York County Community Foundation (YCCF) is changing its competitive grant making by evaluating grants of $6,000 or less from the Fund for York County (FFYC) and the Embracing Aging Fund (EA) in a way that reaches a broader, more diverse audience. YCCF is inviting volunteer grant readers from the larger community to read, score and select which grants to fund twice a year. It will award $120,000 annually using this process, $35,000 from FFYC and $25,000 from EA each cycle. This change will allow YCCF to enhance its work by involving more people in the decision making and getting grant checks to the selected nonprofits more quickly so that they can impact the community. Anyone who is at least 18 years old, resides in York County, and is not employed by a nonprofit agency serving York County can review grants. Those interested in becoming a community grant reader can learn more and sign up at www.yccf.org.

Rotary To Accept Grant Applications Rotary Club of East York will accept grant applications from York County nonprofit organizations. Special consideration will be given to projects that include volunteer participation from club members. Completed applications are due by Saturday, Feb. 22. Mountville Mennonite Church, and the MCC East Coast Materials Resource Center in Ephrata. MCC was founded in 1920 by Mennonites and Mennonite Brethren groups that formed a committee to provide food and other aid to people affected by war and famine in southern Russia, which is present-day Ukraine. Today, MCC provides humanitarian relief in more than 50 nations. Offering comforters and blankets has been one of the ways MCC has provided relief resources since the end of World War II. According to MCC representative Linda Espenshade, the organization sent more than 53,000 comforters to people in need in 2018, with approximately 30,000 of those comforters coming from MCC supporters on the East Coast. “Each comforter is unique and conveys a message of compassion,” stated J Ron Byler, MCC

United States executive director. “People who get these comforters realize they are getting something personal. Someone has chosen the fabric and crafted each one with their hands. They understand this is a gift of love.” For The Great Winter WarmUp, participants worked together to combine handmade comforter tops, warm batting, and sturdy backing fabric into durable comforters. The squares of fabric that make up the comforter tops had already been sewn together prior to the knotting sessions. At Erisman Mennonite Church, more than 80 volunteers worked together to complete a total of 111 comforters on Jan. 17 and 20. Janet Runion Patton, who leads the Sewing Circle that meets regularly at the church, said that the members of the group decided they would like to be a host site for The Great Winter Warm-Up

because they had hosted a day for knotting comforters in 2018. Erisman’s Sewing Circle meets at the church, located at 8 S. Erisman Road, Manheim, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. People of all ages and sewing ability levels even novices wanting to learn are welcome to attend. Anyone with interest or questions may call Janet at 717-926-4008. “It’s very ecumenical,” said Janet, noting that participants in the group represent a wide variety of churches throughout the area. During The Great Winter WarmUp, Janet’s husband, Charles Patton, played hymns and other music on the piano which filled the church sanctuary as people of all ages worked away, enjoying quiet conversation and fellowship and breaking at mealtimes for chicken corn soup and light refreshments. Diane Buckley-Maidt traveled

from Ellicott City, Md., to participate at Erisman because it was one of the MCC centennial events she thought would best fit into her schedule for the year. “I got the email and thought it sounded like fun,” said BuckleyMaidt, who served with MCC in the 1980s in Louisiana as well as at the Ephrata headquarters. At the end of the event, Janet delivered the comforters to the MCC Material Resource Center in Ephrata. From there, the comforters will be distributed to people in need throughout the world as a tangible sign of compassion in whatever crisis they may be facing. For instance, comforters have been delivered to people in Syria, Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon in recent years in the wake of war in Syria and other violence in the region. To learn more about MCC and its centennial, readers may visit https://mcc.org.

