Preserving history at Mount Pisgah BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Tucked away a few blocks south of Route 462 in Wrightsville, Mount Pisgah Cemetery holds history on its grounds. The cemetery marks the final resting place of 50 veterans, with a dozen dating back to the Civil War. Historically, it was a Black
cemetery, receiving the bodies that were forbidden burial in the neighboring white cemeteries during segregation. Growing up in the Wrightsville area, Phil Lehman knew of the cemetery along Mulberry Street, but he didn’t know much about it. “It was always called the ‘Black cemetery,’” he said. See History pg 4

“A little bite of heaven” BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“Our fastnachts are artisan. … They’re a special treat.” “We especially need help with rolling,” said Mahan. “There’s a certain way you roll, and if they are not rolled right, everything goes downhill.” She noted that no experience is necessary to volunteer. “There are people here who have been doing this for a long time, and they’ll teach volunteers,” she said. “It’s on-the-job training.” Shifts begin as early as 4 a.m., but help is particularly needed beginning about 7:30 or 8 a.m.
“You don’t have to commit for a long shift,” Mahan said. “You can come for an hour or two.” Committee member K aren Sahd oversees volunteers who come in the night before each bake to prep the dough using the 100-year-old recipe. Resch estimates that volunteers will make 6,300 dozen fastnachts this year - or more than 75,000. “That puts it in perspective, 75,000,” he said. “ You could fill a football stadium and give everyone a fastnacht.” Church members put together a history of the fastnacht bake in honor of the 100th anniversary, and Resch shared a little bit about the first bake. “In 1924, they had a fastnacht social,” he said. “It wasn’t a takeout sale. People came into the church, and there was dancing, and they raised $615 toward the construction of our new church, which broke ground in 1926. In today’s prices, that’s over $11,000.” See Fastnachts pg 2

A sweet honor BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Before they got married, Sara and Doug Taylor spent a lot of time in the kitchen baking cookies. “It was something fun to do while we were dating,” Sara recalled. “We wanted to perfect the chocolate chip cookie and create one that was huge, gooey and dense on the inside and crispy on the outside.” Their persistence in perfecting the recipe paid off, and the couple opened Taylor Chip in 2018. Now Sara has been named as one of the Forbes 30 under 30 in the “Food and
Drink” category for 2024. The award honors 30 people under the age of 30 in 20 industries. “I was shocked when I found out I’d been chosen,” Sara said. “I actually thought the email was spam.” Once she verified its validity, she was excited to travel to New York City, where she met with other winners. Although Sara qualified for the award - she’s 29 years old - Doug is 30 and just a little too old for the honor, but Sara emphasizes the business is a team effort. The couple began making their signature cookies as wedding favors, and the sweet treats See Taylor Chip pg 2

“O
ur fastnachts are unique,” said Betty Mahan, a member of the fastnacht committee at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Columbia. “These are handmade, not made by a machine, so no two are alike. It’s just like stars - each one is unique.” Holy Trinity will host its 100th annual fastnacht bake beginning Monday, Feb. 12. The sale will continue on Tuesday, Feb. 13, and on Mondays and Wednesdays for the next four weeks, wrapping up on Wednesday, March 13. “We call them ‘a little bite of heaven,’” said committee member Paul Resch. Added committee member Jim Knapp, “They’re so good. They are different than doughnuts because they are made with potato and yeast. We fry them in vegetable oil, and then we serve them by the dozen,
plain or glazed.” Over the several weeks of the sale, hundreds of volunteers will create the fastnachts, and the organizers are always looking for additional help.

Taylors have lofty long-term goals. “We want to open 40,000 locations in 100 countries,” Sara said, noting they want the business to be “Starbucks size” within the next 25 years. In the near future, they’re focused on something closer to home: opening a 20,000-square-foot creamery on Columbia Avenue near Mountville. “I’ve always had a love for ice cream, and my husband has had a love for cookies,” Sara said. In 2019, the couple started experimenting with ice cream recipes, and they hope to open the creamery in early 2025. When they’re not working, the Taylors, who live in Mount Joy, are focused on parenting their almost-2year-old daughter, Sage. Sara noted that starting a business and working together has been challenging but fun for the couple. “We jumped into this a year after we got married,” she said. “It has helped us grow so much as a couple. I feel like in just the first couple years of business, we’ve gained about 10 years of marriage experience, and we’ve really learned how to work together.”

