“We call this the Water Street Marriott location and youth hostel,” Mike Burkholder, chair of the board of directors of Water Street Mission, 210 S. Prince St., Lancaster, joked to open his comments at the Nov. 13 ribbon-cutting ceremony for the mission’s new Providence emergency shelter. The facility was created by renovating 9,000 square feet of warehouse space into a comfortable, attractive place where individuals may receive immediate care, shelter, and the opportunity for a better life. “Several years ago, (we looked at how to) align our core values and what we believe God’s heart is for our guests See Water Street pg 3

Schreiber Center Completes Portico, Plans Expansion The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, a Lancaster County-based provider of pediatric therapy services throughout central Pennsylvania, celebrated the renovation of the front entrance of its building, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, with a ribboncutting event under the new portico on Nov. 14. Schreiber leaders and supporters gathered for the event, which was planned primarily to thank the community for supporting the project. Donors who contributed to the project and attended the ribbon-cutting event included Sally Buckwalter, Mark Simeral, and Rick and Nancy Price. The new front entrance cost $300,000, and Schreiber raised all the money from private sources. The See Schreiber Center pg 7
Forest Hills Welcomes Youth Pastor By Ann Mead Ash
During a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 14, Schreiber Center president James DeBord thanked supporters who made possible the new portico, a project that sets up the next major construction plan for Schreiber: a three-story, $6 million expansion that will add 20,000 square feet of space.
For Zac Hummel, who officially became the youth and young adult pastor at Forest Hills Mennonite Church on Oct. 28, there was a familiarity about his new place of employment. Hummel was raised in Bird-in-Hand and was dedicated at Forest Hills as a baby. He grew up in the congregation, departing when he headed to Geneva College in Beaver Falls, where he earned a degree in Christian ministries and philosophy. During college, Hummel spent some time doing mission work in New Orleans, making the move back to Lancaster County last spring. “I got connected (to New Orleans) when I was in college,” said Hummel, who traveled to the area over three spring breaks in addition to doing summer internships See Forest Hills pg 10

Middle-schoolers in the Project-Based Learning program at Lancaster Mennonite School hosted their first-quarter exhibition night on Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. Exhibition nights are public presentations of projects at the end of each school quarter, offering family and friends the opportunity to see what students have been working on and empowering students to be able to present and demonstrate their projects in a professional way. Exhibition nights showcase work by students in the Project-Based Learning program, which is unique to the Lancaster Campus Middle School.

Christmas
The students had spent the months leading up to the exhibition night researching regions of the world that are experiencing a water crisis, and then they problem-solved, prototyped, analyzed, designed and built solutions. From focusing on a water shortage in India to hurricanes in the Bahamas, the students created desalination filters, rain catchment systems, hurricane simulators and redesigned groundwater wells. They also developed new water carrying systems to give women the opportunity to attend school. At the exhibition night, students presented and demonstrated their projects. More than 200 guests attended the public event and heard firsthand about the global water crisis around the world and the students’ solutions. The middle school’s theme for the next quarter is “The 100 People Project: A World Portrait,” and it focuses on people and populations. The aim of this project is to select and present a sample of 100 people from the Earth’s population of 7.5 billion people, with the 100 individuals representing the global population, proportionate to annual global surveys and statistics. The project will capture these people in film, photography, music and text. This world portrait will be used to make an introduction between the peoples of the Earth and to facilitate an understanding of the diversity and commonalities among people. The project aims to help participants better understand who humans are as a species and to inspire people to see the world in a new way. Exhibition nights are open to the public, and the next one will be held on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020, at 6 p.m. at Lancaster Mennonite Middle School on the Lancaster Campus, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster.

