At 82, Carolyn Livingston found herself learning something new when she joined the bell choir at St. John’s Herr Estate in Columbia, where she lives.
“It’s really neat to be able to say that I did this at my age,” she said. “I like that this is something to make my brain work. It’s fun, and we all have a lot of camaraderie.”
Her choirmates agreed, including 71-year-old Joni Leuck, who was particularly proud of the group’s first performance earlier this month. “I loved being able to walk out the door afterwards and
say, ‘I just did that!’” she stated.
The St. John’s Herr Estate bell choir is made up of seven members who range in age from 71 to 88. Some had musical experience when they joined the group, but others had never played an instrument and could not read music.
The bell choir is a project of the Rev. Dione Klepetka, Luthercare chaplain. “I was looking for a way to add more music to our worship service,” she said, noting that in her decade as chaplain, residents had inquired about starting a bell choir.
W hile she liked the idea, the reality of creating the choir was daunting. The bells are expensive - costing thousands of dollars - and St. John’s didn’t own any. Then Klepetka learned from a resident that St. John’s Lutheran Church in Columbia had bells, so she worked out a partnership with the church to borrow the instruments.
At the end of November, the retirement community residents held their first rehearsal. Practicing often proved difficult because they had to take the retirement
community’s bus to the church to use the bells. They also had to modify their plans to accommodate the needs of each player. Some couldn’t use both hands to play. Others couldn’t lift the heavier bells. Many of the members couldn’t even get the bells to make a sound.
“There was nothing more frustrating than lifting the bell to ring it and nothing happened,” said choir member Charles Scharnberger, noting that playing the instrument is harder than it looks.
Still, Klepetka and the choir persevered. “It was a steep learning curve for all of us,” said the chaplain, who serves as the choir’s director.

Bill Collister has a loud upstairs neighbor, and that’s just the way he wants it. The owner of Columbia Kettle Works has formed a partnership with Alison Liebgott, a local artist, to create Switchboard Studios, located on the second floor of the brewery at 40 N. Third St.
“ We are an artist collective and music event space,” Liebgott said. On any given day, there might be an art show happening, a yoga class, an open mic session or a live concert.
Since opening Columbia Kettle Works in 2014, Collister had hosted music on the second floor, but the pandemic put that on hold. “I was really groping around, looking f or something to do with the space,” he recalled. “I needed somebody to run the upstairs space who would be good at it. I have an interest in art and art in Columbia in particular, but running the day-today operation of the space wasn’t something I enjoyed.” He knew Liebgott mostly through Facebook, so he reached out to her in early 2022 to see if she had any interest in coming into the space.

initiatives, and the second grant will be for façade improvements.
Two $1,000 grants will be awarded in each category. Visit www.columbia-edc.org to apply. Grant applications opened on Jan. 2 and must be submitted by Wednesday, March 1. Decisions will be announced on Saturday, April 1.

As it turned out, she was looking to make a move, and the project came together quickly. Liebgott named the space Switchboard Studios & Gallery as a tribute to the telephone company that built the building and used to occupy the space.
Liebgott got to work making the space a welcoming place for art of all types. “We have an open call for art every Fourth Friday,” she said. “It’s a new gallery show each month, and it’s open to anyone. I wanted artists to have an outlet to get exposure and get their art seen.” There is no entry fee for artists, and the exhibit’s theme changes monthly. Local musicians often perform on opening night as well, which runs from 6 to 9 p.m.
Switchboard Studios is also home to seven artist workshop spaces, some of which house more than one artist. “All of the artists have different areas of expertise,” Collister noted. “It’s all different genres and mediums of art.”
The space is designed to allow visitors to peek into the studios and see works in progress, and many artists open their workshops to the
public during Fourth Friday events, Liebgott said.
Liebgott has also introduced Switchboard Soirees on the third Saturday of the month, each featuring a popup caterer and a live band. Paint-and-sip events are held regularly, along with yoga classes, poetry slams and comedy nights.
Collister, whose downstairs space regularly hosts trivia nights and vinyl record nights, said Switchboard Studios is the perfect complement to the Kettle Works.
“I feel like I’m creating
something up here, and I find it’s very rewarding to give these artists a place to work,” he noted.
Liebgott said the plans for Switchboard include continuing to expand the in-house offerings and promote all types of art. “We’re working on building the arts scene in the middle of town,” she stated.
“ We want to be the central art and music hub of Columbia.”

On Jan. 8, the choir pulled off a perfect rendition of “Silent Night” during a Sunday service at St. John’s Herr Estate. Asked if she was nervous performing in front of the crowd, choir member Emi Furness said no, joking, “Considering our audience, half of the people can’t hear us anyway.”
With the success of their first performance under their belts, the choir members are ready to tackle more music. The members are looking into purchasing tone chimes, a sort of modified handbell that’s less expensive and easier for seniors to play.
The bell choir has given the members a chance to make new friends and provide entertainment for their fellow residents. “We feel like we’ve accomplished something,” said choir member Anita Perrone. “We’ve been able to bring pleasure to other people.”
For Ruth Snyder and Janet Hilgert, the choir has offered an opportunity to indulge in their fondness for music while also providing a challenge. “I wasn’t sure I was coordinated enough to do this, but I’m really glad I tried,” Hilgert said. Added Snyder, “It’s been a lot of fun.”

Mulberry Art Studios, 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, invites all animal lovers and artists to share their submissions for its annual “We Love Our Pets” show. The show will exhibit during the month of May for National Pet Month, and submissions will be accepted until Monday, April 10.
Submissions may be artwork in any medium, such as photography, sculpture, painting or collage, and both professional and amateur artists of any age are encouraged to participate. All artwork is free to submit, and artists may submit any number of pieces.
Mulberry Art Studios will accept five to eight pieces of artwork per adult and three pieces per child.
The only criterion for submissions is that they depict an animal that would reasonably be kept as a pet, meaning that pieces that portray fictional and undomesticated animals will not be accepted. “It doesn’t have to be your pet specifically, but it has to be reasonable,” said Stephanie Kulfan,
gallery curator at Mulberry Art Studios. “It’s supposed to be a celebration of our love of animals and their significance in our lives.”
Mulberry Art Studios created “We Love Our Pets” five years ago, after gallery owner April Koppenhaver experienced two significant losses in her life. Koppenhaver’s husband, Charles Gaul, and her beagle mix, Milo, both passed away within a month of each other, and Koppenhaver and Kulfan wanted to create a way to honor them. They decided to start an annual community art show that would be centered around pets and that would benefit an animal rescue in the area. Each
year, Mulberry Art Studios supports the Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue by donating a portion of all art sales from the exhibit. On opening night, members of the Sebastian Foundation will have a table at the studio to accept donations, and several vendors will be present to sell pet-related items.
Last year, 162 pieces were accepted from over 100 artists from across the county. Many art teachers even incorporated the show into their curriculum, helping students to create artwork of their beloved pets to submit for the show.
Although the show began prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Kulfan believes that the struggles of the pandemic made many people realize how much they appreciated their animals. “Everyone was spending more time at home and realized how much having animal companions helped us,” said Kulfan. “People realized the comfort that animals give you.”
To submit a piece of artwork for the show, email Kulfan at Stephanie.Mulberry Art@gmail.com.
