The 35th annual Crispus Attucks Community Center MLK Breakfast will be held from 7 to 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, returning to an inperson gathering at Millersville University with the addition of a livestream option. The event will be held at Marauder Courts at the Student Memorial Center on Shenks Lane. The event’s master of ceremonies will be Jeremy Jenkins from WGAL-TV. Pedro Rivera, president of Thaddeus Stevens College, is this year’s honorary event chair.

The event is a time for the community to come together, to foster relationships, to dialogue around the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., and to confront issues of inequity and injustice. This event, the center’s largest fundraiser, annually raises $100,000 - nearly one-third of the center’s yearly budget.

Marc Lamont Hill, who previously spoke at the 2018 MLK Breakfast, will present “And How Are the Children … Now?” “And how are the children?” is a traditional greeting passed amongst the Masai in Kenya. The greeting acknowledges the high value of children and their wellbeing, and it acts as a measure of how the community and society is faring. The goal is to always be able to answer the greeting with “All the children are well.” Hill will speak about how people can collectively work to build a better community and world, one where they can say, “All the children are well.”

A Philadelphia native, Hill is currently the host of BET News and a political contributor for CNN. He has received numerous awards from the National Association of Black Journalists, GLAAD, and the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. He is the Steve Charles Professor of Media, Cities, and Solutions at Temple University. Prior to that, he held positions at Columbia University and Morehouse College. He is a founding

board member of the nonprofit organization My5th, as well as a board member and organizer of the Philadelphia Student Union. Hill also works closely with the ACLU Drug Reform Project, focusing on drug informant policy. He received his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, and he is the author or co-author of several books.

New this year, three ticket

options will be available in the spirit of access and inclusion. These ticket options are an in-person ticket, a discounted livestream ticket, and a pay-what-you-will in-person ticket.

To purchase tickets, visit www.caplanc.org/MLK or contact Kristy Aurand at kaurand@caplanc.org or 717-299-7388, ext. 3032. Sponsorships are also available; for details, contact Aurand.

Church Posts Holiday Services, Sermon Series

First United Methodist Church of Ephrata, 68 N. Church St., will host Christmas Eve services on Saturday, Dec. 24. A contemporary family service will begin at 5 p.m., and a traditional candlelight service will take place at 7 p.m. Services will also be held on Christmas Day, Sunday, Dec. 25, at 10 a.m. and on New Year’s Day, Sunday, Jan. 1, 2023, at 10 a.m. The church can be reached at 717-738-2465.

A sermon series titled “Gospel According to John: I Am …” will be presented weekly from Jan. 1 through Sunday, Feb. 5, 2023. Every Sunday, the church holds a

traditional service at 8:30 a.m. and a contemporary service at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Choi will speak about who Jesus is today and how people can know Jesus and follow Him.

In the Early Church, when the Gospel had reached different parts of the Roman Empire, people from different cultures and religions accepted and interpreted Jesus differently. To address the discrepancies, John the Apostle wrote another book to answer the question “Who is Jesus?” with the seven “I am” statements.

For more information about the sermon series, call 717-626-1939.

Medical Heritage Museum Opens

The Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum recently opened its first public-facing location in 40 years at 410 N. Lime St., Lancaster. The museum opened with an event on Dec. 10.

Admission will be free throughout December.

the environment; develop educational materials; organize and conduct educational events, stream cleanups, and invasive plant removal projects; design and maintain demonstration gardens; conduct stream monitoring projects and research; research and write newsletters and online articles; and partner with municipal officials on projects, such as bioswales, rain gardens, native meadows, and other

green stormwater management solutions.

The event is offered at no charge to participants. Registration is required to receive the link to access the webinar. Registrants will also receive access to the webinar recording. Lancaster Band Wins Album Of The Year

On Oct. 22, Lancaster-based music group The Jess Zimmerman Band won the Album of the Year award at the eighth annual Josie Music Awards in Nashville. The band’s album “Breathe” garnered the award in the country rock and Southern rock category, and the band itself was also nominated for awards in four other categories: Music Video of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Fan’s Choice Award and Rock Vocalist of the Year. The Jess Zimmerman Band comprises frontwoman Jess Heitz, guitarist Joe Barszowski, bassist John Knobler and drummer Joe Mattis, and has concerts scheduled for the spring in Holtwood and Millersville.

