Indoor Dining
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola, has been holding a community meal on the third Friday of each month beginning at 5:55 p.m. for more than 20 years. With the onset of COVID-19, church members switched to a takeout format but did not miss distributing meals.
Now, the church is once again offering indoor dining, with the next meal to be served on Friday, Dec. 16.
“The doors open at 5:30 p.m.,” said organizer Patty Williams, who noted that attendees gather in the church vestibule before moving to the dining room to get coffee or tea and be seated. “At 5:55 p.m. there’s a prayer,” explained Williams, who added that the menu is then announced and people get in line to receive their food cafeteria style. Meals include a main dish, such as macaroni and cheese, meatballs, chicken strips, potpie, beef barbecue, or Amish wedding casserole,
which mixes meats and sides associated with Thanksgiving. Side dishes are usually green beans, applesauce or fruit, and a dessert is included. In addition, the group sometimes receives bread from Panera, which is handed out with bottles of water.
Zion Lutheran partners with Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Hellers, and volunteers from that church cook and distribute the meal every other month. Currently, about 150 meals are served monthly.
“We deliver 80 meals (a month),” explained Williams. Rod Smith takes flyers to Nathan Village, a nearby apartment complex, to put in doors prior to each meal, and Tara and Don Fausnaught deliver 65 meals to Nathan Village Apartments and another 20 to Zook’s Motel. Pat Kohler creates a prayer card to go with the meals. In addition to the monthly meal, volunteers prepare and deliver 90 meals to Grace Lutheran Church in Lancaster four times per year, during months that have five Wednesdays.

Tina Cosgrove Edgell cannot remember a time when her parents, James and Kathy Cosgrove, did not own the Revere Tavern in Paradise. The Cosgroves purchased the property at 3063 Lincoln Highway with a man named Buzz Myers when Tina was just a child nearly 60 years ago. “It was just this bar and one dining room,” recalled Tina. “When Buzz wanted out, my dad bought his part.”
In the early 1970s, an employee
named Betty Hottenstein was looking forward to her son returning from serving in Vietnam, and she asked the Cosgroves if he could work in the restaurant. “Ray Hottenstein came to work for my parents and helped to develop the business,” said Tina, who noted that the expansion included adding the banquet room and, in the 1990s, the hotel and theater located behind the restaurant, along with the suites located next door. Ray eventually went on to own the Olde Greenfield Inn.

Tina Edgell (left) and Kim Nichols in the bar of the Revere Tavern, which recently closed after nearly 60 years in business
Once the Revere Tavern announced in September that it was closing in early October, past customers from near and far made the journey to enjoy one more meal. “The last three weeks (we were open) was a walk down memory lane,” said Tina. “That’s where you realize the impact you made on the community,” she added. “This wasn’t just a restaurant; it was part of these families’ histories.”
Many patrons were first introduced to the restaurant when they attended a special event. “We had some remarkable weddings here,” said Tina.
“We had so many fire company banquets,” said assistant general manager Kim Nichols, who listed fire departments including Gordonville, Paradise, Lafayette, Christiana, and Eden among the departments that held yearly events at the venue. Tina recalled that in 1986 when a fire threatened the front of the building, the Eden Fire Company, located in Manheim Township, saved the structure.
Weathering COVID-19 restrictions was hard on the business, but the current labor shortage was also a detriment. Tina’s father stopped working daily in 2018. Her mother
stopped coming in during the COVID-19 shutdown, but she continues to be involved with the hotel from home. Tina’s brother Jim Cosgrove was the restaurant’s general manager, and Tina has worked there full time for the last several years. Along the way, her sister, Patty Watson; her own daughter; and her niece and nephew and other family members all worked there as well. According to Tina, everyone just filled in where they were needed. According to Kim, humility was the prevailing attitude. “People that worked here never said, ‘That’s not my job,’” she pointed out. “We all did whatever it took … dishwashing, serving, cooking.”
Both Tina and Kim would like to see the building become a new restaurant. “This building is a part of the community,” said Kim. “It’s a gorgeous, very sturdy, and well-taken-care-of building. It would be wonderful for someone to see the potential and have the drive to start a restaurant.”
Although the Revere Tavern is closed, the Best Western Plus Revere Inn and Suites remains open, and updates may still be found by searching for “Revere Tavern” on Facebook.

The Conestoga Valley Education Foundation (CVEF) awarded more than $16,252 in grants during its 2022 fall grant cycle. CVEF officially approved the grants at its Oct. 21 meeting.
Seven grants at various schools in the Conestoga Valley School District were approved. The grants were awarded for Hydroponic Plants at Brownstown Elementary School, Farm-to-Table at Fritz Elementary School, Pickleball Stress Relief at Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS), Adopt a Plant and Plant Pals at Fritz, InstaSong: Songs of Social Media at CVHS and Gerald G.
Huesken Middle School, Apple Pencils for the Art Department at CVHS, and Emotional Regulation Is a Skill Worth Celebration! at Leola and Smoketown elementary schools.
The Hydroponic Plants program will enable students to grow hydroponic herbs without soil to harvest herbs and make simple recipes. Students will learn the pros and cons of growing plants without soil and apply this to real-world situations. Students will also learn about the practicality of hydroponic plants in urban areas.
Farm-to-Table will introduce fourth-grade students to a farming
experience that relates to current science standards. The ultimate goal of this project-based learning opportunity will be to grow enough produce to sell, thus also providing students with business experience.
Pickleball Stress Relief is intended for use by the high school’s RISE program, which supports students who are not, for a number of reasons, experiencing success in the traditional classroom. The goal is to add pickleball as a new stress management technique.
Adopt a Plant and Plant Pals will be piloted at Fritz Elementary and will be a collaborative project with Ken’s Gardens, a local greenhouse, in which classrooms will “adopt” a plant. This project will promote responsibility and provide students hands-on experiences with living things.
InstaSong: Songs of Social Media will fund a custom choral arrangement for singers in grades six to 12 that will premiere at the March 2023 concert. Students will meet with the
arranger to learn about the process of composing and arranging music. This grant will also cover the cost of performance T-shirts for the participants.
Apple Pencils for the Art Department will allow for the extension of art concepts through creative and communicative visual imagery. All Conestoga Valley students use an iPad, and the addition of the Apple pencils will allow for easier revisions, sketching and planning, and documenting of work.
Emotional Regulation Is a Skill Worth Celebration! will help provide emotional support students with supplemental materials designed to facilitate de-escalation while also teaching social skills. Items purchased will be intended to teach students how to use coping and emotional regulation strategies, enhance the ability of emotional support students to recognize “big” emotions and self-regulations, and decrease the number of yearly incident reports that address concerns such as physical aggression.

