets, scarves,” she said. Bell’s group sent along 36 hats. The group has donated more than 600 hats over the last few years.
“At the end of the session, they had (completed) 1,500 pallets of school packages, and they were ready to be shipped,” said Lorah. “We gathered around the pallets and had prayer and that was very moving.”
Bell was happy to see how successful the trip was. “Little did I realize that there would be this many people,” she said. “All glory to the Lord.”

Church Plans Organ Dedication Concert
First Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, will host a concert of famous organ pieces on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 3 p.m. Held in the main sanctuary, the event will feature Peter Stoltzfus Berton, a recitalist from Rhode Island.
The purpose of the program is to dedicate the church’s new organ, a three-manual Allen instrument with the latest in computer sampling technology. The organ is actually five organs in one, emulating instruments from Philadelphia as well as several famous European organs. All of the available sounds of the organ will be utilized by Berton.
The program will include works by Bach, Elgar, Franck and Vierne, along with well-known hymn tunes and patriotic numbers. The music was chosen to highlight the breadth of tonal color and flexibility of the instrument.
Berton is the organist and choirmaster at Zabriskie Memorial Church of St. John the Evangelist,
Newport, R.I., and the founding executive director of The Choir School of Newport County. He holds degrees from the University of Michigan School of Music and the Yale University School of Music. He is a published composer and has released several CDs.
Light refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall following the concert. The event is free and open to the public.
Chorale Plans Free Concert

The concert is free and open to the

Milestone Moments
BY ANN MEAD ASH
On Nov. 5, more than 50 family members and friends of Clarence Stoner gathered in the Farm Crest Community Room at Fairmount in Ephrata to celebrate Clarence’s 100th birthday with refreshments and cake.
Rep. Keith Greiner joined in the festivities, presenting Clarence with a citation from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania House of Representatives, which read in part, “Born in
Ephrata on Nov. 9, 1922, Mr. Stoner has demonstrated the highest ideals of citizenship throughout the years and truly deserves special recognition. To his great credit, he operated his own dairy farm. Previously married to the late Martha May Good Stoner, Mr. Stoner then shared many years of marriage with Irene Martin Stoner prior to her passing. He is the proud father of nine children and also has been blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and
one great-great-grandchild.”
As part of the celebration, Clarence posed with descendants who were each consecutively 25 years younger. These were his daughter Marlene Bomgardner, age 75; her son Jeff Bomgardner, age 50; Jeff’s daughter Emily Moyer, age 25; and her son, Maverick Moyer, age four months.