where I come in,” shared Denlinger, who resides in Mount Joy. “It’s sort of like with physical fitness: It’s not necessarily about not knowing how to do it. We all just need guidance sometimes in certain areas of our lives.” On Thursday, Feb. 20, the community is invited to join Denlinger for “Simply Declutter,” a fun night of organizational motivation and tips, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Columbia Public Library, 24 S. Sixth St., Columbia. The workshop is free, and no registration is necessary. Denlinger will share some of the road blocks that prevent people from decluttering their

homes and spaces. She will also discuss solutions and practical tips for moving past those obstacles. Finding or prioritizing the time to declutter is a common issue for people, along with dealing with emotional attachments to items. “I have people start by focusing on one room at a time and taking a room-by-room approach,” said Denlinger. “You can’t transform it all overnight.” She explained that taking small steps tends to yield greater success versus attempting to tackle everything in one fell swoop. But what about the person who may not see the need to declutter or the value in getting

rid of excess? “Less stuff, less stress,” emphasized Denlinger. “When you have a lot around you, it means you have a lot to do, whether that’s dusting or maintenance or whatever it may be … and once it’s gone, it’s a huge relief off your back.” “Life is stressful enough; we don’t need anything extra weighing us down,” added Denlinger. At the workcamp, teenagers and adults who are members of church youth groups from throughout the country will volunteer their time to repair homes of elderly, disabled, or low-income residents in the community. Projects will range from exterior painting to wheelchair ramp construction and more. Colorado-based Group Mission Trips facilitates the workcamps so that volunteers can provide home repairs to individuals and families in

need. Approximately 450 campers from all over the United States are signed up for the camp, Bachman said, up from 180 campers at the inaugural Eastern York Workcamp Initiative in 2018. “We will be working on 60 to 80 homes within a 25-minute radius of the Eastern York High School,” explained Bachman. “We are still looking for applications from residents that need free home repair.” Residents within the radius in York and Lancaster counties may apply for assistance by calling 717-2522539 and leaving a message. Workcamp volunteers pay registration fees that are used to cover costs for food, insurance,

and some building materials. Fundraisers like the Sweetheart Dinner and Dance then help to cover the rest of the costs for the home improvement projects for those in need. “Our hope and prayer is a great time for all,” shared Bachman. “If it’s a couple or single (person) that can’t afford an expensive evening out, then this community event is for them. We also hope and pray that those that can give will (do so) to help this community outreach event.” The YYR meets on Sundays at 6 p.m. at Faith UMC. Kelby is a lifelong York County resident, and has been a teacher for 25 years. Kelby committed his life to Christ at age twelve, when he “understood salvation, but not necessarily discipleship”. About 24 years ago, however, Kelby sought God more seriously when his life took unexpected and unwanted turns. Kelby recommitted his life to Christ and has been actively teaching Sunday School with middle school boys, young couples, and most recently with elderly shut ins at Hanover Hall Nursing Home. Experiences with Kelby’s wife and her long-term health problems, as well as recent events in his own life, have taught him more than ever about the endless love and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ. Kelby is still learning how to keep “a right perspective on his life as a Christian as he walks life’s journey”. Kelby’s message will focus on how God uses suffering, hardships, and sorrows in our lives.

York Go Red For Women Luncheon Slated The American Heart Association, a nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, invites women from across York County to the 2020 York Go Red for Women Luncheon to support the fight to end heart disease and stroke. This event, chaired by Mary Winand, client services associate of The Financial Advisory Group, will be held on National Wear Red Day, Friday, Feb. 7, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Out Door Country Club, 1157 Detwiler Drive, York. event is designed to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease, which is women’s greatest health threat, according to the American Heart Association. The organization says that one in three women live with some form of cardiovascular disease, and it is on the rise in younger women. cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index. They should also make lifestyle changes like moving more, eating smart and managing their blood pressure. Risk factors within women’s control include smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, poor diet, obesity/being overweight and Type 2 diabetes. This year marks the 16th anniversary of the American Heart Association’s launch of the Go Red for Women movement. Go Red for Women is rooted in raising awareness among women that cardio

