Zion Lutheran Bazaar To Return BY ANN MEAD ASH

Last year, organizers of the Holiday Craft Show at Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola, canceled the event because of COVID-19 restrictions. This year, the event will be held with a few modifications. “We are having crafts, a bake sale, the cookie walk,” said organizer Patty Williams, who noted that up to 20 vendors may be at this year’s show. The 2021 Holiday Craft Show will be held at the church on Saturday, Dec. 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees at the show See Zion Lutheran pg 6

said Laurelyn, who noted that up to 16 shoeboxes can be packed in a single carton. On Nov. 15, which was the first day of receiving boxes, the group had received about 1,500. “Someone dropped nearly 1,000,” pointed

“There can’t be any liquids or toy weapons in them,” she explained, noting that the processors in Baltimore make sure everything in the OCC boxes is appropriate with a goal of changing as little as possible. “They try not to change anything because they really want to preserve the integrity of the gift,” she said. “They try to keep the gift intact as it’s been packed.” Hannah and Bethany have both traveled to Baltimore to help with the processing. “We go down to process for a day,” said Hannah, who explained that they usually arrive at 7 a.m. and leave around 5 p.m. Bethany added that shifts may range from three hours to eight hours, so volunteers can choose how long they want to serve. The Schrom family has been involved with the OCC

tion center as well as a dropoff point where other churches can bring their collected boxes to be processed. “This year four churches feed to us,” said Laurelyn, who said that Wrightsdale Baptist Church in Peach Bottom, Petra Church in New Holland, Community Bible Church in Marietta, and Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church in Quarryville were all bringing shoeboxes to New Life to be packed. The Schroms have tracked OCC shoeboxes they packed to faraway places such as the Ukraine, Panama, Colombia, and Zimbabwe. “We tracked ours just for fun,” said Laurelyn, who noted that this year’s worldwide shoebox distribution goal is 9.7 million. Change. This word, for some people, carries a negative connotation. For others, change is something positive. In most cases, change is inevitable. For instance, babies grow into toddlers, they go off to school, and they become more immersed in the journey called life. The transition from being at home 24/7 to attending school can be challenging for kids, which is why Lampeter-Strasburg School District (LSSD) recently implemented a new prekindergarten program through a collaboration with the Owl Hill Learning Center. At Lampeter Elementary School, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster, the Pre-K Counts program provides half-day prekindergarten to eligible 3and 4-year-olds. The program is designed for children who are at risk of school failure and are living in families earning up to 300% of the federal income poverty level, such as The Pre-K Counts program at Lampeter Elementary School a family of four earning provides half-day prekindergarten to eligible 3- and 4$72,900, who may also be year-olds. The cookie walk, which has long been a tradition, will be altered so that volunteers collect cookies as directed by the customer. “Customers will choose the cookies, and we will fill the box,” said Williams, who noted that the cookie walk will begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue until the cookies are sold out. A cookie decorating area and a special shopping area for children will also be offered. Vendors and church members will provide donated items for door prizes. Williams noted that door prize winners will be chosen every half hour and that Santa Clauses and snowmen will be among the prizes. A few food items will be available for purchase at the show on a takeout-only basis. Williams said that vegetable soup and white chicken chili will both be sold. The 2019 craft show raised about $2,500, which was donated to local organizations such as Lutheran Disaster Relief. Williams said this year Lutheran Disaster Relief has again been chosen to receive the funds. Readers who would like to know more about the event may visit www.zionleola.org or call 717-656-9200.

Veritas Plans Madrigal Feast The students of Veritas Academy, a classical Christian school in Leola, invite the Lancaster community to a royal medieval banquet and masque performance. The Veritas Academy Madrigal Feast will be held on Friday, Dec. 3, at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 4, at noon and 6:30 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 321 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster. This biennial school tradition is presented by the secondary school student theater, for students in seventh through 12th grades. This event will usher guests into the royal hall of the king and queen and their lords, ladies, knights, and more, where they will enjoy a hearty three-course banquet catered by Hess’s Barbecue and a performance presented by the jester and her troupe of actors.

Throughout the event, guests will interact with traveling musicians, medieval merchants, monks, peasants, and nobility in an immersive medieval experience, which is peppered with Christmas cheer and music. In keeping with tradition, the diners will become an audience to a comedic masque performance. This event’s production of “A Midwinter’s Dream Knight” is a mixed-up fairy tale, featuring stories and characters from Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel. Seating is limited, and tickets are required. To purchase tickets, visit www.veritasacad Ruthie Reeser (left) and emy.com/madrigal. Separate Mark Spead costs have been set for adults and for children age 12 and under. For more information, contact Veritas Academy at 717-556-0690.
