A Family Tradition BY ANN MEAD ASH
Lane Buckwalter’s earliest memory of his father, Lamar, as a firefighter goes back to 2008, when Lamar was injured in the Dart Container fire. Lane remembers going to pick his father up at the hospital. That memory did not deter Lane from becoming a junior firefighter on Oct. 5 of this year. “I was always interested in being a firefighter,” said Lane, a sophomore at Conestoga Valley High School, who noted that his father’s involvement with the Lincoln Fire Company on Market Street in Ephrata, where both are now volunteers, definitely influenced his decision to join. “My dad being active had an impact,” he said. “It got me around the firetrucks and the guys at the station.” Lamar, who grew up in Leola, became a firefighter at age 14, running with the Bareville and Upper Leacock crews and later working with Manheim Township. He now serves as a firefighter/EMT with Lincoln, which is close to his place of business. Lamar’s father ran with
Reamstown Fire Company, but it is his maternal grandfather, Chambersburg resident Clyde Mowen, who receives the credit for inspiring him to join the fire company. “I went to the firehouse with him when I was a kid,” Lamar recalled. Lane’s training actually began when he was 14, when he completed CPR and first aid courses. On Oct. 19, he took part in his first training session as a junior firefighter. In his current capacity, Lane can run calls with certain restrictions. He is allowed to pull out the hose, hook up hydrants, change out air cylinders, and repack the hose. He is allowed to go to vehicle rescues, as well as fires, with a restriction for calls to Route 222. “If we get a call on 222, he is allowed to go, but he can’t get out of the rescue (vehicle),” explained Lamar. Father and son have already attended a simulated building fire together. Lane rode in the engine, while Lamar was in the rescue vehicle. “By having him on the engine, I knew he would gain skills,” explained Lamar. “I went in and did my job as a rescue, and

Weil Is Make It With Wool Winner BY ANN MEAD ASH
“(When I won), I was completely shocked because the other outfits were stunning,” said Cara Weil, first-place adult contestant in the Pennsylvania Make It With Wool competition held in October. “When they called mine, my eyes got big,” recalled the Smoketown resident, who quickly deferred the credit for her win. “God gets all the glory and 100% of the praise for any awards I have ever gotten,” she said. “He gave me the talent.” Cara Weil models the dress she knitted for the Make It With Wool competition she won in October.
Weil, who has taught music at Jackson Middle School in the School District of Lancaster for 22 years, won for her one-piece knitted olive-colored dress. She said she chose the pattern because it was something she knew she could wear well, but also because it was a challenge. “There were stitches in that pattern I had not done before,” explained Weil, who also chose to use alpaca yarn, which was a first for her. The competition was held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, and it pitted Weil against seven other adults from around the state. See Make It With Wool pg 5

Stone Independent School from pg 1 March 2015. He described an adventure fraught with challenges, including a high-elevation hike that required the group to cross a metal swinging bridge. After an intense effort, when they reached the other side exhausted, Kirchner said to Simpson, “I wish school could always be this way.” From there, the pair set out to create a school that was “problem-based, experiential, deeply challenging, and rigorous in a different kind of way,” according to Simpson. That goal took two years of talking with parents, teachers, and others while working to raise funds and build community. In 2017, the Stone Independent School, a college preparatory
school, opened to serve 20 students in a small stone building on Lime Street in Lancaster. Currently, the school, which is notw located at 480 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, serves 116 students in a format that includes six six-week marking periods. With classes running up to 120 minutes, students have the time to collaborate and also include a number of electives in their schedules. “Our thinking is schedules should tell a story about who the students are and that’s what we should market to college admissions offices,” said Simpson. By emphasizing deep learning in coordination with meaningful work, Simpson said the school endeavors to help students develop 21st-century
skills, including “communication, collaboration, high-level critical thinking, ability to navigate complex social and emotional situations, and to use design thinking to solve complex problems.” Simpson noted that part of the Stone philosophy is to erase the disconnect between what students do in school and the work they will do in their adult lives. “We really believe everything our students do in physics, math, English, entrepreneurship - everything aligns to real work,” explained Simpson. Our kids are constantly in a process of designing, creating, and exhibiting work that matters.” More information about the school may be found at www.stoneindependent.org.