The awards ceremony was hosted at the Grand Ole Opry, a nationally known American country music venue that has been in operation for almost a century. “I was blown away that we were nominated in five categories,” Heitz said. “To win Album of the Year in such an iconic place was incredible.”

Each year, the Josie Music Awards recognize specifically independent artists, meaning they aren’t signed to a record label, so they handle things like recording, producing, touring and marketing themselves. Although well-traveled in the Lancaster and greater Pennsylvania country music scene, The Jess Zimmerman Band’s success as an independent group has also taken it across the East Coast,

Midwest and South.

“When it comes to ‘Breathe,’ the album itself was a monumental step for us as a band,” Heitz said. “It was also a big step for me emotionally and physically.” The Jess Zimmerman Band independently released “Breathe” in May 2021, following a flurry of recording sessions. The band members stayed in Nashville for five days, during which they recorded and mixed each of the 11 songs on the record. “It was a lot of work from start to finish. Sometimes we would be at the studio from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. working on these songs,” Heitz said. “Breathe” is The Jess Zimmerman Band’s first full-length album.

Heitz grew up on a dairy farm in Ephrata and currently lives in Mount Joy with her husband. Her musical career began at a young age; she would perform at local fairs, talent shows, church services and school events growing up. “Everyone has a dream when it comes to music, but if

I were able to go back and tell my younger self that it would be flourishing, I don’t think she’d believe me,” said Heitz.

The Jess Zimmerman Band has multiple shows in Lancaster approaching after the new year: on Friday, Jan. 13, the group will perform at Phantom Power, 121 W. Frederick St., Millersville; on Friday, Feb. 10, it will take the stage at Mickey’s Black Box, 101 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz; and on Friday, March 24, it will perform at Southern Lancaster County Farmer-Sportsmen’s Association, 573 Hilldale Road, Holtwood. “There’s an amazing music scene in central Pennsylvania, and we hope to connect with people all over, too,” Heitz said. “Our biggest goal is to reach and impact people in whatever way we can. That’s what ‘Breathe’ was for me.”

Church Unveils Art Installation

First Presbyterian Church Lancaster, 140 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will display artworks by Dorothy Thayne through Tuesday, Jan. 3, as part of the installation “Art of the Icon: Process as Prayer.”

First Presbyterian Church Lancaster is committed to creating beautiful and original expressions of worship centered in Christ throughout the year and in a variety of ways. Over the years, art has become one of the many focuses of the church to help convey its members’ faith and connect with the greater Lancaster city community. That tradition continues with the current art installation.

Thayne, a Lancaster County artist and iconographer, is displaying more than a dozen icons showcasing her 30 years of focusing on the art of iconography. An icon is a work of art painted in a prayerful manner using a symbolic visual language and images that originate in early church tradition. According to

Thayne, an icon is not simply a holy picture; it illustrates a spiritual reality, not a photographic reality. The word “iconography” comes from “graphia,” referring to the acts of writing and painting - both word and image, and “icon,” which comes from the Greek word “eikon” and means “image.”

Subtle artistic nuances create

styles that differentiate the icons of one culture or time period from another. Thayne’s icons, which are painted in the Byzantine style, are a source of sacred art for both the Western and Eastern Catholic churches.

Materials of the highest quality are used to create an icon: pure gold leaf; natural pigments from the Earth, bound with the yolk of an egg; and a base of wood covered with a gesso of chalk and marble dust. The paint is then applied in many layers resulting in a translucency that gives the icon the quality of inner light. The process of creating an icon has many steps, and it may take Thayne months, if not years, to create a piece.

The community is invited to visit First Presbyterian Church Lancaster during open hours to view the installation. For more information, visit www.fpclancasterpa.org or call 717-394-6854.
