Cookies And Greens And Christmas

Barb Dagen first met Tabitha Shilalo several years ago through Dagen’s work. As the two women got to know each other, Dagen became interested in helping Shilalo with her LuoPad Pack Project ministry, which provides feminine pads for women and girls in developing countries. Shilalo is connected to UNTO, a ministry based in Mount Joy, that works with “strategic global partnerships to relieve suffering through humanitarian aid in more than 75 countries,” according to the organization’s website.

Currently, Dagen volunteers at UNTO each Thursday sewing the pads, which are made of flannel and terry cloth, but on Saturday, Dec. 10, Dagen will hold a fundraiser for the ministry just in time for the holidays. “It will be a bit of whatever with the emphasis on cookies and greens,” said Dagen, known for the delightful and delicious things she

makes with lavender, herbs, and other natural items. The cookies and greens benefit sale will be held in a rustic barn at 80 Hellers Church Road, Leola, on Dec. 10 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A variety of Christmas cookies will be sold by the dozen and halfdozen, and Dagen will include some

of her cookies made with rosemary or lavender.

Evergreens will include winterberry and other live greens done in swags or sold loose, along with some faux greenery.

Wreaths and other decorations will be created both for Christmas and for year-round use. Dagen has brought together pinecones,

hydrangea, and other natural items to make decorative baskets and other pieces with seasonal flair. Sachets, vinegars, and lavender mist will be displayed for sale, and gift baskets, snowmen, and more holiday-themed treasures will be sold.

Shilalo has traveled to Kenya, Tanzania, and other countries to hold women’s health clinics. She teaches and shares the love of Christ, and she hands out Luopacks. “Luo” means to set free. Each pack includes two pairs of underwear, a washcloth, six pads, and instructions on how to use the pads. “The girls (Shilalo works with) may miss 20% of school if they don’t have (LuoPads) to wear to attend,” explained Dagen.

More information about the ministry may be found at https://unto.com. Readers with specific questions may email Tabitha.shilalo@unto.com.

The Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) held a Veterans Day breakfast in the Veteran’s Hall of the War Memorial Building, 54 W. Main St., Leola, on Nov. 11, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

About 50 veterans, spouses, and guests took part in the observance, which was opened by Rep. Keith Greiner, who served as master of ceremonies, and pastor Bruce Tully

In 2020, Lisa Kalinowski, founder of CoJoMotion Dance Company of the Lititz Academy of Dance, scheduled “A Season for Wishes” as a virtual performance at Penn Cinema. Last year, the show was back live at Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS). This year, Kalinowski would like to see the LMS Fine Arts Center packed. “It’s just one performance, so I am hoping we can play to a full house,” said Kalinowski.

About 40 dancers will take part in the 18th annual “A Season for Wishes” presentation, which will be See Season For Wishes pg 12

of Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Hellers, who offered the opening prayer. The national anthem was played, and the group said the Pledge of Allegiance, after which the hymns of the various military branches were played. Veterans were encouraged to rise when they heard the hymn of the branch in which they had served.

Speakers, in addition to Greiner, were Jean Summers and Amy Roth Sandrolini. Greiner commented on the War Memorial Building as the center of the community, pointing out that community members have a civic responsibility to “never forget the sacrifices that each (veteran) has made on our country’s behalf.” “The support of your community sends a clear signal that America stands united behind all five branches of our armed forces every day,” he said, adding that the service of local veterans teaches lessons to the coming generations. “(Those) lessons (are) to appreciate the blessings of our freedom, recognize the power and virtue of sacrifice, and respect those who gave everything on behalf of our common good,” said Greiner.

Summers is director of the Patriotic Stitchers, an organization that is affiliated with ULTWMA. According to Summers, more than 50 active volunteers have made and distributed 1,300 blankets to veterans in the last three

years. Because the organization is fully funded by donations, stitchers receive the necessary materials to create the blankets. “We are grateful for support so we can continue to provide this service,” said Summers, who, along with Darla Carpenter, presented a blanket Carpenter made to be displayed in Veteran’s Hall to ULTWMA.

Summers introduced Sandrolini, an Emmy award-winning journalist and hospice worker with Promedica. Sandrolini shared her story with the gathering, pointing out that she comes from a family where many members have served their country in the military. She noted the thread of commitment to love of country. “That love transcends divisions,” she stated, adding that on Veterans Day,

“the entire citizenry joins hands in a common purpose.” Sandrolini went on to tell her story, including the service of her husband as a diplomat, her own work as a journalist, and their shared values and love of democracy.

She described the experience of losing her sister to a devastating stroke and how that led her to hospice work.

Sandrolini concluded by reminding veterans of the importance of their

service. “What you did mattered then, now, and for future generations,” she said. “You served as role models and inspiration in a country that desperately needs (those).”