vascular disease is the leading cause of death for women around the world. In York County, the Go Red for Women Luncheon aims to empower women to take charge of their heart health. The luncheon features educational speakers, stories from heart disease survivors, a silent auction and more. Becky Sieg, a 35-yearold heart transplant survivor from Biglerville, will deliver the keynote address. McCleary took a tough drive to the hole to finally get the hosts on the board and Glover tied it up at four with three minutes left. A Glover drive to the basket gave the Tide their first lead of the ballgame, and the slow start appears to wear off. They go into the second quarter losing 10-11. “At the start we got some good looks but they just were not dropping,” head coach Kerry Glover. “I just told them to stay patient and consistent.” The bench and crowd could be felt as Ryan Redding hit a three to give the Tide a lead at 15-14. McCleary makes his presence felt on the defensive end as he picks up a few blocks. Poole makes some tough buckets underneath to push the lead. With two minutes remaining in the half, Berks leads 19-21. Despite opportunities, Columbia goes into the locker room down 23-19. At the half, coach Glover told the guys they need to finish at the rim better and set better screens. They clearly listened to him and had a big second half scoring 36 points. Both teams came out firing and they ended the first quarter tied at 19. The Tide, however, had no answer in the second as they were outscored by 10 points. Columbia regrouped after the half, cutting the deficit to seven heading into the final quarter but could not get any closer. ahead finding Poole on the other end cutting it to one point. Poole decides to take it himself to give the Tide the lead for the final time. Columbia traps the ball at midcourt but the ball finds Brady Smith who drops a triple as the place erupts and the momentum fully shifts the Tide’s way. Glover takes it away and hits a fancy layup at the end other end to put the Tide up six. They were not done yet though as Glover drives another one to the hole with under a minute left. He would also make a pair of free throws to close out the third quarter giving the Tide an eight-point lead heading into the decisive final quarter. The Tide ended the quarter on a 12-2 run to make it 35-27. Poole knocks down a pair of free throws to open the fourth quarter. Glover, with another bucket in the paint about two minutes into the quarter, puts the Tide up nine. Poole hits a midrange jumper in transition to push the lead to 11. Just under five minutes remaining as Luis Cruz gets fouled underneath but gets the basket to count and makes his free throw to put them up 14 points, the biggest lead of the night so far. McCleary calls for an isolation and gets just that as he takes his man to the bucket to put the lead back at 14. Poole goes to the line again hitting one and knocks down back-to-back threes to give the Tide a 20-point lead. The starters’ night ended with just less than two minutes left in the game as they helped Columbia pick up the non-league win 55-36. “We need to be playing our best basketball right now and I think we are close but not fully there yet,” said Glover. Poole poured in a game-high 21. His season-high is 35. Glover scored 15. McCleary added six points. Cruz

Eastern York Boys Notch Four Straight Wins by Eric Pyles

Four games does not make a season, but after six weeks of back-and-forth play, the Eastern York boys’ basketball team needed just one week to string together four straight wins. “To be able to go out there and put together a four-game winning streak in five days and deal with the physical fatigue and also mental fatigue, it is a testament to the boys and how they are dealing with it,” said head coach Justin Seitz. The end result is a 12-8 overall record, good enough for eighth in the District 3-4A rankings and a 6-5 YAIAA Division II record. “Even though we didn’t have the wins, we felt we were paying good basketball, heading in the right direction,” said Seitz. “Once you start winning some of those games, the confidence level of 15-16-17-year-old kids elevates and they are able to make plays they weren’t necessarily making earlier in the year.” Eastern York’s first confidence builder came on January 24th via a 50-44 win over West York. “Great atmosphere. The place was packed and we were able to execute for four quarters and make some key plays late in that game that carried us to the victory,” said Seitz. The Golden Knights opened a onepoint cushion over the first eight minutes which carried over to the second half after a deadlocked second quarter. Eastern turned that 23-22 lead into a nine-point cushion by doubling up the Bulldogs, 16-8, coming out of the break. That provided the Golden Knights enough wiggle room to withstand West York’s 14-11 run through the final stanza. Trevor Seitz led the way with 19 points while Micah Myers chipped in with 11 points. The Golden Knights had little down time to enjoy the win with an afternoon non-league game on tap for Saturday the 25th. Eastern started slow

