Recovery Minded: The Potter’s House Of Ruth BY ANN MEAD ASH
Angie Jakubowski, women’s ministry director with The Potter’s House of Ruth Addiction Recovery and Discipleship Ministry, is comfortable talking about her background - her childhood in Wormleysburg, her degrees from Elizabethtown College, and the intervention organizations she founded but Angie’s face lights up when she is asked about the ministry she began leading in March.
Mission Church staff members (from left) Brian Bitler, Tammi Nolt, and Jeremiah Miller have helped to organize the church food pantry, which distributes boxes of food to area residents in need.
Food Pantry Is Part Of Church’s Mission hen Mission Church moved to 651 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, in the spring of 2018, members and staff set a goal. “We wanted to impact the community,” said Brian Bitler, director of operations and strategic advancement for the church. Opening a food pantry was a topic of discussion. “When the pandemic hit, we had two things,” recalled Bitler. “We had the facility … (and we had) people who rose up for that (challenge).” Armed with opportunity, space, and willing workers, Mission Church opened a food pantry that is available to all area residents. Mission Church operations coordinator Tammi Nolt stated that the Mission Food Pantry is generally open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. “Once a month anyone can come pick up a box of food,” she said, noting that contact information will be requested from recipients but preregistration is not necessary. Each household is
the boxes, but some items, including canned vegetables and dry pastas, have been hard to come by. Some other area churches contribute to the pantry, and donations are accepted during the hours the pantry is open to recipients. Those wishing to donate may visit https://mission -church.com/foodpantry for a list of items the pantry needs. Items that are always priorities include canned vegetables and fruit, canned chicken, beans, rice, and cereal. Currently, Miller and Nolt are doing some of the work to manage the pantry, but most of the effort is overseen by volunteers. Eventually, the church hopes to provide a shopping experience for food pantry recipients. “It will be easier when people are seeing (food items) and choosing them,” said Bitler. During the summer, the pantry was supplemented by the church’s own garden plot located at the back of the building. “We grew tomatoes, peppers, squashes, green beans, and sweet potatoes,” said Miller. Bitler added that organizers plan to double the size of the garden in 2021.

Several years ago, when Sarah Northrup was homeschooling her children, she discovered her daughter had dyslexia. “(It was) impossible to find help and support,” recalled Northrup. “I felt I was very isolated.” Northrup, who already had a degree in elementary and special education, responded by turning to the National Institute of Learning Development at Virginia University

given one box of food weighing approximately 50 pounds, but Nolt said that other items are added when they are available. “This summer, we had a lot of produce, meat, and milk,” she said. “It depends on what our stock is.” Jeremiah Miller, director of facility management at the church, said that the box of nonperishable items generally contains cans of vegetables or fruit, canned meat, and a variety of pastas and sauce. He added that sometimes oatmeal or granola bars are included along with coffee, tea, and snacks. “Comfort food is always nice to have,” he said. In its first six months, the food pantry fed 1,000 different families. “We have provided about 2,500 boxes of food since we started,” Nolt said of the drive-through operation. Bitler noted that recipients pull up and are signed in by volunteers before receiving boxes of items. Personal care products and detergents are often available for those who ask. “We can house seven students, and we accepted our first student in July,” said Angie. “We are a four-phase program, and everything is Christ-centered and biblically based,” she added, noting that the first two phases are structured and focused on recovery, including biblical 12-step meetings and curriculum. Angie holds a bachelors degree in addictions and behavioral counseling and a master’s degree in strategic leadership. She has served as a family interventionist with Restorative Interventions, which she founded in New Cumberland. She was also a mobile crisis counselor for Schuylkill County and with Lebanon Youth Advocacy, and she worked for Teen Challenge. Prior to 2020, Angie and her husband, Joel, who is the men’s ministry director for The Potter’s House, participated with the ministry. In late 2019, Angie was asked to prayerfully consider whether she was being called to work for the program. In early 2020, she accepted the position.

Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster will celebrate 13 years of spreading holiday cheer through alternative giving on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will be held virtually due to the pandemic. To date, Gifts That Give Hope has raised over $300,000 for a variety of charitable organizations based in Lancaster and those working around the world. The fair will consist of 30 local and global nonprofit organizations that carry out a range of humanitarian efforts. Each nonprofit will have a donation-based gift for shoppers to purchase in honor of friends and family members on their holiday gift list. The goal of the gift fair is to encourage the generous spirit of the giving season down a more mindful path via alternative giving. Rooted in compassion, alternative giving helps people give threefold by showing friends and family they care about them with a gift, by supporting organizations that contribute positively to the social landscape, and by combating the environmental impact of consumerism. Each nonprofit at the fair will offer one undesignated gift that allows shoppers to contribute a custom donation that will support its general mission. Upon checkout, shoppers will receive a gift insert and card, which will be mailed to their home in time for the holiday season. For more information, including a list of the participating nonprofits, readers may visit www.giftsthatgive hope.org/lancaster.
Church Plans Musical Event Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, will sponsor the next installment of its Westminster Music Concert Series, “Advent Service of Lessons and Carols,” on Sunday, Dec. 6, at 6:30 p.m. The concert will also be streamed online. Gripping, true story. Vulnerably shared. A mother faces grief but also is surprised to find joy when her first two children are born with severe disabilities. In circumstances that usually shatter a family, this husband and wife overcome. Walk with them, cry with them, and celebrate their growth in faith.
The continuing story of this risk-taking Denlinger family as they go on a once in a lifetime, five-year journey across America.
Angie noted that during phase two of the program, an opportunity to earn a GED is offered and students are able to work. “In phase four, students begin to create their own community support network, and ... prepare to transition to whatever is next.” A case manager works with students to develop an individualized goal plan that covers all domains of their lives. Angie noted that the case manager and students create action steps, which are monitored throughout the process. Life skills, such as cooking and cleaning are also taught. “Our students are required to go to off-site counseling weekly,” said Angie. A weekly group therapy session is also required. “When they leave, we want them to have a strong foundation in the Lord, employment, a savings account, a Christ-centered support network, and we want them to be plugged in to the community and be an effective member of society,” Angie noted. Because no student is turned away

