There are many quotes exhorting people to be part of something bigger than themselves. Richmond Wandera, a native of Kampala, Uganda, has lived them. On Dec. 14, 2018, Wandera graduated from Lancaster Bible College (LBC) with a Doctor of Philosophy in leadership, with the goal of taking what he has learned back to his home country to spread knowledge among pastors there. “Uganda has 40 million people and 85,000 pastors, but 70 percent of (the pastors have) had no training,” said Wandera. “(Yet) they are forced to explain complex theology.” Wandera added that theological information is not easily See LBC Student pg 3

Celebratory Event from pg 1
The races are set to begin at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Jan. 20, Feb. 17, and March 17, on the campus of Elizabethtown College. Each of the three races will follow the same rolling route through a neighboring development and around the college campus. Wells noted that the Idiots Option 10K, which was added for the first time in 2017, was a success and will be available again for those looking to complete a longer distance by covering the 5K course twice. The name sparked from a conversation Wells had in the past with two participants: One suggested the addition of a 10K, while the other remarked, “What kind of idiot would do that?” Interested individuals may register for the 5K or 10K series at www.appliedracemgmt.com/even ts. Those who register for the series by the first race will receive a custom long-sleeve tech shirt. On-site registration will also be available prior to each race. Race packet pickup will take place on race days between noon and 1:45 p.m. in the Bucher Meetinghouse at Elizabethtown College. Signage will be posted directing participants to the area. Following each race, hot homemade soup will be served. Awards will be presented at approximately 3:15 p.m. Participants will also be entered to win door prize giveaways. Individual event awards will be bestowed upon the overall male and female winners, the masters male and female winners, and the first-, second- and thirdplace male and female winners for each five-year age group. presented at a ceremony at Funk Brewing, 28 S. Market St., Elizabethtown, on March 17, will include prize money for the overall male and female winners and the masters male and female winners. Additional prizes will be distributed to the top three male and female finishers in each age group. Special discounts will be available at Funk Brewing to Frozen Foot participants following each race. Through the decades, Wells said that the number of runners has fluctuated - perhaps due to the influx of 5K events in recent years. The inaugural Frozen Foot series had 16 runners and later grew to more than 800 participants one year; however, in recent years Wells said the event has averaged about 375 participants. “I don’t know that any of us that worked on (Frozen Foot) in the beginning thought that it would be around this long,” said Wells. “It’s great. I’m happy that the race has been around that long.” A portion of the race proceeds benefits the Christ Church United Church of Christ mission fund to help people domestically and abroad. Wells said that the destination for this summer’s service project has not yet been finalized but will likely be somewhere within the United States. LBC Student from pg 1 The inspiration for the program had its roots in Wandera’s own story. The third of six children, Wandera shared that he and his family witnessed his father’s murder in 1990. “It changed our entire family,” said Wandera, whose family then moved to Naguru, a slum in Kampala. “It’s called a forgotten community. There is very little hope there,” said Wandera. In 1991, hope arrived in the form of sponsorship through Compassion International. Wandera and one of his sisters were sponsored and began attending the church through which that sponsorship was extended. Four years later, Wandera came to understand the Gospel. Noting that his family came from a traditional African background, Wandera said that the story of Joseph resonated with him. Later his sister and his mother made decisions for Christ as well. Eventually his whole family became part of the fold. Wandera finished high school in 2000, and in 2004 he graduated from Uganda Christian University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and began working
Lacto-Fermentation from pg 1 The Horn Farm Center, 4945 Horn Road, York, will offer Intro to Lacto-Fermentation on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Lacto-fermentation is the ancient art of preserving vegetables using salt. The use of salt in an anaerobic environment inhibits pathogenic bacterial growth and allows only the lactic acid bacteria to thrive, converting natural sugars of vegetables into tangy, sour flavor. Instructors Justina Wenger-Pfarr and Donna Volles are two seasoned fermentationists. The interactive workshop is geared for beginner fermenters and will begin with samples of some recent fermentations made by the facilitators as they discuss the health benefits of lacto-fermented foods. Attendees will learn both brining and salting methods of lacto-fermentation to begin making their own pickles, krauts, hot sauces, and kimchis. They will then have the opportunity to make a small-batch ferment of their choosing based on the produce and spices provided. Participants will leave not only with their ferment but knowledge to continue to experiment with fermentation throughout the upcoming growing season using all kinds of fresh seasonal produce. Attendees may bring any favorite kitchen implements, such as a knife, a mandoline, or a box grater. Included will be a quart jar, a pickling weight, various vegetables and spices with which to create a ferment, stepby-step instructions on brining and dry-salt-
ing techniques, and information on the health benefits of lacto-fermentation. There is a cost for the class, and registration may be completed at https://hornfarm center.org/lacto-fermentation/. For more
toward his certification with a goal of training accountants to do business ethically. He began teaching accounting, but he also felt a call to become a pastor. “I was deeply moved by change that happened in our home because of the Gospel,” said Wandera. With encouragement from his pastor, he began pastoring at the church, but one night a woman who had lost a 3year-old child to malaria asked him a question he could not answer. Distraught, Wandera returned to working in accounting. A discussion with Steve Wilson, a worker from Compassion International, brought him back to the ministry. He received the first Wesley K. Stafford scholarship to the Moody Bible Institute, with the goal of taking back what he learned to pastors in Africa. Wandera reached that goal only to find that many of the pastors needed leadership training as well as theological knowledge. That need led to him to LBC, where he began working toward his doctorate as a recipient of LBC’s Wesley K. Stafford Leadership Development Scholarship, established in 2013.