and trailed Garden Spot 14-12 after the opening quarter. “We had to grind through that first quarter but once the game flow started, we were able play up to our expectations and execute the game plan,” stated Seitz. Eastern held the home team to single digit scoring in all three remaining quarters flipping the two-point first quarter deficit into a 55-39 win. That started with a 19-8 run in the second quarter that sent the teams into the break with Eastern York up by nine. The Golden Knight offense cooled over the second half producing a 12-9 third quarter edge and a 12-8 fourth quarter margin for the final score. Trevor Seitz hit double figures with 21 points while Kaleb Corwell added 11 points. Win number three of the run came on the 27th when Eastern York welcomed their cross-river rival Columbia to Wrightsville. The Golden Knights reset their single game high score for the season in the 82-67 win. “Another playoff atmosphere in a packed house. Throw the records out the door when you are playing a game like that,” commented Seitz. Trevor Seitz scored a game high 29 in the win, adding eight rebounds and five assists to his six made three pointers. Myers, with 16 points along with Austin Bausman and his 10 points gave the Golden Knights a trio of double-digit scorers. That allowed the home squad to post three straight 19-point frames for a 57-50 lead with eight minutes remaining. Eastern outscored the Tide 25-17 in the final quarter to secure the 15-point win. Eastern York wrapped up the fourgame run on the 28th by dominating Dover 80-43. Offense was hard to find in the opening frame but Eastern controlled things from there leading to a 37-point win. “They did some things early in the game that were a little different then what we’ve seen lately which is good for us,” said Seitz.

Staff photo

The slow start resulted in a fourpoint lead after one but a quartet of double-digit scorers took turns pacing the offense from there, allowing Eastern York to pull away. A 23-11 run up to intermission gave the Golden Knights some breathing room while a 19-10 third quarter edge pushed the lead to 25-points. The final margin was set with Eastern York’s 27-15 clip in the final stanza. Bausman made it two games in a row in double digits by connecting on four from long range for a game high 15. Myers added 14 points and 10 rebounds while Trevor Seitz drilled three from downtown for 12 points. Tristan Sawmiller finished up the quartet with an 11-point game. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Lady Golden Knights were unable to enjoy their own winning streak but did sandwich two lopsided wins over Dover around a one-point loss to West York. The 2-1 stretch bumps Eastern York’s overall record to 15-6 and their YAIAA mark to 8-5. The first of Eastern York’s lopsided wins over Dover came on the 22nd by a 57-38 final while the second came six days later via a 66-18 final. “They are down this year, rebuilding,” said head coach Brad Weaver. “It gets everyone a lot of experience, that’s the way we use it.” As the lopsided finals would suggest, Eastern York outscored Dover in all but one of the eight quarters starting with a 22-11 run through the opening frame of that January 22nd tilt. The lone quarter that Dover controlled followed but the Lady Eagles’ slim 11-8 edge did little to slow down the Lady Golden Knights. In fact, Eastern York recouped those three points with a 9-6 edge in the third and finished the game with an 18-10 run in the fourth. Addy Malone netted a game high 18 while Breana Grim (12 points), Victoria Zerbe (11 points) and Mara Weaver (10 points) joined the

double-digit club in the win. A week later the Lady Golden Knights had just three double digit scorers in their 66-18 blow-out win but a total of nine different players scored. Grim’s 20 points came on the strength of six long range bombs. Three of those came during Eastern’s 24-9 first quarter blitz with another in an 11-5 second quarter edge. Grim connected on the final two in the third to help Eastern roll through the frame on a 21-0 run. The Lady Golden Knights coasted to the finish line, scoring just 10 points in the final frame but still increased their lead by six. Kendall Felix stepped into the void created by Mara Weaver’s shin splits to score 12 points while picking up her first ‘hard-hat’ award given by coach Weaver for Felix’s blue-collar work outside the box score. Malone completed the double-digit trio with an 11-point effort. In between the two cozy wins was the 44-43 loss to West York on January 24. “They are very well rounded,” said Weaver. “They are deep and have a good bench.” The well-rounded Lady Bulldogs posted scoring advantages to kick off both halves starting with a 16-12 edge in the opening frame. Eastern responded with a slight, 9-7, edge in the second to make it a twopoint affair at the break. West York regained their footing in the third with an 11-6 run that made it a 34-27 game with just one quarter remaining. Once again Eastern York bounced back this time to the tune of a 16-10 edge but the comeback bid fell short by one point. Just six Lady Golden Knights scored led by Zerbe and Malone’s 12 points. Mara Weaver added 11 points while Lily Campbell (four points), Abigail Henise (two points) and Grim (two points) also contributed. WRESTLING The wrestling team continued their

