“This is the second year in a row we have a brand-new scene,” said Adam Fox, summer camp director at Woodcrest Retreat. Last year, Journey to Bethlehem organizers added a final scene featuring the wise men. It was so well received that another change was made for 2021.

Partnering to feed the homeless are (from left) Sandra Jones, Paul Zenone, Mike Cherasaro, and Heather Cherasaro.
Sandra Jones and Paul Zenone’s first date in May of 2019 was a little unusual. “Our first date was a community meal,” recalled Zenone. The second date was even more unusual. “Our second date was a hike where we saw people living in homeless camps and under bridges,” he noted. From that beginning, Jones and Zenone have created Providing Hope, an organization that provides clothing and food to the homeless in the Reading area on a weekly basis, with the help of about 20 volunteers. “In basic training, we were taught it’s not about you; it’s about something larger than you. It’s about the United States of America,” Lehman told the gathering. “(It’s about) the ideals this country stands for. It’s about protecting everybody in this country.” Lehman went on to note that he believes that perspective could be helpful in making a way forward to move closer to building a more perfect union. Lehman was introduced by Pennsylvania District 43 Rep. Keith Greiner, who opened the event and thanked ULTWMA board member Robert Zook for organizing the breakfast. “When you think of Veterans Day, (you think of) times of darkness and danger when our American soldiers and veterans have stood ready to serve,” Greiner said. He spoke about the origins of Veterans Day at the end of World War I in 1919 and how it has come to be a day “we honor veterans of all wars and those who have served in times of peace.”

In 2012, mason John Diener began work on a project that would eventually fill the front yard of his home off Red Well Road near the boundary of ELANCO and Pequea Valley school districts. Several months after his death in March of 2021, the tiny village, including a covered bridge he created on a scale of 1 foot to 1 inch would be moved to Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown, to bring delight to the visitors there possibly for generations to come. “He started the Mascot Mill in 2012, and he finished in 2013,” said Steve Diener, John’s brother, who explained that John’s first passion was to re-create the house, the barn, and the mill from Mascot, a small village located southeast of Leola. The trio was especially recog-
nizable because of the bright yellow barn with green trim. “Everything was handmade down to the windows,” shared Steve. “(John) cut the wood shingles by hand.” Steve added that the insides of the houses are “amazing” as well. “He had wallpaper on the walls and pictures,” said Steve, who explained that John prepared the framework and interior of the buildings in his shop. John’s wife, Heather, added that her husband used a cart to wheel them outside, where Steve said the stone was laid. Steve also noted that the houses were set on strong foundations, making it easy to move them to their new location in Elizabethtown. Heather recalled her husband cutting photos from magazines to make the pictures inside the buildings and using a photo of Nelson Coblentz of Gospel Express Evangelistic Team
Ministry Inc. in one of them. Heather noted that it took John about a year to finish each building and that she often helped him with the village and also with birdhouses and feeders they would create to enter in the New Holland Fair competitions. One building in the group familiar to Pequea Valley-area residents is a replica of the Zimmerman store in Intercourse. Steve noted that 20,000 bricks were used to create the building and that John laid them with tweezers one brick at a time. “(John) was very creative and very meticulous in his work,” said Steve. Heather said that the final building John was working on is still in his workshop. “The last thing he made was a pavilion that he didn’t finish,” she said. “It had a fireplace and chimney that worked.” John and Steve’s brother Lloyd Diener felt that it would be nice if

Saturdays, Dec. 11 and 18, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. The live Nativity is interactive in that adults and children who attend may participate in specific scenes. As they travel with the characters from the Bible, participants will witness the walk to Bethlehem, where they will experience the disappointment of finding there is no room at the inn. The journey will also take attendees to a marketplace, where they may spend a shekel to purchase raisins or crackers, and then to a field, where they will gather with shepherds to hear the angels announce Christ’s birth. Finally, visitors will arrive at a stable to see the Christ child in the manger. The final stop is now a live presentation that takes place in the palace of one of the wise men. Fox noted that about 3,000 people attended the 2020 event. Because Journey to Bethlehem is held mostly outside and participants