based on inability to pay, students are expected to give back to the ministry to help cover their fees or help someone else who does not have the ability to pay. “They must give at least 10 hours on arts or crafts in whatever their giftings are,” explained Angie, displaying intricately crocheted baby items and sewing projects along with artwork. Angie said the students have come from the Lancaster County Prison and from self-referrals. The program is designed to be eight to 12 months in length, but each student’s course is individually determined. Already, she is looking toward providing another phase for graduates. “We would love to see a second location where there could be long-term supervised housing opportunities available to these ladies for when they graduate,” she said. “A place that’s safe.” Readers who would like to know more may visit https://thepotters houselancaster.com.

In a year of uncertainty and change, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), located at 2420 Gehman Lane, Lancaster, is sticking to tradition with its annual food giveaway for Christmas. “Our plan for Christmas is to give away our normal food boxes,” said Gayle Smith, director of finance with CVCCS. “It has always been a pickup (event).” In the past, the food pickup also included Christmas shopping options inside the building. While those cannot occur this year due to COVID-19
restrictions, CVCCS board president Lisa Horst noted that staff and volunteers who take food boxes to cars on Saturday, Dec. 19, will be also deliver warm greetings. “We will be giving Christmas cookies out that day, and the volunteers go out and talk to each person and wish them a wonderful holiday,” she said. Meal boxes, which will be given to families that register in advance and visit CVCCS at their appointed time, will include fresh potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, vegetables, sweet

On the same day the boxed meals are distributed, the organization will provide about 50 individual dinners to seniors living in Nathan Village. “We cook the turkeys, mashed potatoes, and gravy, and then we give them the rest of the fixings for them to make for Christmas,” said Horst. “(The seniors) have small ovens and limited (cooking) space.” This Christmas, CVCCS is also partnering with Victory Church. Church members will provide small gifts and Christmas cards to go along with the meals. Smith explained that the Christmas food boxes are available to those in need living in Conestoga Valley School District and to those who attend church in the district and are referred to CVCCS by the church. potatoes, turkey or ham, rolls, and a pie. “This time there will be milk and eggs,” added Smith. CVCCS clients have become accustomed to a drive-through food pickup. “When COVID first hit, we went to a drive-through procedure because our clients still needed food,” explained Horst. “(Clients) would put the back of the car up, and we would put the groceries in and they would be on their way,” said Horst, who recalled that five part-time staff members handled most of those duties, but that on Wednesdays when the food truck delivered, several volunteers came in to stock shelves or go into the community to retrieve donations. “We had a pickup truck convoy because … restaurants would call with extra food,” said Horst. Smith added that one restaurant provided 90 dozen eggs to the ministry.

and Northrup and one other are certified in educational therapy. “We are striving to serve kids that are excelling academically, but also those who are (challenged),” said Northrup, who noted that weekly tutoring is offered. The school follows Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for COVID-19. To keep communication flowing in the drop-off program, assignment sheets are provided to parents weekly, and Northrup sends out a monthly newsletter. A fellowship of mothers meets twice a month at the school to pray. “Our vision is threefold,” said Northrup. “We look to equip students … encourage parents, and cultivate hope.” Shelleen Weaver of New Holland is sending her son to Firm Foundations this fall. “My son is thriving in this environment, and I couldn’t be more grateful,” reported Weaver. More information about the program is available at www.firm foundationsacademy.com.

in Virginia Beach, Va., where she received her certification as an education therapist. She began tutoring other homeschooled students who had dyslexia and other learning issues. “I found that many of the students I was serving (had) parents who were feeling a lot like I was feeling,” said Northrup. “I thought, ‘I can help three kids at a time … or I can start this program to serve a broader population.’ It had been on my heart for a very long time.” In fall of 2019, Northrup opened Firm Foundations Academy, a hybrid homeschooling program, which meets at Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, 110 Durlach Road, Ephrata, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Currently, the school serves a total of more than 50 students in grades one through 10, with the goal of adding grades 11 and 12 in the next few years. “Our goal is for students in 11th and 12th grades to have partnerships to take classes at Lancaster Bible College or to have internships so they can go out to the community to get job training,” Northrup noted. “We offer a full scope of classes,” said Northrup, who is head of school for the academy. She listed English, math science, history, art, music, and Bible, among the classes, noting that she tries to offer an eclectic mix taught according to classical educational philosophy with a biblical worldview. “Our high school kids are doing leadership classes,” she noted. “They are learning about character development and then doing service projects out in the community every month.” As a hybrid, the academy represents a partnership between parents and teachers. “It’s teacher directed and parent supported,” explained Northrup. “The teachers supply all the content and lesson plans for parents.” Northrup explained that a reading assignment taught in school would be tied to components the student completes at home and then reinforced at school ending in the student writing a paper on the topic at home.
