By “entire staff,” Horst was referring to Dave Unangst, CVCCS director of operations; client advocate Dottie Slothower; administrator Brittney Anderson; Gayle Smith, who handles finance; and volunteer coordinator Kim Sensenig. “(Staff members) put in

extra hours and came in at different times (than usual),” reported Horst. “They did every job that needed to be done, and there wasn’t one person who didn’t step up and do what they could.” Using Smith as an example, Horst described how staff members pitched in where they were needed. “Gayle could do phone calls from home, and she needed to be home, so she would take care of manning the phones,” said Horst. “Everyone else did every job that came up, so if we needed to pack, we packed, but we also stocked shelves, and we cleaned.” Feeding those living or attending church in the Conestoga Valley

School District was paramount for the organization. Because certain requirements were adjusted, the number of clients rose significantly. “The state removed income guidelines for three months over the summer, so income was not a factor,” explained Smith.

“They did every job that needed to be done, and there wasn’t one person who didn’t step up and do what they could.” Horst noted that the small

staff worked hard to meet the needs of area residents. “From April to June, we saw a 67% increase in new clients,” said Horst, who explained that individuals and families who had not qualified in the past now qualified because they had reduced hours or lost positions. “We saw a lot more people who needed our services,” she said. Smith noted that the CVCCS team hit the ground running, not missing a week of food service following the March 18 shutdown. “ We were right up to speed,” she said, noting that staff members called clients to explain that the food pantry would be

Lancaster County author Kim Kluxen Meredith recently published her first children’s book, “Henri’s Home,” about a hermit crab and his Jersey shore family.

Local Author from pg 1 “Henri’s Home” was inspired by summer vacations on the Jersey shore with Meredith’s grandchildren who prefer her made-up stories to books. “Henri the hermit crab and his family came into my head,” said Meredith, who told her friend Kathy Young the story while confessing, “But I cannot draw.” Young suggested Madenspacher as illustrator. The author and artist met once before the pandemic arrived, and Madenspacher showed Meredith samples of her

work. “ We hit it off right away. I knew she would be the right person,” recalled Meredith, who requested watercolors for a story that took place at the beach. For the next several months the pair communicated online as Meredith tweaked the story. “I would send her the text from a page, and she would interpret it so beautifully,” said Meredith. “It was a godsend that we were partnered together.” “Henri’s Home” is the story of a hermit crab who lives with his family under a

fishing pier. The tale sets the stage for Henri’s “growing” experience as he and his sister and parents scavenge along the shoreline, duck predator seagulls, and play together. When Henri outgrows his shell, a new one is found, but as he adjusts to his larger home, a mishap occurs that separates Henri from his pier. His adventure gives him and the reader an opportunity to meet many ocean creatures and learn how they live as Henri endeavors to find his family again. The book, which features more than 40 of Madenspacher’s drawings, was formatted by Ashley

Originally from upstate New York, Meredith worked as a Spanish teacher and a paralegal before moving to Lancaster with her first husband David Kluxen. When their children were preteens, David died as a result of a single-car accident in the early 1990s. Meredith journaled to work her way through her grief. “At night, I would write and cry and put it away,” she recalled. When she told a friend about the journal, the friend suggested Meredith’s writings might help someone else through grief. “Listen for the Whispers: Coping With Grief and Learning to Live Again” was first published in 2010. The book contains a workbook to help those who might be going through a similar experience. Meredith has conducted workshops and given talks based on the book. Meredith describes her second book, “Ocean Whispers,” published in 2018, as a gift book. It was based on a summer 2017 beach trip where each morning for 42 mornings, she picked up a shell and wrote a corresponding

Mission Church staff members (from left) Brian Bitler, Tammi Nolt, and Jeremiah Miller have helped to organize the church food pantry, which distributes boxes of food to area residents in need.

9 a.m. to noon. “Once a month anyone can come pick up a box of food, she said, noting that contact information will be requested from recipients but preregistration is not necessary. Each household is given one box of food weighing approximately 50 pounds, but Nolt said that other items are added when they are available. “This summer, we had a lot of produce, meat, and milk, she said. “It depends on what our stock is. Jeremiah Miller, director of facility management at the church, said that the box of nonperishable items generally contains cans of vegetables or fruit, canned meat, and a variety of pastas and sauce. He added that sometimes oatmeal or granola bars are included along with coffee, tea, and snacks. “Comfort food is always nice to have, he said. In its first six months, the food pantry fed 1,000 different families. “We have provided about 2,500 boxes of food since we started, Nolt said of the drive-through operation. Bitler noted that recipients pull up and are signed in by volunteers before receiving boxes of

items. Personal care products and detergents are often available for those who ask. Currently, the church partners with Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and Blessings of Hope to fill the boxes, but some items, including canned vegetables and dry pastas, have been hard to come by. Some other area churches contribute to the pantry, and donations are

