Lancaster Catholic High School students will perform “The Tragedy of Macbeth” live for family members and online for community members.

More murder and tyranny ensue until the mayhem is stopped by the combined forces of Scotland and England. Jacob Fertal will play Banquo, Sarah Scott will play Malcolm, and Zac Snyder will play Macduff. Stage managers are Dylan Saez and Lyla Hall. Wagner noted that she chose a tragedy because the school has performed several comedies, but she found that the play lends itself to COVID-19 restrictions, such as social distancing, and the set is minimal. The play will be set in the apocalypse of the future with gothic grunge costuming. “The language is challenging,” said Wagner, who wants to be sure the students understand what they are saying and use the correct pronunciation. She said the students are familiar with the characters because Shakespeare is part of the LCHS

junior year curriculum. It is important to Wagner that the students convey their understanding to audience members. “I want audiences to feel engaged in what we’re doing and to … get a sense of the language and the story because the students are so into their characters and understand the language so well,” she said. Wagner has noticed that the students are especially grateful for the opportunity to perform. “The kids are having fun,” she said. “They seem much more appreciative of the chance to rehearse together in person, do a Shakespeare play, perform in front of a small audience, record it, and send it out,” Wagner added, noting that participants are looking forward to having family from out of town view the show via the link. “They are excited about everything in a more meaningful way,” she said.

racy Wagner, director of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) fall production of Shakespeare’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” had numerous reasons for choosing the classic tale of good and evil as the school’s fall play. First, because it is not copyrighted, it can be recorded and livestreamed. But perhaps just as importantly, she had a ready and willing cast. “I have a core group of students who are into Shakespeare,” she said. “They are strong actors, and we have talked about Shakespeare and how much they love Shakespeare.” Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the audience for the show will be limited to family and friends of the 22-member cast and four-member crew. “We will have (the production)

professionally recorded and edited,” said Wagner, who explained that the recording will then be streamed via a link. Those wishing to watch the digital version may visit www.lchsyes.org to obtain the link, which will be available for a fee. Readers who have questions may email tbrill@lchsyes.org or call 717-509-0310. The story of Macbeth, a Scottish general, played by Xavier LeFevre, and his wife, Lady Macbeth, played by Maddi Lewis, is one of prophecy and treachery. Macbeth is under the rule of King Duncan, played by Freddy Arnold, when he is told by three witches, played by Caroline Erb, Sheridan Riva, and Annalise Kauffman, that he will become the king of Scotland in Duncan’s place. The prediction inspires Macbeth, with encouragement from his wife, to murder Duncan and take his throne.

In a year when nonprofit organizations experienced significant losses of income opportunities, the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive) hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) is of particular importance. For 24 hours, beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org. To inspire generous donations, LCCF has solicited sponsors for more than $500,000 in matching funds and other prizes. “Every year we have a stretch goal. That allows people to ‘give extra,’” explained LCCF communications manager Aaron Spangler.

SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time) is a free one-hour after-school music program provided to School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. The organization currently offers music lessons through 12 SDoL schools and at the Youth Intervention Center (YIC). SWAN is a nonprofit organization specifically serving children affected by parental incarceration. SWAN founder and executive director Diana Vuolo noted that the program benefits the students in several ways. “Music is not only fun but research underscores it as one of the finest disciplines to help a child succeed,” she said. When COVID-19 restrictions were put in place in March, SWAN classes ended, and spring concerts were canceled. “The music stopped,” said Vuolo, adding that lessons can only resume when it is deemed safe for teachers to return. Hoping to provide a musical outlet for students until in-person classes could be held, SWAN quickly created