Rough And Tumble
CONESTOGA VALLEY EDITION
BY ANN MEAD ASH
When giving a tour of the Rough & Tumble Museum, 4997 Lincoln Highway East, Kinzers, museum volunteer Kathleen Hazzard points out the buildings that represent the many organizations that make up the group. “That’s the horse-drawn museum. That building is antique cars, and that’s the blacksmith shop,” she notes, but then she pauses to explain how strongly she believes in the message of the organization. “We are preserving America’s agricultural and industrial history because it’s really important to remember where we came from as we go forward,” Hazzard said. Not only is the Rough & Tumble Museum, which covers 33 acres along Route 30 near Paradise, working to preserve history, but it is also working to correct misinformation about the group itself. “People don’t know we’re open to the public,” explained Hazzard. “We are a membership-based, board of directors-run museum, but everyone is welcome.” Bud Burdy, current Rough & Tumble president, echoed Hazzard. “ We continually learn that no one knows we

However, Lane sees this education as just the beginning. “I plan on being a career firefighter,” he noted. With that goal in mind, Lane plans to attend Lancaster County Career and Technology Center, where, as a senior, he can take fire protective services courses.
“I’m looking forward to walking into a fire with my dad,” said Lane. While Lamar agreed that working a fire with Lane will be exciting, he also noted that with his three decades of firefighting experience, he sees that occurrence differently than his son. “I know the risks. I know the territory,” he said. “I tell Lane all the time, ‘My job as an old firefighter is to make you an old firefighter.’” According to Lamar, the Lincoln Fire Company volunteers are a diverse group of about 40 active members. Make It With Wool from pg 1 She said that the three judges first examine the entry “flat.” “You turn it in, and they spend time analyzing it,” she said. Next, contestants model the entry and talk to the judges about the challenges of creating the piece. “At the end of the day, you model it for the audience, and they announce winners.” Weil said she learned the basics of knitting from her mother at an early age. “ W hen I was 6 or 7, my mom taught me to knit and sew, but you couldn’t enter 4-H until you were 8,” she recalled. “Once I was of age, my mom entered me in Garden Spot 4-H Club, and that’s where I learned to sew and knit properly.” After aging out of 4-H at age 18, she continued to knit and sew, teaching herself new stitches and techniques. “I enjoy it. It’s a passion of mine,” said Weil, who noted that she is always looking to improve upon her technique, seeking out patterns to make outfits that will make her more versatile in her stitching. For Weil, working to sharpen her skills means entering local competitions in a variety of categories not
limited to fiber arts. “I spend a lot of my summer canning, knitting, sewing,” said Weil, who regularly enters up to 70 items in sewing, knitting, baked goods, and canned goods categories at fairs and farm shows at Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Denver, and New Holland. “My grandmother showed at the fairs. My mother showed at the fairs. It’s in the family,” she said. As the first-place adult, Weil noted that her garment will be entered for national judging in January. The American Heart Association recently recognized Weis Markets with a Distinguished Achievement Award for its significant contributions to the success of the Association’s Eastern States region. According to Natalie Wech, co-chair of the American Heart Association’s southcentral Pennsylvania board of directors, Weis has raised and committed more than $1.5 million since its inaugural Life Is Why consumer campaign, which launched in February 2019. In 2021, during American Heart Month, February, store teams across the company’s 197 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia and Virginia raised $575,000 for the Life Is Why consumer campaign. Additionally, Weis Markets became the first sponsor of the new Live Fierce Capital Region community impact campaign. This yearlong campaign helped the American Heart Association address community health priorities, including providing CPR in Schools training kits to several school districts throughout central Pennsylvania, supplying a local Federally Qualified Health Center with blood pressure self-monitoring tools to help patients most at risk of uncontrolled high blood pressure to manage their blood pressure at home. The campaign also equipped Harrisburg School District with new filtered water bottle filling stations, which will provide students with access to clean drinking water in an effort to encourage them to hydrate with water instead of sodas and