program director at Woodcrest. “It doesn’t change, but there are different ways to think it through.”
One aim of the event is to make the experience more real for attendees. “Audiences understand what the characters are going through,” said Fox. “That’s what we want to help bring to life.”
Now in its 12th year, Jour-
ney to Bethlehem gives participants the opportunity to become part of the Christmas story as they follow Mary and Joseph from the time they receive the news that Mary will give birth to the Christ child to their arrival at the stable where Christ was born and beyond. Journey will be held at the retreat center, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Fridays,
Dec. 9 and 16, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturdays, Dec. 10 and 17, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to dress warmly and wear appropriate water-resistant shoes on the hourlong trek. Although the event is family-friendly, strollers and those with mobility issues cannot be accommodated because of the rugged landscape.
The live Nativity is interactive in that adults and children who attend may participate in specific scenes. As they travel with the characters from the Bible, participants will witness the walk to Bethlehem, where they will experience the disappointment of finding there is no room at the inn. The journey will also take attendees to a marketplace, where they may spend a shekel to purchase raisins or crackers, and then to a field, where they will gather with shepherds to hear the angels announce Christ’s birth. Finally, visitors will arrive at a stable along with the shepherds, where they will all meet Joseph
and Mary and baby Jesus. “Together they are in awe of how biblical prophecy foretold this event,” explained Fox. The final stop is now a live presentation that takes place in the palace of one of the wise men.
Fox noted that about 3,000 people attended the 2021 event. The cost to attend will be discounted for children ages 4 to 16. Children age 3 and under will be admitted for free. In addition, a special price will be available to members of an immediate family living in the same household. Reservations may be made at www.woodcrest retreat.org/events/journey. Readers who have questions may call 717-738-2233.
All funds raised by the event will benefit the ministry of Woodcrest, a nonprofit retreat and camp center that serves more than 1,900 children each year. In the case of inclement weather, those planning to attend Journey to Bethlehem should check the aforementioned website for information.

The kidney donation and transplant community is made up of people who have often connected in life-anddeath circumstances. Barb Lundberg of Lebanon, who had previously received a kidney, met Dorlee Martin of Terre Hill, a kidney donor, a few years ago. Since then, both have gotten to know Pham Nghia, better known as simply Lam, a dialysis patient living in Vietnam.
Lam is 29 now. A single father raising a young daughter, he first learned he has polycystic kidney disease (PKD) in his early 20s. PKD is hereditary. Lam’s mother died of the disease, and his daughter may have inherited it. Lam has been on dialysis for eight years. Three times each week, he takes a bus to a hospital to undergo dialysis. Each treatment costs about $20 - an astronomical amount in a country like Vietnam. Lam
had hoped to receive a donated kidney from his father, but that did not work out, so he is now on the list to receive one from a deceased donor. The odds of that are not high, but in Vietnam a donated kidney by a living person must come from someone who lives in the same household, and Lam has only his daughter.
Lundberg and Martin connected with Stacey Jean Inion, who has missionary and fundraising experience, and together they have been raising funds to help Lam in a variety of ways. Some funds go toward testing that is necessary to help him receive a kidney, and other money is used for dialysis treatments and food. “He’s so poor he eats (prepackaged foods), which are loaded with salt and the worst thing for him,” said Martin, who, along with Lundberg and Inion, organized a sub sandwich sale to cover several months of Lam’s expenses.

The trio would like to be able to help Lam send his daughter to school. Lam grew up in poverty, so he never went to school. Before he became ill, he worked as a truck driver. “His daughter was in kindergarten, which is $50 a month,” said Martin, who noted the children receive three meals a day in school. “Lam had to pull her from kindergarten (because he could no longer afford it).”
To help support Lam and his daughter, Martin, Lundberg, and Inion are setting up a crowdsourcing page at www.gofundme.com/f/givelam-hope-and-a-future. The page will provide information on ways to support Lam’s dialysis, food, or education for his daughter. Those who are interested in helping may visit the link to donate or ask questions.
“(Lam) continually says, ‘I
can’t believe that all of you care for me,’” reported Martin. “He said, ‘You guys have supported me better than my family has,’” she added, not-
ing that Lam’s supporters share their Christian faith with him when they can.
“God connected us all for a reason,” noted Lundberg.

In 2020, the church served 1,765 meals, and in 2021, 1,600 meals had been served by November. During 2022, 1,800 meals have been served.
Pastor Karen Larson noted that the meal before Christmas is special. “We do carols and gifts,” she said. Williams added that a bag with treats and a card and Christmas cookies is generally part of that meal. Activities and treats are usually added for the meal just prior to Easter as well.
Organizer Karen Brunken pointed out that the church is handicapped-accessible and