available. Wandera realized that a biblical solution to the problem existed. “Jesus identified a few leaders and went deep with (teaching) them and then sent them out to multiply themselves,” said Wandera. “My mantra is ‘Train one to reach many.’” This biblical solution led Wandera to found a nonprofit called Pastors Discipleship Network after completing a year at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in 2008. Pastors are now being trained through LBC’s blended program, which mixes online learning with regular visits to the campus. The program was introduced at LBC in 2016 following a visit to Uganda by LBC president Dr. Peter Teague. Wandera noted that pastors carefully selected for character, practice, and giftedness have been offered the opportunity to earn a Master of Arts in ministry. To date, 40 students have graduated. Twenty more are due to graduate in June. Each pastor is charged with sharing what he or she has learned with one pastor in Africa per year for the next five years.

GBC has hosted a Night to Shine for the past two years, and event coordinator Joell Ketcham said that GBC decided to try a new and larger location for 2019. The event will take place on Friday, Feb. 8, in the gymnasium at Manheim BIC, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. People age 14 and older with special needs are invited to attend and may register at https://gbclancaster.org/ night2shine by Friday, Jan. 25. Admission is free. “One of (Tebow’s) purposes in doing (Night to Shine) is to change the trajectory of how we think of Valentine’s Day,” explained Ketcham. In planning out the details, Ketcham’s goal is to make the experience as overthe-top and memorable as possible for each person who attends. “We have about 12 churches that partner with us now, and we try to knock it out of the park. I want it to be the kind of thing that when they walk in the door, it wows them,” shared Ketcham. “I want them to feel that we took time and really thought about them, because they deserve it.” Guests will be greeted by what Ketcham described as friendly paparazzi - ranging from photographers to local mascots such as Cylo - surrounding a red carpet entrance. Formal doormen will direct attendees to a registration area where they will meet a volunteer buddy whom they will be

Following a seated formal dinner, guests will have the chance to dance, sing karaoke, pose in a photo booth, play cornhole, win door prizes, get treats from the ice cream parlor and coffee station, and take limousine rides. “The limos are a big hit,” noted Ketcham. Each ride is a short loop, but organizers pull out all the stops for guests, offering them sparkling cider and other goodies to add to the thrill. Upon their return to the building, guests receive a crown and sash as their name is announced on the red carpet. Each guest will receive a printed photo of themself on the red carpet and a goodie bag chock full of healthy snacks and other fun items donated by local businesses. A parent and caregiver respite lounge will also be provided. Night to Shine events will be hosted by approximately 700 churches around the world on the same date, and Ketcham emphasized that everything is made possible through donations and volunteer efforts. “We get a lot of thank-yous from the parents and guests,” Ketcham shared. “Some have said that this is the first time their child has gotten to do something normal that was just for them. A lot of people just talk about the unconditional love that they felt.” Volunteers are needed for the Night to Shine event, and interested individuals may sign up at https://gbclancaster.org/night2 shine, where they will have the option to select their top three choices for ways to serve. Options vary from helping with setup, parking, registration, coat check, food preparation or service, beverage stations, and cleanup and teardown to providing assistance with karaoke, the dance floor, the red carpet, first aid, and more.
Individuals age 16 and older are welcome to sign up to serve as buddies for guests. Financial donations are also needed, along with donations of items for goodie bags and door prizes. For more information on how to help or

