Whenshe was in ninth grade at Columbia High School, Cindy Beaston watched the movie “Gettysburg” as part of a class assignment. Viewing the film set her on a trajectory that would influence the rest of her life.
“My mom and I rented the movie from Blockbuster, and I watched it over and over for a week straight,”
Beaston recalled, noting that the assignment required her to memorize the names of characters. While viewing the film, she particularly became interested in the story of Confederate Gen. James Longstreet. “I needed to know more,” Beaston said.
Since then, Beaston has become a Civil War buff, and she’ll present two lectures this month, showcasing her knowledge of the war. She
will speak about “U.S. Grant: Bulldog of the Union Army” at Hempfield recCenter, 950 Church St., Landisville, on Thursday, Jan. 26, and she’ll discuss “Sallie Ann: A Very Special Soldier” at Columbia Public Library, 24 S. Sixth St., on Monday, Jan. 30. Both lectures will begin at 6 p.m.
For the Grant lecture, Beaston will delve into the life of the man who became the 18th president of the
United States. “Everybody’s heard the name Ulysses S. Grant, but everyone doesn’t know who he really was,” she said. Her talk will cover his cadet days at West Point, the poverty he experienced after his achievements in the Mexican-American War and his rise to fame in the Civil War.
At the library, Beaston will share the accomplishments of Sallie Ann, a brindle bull terrier who played an important role with the 11th Pennsylvania infantry. “She went into every battle,” Beaston stated. “She knew the calls, knew the drills.”
Beaston will bring her own brindle bull terrier, appropriately named Sallie Ann, to the talk.
Beaston works as a lifeguard and swim instructor at Hempfield Rec, but her free time is spent fulfilling her passion for history. She joined the Civil War Roundtable at Lititz Public Library, but when it disbanded, she started her own group in Columbia. The Gen. Welsh Post 118 Roundtable is named for a Columbia general and meets monthly at the Columbia Public Library. Beaston has presented numerous lectures on Columbia’s Civil War soldiers, and she is in the process of writing a historical fiction book about these heroes.
A few years ago, Beaston got to meet the actor Tom Berenger, who portrayed Gen. Longstreet in “Gettysburg.” She took the opportunity to tease him a bit about her passion, telling him, “I’m a Civil War historian, and it’s all your fault.”
In all seriousness, Beaston hopes her presentations will help people remember an important time in our country’s past. “I can see these events and these people in my mind, and I try to get people to imagine what it was like,” she said. “I feel like I have formed relationships with these soldiers, and I want to honor them.”
For the Hempfield Rec lecture, reservations are requested by calling 717-898-3102. For the lecture at the Columbia Public Library, reservations are not needed.

Winter is the perfect time to get outside and take a walk among the trees, said Calyx Liddick, clinical herbalist and ethnobotanist. She will lead the “Winter Plant and Tree ID” program at the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education, 4945 Horn Road, York, on Saturday, Jan. 28, from 1 to 4 p.m.
“Winter botany is intimidating to some, but it’s also a nice time to pare down and focus on the shapes and textures of things we tend to ignore in the growing seasons, like barks and twigs,” Liddick remarked. “So, while it is a challenge, there’s a lot less busyness going on overall, so we can slow down and really get in tune with what we’re seeing.”
Liddick said the program will help participants expand awareness and what she calls a “mental image reservoir,” an important tool for foragers. “The class will be plant ID-focused, but we’ll also be discussing the uses of some of these species,” she shared.