maintained. After they enter the building, the only time men and women might encounter each other is in the shared laundry room. Adams noted that families stay together elsewhere on campus. The facility also includes respite rooms for those who need downtime before sleeping, indoor storage for personal belongings, fewer bunk beds and more single beds to improve personal space, and a hotbox room where guests can have their belongings heat-treated to reduce the possibility of insects and germs. “We want the layout, design, and feel of the space to communicate dignity and value to each guest,” said Water Street Mission president Jack Crowley. “ We want our guests to know that God cares for them and they are worthy of love and respect. We believe that an environment that communicates dignity is an important first step to building trust and beginning the process of restoration through the other programs and support offered at Water Street.” The new facility’s name reflects Water Street Mission’s belief that God provides and protects. “Thinking ahead whether hours, days, or months - is impossible when you’re experiencing homelessness,” Crowley said. “When they come here … they can think about their future.” LanCo MyHome director Jennifer Koppel commented that

and our facilities,” Burkholder continued, noting that offering dignity, hope, and healing is part of the mission’s values. “(At Providence), guests will have (access to) calmness and peace and achieve restoration and equity in their lives.” The importance of treating people with dignity and respect was emphasized numerous times throughout the ceremony, as well as during tours of the facility afterward. For Water Street Mission leaders, that starts with clients’ first impressions as they enter the shelter and move throughout the venue. The front desk has the feel of a quality hotel, and the sleeping quarters will include numerous single cots. Gray manufactured plank floors run underfoot, and cream-colored walls surround the space. Vice president of programs Colleen Adams pointed out that the sconce lighting was designed to dim as the lights-out time of 10 p.m. approaches. Smaller lights ring the floor so guests and staff members can move safely throughout the building. Locking cellphone charging stations are located in the sleeping rooms. The new shelter was created with trauma-informed design, with safety for individuals being paramount, Adams said. FRIED BRIE Salty, buttery, sweet, crunchy, and smooth: these are all adjectives to describe the fried brie. Perfect for all your entertaining this holiday season. - 1 (8 oz.) Brie Cheese - 1 Egg, Scrambled - 1/2 cup Panko Breadcrumbs
- 2 tbsp. Apricot Preserves - 2-3 Dried Apricot, Diced - 2 tbsp. Golden Barrel Extra Virgin Olive Oil
In a small bowl, scramble egg. Open and remove the wrapping (not the white rind) and dip into egg mixture. Coat the brie evenly with Panko breadcrumbs, pressing crumbs into brie. Roll ends in breadcrumbs as well. Set aside. Drizzle medium-sized pan with olive oil and heat over medium-high heat until oil is hot. Place brie in pan and fry for several minutes until the breadcrumbs are golden brown. With brie up on its end, gradually rotate brie until ends are cooked, then flip over and cook the other side. Remove from heat and set on serving board. Heat apricot preserves in a pan on low heat (or microwave for 30 seconds at a time). Stir in diced apricots. Pour apricot mixture over brie and serve immediately. For more recipes visit www.goldenbarrel.com.

