A Teen Tells A Tale

with editor and writer Noah Lynch, who provided professional feedback.

Lillian

Rule said she has loved reading stories and listening to stories since she was a young child. Now the 15-year-old has written a tale of her own. “A Thousand Stars” was published in December and tells the story of a girl named Hopeful and a boy named Jimmy.

“It’s Christian historical fiction,” Lillian said of the novel. “It’s an allegory and it’s set in the 1800s.” Hopeful is on a journey to the Island of a Thousand Stars, and she meets Jimmy along the way. He’s trying to escape a difficult past and discover who he really is.

Lillian started working on the book three years ago at the age of 12. “I was scrolling through some old Google Docs, and I found this short story I had written,” she said. She worked on expanding the story, keeping the original title.

During the writing process, she relied on her dad, Justin, for help with the novel’s “big ideas,” she said, and she asked her mom, Whitney, to help with the editing. She also worked

Lillian said her novel is geared toward middle and high school readers, and it’s full of spiritual allegory. “I hope people will see the story in the book but also notice the little hidden meanings I put in it,” she said, giving an example of a prodigal son-type storyline that appears in the book.

Her favorite authors include C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Edith Nesbit and Louisa May Alcott, and Lillian said some of the best feedback she has received on the book has referenced her idols.

“People have said, ‘This reminds me of C.S. Lewis,’ and I love that,” she stated. “I want people to try to see if they can find the references to other authors in the book.”

When she’s not writing, Lillian, who is homeschooled, enjoys raising Holland Lop rabbits at the rabbitry at her Columbia home and spending time with her four younger siblings. She’s planning on participating in an upcoming musical with the Lancaster Academy for

the Performing Arts, and she loves to draw and paint. Some of her artwork served as inspiration for “A Thousand Stars.”

Of course, the budding author also continues to enjoy reading. “I love getting to know the characters in a book and exploring whole new worlds without having to leave my house,” she stated.

Dad Justin said he wasn’t surprised when Lillian told him she was working on a novel. “Lillian is a ‘decide to do something and I’m going to do it’ kind of person,” he remarked. “God has given her such immense talents, and she invests in doing them.”

Lillian said she hopes to write another book and offers this advice other budding authors: “Try to write something you enjoy. Don’t write for other people. You should write about something you love and characters you love.”

“A Thousand Stars” is available for sale on Amazon and at https://athousandstarsbook.com. It is also available to borrow from the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy.

If you’re looking for a fun and inexpensive way to spend Valentine’s Day weekend, look no further than Cupid, Cupcakes & Coffee. The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11, at Hellam Fire Company, 163 E. Market St., from 7 to 9 p.m. Proceeds will benefit York Youth Revolution (YYR), a community youth group based in Hellam, and Bartz Brigade, a York-based nonprofit that advocates for suicide awareness and prevention.

The festivities will include a dance, with music provided by the band Modern Age. “They play adult contemporary music, country and pop from the ’70s to now,” said Joe Bachman, youth leader of YYR. “They play songs you can slow dance to, and they play songs for fast dancing. They’re a lot of fun.”

Along with the band, the event will feature cupcakes, coffee and a variety of fun activities, Bachman said. “We’ll have a photo booth for people to get their picture taken,

Susquehanna Stage Will Hold Open House

Susquehanna Stage has a plethora of volunteer opportunities available to members of the community, and the nonprofit wants you to know about them. The organization will hold a drop-in open house called Coffee, Cookies & Committees on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the gallery space at the theater, 133 W. Market St., Marietta.

As Aiden Thomas, education committee chairperson and board member, explained, Susquehanna Stage used to hold a general membership meeting pre-COVID. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the theater has not offered an opportunity for the general public to learn more about the organization or volunteer. “We liked the idea of hosting something for people to ask questions and find out more about

all of the opportunities we have for people to volunteer and become a part of our organization,” Thomas said. “We have a variety of committees that meet monthly, and we thought that the beginning of a new year and season was a great time to get some new people involved.”

Volunteer opportunities include helping on the marketing committee, which creates graphics, runs social media accounts, designs print advertising and updates the organization’s website. The development committee leads fundraising, seeking out donors, advertisers and sponsors to fund the theater’s mission. Volunteers with the education committee develop year-round arts education programming for people of all ages, including summer camps, and the events committee manages building rentals, opening night receptions and Susquehanna Stage’s participation in community events throughout the year. Additional committees include the building committee and the capital planning committee.

“In addition to these volunteer opportunities, we have more showspecific opportunities that take less time commitment, including set building/construction, costumes and

tech/backstage,” Thomas stated. “We also have one-off volunteer opportunities through our Saturday workdays and front-of-house positions, including ushers, box office and concessions.”

Information on these opportunities will be available at the open house, and Thomas noted that while experience is appreciated, it is not required to get involved in any way.

At the open house, people will have the chance to meet with board members and committee chairs, ask questions and learn more about Susquehanna Stage, Thomas noted. She has been a volunteer with Susquehanna Stage since its inception in 2009 and said it’s a great place to get involved in the community. “Since that time, my parents, siblings and even my grandparents have taken part in some aspect of the organization,” she noted. “I have also had the opportunity to meet and work with so many amazing people of diverse ages and backgrounds, people that I probably never would have met otherwise.”

Refreshments will be available for guests to enjoy during the open house. For more information on Susquehanna Stage, visit www.susquehannastage.com.

Preschool Opens Registration

Trinity United Church of Christ (UCC) Preschool, 200 E. Market St., Hallam, will accept registrations for the 202324 school year. Classes are available for children ages 2 to 4, and there is also a prekindergarten program.