The program is perfect for beginners as well as experienced foragers, Liddick stated, adding, “Anyone is welcome - folks interested in foraging, herbalism, plant nerds, hikers, gardeners - really anyone who loves the outdoors or is looking for inspiration to get themselves out in the cold season.”
The main inspiration for the class is to expand plant identification beyond the warmer months, she said, and to get people outdoors in the winter. “If you don’t know how to ID from bark, twig and bud, that’s a long stretch of time over the winter that really limits your ability to decipher the species around you,” Liddick explained. “I also encourage students to spend time with plants outside of their optimal harvest season, and winter is a great time for that for most plants and trees.”
Liddick is the founding director of the Northern Appalachia School, based in Dillsburg. “We founded the school in early 2020,” she said, adding that she travels
all over the mid-Atlantic and Northeast to teach. “We offer workshops and consulting on botany, herbalism, land management, earth/survival skills, decolonization, etc. We also offer intensive programming every year on herbalism and ethnobotany.”
As Liddick explained, “ethnobotany” focuses on the relationship between plants and humans or how plants integrate into culture. “Everyone has relationships with plants, whether they realize it or not,” she commented. “Even in the herbal field, people may work with plants but never meet them in person or understand the impact of their use. Cultivating ethnobotanical relationships means coming to better awareness of how we utilize plants and how we can improve our relationship with them.”
She encourages anyone with an interest to sign up for the plant walk, noting, “This is a really great opportunity to come out and have fun with like-minded folks. There’s something pretty special about learning the trees, as
well. I love hiking through the forest and being surrounded by familiar friends. You’ll walk away from this class with the core skills you need to get started and a deeper appreciation for plants.”
Participants should dress appropriately for the outdoors and off-trail walking. To register for the program, visit https://hornfarmcenter.org and click on “Programs & Events.”

Employees at First Capital Federal Credit Union (FCU) supported two charitable causes in the community during the holiday season.
Employees took part in YWCA York’s Adopt-A-Family program. Each year, First Capital FCU is given a family, and employees pitch in to purchase specific items the family needs.
On Dec. 6, 2022, the gifts were delivered to the YMCA by Lisa Barshinger, community and business development manager; Tara Houser, vice president of marketing and business development; and Danielle Nelson, human resources manager.
The Adopt-A-Family program helps families that participate in YWCA York’s child care or youth programs or that are using the organization’s domestic violence and sexual assault services.
On Dec. 21, 2022, First Capital FCU staff members delivered donations to the Lehman Center for the Chil-
dren’s Aid Society. All items, from food and drinks to toys and crafts, were collected and donated by employees during December.
The Lehman Center offers emergency respite care for children from newborns
through 6 years of age in a 24-hour crisis nursery. It also provides child-centered creative art therapy, family advocate services and parent educational and support groups.
Lisa Day, First Capital FCU executive assistant, noted that the donations will be used to support children through art therapy or to help in the crisis nursery.
First Capital FCU, based in York, has more than 20,000 members. Founded in 1954 as S. Morgan Smith Credit Union, First Capital has merged and grown, and it works closely with 700 companies and organizations throughout York County and across the country. To learn more, visit www.firstcapitalfcu.com.