instructional videos that were posted on YouTube and provided to SDoL for students to access, but Vuolo reported SWAN was not happy with the results. “We did not see them interacting with those videos,” she recalled. To engage students in lessons again, SWAN began enrolling students for individual lessons on Zoom. “That’s when we discovered how few actually had access to the internet and devices,” said Vuolo. Still determined to reach more children, SWAN teachers began working with the small percentage of children who could be reached via Zoom, expanding to offer violin, keyboard, and guitar online. “The lessons went beautifully,” reported Vuolo. “The students really enjoyed having interaction with their teachers and were able to learn quickly.” In August, when SDoL opted to open school in an online format, SWAN learned that the district would allow SWAN students to use the schoolprovided internet devices with a link to Zoom to connect. “More children could receive music lessons again,” said Vuolo, who added that each week the organization has worked to expand student enrollment. “We still have a way to go before every child can have weekly lessons,” said Vuolo recently. As SWAN program director, Brooke Beazley monitors each private Zoom lesson. “I see how beneficial the Zoom lessons have been,” said Beazley. “Every student is making progress and improving their ability to focus, listen, and communicate. They are developing patience as they learn to play their instruments, and they have been practicing

The hope is that the 2020 ExtraGive will do as well or better. Spangler noted that when the shutdown was announced in March, the ExtraGive organizers knew that this year’s event would be different. “We were a little unsure about how everything was going to go, Spangler commented, “but we have more sponsors this year than ever before. More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. Meadow View - A Team Approach To Normalcy BY ANN MEAD ASH

Melody Karick, the program director for Meadow View, Garden Spot Village’s (GSV) new memory support facility located on South Kinzer Avenue in New Holland, sees the new 40,000square-foot building, which includes two mirror-image sections named Amber and Pearl, as a mini version of GSV. “People live here as a community,” said Karick, gesturing to the Town Square area of the building, which includes a general store, cosmetology shop, bistro, and chapel. “They visit each other.” Karick noted that only the front door and the gates to the five outdoor courtyards are locked. Within the walls, residents may move about freely. The design is focused on

allowing those with dementia to continue to live with normalcy. “Dementia is not a disease that needs to take normalcy (from patients),” Karick said. “It’s not the end of life. We just need to help them learn to live a new life with new purpose.” A training room located off Town Square will serve as a meeting place for clubs led by residents. Pointing out the donated items in the general store, Karick noted, “Shopping is a normal part of life.” She added that donated items in the store may be chosen by residents at no charge. To help residents become familiar with their surroundings, the building has been designed with cues they can follow. “There are two gray doors with no trim,” pointed out

Karick. “Those doors are for team members.” A door between the two gray doors has trim and color because it is a restroom for all to use. In a neighborhood including five resident apartments, each door is a different color and has a different number of panels and a different door handle. Each also has a mailbox with the resident’s name.”We are giving several cues to what is their household and room,” explained Karick. Resident comfort and safety were paramount in the plan for the building and the care of its occupants. “When a resident gets out of bed, sensors will automatically turn on the bathroom light,” said Karick, who noted that when a resident returns to bed, the lights will dim and go off. Wristbands worn by residents will notify care team members when a resident who normally needs assistance is out of bed. “If a patient falls, the band will alert the team member to the fall and the location,” said Karick, who added that a dashboard system allows team members to locate

a patient and make sure he or she is safe. Smoke-safe areas located within the building can keep residents and staff safe should a fire occur. To help married couples remain together, Meadow View offers a few special independent living apartments attached to a resident’s room. “Everything in the apartment is dementia friendly,” said Karick, who explained a two-step process for

using the stove or fireplace. The outside entrance must be activated with a code or key swipe to protect the spouse with dementia from wandering off. Should the independent spouse need to be away, the door to the apartment can be locked while the patient continues to be cared for by the Meadow View team. According to Karick, the creation of Meadow View, which

welcomed residents in midSeptember, was based on recognizing the need for memory support services. GSV leaders Steve Lindsey and Scott Miller invited her to bring her memory care team into the process of developing the new facility. “It was a great team effort,” Karick said. Readers who wish to learn more about Meadow View may call 717-355-6000.