push to the postseason by splitting two of their final three regular season dual matches. The Golden Knights managed to top Hanover on the 27th but came up short opposite Dover on the 23rd leaving Eastern with an 8-9 mark with just one dual match remaining. Against Hanover, the Golden Knights claimed eight of the 13 weight classes after the match opened with a no contest at 106. Two of those losses came in the evening’s first action putting the visitors in a quick 12-0 hole. Four straight Golden Knight wins flipped the match and put Eastern York up 21-12. Logan Crean started the run with a forfeit win at 126 with Eugene Courtright following with a second period pinfall that made it 12-12. Hailu Barrow

(138) eked out an 8-7 win over Roger Romany before Zachary Dice finished the run with another pinfall win, this one over Breyden Parry (145). A quick Nighthawk win at 152 led into two more Eastern York victories. Dillon Mealy pinned Miguel Melendez (160) at the 3:12 mark and Brock Bolton finished his 170-pound clash with Amir Benson with Eastern York’s final pinfall win, putting the Golden Knights up 33-15. Isaac Buser claimed Eastern York’s final points on the mat, topping Kardan Trish 2-0 at 195 while Austin Baker claimed the final Eastern win via forfeit at 220. Eastern York’s lone forfeit closed out the match and set the 42-27 final. The Golden Knights found the going a lot more difficult against See Eastern pg 10

Lancaster County Garden Club will meet on Monday, Feb. 10. “A Backyard Wilderness: 40 Years of Close-up Nature Photography” will be presented by Dr. Kerry Givens. He will share some of his best nature photographs, with a focus on the backyard wildlife that can be found in one’s own gardens. A lifelong Pennsylvania naturalist and also a local ophthalmologist, Givens has been fascinated with close-up photography of the natural world ever since he got his first camera in 1977. Since then, hundreds of his photos have been published in books, magazines, and calendars. Many of these pictures were taken in his own yard. The North Museum of Natural History at F&M campus will host an exhibit of Kerry’s work from May to August. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Salem United Church of Christ, 2312 Marietta Ave., Rohrerstown. Guests are welcome to attend for a set donation. looking forward to their highly anticipated matchup against Lancaster Mennonite, Wednesday, February 4 on the hill. This game should determine who is crowned section champs. “We have one of the best fan bases and nothing beats playing up on the hill,” Poole said about the home crowd. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The girls were not as lucky as the boys this week as they lost two nonleague showdowns against Littlestown and Linden Hall. Columbia stuck around against Littlestown last Monday, January 27, even though they lost 48-38. They went into the second quarter tied at ten but went into the half down five. Audreanna Frazier led the way with 12 points and Morgan Bigler added another eight. Daizha Tucker scored seven while Jada Dyson and Mackenzie Burke both contributed four points. Lesasia Hardy scored three. Against Linden Hall one night later, the girls just could not seem to get anything going as they lost 56-16. Frazier once again led the way with six points while Burke added five and Hardy scored four. Frazier and Burke are both averaging 11 points a game. Bigler is averaging almost eight a game with Hardy around six. The girl’s basketball team currently sits in the middle of the section standings at 3-5 and are 6-13 overall. BOWLING The bowling team stays rolling as they sit in the middle of the section. Last week they split their league matchups against Northern Lebanon and Lancaster Mennonite. They picked up a 7-0 win against the Blazers. Gabe Davila averaged