work was completed in August. The project sets the stage for Schreiber’s next major construction project: a $6 million, threestory expansion that will add 20,000 square feet of space to the current facility. “These are exciting times at Schreiber,” said Schreiber president James DeBord. “We are seeing more kids come through our doors every day, and thanks to many generous people in our community, we have been able to make some modifications to the center to try and keep up with the demand. But we are literally out of space. We need to expand, and we’re confident the community will rally behind us again so that we have the space we need to serve every family that needs us.” The project will create space and convert current administrative offices into new areas for therapy. The new construction will feature an expanded physical therapy department that will include a treatment suite with state-of-the-art concussion protocol and traumatic brain injury therapies. A new eco-friendly therapy garden will be built next to the expanded building. Schreiber is in the process of obtaining the necessary municipal approvals to begin construc-
tion. A capital campaign is expected to begin in 2020. The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development is a nonprofit organization that strives to offer the finest in innovative therapy, education, and recreation resources for children, teenagers, and young adults. Volleyball Tournament from pg 1 Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in partnership with International Assistance Mission. To reach the village where the clinic was held, members of the group first flew, then drove, and then walked, packing their equipment on hired horses. Before becoming a nurse, Glen attended Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), where he played volleyball and earned a degree in math. Following graduation from EMU, Glen worked as the dorm supervisor at LMHS and coached volleyball. He later completed a Johns Hopkins accelerated course to become a registered nurse in one year. During his adult life, Glen lived in six states, serving people from all walks of life as a
registered nurse. He worked at Lancaster Regional Hospital and for the Traveling Nurses Association, which took him to New York City and Oregon. He also worked in a government clinic on a Native American reserve in Supai, Ariz. The tournament is organized by Mark Leaman and Kevin Groff, with help from Glen’s cousin Joel Lapp. Leaman and Groff played volleyball for LMHS and were coached by Glen in 1992 and 1993. The initial tournament held in Glen’s honor was organized by his cousin Tim Lapp. From the tournament and other donations, the endowment has received almost $50,000. Funds are used to provide scholarships to immigrant and refugee
children at the school. Play during the tournament is “Glen-style,” which means there are no officials. Glen-style play will be explained to the teams prior to each tournament. Forest Hills from pg 1 and spending a gap year in New Orleans. “I went down to work with an organization there called Training Christian Community,” said Hummel, who also worked with an organization called Trinity Christian during the summers between his sophomore and junior and junior and senior years. After graduating college, he worked in Lancaster for a year before returning to New Orleans for a year with AmeriCorps City Year, which he described as “like a gap year for
post-college students to work in traditionally underprivileged schools to provide support.” He continued, “(AmeriCorps City Year participants) fill the gap between a teaching staff (in a district) that doesn’t have enough funds and/or have enough teachers.” This past spring, Hummel returned to Lancaster expecting to go back to New Orleans in the fall, but a conversation with lead pastor Jon Carlson during the summer changed his mind. “He was
interested in what I was doing, and he informed me that the position was going to be refocused to be more inclusive,” recalled Hummel, who added that because the church has a growing population of young adults, the role was broadening in scope and functions. When the position was offered, Hummel accepted. In his new role, Hummel is charged with “prioritizing strong relationships with collaborative function that will provide a healthy atmosphere for spiritual, personal, and emotional development of youths and leaders.” “(There’s) a

duality of wanting youths to be overseen while they’re at church, but also prioritizing individual relationships with them outside church,” Hummel said, adding that he will try to attend sporting events, concerts, and recitals that involve Forest Hills students. The position requires Hummel to work with three different groups within the church. First, he has a supportive role with the middle school youth program, which is coordinated by church volunteers. His main focus is on high school youths, teaching Sunday school and overseeing activities each Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mennonite Youth Fellowship (MYF). However, Forest Hill programs for young people do not stop when students graduate from secondary school. “We are continuing to grow and focus on the young adults, who are post-high school,” Hummel said. “We normally do things on Sunday afternoon,” he added, noting that board games and disc golf are popular activities. He noted that the age group is not one that has been served at Forest Hills in this way before. “We are moving into uncharted areas,” he said. “A number of us have stuck around (the area), and we continue to spend time together, so that’s where my energy is focused.” Forest Hills Mennonite Church is located at 100 Quarry Road, Leola. The church’s vision statement reads, “Called to be followers of Jesus Christ, Forest Hills Mennonite Church desires to be a welcoming community of grace, love, joy and peace, so that through the power of the Holy Spirit, God’s reconciling love will flow through us in healing and hope to all people.” Readers who would like to learn more about the church and its programs may visit www.foresthillschurch.org.

Climate Plan Lancaster City Council unanimously adopted a Municipal Operations Climate Action Plan on Sept. 24. The plan aims to make the city’s operations carbon neutral by the year 2050 in an effort to mitigate its greenhouse gas emissions and prevent climate change. In the near term, the city aims to draw 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025. Lancaster is among the first third-class cities in Pennsylvania to adopt such a plan, which advances Mayor Sorace’s previous commitment to the goals of the 2016 Paris Climate Agreement. The plan identifies 30 strategies in the areas of energy, vehicle fleet, water and wastewater, storm water, waste, culture of sustainability, and carbon offsets. Implementation of these strategies is intended to eliminate or offset all the greenhouse gases produced by the city’s various facilities and staff operations, which includes the water and