PENNYSAVER Roast Turkey Breaded Angus Breast Thick Sliced Beef Steaks

BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

“We’ve seen a lot of new faces. Our numbers have gone up about 20%, Water Street Mission (WSM) president Jack Crowley said, speaking about the increase in people the organization has provided with food assistance this year. “Hunger-Free Lancaster is seeing that the numbers are going up across the community. Churches are stepping up to make sure those (organizations that) are here yearround aren’t getting overwhelmed. Even with the additional help from community food pantries, WSM serves 400 meals a day in its dining hall and provides boxes of groceries to about 600 households every week. Crowley said he anticipates distributing more than 1,000 boxes for Thanksgiving and wants to ensure each one includes a turkey. WSM will not offer Christmas boxes, Crowley noted, as Lancaster County Project for the Needy has taken on that service. WSM is a part of HungerFree Lancaster as well as LanCo MyHome, the Lancaster County Homeless Coalition. More than 70 organizations are involved in serving poor and homeless individuals and families in Lancaster County. Three meals a day, seven days a week are available free of charge in Lancaster city, Crowley said. That enables WSM to focus on serving its long-term residents, those who stay in the emergency shelter, and those who participate in the outreach program.

Water Street Ministries employees welcome donations of nonperishable food.

“We can have more than 200 people staying with us,â€? Crowley said. WSM had opened Providence Shelter this past winter, expanding WSM’s emergency housing capacity. The facility has a top-of-the-line air filtration system like those used in hospitals. It was installed because it works with the HVAC system to remove odors and promote the general health of occupants. It turns out that it is also what is recommended for COVID19 control. Additionally, single beds rather than bunk beds were purchased to honor the dignity of guests. The beds can be spread out for social distancing. “We’ve experienced God’s providence in some of the design features,â€? Crowley commented. “We’ve been able to serve everybody that’s needed us so far. ‌ We will find creative ways to address (greater needs).â€? To ensure that WSM is ready to feed its guests and clients this winter, WSM

launched its annual Rescue Mission Food Drive (RMFD) on Nov. 1. The organization will make a special effort to collect 120,000 pounds of nonperishable food items by Sunday, Dec. 20. A list of suggested items has been posted at http://rescuemissionfood drive.org/. Glass containers are discouraged. Donations may be dropped off at Boscov’s at Park City, Javateas, the Lancaster city locations of Murray Insurance, and the Lancaster County locations of Sheetz, Weis Markets, AAA Central Penn, and M&T Bank. Large quantities may be delivered to the WSM food dock, 210 S. Prince St., Lancaster, on Mondays and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Financial contributions may be made at https://wsm.org/make-an -impact/donate. CV Football Wins 4th Straight, Tops PM

BY LEAH SINTIC

With a 30-14 victory, CV football continues to tear their way through their schedule, making Penn Manor their first November conquest, as well as fourth consecutive win on

Friday the sixth. Each of the four quarters in the home contest featured a Buckskin touchdown, building a sizeable 23-0 lead before the final period in which the Comets managed to register their 14 points in a too-little-too-

late comeback attempt. Kaden Martin came up big for the Bucks, delivering CV’s first touchdown on a five-yard run in the first quarter, and pouncing on a Comet fumble followed by a 48-yard dash to the end zone in the third.

Nick Tran also produced a substantial amount of the Bucks’ 199 total rushing yards, most notably his 61-yard sprint to the end zone in the fourth. Zach Fisher supplied four receptions (82 yards) including a 19-yard

TD pass in the second from quarterback Macoy Kneisley, who threw 10 completions for 139 yards. CV’s stifling defense forced three Comet turnovers in the triumph.

