LBC To Present “Ruth” By Ann Mead Ash

When David Felty, executive producer, considered bringing the Sight and Sound Theatres original production of “Ruth” to the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) stage, he felt the show, based on one of only two books of the Bible dedicated to the story of a woman, should have a female perspective. With that in mind, he brought in Heather Grayberg to direct and choreograph, along with an all-female creative team that includes Leslie Talley and Gabrielle Hines as assistant directors, Kendra Bigley as music director, Katie Moser as set designer, and women overseeing costumes and props. “Ruth” will be staged on Fridays, Jan. 24 and 31, at 7 p.m.; on Saturdays, Jan. 25 and Feb. 1, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and on Sundays, Jan. 26 and Feb. 2, at

2 p.m. All shows will be held in the Good Shepherd Chapel at LBC, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. Kristin Hurdleston and Delaney Bigley are double cast in the titular role, and Ruth’s mother-in-law, Naomi, is played by Samantha Ingram. The pair find themselves poor widows when Naomi’s husband, Elimelech, played by Richard Thomas, dies and her sons are killed. With only faith in God and each other, Naomi and Ruth set off on a journey that leads to a lesson about finding God’s plans when one’s own have failed. But “Ruth” is also a love story about the kinsman Boaz, played by Bryson Buffington, who rescues the women from their plight when he falls in love with the title character. Brianna Brady will serve as the narrator, an otherworldly being who will at one point interact with the characters.

Preparing for their roles in the Lancaster Bible College production of “Ruth” are (from left) Kayla Valesquez, understudy for the role of Naomi; Samantha Ingram, who will play Naomi; and Delaney Bigley, who is alternating with Kristin Hurdleston in the role of Ruth. The show will play in the college’s Good Shepherd Chapel on weekends from Jan. 24 through Feb. 2. While Grayberg is excited about the production, being the first to stage the show outside Sight and Sound comes with challenges. “It feels like we are workshopping a brand-new show,” she said, noting that the stage at the Good

Shepherd Chapel is somewhat smaller than the one at Sight and Sound. “We have to make the show attainable, so the text and staging can be tricky as far as conveying the story, but I think it will feel more intimate,” said Grayberg. See “Ruth” pg 4

Jessica Kinsey, a board member with GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster, wants families with children who have Down syndrome and other disabilities to know that a support system is available. “I would have loved to have had this once we had our prenatal diagnosis,” said Kinsey. “We want to educate (the community by providing) more information (for families).” A huge step in raising awareness of the positive impact people with Down syndrome and other disabilities can have will take place on Saturday, Jan. 11, when GiGi’s Playhouse, a Down Syndrome Achievement Center, will open at 2503 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. An open house to celebrate the grand opening will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Although the open house is a drop-in event, Jen Voshell, who is also a board member, said that specific activities are planned. Self-guided tours of the facility, which includes a large room, two small rooms, a kitchen, and a family room, will be available from 1 to 2 p.m. At 2 p.m., Nancy Gianni, who founded GiGi’s Playhouse in 2002 and named it for her daughter GiGi, will speak, as will GiGi’s Playhouse president Kim King. “Some of our families will talk about what GiGi’s Lancaster means to them,” said Voshell. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held, and refreshments will be served. Gianni, who founded GiGi’s in Chicago, was inspired to start the program after holding a support group meeting for families of children with Down syndrome in a room made available in a local hospital. “She took it upon herself to create GiGi’s Playhouse,” said Voshell. “She became well known and was able to help other communities open their own playhouses.” GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster is the 47th playhouse to open in the United States. “GiGi’s differs because everything we offer is free to families,” said Kinsey, who listed therapeutic services, such as speech, physical, occupational, and social services among the playhouse’s offerings. “All family members are welcome and encouraged to stay,” she stated, adding, “It’s not therapy just for our individuals with Down syndrome, it’s (a model) for what you can do in-home.” Kinsey also noted that GiGi’s Playhouse is inclusive. “It’s not just for individuals with Down syndrome,” she said. Kinsey noted that support is available

