In Proverbs 31, the writer describes a woman of noble character. To many women studying the text, the characteristics of this woman may seem daunting. “A lot of women who read Proverbs 31 … walk away with a list of things to do,” said Lancaster County resident Mari Hernandez-Tuten, author of “Proverbs 31 in 5 Minutes a Day Bible Study,” which was released in early September. Hernandez-Tuten wanted to give women a different perspective on the virtues of the Proverbs 31 woman. “This woman (in Proverbs 31) is doing all these things, but I don’t think it’s just a day in her life. I think these are seasons throughout her life,” noted Hernandez-Tuten. “You see her being productive, and you see her trusting God in the midst of all sorts of situations.” One goal of the book was to show women that they can make significant contributions. “This whole theme of having influence as

anything I had ever imagined,” Hernandez-Tuten set about writing with three school-age sons attending school virtually and her husband teaching school virtually. “The concentration part was really hard,” she remembered. Eventually, she asked her husband to take the boys on a brief camping trip so she could have the solitude she needed to meet her deadlines, and she completed the book in about four months. About a month after the book was published, Hernandez-Tuten’s father died. To honor her father’s legacy, Hernandez-Tuten held a “Buy a Book, Donate a Book!” event on Nov. 9 at The Mustard Seed Boutique in Lititz. For each one of her books that was sold that day, Hernandez-Tuten donated a book to a local women’s shelter to help fulfill her passion to help women who have been abused. Readers may find writings by Hernandez-Tuten at www.inspiredbyfamilymag.com.

When 4- and 5-year-olds attending the New Holland Early Learning Center (NHELC) were asked about their experiences tending and harvesting the Sprouts for Peace Garden, which is located on the New Holland Mennonite Church campus along with NHELC, their answers were colorful. Francisco, who is 5, said that he enjoyed both picking corn and picking bugs off potatoes. Meara, age 4, said she picked tomatoes,
cucumbers, and corn, but she noted that she enjoyed chasing lightning bugs each Tuesday evening during the weekly watering and weeding. Andrew, also age 4, recalled eating the fresh cherry tomatoes. The growing season of 2020 was the second for the garden at the church, 18 Western Ave., New Holland. The season saw the garden expand to two plots - one near the church parking lot and the other at the far end of the church’s property - which effectively doubled the size

In light of the new mandates related to COVID-19, the Lancaster City Alliance has suggested several ways that community members can help local businesses. Community members may order takeout or delivery from an area restaurant or enjoy a meal at an outdoor venue. People may find lists of restaurants and stay up-to-date on how they have adapted to keep customers safe by visiting www. lancastercityrestaurantweek.com, visiting www.visitlancastercity.com and clicking on “Wine & Dine,” or visiting www.figlancaster.com and clicking on “Articles” and then “Support Lancaster City Restaurants.” Families might consider ordering takeout and eating their food in the car while driving around and
looking at Christmas lights. People might purchase gift cards or local swag to give as holiday gifts. Shopping guides are available by visiting www.visitlancastercity.com and clicking on “Shopping,” visiting www.figlancaster.com and selecting “Fig 2020 Local Gift Guide,” and visiting www.lancindieretail.com. People might also buy treats and make a social distanced delivery to friends. The Lancaster City Alliance encourages customers supporting local businesses to share about it on social media and ask others to do the same. People who know owners of small businesses may ask them how supporters can help. For more information about the Lancaster City Alliance, readers may visit www.lancastercityalliance.org.

Ranck-Hower recalled that the Tuesday gatherings often ended with watermelon snacks and in the fall with fellowship around a bonfire. Engaging NHELC students to help in the garden was not difficult. “The cherry tomatoes were a big pull, said Hurst. When Marburger noted that cherry tomatoes had not been prevalent among the donations from the garden, Ranck-Hower stated that the majority had fed NHELC garden helpers. Hurst planted 200 pounds of potatoes and 300 sweet potato plants, and Marburger noted that an abundance of sweet potatoes had fed CrossNet clients, including families that are enrolled in the Power Packs Project. She added that the 10-pound cabbages were so large, she cut them in half for smaller families. About 12,749 pounds of vegetables were harvested. “I targeted for 12,000 pounds, recalled Hurst. Marburger reported that more than 7,000 pounds of produce from the garden came to CrossNet. Readers who would like to know more about the Sprouts for Peace Garden may visit www.newhollandmc.org.

weekend meals so their children return to school on Mondays fed and ready to learn. Funds from the Giant Company will help provide holiday dinners to more than 1,000 families served by the organization. Other nonprofit organizations that received donations were Autism Wings in Plymouth Meeting, Big Heart Harvest in Douglasville, Capital Area Head Start in Harrisburg, Carlisle Area Family Life Center and Shiremanstown Fire Department. The Giant Company’s Giving Tuesday donation continues the company’s long-standing tradition of giving back during the holiday season. In November, the company donated a record-breaking 10,000 turkeys to 28 partner food banks located across its footprint in time for Thanksgiving. Team members from Giant and Martin’s also contributed 500 volunteer hours to help pack boxes and restock shelves in advance of the holiday season. The Giant Company hosted an in-store food drive to further stock the shelves of community hunger relief organizations. Established in 2012, Giving Tuesday falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on holiday and end-of-year giving.