When Mission Church moved to 651 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, in the spring of 2018, members and staff set a goal. “We wanted to impact the community,â€? said Brian Bitler, director of operations and strategic advancement for the church. Opening a food pantry was a topic of discussion. “When the pandemic hit, we had two things,â€? recalled Bitler. “We had the facility ‌ (and we had) people who rose up for that (challenge).â€? Armed with opportunity, space, and willing workers, Mission Church opened a food pantry that is available to all area residents. Mission Church operations coordinator Tammi Nolt stated that the Mission Food Pantry is generally open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Saturdays from

accepted during the hours the pantry is open to recipients. Those wishing to donate may visit https://mission -church.com/foodpantry for a list of items the pantry needs. Items that are always priorities include canned vegetables and fruit, canned chicken, beans, rice, and cereal. Currently, Miller and Nolt are doing some of the work to manage the pantry, but most of the effort is overseen by volunteers. Eventually, the church hopes to provide a shopping experience for food pantry recipients. “It will be easier when people are seeing (food items) and choosing them, said Bitler. During the summer, the pantry was supplemented by the church’s own garden plot located at the back of the building. “ We grew tomatoes, peppers, squashes, green beans, and sweet potatoes, said Miller. Bitler added that organizers plan to double the size of the garden in 2021.

The 401(k) plan with some PBA matching of employee contributions carries less cost and less risk for the PBA and provides employees with greater flexibility in their investment options. In addition to his legal support provided to the PBA, Creme is active in nonprofit community organizations. He has served as board chair of the American Red Cross of the Susquehanna Valley, the Lancaster County Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and Lancaster Catholic High School. He also has served as a member of the Northeast Service Area Resource Council of the American Red Cross and, in that position, he was responsible for coordinating and providing governance as well as planning counsel and advice to Red Cross chapters in the nine states of the northeast United States and in the Caribbean. The award was presented on Nov. 20 during a meeting of the PBA House of Delegates, the policymaking body of the association. Lawyer Matthew J. Creme Jr., who practices in the Lancaster office of Nikolaus and Hohenadel, has been awarded the Pennsylvania Bar Medal, the highest honor conferred by the Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA). The Pennsylvania Bar Medal is presented to a PBA member whose efforts have resulted in significant improvement in the administration of justice or the legal profession or who has performed outstanding service to the association, profession or community. PBA president David E. Schwager noted that Creme, who served as the PBA’s 201112 president, has provided pro bono legal support to the association over a number of years. Most recently, Creme led the team that oversaw the successful legal process authorizing the dissolution of the separate nonprofit status for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute (PBI), bringing PBI back into the PBA as its education department. PBI provides continuing legal education (CLE) to lawyers and judges across the commonwealth. Schwager said Creme was willing to, on a pro bono basis, go above and beyond to tackle PBA legal matters, despite the time commitment required. For example, Schwager said Creme guided the PBA’s shift from a defined employee pension plan to a market-competitive 401(k)

The idea for a print journal emerged from working with HDC staff and residents on the pilot program as a solution for residents who lack technology to fully utilize the app. In response to resident needs, Seniors BlueBook and Fizika also opted to make the journal fully bilingual, and each page features an outlined box with Spanish translation for all activities. The easy-toread 12-page workbook includes ideas to help seniors begin their wellness journeys, including recipes for healthy eating, creative approaches to mindfulness and engaging activities like word searches and word scrambles.

Seminary Begins Search For New President Lancaster Theological Seminary’s 11th president, the Rev. Dr. Carol E. Lytch, retired at the end of June after nine years leading the 195-year-old graduate school of theology. The seminary has launched a national search to find its next president. Mira Lloyd Dock is recognized as the first Pennsylvania woman to lead the way in forest conservation. Dock was also part of the movement led by Harrisburg businessman J. share his story. He explained that when he was a sophomore in high school, many people asked him about his future plans. Someone told him that he had the “look of a priest,” and that was the beginning of many conversations and reflections which ultimately led him to his vocation. Sawicki explained that when seeking to discern one’s vocation, a person should pray. Sawicki has been a priest for 11 years. Sawicki invited deacon Aaron Lynch to join the discussion. Lynch attended public school, started focusing on his Catholic faith in seventh and eighth grades, and entered the seminary right after high school. He is in his final year of seminary. Lynch shared that his studies are important, but it is most rewarding to focus on becoming a good priest. The boys’ presentation also included video segments from some of the other 23 seminarians ages 18 to 62 in the Harrisburg Diocese. They spoke about their favorite parts of seminary and being a priest, such as celebrating Mass and being a spiritual father. The seminarians also emphasized that they have fun, including taking part in flag football and soccer games. The school students were invited to ask questions at the end of the presentation. Lallone, in her presentation to the girls, emphasized that God wants everyone to know the fullness of His love and that each person is given many different gifts and talents through which he or she can help others see God’s love for them. Lallone said that as each person grows, he or she feels a call to a particular way of life that is his or her vocation. Lallone shared her personal story and some further thoughts. She said that God always brings people back to the little “nudges” of His plan. She told the girls to pay attention to the people in their lives, to give God time and space through prayer to allow Him to reveal His plan for them, and to build a relationship with God. She added that they should be faithful to who they are and to themselves and their friends.