“At the beginning of the show, Mary has learned she is pregnant, and she is wrestling with that and the social consequences of that,” said Fox of the new scene. He explained Joseph and Mary will be together and discuss the ramifications of Mary’s role as an unwed mother in first-century Palestine. “We want the audience to feel the emotions that Mary and Joseph would have felt,” said Fox. Now in its 11th year, Journey to Bethlehem differs from other live Nativity presentations because participants are given the opportunity to become part of the Christmas story as they follow Mary and Joseph from the time they receive the news that Mary will give birth to the Christ child to the arrival at the stable where Christ was born and beyond. The 2021 event will be held at the retreat center, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Fridays, Dec. 10 and 17, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and on

Rockette-style kicklines will be part of the live “A Season for Wishes” presentation.
Lisa Kalinowski, founder of CoJoMotion Dance Company of the Lititz Academy of Dance and the organizer of “A Season for Wishes,” is thrilled to be able to hold a live event this year. “What a blessing!” exclaimed Kalinowski. “This is always so joyous, and we are always so grateful for this opportunity.” The 2020 event was held virtually at Penn Cinema. “After everything that has happened in our world since our last live performance in 2019, there is a whole huge extra layer of gratitude this year,” noted Kalinowski. More than 40 dancers will take part in the 17th annual “A Season for Wishes” presentation, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11, at 6 p.m. at Lancaster Mennonite High School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Doors will open at 5 p.m. This traditional holiday show benefits Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley. Along with a variety of musical numbers performed by members of the CoJoMotion Dance Company, the show will feature local singers and instrumentalists. Prizes, giveaways, and opportunities to donate will be part of the event. Styles for the 26 numbers will range from tap, jazz, and ballet to modern, lyrical, and musical theater. Kalinowski was able to bring back Rockette-style pieces, which were not possible last year, for songs such as “Jingle Bell Rock,”
“Cool Yule,” “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” and “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers.” Pieces inspired by “The Nutcracker” will include “Waltz of the Flowers” and “Arabian Dance.” Lyrical pieces will be set to hymns such as “O Holy Night” and “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” and fun dances will be performed to well-known tunes of the season, such as “Santa Baby,” “My Only Wish (This Year),” and music from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Past shows have raised more than $30,000. “Cumulatively, over the past 16 years, we’ve raised over $380,000,” said Kalinowski, who is hoping to reach a milestone with this show, noting that “$400,000 would be pretty wonderful.” Tickets may be purchased by emailing Cojo_Wishes@LititzAcademy ofDance.com. More information may be found by searching Facebook for “CoJoMotion Dance Company” or “Lititz Academy of Dance.”
Advent Organ Concert Posted Organist Larry Hershey will return to the vintage 1958 analog Allen organ on First Friday, Dec. 3, for “Organic Reflections: Advent Edition.” The 30-minute concert will be held at 8 p.m. in the historic 1854 First Reformed Church, 40 E. each Sunday starting at 3:30 p.m. The giveaway includes 15 food items. On Mondays, Providing Hope makes a snack bag run through the city with regular stops. To help homeless Reading residents to know where they can shower or do laundry, Providing Hope has created a flyer in English and Spanish that lists days of the week and locations of services. Now, the couple hopes to provide similar help in Lancaster County, where Jones, who works with autistic children, is already storing some of the clothing bank items she has collected. “At our house we have bins for male and female winter and summer shirts from small to extralarge,” said Jones. “I store plus sizes and kids’ clothes at my parents’ house in Lancaster.” Zenone, who owns a flooring business, added that Reading-area nonprofits now reach out to Providing Hope when they need clothing for a client. Both Jones and Zenone welcome donations of food and clothing and volunteers. Readers who would like to know more about the organization or would like to indicate interest in helping it expand into Lancaster may search for “Providing Hope” on Facebook.
Veterans from pg 1 The opening prayer was offered by pastor Bruce Tully, followed by the national anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the medley “Marches of the Armed Forces.” After all in attendance enjoyed a pancake and sausage breakfast, Greiner introduced U.S. Navy veteran Bill Terry, who spoke about his experiences as a medical deep-sea diver, including wearing a diving suit weighing 180 pounds. He was one of only two of a class of 160 to graduate the program. Terry has organized the Lancaster County Veterans Breakfast Club, which meets on the third Saturday of each month at 8 a.m. at the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant, 2760 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand. Speakers have included Greiner, attorneys from the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and a Gold Star Mother. Clyde Mease spoke about medical benefits afforded to veterans
and Medicare plans that are available to address specific coverage situations that veterans face regarding hospitalization. Before the event closed, Zook presented a check for $1,000 to Ed Zander, who represented Fisher House Foundation. Zander explained that Fisher House is like a Ronald McDonald House for veterans’ families - a home away from home for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and veterans’ medical centers. “There’s no cost for them to stay,” said Zander. Following the check presentation, Tully concluded the event with prayer, and taps was played in memory of departed veterans. More information about ULTWMA may be found by searching for “Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association” on Facebook.