Taylor Chip opened a small stand at the former L ancaster Marketplace on Fruitville Pike before expanding to its current four locations in L ancaster, York, Hershey and Intercourse. This year, the company expects to bring in more than $4 million in revenue. “It’s really crazy how it blew up,” said Sara, a 2013 graduate of Donegal High School. “What we’ve done with Taylor Chip is incredible and kind of unheard of.” The Taylors credit the success of their business to hard work and their p a r t ne rs h i p , b u t t h e y also say their faith in God has been instr umental in growing the company. They each quit their jobs in other industries to focus on Taylor Chip, trusting it was the right decision, Sara said. “Dougie and I are both Christians, and we felt like the idea for starting this business came from the Lord,” she explained. Dayspring Christian Academy founder Mike Myers (left) and headmaster Dan Stone at a previous Remember America event
one-minute broadcast presentations, which continue today, were born. “ The whole idea of Remember America radio was to introduce issues we’re facing today and then to look back at our founding generation to see how they would have addressed those things and show that they had a biblical worldview,” said Myers, who in 1999 published “It’s Time to Remember, America” with Horizon Books in Camp Hill. Becker recalled that in 2009, school representatives began researching the idea of holding a lecture series. “We started to meet with people in the community about bringing speakers in,” she reported, noting that the first course on the American Constitution attracted nearly 150 participants. Dayspring then connected with WallBuilders. “They are well recognized for having an understanding of the founding documents of our nation,” said Becker, who added that speaker Rick Green filled the Dayspring auditorium with more than 400 people
when he visited to speak in February of 2011. “That was the first Remember America Speaker Series,” she said. “It was another step to connect with the community and share this education. In April of 2011, Michael Reagan became the first series event speaker to appear at the Lancaster County Convention Center. A number of speakers, including Ben Carson and Eric Metaxas, have been part of the series since then. Tickets are available by calling the school at 717285-2000, ext. 205.

The Dayspring Christian Academy Remember America Speaker Series has its roots in Dayspring founder Mike Myers’ master’s degree studies when he first read about the Principle Approach. “I had never made such a connection to our founders and the principles that guided them in our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution,” recalled Myers, who in response made “restoring the biblical foundation of America” part of the mission of Dayspring, which was founded in 1987. Day s p r i n g C h r i s t i a n A cademy w ill hold its 2024 Remember America Speaker Series event on Saturday, April 20, at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. This year’s speaker will be Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the event will begin at 6 p.m. A limited number of gallery seats are still available for those who wish to hear the speaker at 7 p.m. Dayspring headmaster Dan Stone said that the
biblical mandate for education is “part of the fabric of who we are.” “We believe G o d g ave p a re n t s t h e authority to educate their children, and they partner with us,” he said, citing Psalm 78, Deuteronomy 6, and Ephesians 6, where God gives the command to teach children about Him. “The whole purpose of the passages is to teach their children so they can remember what the Lord has done,” Stone said. Dayspring events manager Lisa Becker explained that Dayspring is modeled after the education system in place at the country’s founding era. “That is the distinction of Principle Approach schools,” Myers explained. “Every subject is based on biblical truth that God spoke into existence.” Myers added that during the Colonial and founding periods of the nation, children were educated based on the prevailing biblical understanding of life. “The children learned to read from the Bible,” he stated, pointing out that the first G re a t A w a k e n i n g h a d occurred, and there was a sensitivity to the things of God and the impact of Christianity on the world. Myers also felt called to share this truth with the community outside the school. “There are things about our history that no one seems to know anymore,” he noted. “If we lose those biblical truths, we lose our nation.” Myers began holding study groups focused on primary documents. In 1992, he met with WDAC representatives and the Remember America