In all of the years that Marcie Bahn has organized the annual Wreaths Across America ceremony at Mount Tunnel Cemetery in Elizabethtown, there were never quite enough wreaths donated to place on all 800 of the veteran graves - until this year. “This is our seventh year doing it here, and we have one for every veteran buried here,” shared Bahn with the small crowd gathered under gray, drizzling skies at the cemetery on Dec. 15. National Wreaths Across America Day takes place annually on the second or third Saturday of December at cemeteries throughout the United States, as communities host ceremonies and volunteers lay wreaths on veteran gravesites to remember the fallen and honor those who have served their country. According to www.wreaths acrossamerica.org, the wreathlaying ceremonies take place at
more than 1,400 locations across the United States and also abroad. The nonprofit organization that coordinates the yearly effort was founded by Morrill Worcester, who, upon realizing his Maine-based wreath business had a surplus of wreaths as the 1992 holiday season was winding down, arranged to have the wreaths placed in Arlington National Cemetery in one of the older sections that had reportedly been receiving fewer visitors as time went on. That annual wreath tribute continued quietly until 2005, when a photo of the wreaths at Arlington drew national attention online and sparked requests from people looking to place wreaths at the cemeteries in their hometowns, too. Bahn learned about Wreaths Across America when she was searching for service projects for youth groups in Elizabethtown. “The (ceremony) at Indiantown Gap (National Cemetery) came to
Airport Unveils New Sculpture The Lancaster Airport Authority dedicated and unveiled the sculpture “We Care to Dream” at a ceremony on Nov. 14 at the Lancaster Airport. Created by Patrick Mack of Indianapolis and located in front of the Lancaster Airport Terminal, the perma-
nently mounted polished stainless steel sculpture represents humanity’s love of flight. During a private ceremony, the sculpture was dedicated in memory of Marvin E. Miller Jr., past Pennsylvania legislator, Lancaster businessman, and member of the Authority’s board of directors. For nearly 23 years, Miller gave his time and talents to the airport’s growth and success. He served on the Authority board, most notably as chairman, from 1998 until his death in 2016. Along with Miller’s widow, judge Margaret C. Miller, family, friends and business associates attended the ceremony.
The Lancaster Airport Authority recently unveiled its new sculpture, “We Care to Dream.” Patrick Mack created the piece.
my attention,” she recalled. Mount Tunnel Cemetery, located at 1058 S. Market St., Elizabethtown, is the final resting place for 800 veterans who served in conflicts dating back to the Revolutionary War. Businesses, organizations, and individuals may sponsor wreaths prior to the annual dedication ceremony at www.wreathsacrossamerica.org. Members of Cub Scout Pack 85 from Elizabethtown joined the group of volunteers at Mount Tunnel. “This was our first year here,” said assistant Cubmaster Matt Reigner. “We used to do it at Indiantown Gap, but now that we know about (this location), this will be an annual thing for us.” Following a brief dedication ceremony, which was led by members of the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329 and included remarks from Mayor Chuck Mummert, the Scouts and volunteers followed Bahn’s instructions to walk gently as they scattered across the proper-
ty to lay fresh balsam wreaths. Volunteers were also encouraged to say the veteran’s name aloud when placing the wreath on the ground. “Every year it’s a different group (of volunteers) that turns out,” stated Bahn. “The children love to put wreaths on the grave markers, and it’s fun to see their excitement when they find (a veteran) they know or maybe one from the Revolutionary War.” “It’s a meaningful tradition, and it’s a way to support our veterans locally and across the United States and internationally at the same time,” said Bahn, noting that by the time the ceremony began at noon in Elizabethtown, wreaths had already been placed at sites like Arlington and Normandy. Volunteers and financial donations are needed for the annual Wreaths Across America ceremony at Mount Tunnel, and interested individuals may learn more about how to get involved at www.wreathsacrossamerica.org.

According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis after Friday, Jan. 4, near the tree drop-off site. County residents can participate in an environmentally friendly way to dispose of their Christmas trees by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster, between dawn and dusk through Thursday, Jan. 31. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action