An open house will be held on Sunday, Feb. 5, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the preschool. Preschool staff will be available to

answer questions and offer tours of the school. In the event of inclement weather, the open house will take place on Sunday, Feb. 12.

A registration fee is due at the time of registration. Registrations will be accepted at the open house. For details, call Kim or Greg at 717-7573169. To learn more, visit www.trinity hallam.com and look under Preschool.

and we’re working it out that they’ll be able to take the photo home that night,” he commented. In past years, YYR has hosted the party preceded by a community dinner, but this year, the group members are focusing just on the party.

“This is our first year back doing this since the beginning of the pandemic, so we haven’t had this event since 2020,” Bachman noted. “We wanted to bring it back and it didn’t work out to do the dinner this year, but we still wanted something to bring the community together.”

Admission to the party is by freewill donation, and proceeds will support a mission trip YYR will take this summer.

“This year, we’re fortunate to have Wrightsville Group Workcamp right here in our community,” Bachman said. “We’ll be participating in that. We currently have 250 campers from all over the United States who will be coming to this.” Campers will complete repairs at local homes. “These are homes of people who are low-income or disabled or elderly, and they might need anything from painting to installing a handicap ramp,” he noted.

New this year, proceeds from the party will also support Bartz Brigade, an organization Bachman learned about through one of YYR’s leaders. “This is something that’s very close to us, because the topic of suicide comes up at our meetings,” Bachman said. “This is something that teenagers want to raise awareness about.”

YYR has been participating in the workcamp for 14 years, traveling up and down the East Coast and as far away as Indiana and Wisconsin. “The workcamp is the pinnacle of what we do as a youth group,” Bachman remarked. “Our mission is to serve others and get nothing in return, but in reality, we get more out of the residents we help than we could ever imagine. They are always smiling, always grateful for our help.”

YYR is open to high school and college-age students. The group meets on Sundays from 6 to 8 p.m. at Faith United Methodist Church, 126 E. Market St., Hellam. Reservations are requested for Cupid, Cupcakes & Coffee and may be made by leaving a message with a name and the number of people attending at 717-252-2539.

The York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) disposed of a total of 2.62 tons of unused and expired medication in 2022. The YCSWA disposed of substances collected via the secure Medication Return Box Program and community drug take-back events, along with illegal drugs delivered by law enforcement entities for destruction.

Currently, 20 York County police department locations partner with YCSWA to host medication return boxes in their police department lobbies. The Medication Return Box Program provides a secure disposal option for unwanted medications from residential sources at no cost to the public or to law enforcement agencies.

The secure medication return boxes work like a mailbox. Once medications are

deposited, they cannot be retrieved and are contained in a locked compartment accessible only by law enforcement. The heavy-duty green metal boxes bolt to the floor and wall. Law enforcement personnel maintain the boxes and secure medications that are received until they can be destroyed.

Medications collected in the boxes are delivered by law enforcement to YCSWA’s waste-to-energy facility, the York County Resource Recovery Center, for safe and complete destruction. YCSWA’s waste-to-energy facility is equipped with state-of-the-art combustion technology and air emission controls.

Residents interested in dropping medication at a return box location should remove their personal information from containers before

depositing them in boxes. Only residential prescription medications are accepted. Pharmacies, hospitals, and other commercial sources of medications are not eligible to participate. Syringes and other sharps are not accepted in this program. Members of the public may deposit unwanted medications anonymously in medication return boxes during the following lobby hours, except on holidays.

All locations are open to the public for medication disposal on weekdays. Locations and their hours include City of York Police Department, 50 W. King St., York, 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; Hellam Township Police Department, 44 Walnut Springs Road, York, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Lower Windsor Township Police Department, 2425 Craley Road, Wrightsville, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Springettsbury Township Police Department, 1501 Mount Zion Road, York, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; West Manchester Township Police Department, 380 E. SNHA Schedules Winter Activities

“Campfire hikes consist of a guided hike with a Susquehanna National Heritage Area staff member followed by a campfire with marshmallows for roasting and hot chocolate to warm up with,” Scholz stated. “During the hike, themes will vary depending on the guide, group interests and weather, but we will observe winter wildlife and practice species identification along the way.”

She noted that the program began last year when staff members were looking for a way to get people to visit the Zimmerman Center in the winter and get outdoors to explore the area. “We do a lot of programs in the summer due to the weather, but wintertime is also a great time to take a hike,” Scholz explained. “Last year, we completed our outdoor nature space at the Zimmerman Center, complete with a fire circle, and we wanted to incorporate it into our programs and share it with our weekend visitors. So, we thought that a guided hike followed by a warm camp-

fire would be a great use of that space.”

Scholz emphasized that the hikes are rated easy to moderate, noting that winter weather can create some challenges such as wet or slippery paths. The hikes are open to people of all ages. There is no charge for participants age 16 and under, and there is a small fee for those age 16 and up. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather.

Scholz said the organization recently acquired a set of snowshoes and she hopes people will get a chance to try them this winter. “In the past, we have had people call

Susquehanna National Heritage Area is planning to replace the rocking chairs on the Riverview Deck at Columbia Crossing. The poly rocking chairs are available for sponsorship or dedication. A plaque will be placed on the header board of the chair to recognize the sponsor. There will only be 10 rockers. Siblings Mike and Andrew Flinchbaugh and Julie Keene, are continuing the stewardship practices begun by their recently retired parents, Ritchie and Sonia.