Grant Provides Truck To Power Packs Project
Using a targeted regional commitment to address food insecurity, the High Foundation has awarded Power Packs Project a grant in the amount of $55,000 for the purchase of a 20-foot box truck. Power Packs will now be able to transport more than five times more fresh produce and other nonperishable food to families in need in the community.
Power Packs executive director Brad Peterson explained that the new truck has the capacity to move up to five tons of food. In the past, he noted, Power Packs would need to make multiple trips to pick up or deliver food and sometimes had to turn down donations because of the lack of transportation. He added that the truck will go a long way to increase access to fresh, nutritious food for families in Power Packs’ 90 partner schools in Lancaster and Lebanon counties.
The truck will be operational immediately and will be
used in deliveries to Power Packs affiliates and partner schools as well as pickups from food donors and produce farmers. Last year, Power Packs provided nearly 400,000 healthy meals to families struggling with hunger. More
information about the organization is available at www.powerpacksproject.org.
The High Foundation’s mission is to improve the lives of people who live and work in Lancaster city, Lancaster County and other communi-
ties in which the High Companies provide economic investment and employment. In 2021, the High Foundation invested more than $3 million in local communities. For additional information, visit www.highfoundation.org.
Concert To Combine Music, Art, Technology
Millersville University’s Tell School of Music faculty will open the 2023 academic year with “Creatures: Some Mythical - Visual Meets Sonic Art” on Thursday, Jan. 19. The concert will take place at 7 p.m. in the Owen Salon at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster.
“Creatures: Some Mythical - Visual Meets Sonic Art” is a work created by adjunct professor Rusty Banks, composer and guitarist; Dan Zdilla, collage artist; and Andy Babin, projections designer. Banks conceived the work as an instrumental piece for classical guitar and
surround sound electronics. Each movement depicts a real or imaginary creature ever-present in Banks’ childhood conscience, such as the firefly, hellbender and doodle bug.
After viewing an exhibit of Zdilla’s collages in a local gallery, Banks approached him about creating works based on the creatures. The results are six works made entirely from pieces cut from copies of National Geographic Magazine. Zdilla deconstructed the original found imagery into scraps and bits of formal elements such as color, value and texture and then reassembled these elements into new images.
Babin, with tech support from 4-Wall Entertainment, created animations to be projected behind the performer using high-resolution scans of Zdilla’s works. The overall effect is like walking into the collages and exploring the landscape within. The music ranges from ambient to experimental to lyrical, with the sounds of the classical guitar sometimes altered and moving throughout the space, such as from the front of the audience to the back of the room.
Banks was born in Jasper, Ala., and lives in Lancaster. His compositions have been performed in Asia, Europe, Canada and Mexico, as well as throughout the U.S. Besides writing concert music for ballet, orchestra, wind ensemble and other acoustic ensembles, Banks designs pieces that use traditional performers, userend electronics and video within dynamic audio/video installations.
Zdilla is an artist, musician and teacher from Lancaster. He works in collage, creating naturalistic imagery that is at times representational or allegorical. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art education from Millersville University.
Known internationally as a lighting and video designer for live events, Ephrata native Babin has had his work included in performances by the Foo Fighters as well as The Weeknd’s halftime performance at the 2021 NFL championship.
Space is limited. To purchase tickets, visit www .artsmu.com, call the box office at 717-871-7600 or visit the box office at the Ware Center or in the Student Memorial Center on the campus of Millersville University.

Maintaining a healthy weight is believed to promote long-term health, while being overweight or obese can be a risk factor for various conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The World Health Organization reports that the worldwide obesity rate has tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight. Of these, more than 650 million were obese.
Health issues related to obesity are largely preventable. Losing weight in a healthy manner is essential for safe and lasting results, and individuals aspiring to lose weight may consider the following guidelines on what to do and what not to do.
DO add lean protein sources to your diet. Healthline indicates the body burns calories when digesting and metabolizing protein, so a high-protein diet can help to shed up to 80 to 100 calories per day. Protein also helps you to feel full, reducing the propensity to overeat.
DON’T get hung up on numbers early on. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that even modest weight loss of 5% to 10% of your total body weight can produce health benefits, such as improvements in blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure. Start small and gradually build up.
DO eat at least four servings of vegetables and three servings of fruits daily. Produce contains an abundance of vital nutrients and is often fiber-rich and low in calories, which helps you to feel full.
DON’T overlook the impact of beverages on weight loss. The calories in sugary beverages, including some all-natural fruit juices, can add up quickly. Stick to water, tea or other unsweetened beverages to help with weight loss.
DO get moving more. The Mayo Clinic notes that while it is possible to lose weight without exercise, getting moving can help burn the excess calories you can’t cut through diet alone. Exercise boosts metabolism, benefits mood and strengthens muscles and the cardiovascular system, as well.
DON’T go shopping while hungry. If you do, you may make impulse buys that compromise healthy eating plans.
DO speak with a doctor if you are comparing diet and exercise plans. A health care professional can indicate if a particular diet or fitness routine is acceptable for your age, goals and current health status.
DON’T forget to track eating. Most healthy diets
involve some sort of caloriecounting, whether they actually require you to document your intake or use a formula to attribute “points” or another measure related to what you eat. Writing or tracking the foods and beverages you consume will provide the most honest assessment of habits that could affect weight loss.
DO include foods you
enjoy. Completely restricting access to occasional treats may cause you to resent healthy eating, which can derail weight loss goals. The principle of moderation can apply to healthy weight loss as long as you account for the more calorie-dense foods. Losing weight in a healthy manner is achievable when you seek guidance and follow some time-tested techniques.