Scouts Retire American Flags

Area News Anchor Sets Retirement

Members of Cub Scout Pack 82 and Boy Scout Troop 83 held an American flag retirement ceremony on Sept. 19 at the West Earl Lions Club Park in Talmage. The Scout groups usually hold an annual flag retirement ceremony in observation of National Flag Day, June 14, but this year they opted to postpone the ceremony to align with COVID-19 regulations. The Scouts took part in a campout the night before the ceremony, but the main event of the weekend was the flag retirement ceremony. Josiah Hoover of Troop 83

WGAL 8 announced recently that longtime anchor Ron Martin will retire on Wednesday, Nov. 25, after more than 37 years with the news station. Martin has been a member of the WGAL News 8 team since 1983. He rose through the ranks to become the station’s main weeknight news anchor in 2000. Martin currently anchors WGAL News 8 at 5 p.m., the Emmy awardwinning WGAL News 8 at 6 p.m., and WGAL News 8 at 11 p.m. Martin led WGAL’s coverage of some of the biggest stories in the station’s history, including the Hanover race riots, the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and, most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. This November, WGAL News 8 will look back at the most memorable moments

Members of Boy Scout Troop 83 and Cub Scout Troop 82 held an American flag retirement ceremony on Sept. 19. Participants included (front, from left) Dan Dennis, Cubmaster for Pack 82; Riley Mull; Josiah Hoover; Xzavier Pringle; Tayler Dennis; and (back) Michael Hoover.

served as master of ceremonies. Cub Scouts Riley Mull of the Bear Den, Tayler Dennis of the Wolf Den and Xzavier Pringle of the Webelos served as the honor/color guard. In preparation for taking on this role, they learned why Old Glory is important, how to respect the flag, and how to properly dispose of it when the time is right. They learned that, according Josiah Hoover (far left) to the U.S. Flag Code, served as master of ceremonies, and (continuing from when American flags are torn, tattered, discolleft) Zav Pringle, Riley Mull, ored, old, or otherwise in and Tayler Dennis served as need of replacement, it the honor guard.

is best to retire them in a dignified manner, preferably by burning. Members, leaders, and families from both groups also participated in this ceremonial event. For more information on Scouting, readers may contact the Pennsylvania Dutch Council at 717-394-4063 or visit https://beascout.scouting.org/ to find a Boy Scouts of America group in their area. Groups that often accept donations of American flags for retirement include Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Lions Clubs, American Legion groups, and local government entities.

from Martin’s career at the station. These news stories will air during the news at 5 p.m. The celebration will culminate with Martin’s final broadcast on Nov. 25. “WGAL was my dream job and I’ve enjoyed every one of the 37 years I’ve been here,” said Martin, “but as an anchorman, you work a lot of nights and now it’s time for me to spend more time with my family.” Martin is a York native who began his career in broadcast journalism as a desk assistant at NBC News in Washington, D.C. After graduating from Howard University with a Bachelor of Arts in communications, he returned home to the Susquehanna Valley to work as a reporter and news announcer at

WSBA radio in York. Martin joined WGAL 8 and the NewsCenter 8 team in 1983. In 1985, he was named weekend news anchor. Two years later, Martin was named a weeknight news anchor on WGAL. Among the many awards he has received during his career in broadcast journalism, Martin is a six-time Emmy award winner. He has also been honored for his many community service contributions in the central Pennsylvania region. His efforts in this area have been recognized by scores of organizations, including the state of Pennsylvania, the cities of York and Harrisburg, the Harrisburg and York chapters of the NAACP, the school districts of York and Harrisburg, and the Lancaster Urban League.

These winning programs, which will receive $50,000 each, deliver associate degrees and other credentials in advanced manufacturing, energy, health care, and information technology. A selection committee of field experts selected the winners for not only providing outstanding career preparation but also for intentionally reaching out to and supporting diverse populations that typically are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers, including students of color, low-income students, and females. As part of the award, the winning programs, in partnership with the Aspen Institute, have selected 44 outstanding students as Siemens Technical Scholars. They will each receive a scholarship of $3,500 to $10,000 to continue their education or pay student loan debt. These diverse scholars will share their stories to demonstrate the economic and personal opportunities available through STEM careers. The winning programs’ innovative strategies are profiled at https://highered.aspeninstitute.org/ siemens-aspen-stem/.