for individuals of all ages. “GiGi’s is a lifetime commitment to families. We help from prenatal diagnosis through adulthood,” she explained. “There will be fitness classes,” stated Kinsey. The center hopes to offer young adults and adults a program called GiGi University to provide career training or life skills. The classes encourage education, socialization, and ways to help individuals be more independent. Four types of classes are scheduled for the next several months at GiGi’s. “Classes will consist of LMNOP, which stands for Language, Music, and Our Peeps,” said Voshell, who noted that the class, which is for children age 3 and under, will focus on developing language and social skills through play. Destination Discovery will be a class for people of all ages that focuses on social skills, physical skills, and school skills, such as colors. Fantastic Friends is a program for individuals age 18 and up. “It’s a time to hang out and build relationships,” said Voshell. GiGi Fit is a young adult exercise and healthy lifestyle class. Christine Hewitt said that GiGi’s grew out of a group called Celebrate Down Syndrome, which had been in existence in Lancaster for many years. The group decided to change the name to GiGi’s Playhouse in 2016. Since that time, the organization has been hosting galas, fundraisers, and get-togethers, such as Pancakes and Pajamas, which is held near the holidays, to raise funds to open the playhouse. Postal Service Shares Snow Removal Tips Winter is in full swing in Pennsylvania, accompanied by freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. The U.S. Postal Service asks customers to help letter carriers deliver mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, porches, street approach, and mailboxes. Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. To do their part to keep letter carriers safe and to help them continue to offer consistent delivery service, customers should heed the following tips: All customers should keep their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. This includes the approach to and exit from the area, as well as sufficient space on both sides of curbside mailboxes. Customers receiving door delivery should ensure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside or rural delivery should remove snow piles, such as those left by snow plows, to keep access to their mailboxes clear for See Postal Service pg 8

“Theater is a vehicle for us to feel emotions and learn things and discover things within ourselves,” noted Grayberg. To be sure “Ruth” fills these roles for the audience, Grayberg is focusing on the heart of the tale. “This bond between these two women is beautiful,” she said. “We are stripping the story down and bringing out the human aspect,” she said. “Ruth was used by God to facilitate (His plan).” From a musical perspective, Grayberg noted there will be significant changes. “This is the first time a Sight and Sound show will be done with a live orchestra,” she said, noting that LBC’s Dr. Bruce Gerlach listened to a recording of the show and wrote the score for a 26-piece orchestra. Songs that Grayberg believes will stand out include “I Will Go Where You Go,” and “By My Side,” which are sung by Ruth and Naomi together. She also point-

pieces of glass were carefully set in place, with the final image depicting the efficacious signs of the Catholic Church. The efficacious signs represent the seven sacraments that are believed to be the lifeforce of God, reaching down and offering the gift of grace, said school principal Christine McLean. “The mosaic art form signifies that God can transform brokenness into beauty. Now that is worth celebrating,” she added. About 50 people, including students in second, seventh, and eighth grades, attended the blessing of the mosaic. Students’ parents also attended, and McLean reported that one parent, visibly moved by the artwork, said, “As soon as you come into our parish school and see this mosaic hit you, you see our identity. God is a merciful God who wants to affect our lives in a personal and powerful way.”

Hemlick was also touched by the event and expressed her gratitude for the support of the school community. “This really was a highlight of my life’s work, but it also was a team effort from the students and families; our pastor, Father Hahn; Principal McLean; and so many others,” she said. Open houses in January will give members of the public the opportunity to view the mosaic and learn about the school, which offers primary education through eighth grade. Families considering enrollment for their children are invited to attend an open house on Sunday, Jan. 26, from noon to 2 p.m. or on Tuesday, Jan. 28, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. or from 6:15 to 8 p.m. A complimentary meal will be served during each session. Readers are asked to register their plan to attend by emailing Alan Schwartz at development@stleos.org. ed to a solo by Boaz called “Taking Your Chances.” As a choreographer, Grayberg said that there will be several songs that will include ensemble celebratory dances. “There’s a (number where) they enter the Temple of Chemosh, a god of the Moabites, with live percussion and extravagant dancing,” she said. As she deals with the challenges of bringing a big show to a smaller stage, Grayberg wants audiences to focus on the message of the show. “I hope audiences see this as a story of redemption and faithfulness and see that God works things out for good,” she said. Grayberg also lauded the cast members, noting that the students feel honored and thankful to play the roles. “I hope (audience members) see the truthfulness of the actors,” she said. Tickets to the show may be purchased at www.lbc.edu/events. Readers who have questions may call 717-560-8241.

letter carriers. Customers should keep in mind that painted porches and steps are particularly hazardous. While salting or rubber-backed mats help make them less slippery, customers should still clear the snow before a letter carrier arrives with the mail. In hazardous situations when delivery is suspended, customers should contact local postal officials to discuss ways to eliminate the hazard. Residents and businesses with blue collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice as well. In addition to endangering the safety of the carrier, injuries to a letter carrier - or any visitor to a home can result in costly liabilities to homeowners.