Zenone and Jones first connected when Jones, who grew up in the Donegal area, saw an ad on Craigslist seeking donations for homeless people in Reading. She reached out to Zenone, who had placed the ad, and the pair began serving the homeless community together. On Sept. 17, 2020, Providing Hope celebrated its second anniversary as an organization. The pair now works with several Lancaster County food stores, including the Grocery Outlet Bargain Markets. Their first partnership was with Justin and Ellie Maenner, who own the Spring Valley Road store, purchasing items at a deep discount. They have also partnered with Heather and Mike Cherasaro, who own the Lincoln Highway East store, and the couple works with the Manheim Grocery Outlet store. “They reached out to us when we opened the store in April 2020,” recalled Heather, who noted that an oatmeal manufacturer had printed the wrong expiration date on its product. “It wasn’t expired, but we weren’t going to sell it, so we said, ‘Here you go,’” said Heather. “What’s really interesting with this craft is that it combines the skills of working with different metals, mainly steel, and the creative artistic design elements that people incorporate into the item,” said Luke Shultz, member of the Pennsylvania Artist Blacksmiths’ Association (PABA). “We call ourselves artist blacksmiths, as opposed to the traditional (image) of a blacksmith from 200 years ago.” The PABA gallery meeting will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Paradise Community Center, 6 Londonvale Road, Paradise, located just off Route 30. The group is part of the Artists Blacksmith’s Association of North America (ABANA), one of two chapters in Pennsylvania. “We cover eastern Pennsylvania, with some members from surrounding states,” said Shultz of the 20-year-old group, which boasts about 200 members who have a general interest in working with
metal. “(That interest is) mainly blacksmithing or forging, but we also have some people who do tinsmithing, silversmithing, general fabricating, and other disciplines within the umbrella of metalwork,” Shultz said. The group holds regular meetings, all of which are open to the public. Meetings are often held at a member’s shop or historic blacksmith shop and include demonstrations of certain skills or projects. The gallery meeting, which is always held in December, is traditionally located in Paradise. “We call it our gallery meeting because it is a little different than the rest of our meetings,” said Shultz, who noted that the meeting is a showcase of metal-related items. “Members bring in examples of what they worked on throughout the year or collections they might have of antique tools or things they want to sell.” Another highlight of the event is the Ironmaster of the Day competition. Blacksmiths from pg 11 “Any member can make an item designated for that competition,” explained Shultz, who said that the items are displayed at the meeting and voted on to determine which maker will be Ironmaster of the Day. This year’s designated item to create is a holiday wreath. “The person who makes (a wreath for the competition) creates their interpretation of a metal holiday wreath,” said Shultz. “They are all making the same thing, but there are so many variations on how people approach making that item.” According to Shultz, interest in the craft of blacksmithing has grown recently. “Blacksmithing ... has seen a
great resurgence in the last four years, because of television reality shows like ‘Forged in Fire,’” he said. “One of the best ways to get into the hobby is to join an association like PABA, where you can go to meetings and see demonstrations about how to work with metal,” he noted. “The (attendees) will be rubbing elbows and talking with experienced (crafters).” Shultz added that the organization has a lending library that features several hundred volumes of books, DVDs, and periodicals. For more information, readers may search for “PABA PA Artist Blacksmiths’ Association” on Facebook.
