Preserving history at Mount Pisgah BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Tucked away a few blocks south of Route 462 in Wrightsville, Mount Pisgah Cemetery holds history on its grounds. The cemetery marks the final resting place of 50 veterans, with a dozen dating back to the Civil War. Historically, it was a Black cemetery, receiving the bodies that were forbidden burial in the

neighboring white cemeteries during segregation. Growing up in the Wrightsville area, Phil Lehman knew of the cemetery along Mulberry Street, but he didn’t know much about it. “It was always called the ‘Black cemetery,’” he said. When he became involved with the Wrightsville Cemetery Association, a 501(c)(3) organization, years ago, he learned its official See History pg 2

A variety of individually wrapped baked goods made by the women of the parish will also be available for purchase each Friday as well as a variety of drinks. As Storm explained, the fish fry tradition began at the church as a way to honor a Catholic dietary restriction during the season of Lent.

“Jesus died on Good Friday, so Catholics and other religions refrain from eating meat in His honor on Fridays. It is a form of penance,” she explained. “The tradition is to abstain from meat, not necessarily to eat fish.” The fish fry is a fundraiser for the Parish Council of Catholic Women, Storm said, noting that proceeds will benefit various activities in the parish, Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School, Water for Life and other nonprofits. Congregation members begin prepping each meal the day before, making crab cakes and setting up, Storm remarked. The men of the parish assist with the setup, cleanup, heavy lifting, washing dishes and working in the kitchen. Reservations are not required for the fish fry. There are two parking lots at the church as well as parking on the street. “Enjoy a tasty, filling meal at a reasonable price,” Storm said, encouraging people to come to the fish fry. “You just never know who you may meet there as people from Columbia and surrounding areas come to enjoy good food and to socialize.”

While the Wrightsville C e m e te r y A s s o c i a t i o n maintains and operates the cemetery - which still has plots available - Lancaster resident Warren Taylor is the caretaker. His father, Warren C. Taylor, was a World War II veteran and his grandfather James Taylor served in the Spanish-American War. Both are buried on-site. After absorbing the cost of cemetery maintenance for years, Warren approached the Wrightsville Borough Council in 2019 and asked it to take over the cemetery upkeep. Soon, the Wrightsville Cemetery Association, which owns and maintains the Fairview Cemetery in Wrightsville, stepped in, with Warren still playing an active role with the site. Numerous individuals and organizations help with the cemetery as well, including members of the Riverside Masonic Lodge 503 in Wrightsville, who have begun the time-intensive work of cleaning

Rotar y Club of Eastern York helped raise funds to replace the roof on a small shed on the property that stores the lawn equipment to maintain the grounds, and two students from Eastern York High School currently mow the grass in the warmer months. We’re also hoping to continue cleaning up the stones, because some of them are so old, you can hardly read them, but the people buried here deserve to be remembered.” To learn more or to support the cemetery, contact Lehman at 717-992-2042 or cbphil71@gmail.com.

Penn State Extension will host a Tree Climbing School from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, June 10 to 13, at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. Geared for arborists, property managers and foresters, the workshop will teach the basic knowledge and skills required for safe tree climbing and maintenance. Students will not become accomplished climbers; the school will focus on fundamentals and safety. The school will include classroom and fieldwork focused on safety and safe climbing practices, equipment and use of hand tools, tree terminology, tree disease and insect diagnosis, culture and pruning, tree removal and knots. A great deal of time will be spent in trees climbing. All participants should be in good health and have a desire to work in arboriculture. On the first day, all participants will be asked to sign a waiver. Those who have disabilities that prevent a full range of body motion, who experience difficulty with manual dexterity, or who have significantly impaired vision should not register for this program. The workshop will take place rain or shine, and participants should dress for the weather. Climbing

equipment will be provided; attendees may bring their own gear, but it will be inspected before use. Attendees should bring their own lunch and beverages each day. Space is limited, and preregistration is required at http://tinyurl.com/Tree -Climbing-School-June24.