Before taps was played, Tully offered the closing prayer, saying, “May you leave this place proud of what you’ve done, who you’ve become, and yet humbled by the goodness of God.”

Piercing Word Sets Christmas Production

Piercing Word’s Christmas production, “The Advent of Christmas,” will tour across Lancaster County and beyond throughout the holiday season.

Inspired by the traditional themes of Advent, “The Advent of Christmas” celebrates the hope, faith, joy, peace, and love found in Christ. This production includes the traditional Christmas narrative from Luke 1 and 2 and other passages that highlight the

birth of Christ and why His arrival matters. The show debuted last year.

Piercing Word performs Scripture in dramatic and musical presentations, word-for-word from the ESV Bible. The nonprofit, 501(c)(3), Christian ministry is based in Lancaster and has been performing Scripture across the country since 2007. It also offers Bible memorization resources.

The mission of Piercing Word is to

ignite passion for the Word of God in the heart of the church.

For performances dates and

locations of “The Advent of Christmas,” visit https://piercingword .org/events or call 888-244-3461.

MCCL Sets Christmas Concert Series

The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) has announced its 2022 Christmas concert series.

Concerts will take place on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. at Historic St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 119 S. Prince St., Lancaster; Sunday, Dec. 4, at 4 p.m. at Neffsville Mennonite Church, 2371 Lititz Pike, Lancaster; and Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. at Highland Presbyterian Church, 1801 Oregon Pike, Lancaster.

Guests will experience the retelling of the birth of Jesus through song and Scripture. Several selections from Handel’s “Messiah,” including a congregational sing-along of the “Hallelujah” chorus, will be interspersed throughout a varied program of familiar favorites, multicultural songs, and bluegrassinfused selections from Tim Sharp’s Angel Band. Singers will share music in many languages, which they learned and practiced with native Spanish, French, Ukrainian, and S’gaw Karen

speakers. Violin, banjo, guitar, bass, and percussion will round out the program.

MCCL’s mission is to train children and youths to glorify Jesus Christ through excellent choral singing. The 110-voice choir includes the Carol Choir for children in second through fifth grades, Concert Choir for sixththrough eighth-graders, and Chamber Choir for students in ninth through 12th grades led by artistic director Rosemary Siegrist Blessing with directors Sarah Wingard and Galen Kauffman. MCCL is a community children’s choir program of Lancaster Mennonite School serving children and youths from Lancaster, Chester, York, and Berks counties.

Season For Wishes

held on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 6 p.m. at LMS, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Doors will open at 5 p.m. This traditional holiday show benefits Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley.

Along with a variety of musical numbers performed by members of the CoJoMotion Dance Company, the show will feature local singers Cathy Cruz, Tia Wells, Lisa McCoy, Kate Caplan, Amy Fennimore, Rachel Kalinowski, and Michelle McGovern. Prizes, giveaways, and opportunities to donate will be part of the event.

Styles for about 30 numbers will range from tap, jazz, and ballet to modern, lyrical, and musical theater. Rockette-style pieces will include “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Cool Yule,” “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” and “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers.”

Pieces inspired by “The Nutcracker” will include “Waltz of the Flowers” and

“Arabian Dance.” Lyrical pieces will be set to carols such as “O Holy Night” and “Do You Hear What I Hear?” and fun dances will be performed to wellknown tunes of the season, such as “Santa Baby,” “My Only Wish (This Year),” and music from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

Past shows have raised more than $30,000 each. Over the nearly two decades that the benefit has been held, the group has raised more than $420,000. Kalinowski is hoping to raise at least $30,000 this year to breach the $450,000 milestone.

More information may be found by searching Facebook for “CoJoMotion Dance Company” or “Lititz Academy of Dance.” Readers who have questions may email Cojo_Wishes@Lititz AcademyofDance.com. Tickets, which are necessary to attend, may be purchased at www.lancastermennonite .org/event-info-ticket-sales.

Holiday Meal Delivery Set

The 36th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 17.

Once again, the holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only; there will be no pickup location.

Families must preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855-567-5341 by Friday, Dec. 9.A

volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants on the morning of Dec. 17.

The project anticipates distributing approximately 3,000 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to lowincome families across Lancaster County throughout the holiday season. The main supporters of this year’s distribution are UPMC Pinnacle Health Plan, GFL Environmental Inc., Matthew 25, Stroehmann Bakeries, Giant Foods, Pepperidge Farms, Four Seasons Produce, Keener Potatoes, and Packaging Corporation of America.

In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, LCPN will also continue its partnerships with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, The Factory Ministries, Mission Food Pantry, Ephrata Area Social Services, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas.

LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. LCPN relies on individual donations for over two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. Monetary donations can be made online at www.lcpn.org. For information on donating by mail, call Tom Fasnacht at 717-569-8521. LCPN is a nonprofit group relying solely on public donations and volunteers.
