The scene last Tuesday night up on the hill in Columbia was one many have not experienced since 2008 as the Tide cut down the net in lieu of their section championship. In reality they clinched on January 31 when they beat Pequea Valley and, with a Lancaster Mennonite loss, it officially became theirs. Columbia was loud from start to finish as it was senior night against Lancaster Mennonite, last Tuesday,

February 4, and they looked to polish off their unbeaten section record. The emotions were high as well as Michael Poole could be heard screaming as soon as the national anthem concluded but just hours later he had watery eyes as he was the first to cut down a piece of the net after a convincing 76-91 victory. The Tide came out hot as they started Kerry Glover, Luis Cruz, Brady Smith, Matt McCleary, and Poole. They found themselves down four points early but Smith and Cruz dug

them out for Columbia’s first lead of the game. McCleary got a strip and took it himself, finishing off a nice spin move to put the Tide up 12-8 midway through the first quarter. Next possession Glover converted a tough shot in the lane to push the lead to six. Smith hit another three pointer to put the lead at seven. Then the turnover bug hit Lancaster Mennonite and McCleary came to life, hitting two three’s to put the Tide up 29-14 at the end of the first. The second quarter started out a

little slow, as the Tide did not convert until two minutes into the quarter with Poole getting fouled. It then came down to offensive rebounds. McCleary and Smith cleaned up the glass and finished it themselves on back-to-back possessions. McCleary hit another three to push the lead to 42-16. The Tide buckled down on defense, converting Blazer mistake and taking a commanding 49-26 lead into the break. “It was an off night,” Poole said of his rough night and of McCleary’s big game. “Game like that I just started to

look for Matt (McCleary) because he had it going.” Cruz started the scoring after the break with a nifty reverse lay in underneath but the Blazers would turn up the pressure and go on a little run of their own. McCleary and Glover made sure that did not last long, scoring on consecutive possessions, and Cruz got a tip in to push the lead to 23. With three minutes remaining in the third quarter the Tide is winning 61-43. Glover finished off the frame, gliding down the lane for an easy two to close it out at 71-53. Poole finally got it going a little in the final quarter, scoring off a tough take to the tin. He then hit a free throw line jumper as well, but the Blazers would not go away quietly. They cut into the Tide lead, trailing by ten with six minutes to play. It then came down to defensive stops and free throws as McCleary was stepping into charges the whole night. The Tide hit enough free throws late to pick up the 15-point victory and McCleary hit the last basket of the night with mere seconds left on the clock. McCleary joked after the game that he had to put a show on for the home team since it could be his last game on this floor so when he had the opportunity to score over 30 points he took it. He was only two points way from his career high of 33 points. Glover finished with 19 points. Poole even though he struggled still found away to pour in 16 points with most of those coming late in the game. Cruz added another 14 points and was pivotal at stopping the Blazers runs with three point plays exactly

when the Tide needed it. Smith got the party started with a few quick three’s and finished with eight points. Ryan Redding scored three to cap off his senior year regular season. On Friday, January 31, Columbia picked up a 78-35 victory at Pequea Valley. They started out hot, outscoring their opponent by nine in the first quarter and never looked back. McCleary lead the way with 15 points and Poole added 11. Glover and Smith both scored ten with Redding and Matt Hinkle adding eight apiece. Cruz (7), Carter Houck (6), Daniel Morata (2) and Matt Gambler (1) rounded out the scoring. They also hosted a non-league matchup against Linville one day later where they again outscored their opponents by 11 in the first quarter and ran away with an 82-50 victory. Glover led the way with 20 points, Poole contributed 17 and McCleary, with an even dozed, made it three with double figures. Both Hinkle and Smith added nine points. Cruz (8), Houck (3), Redding (2) and Gambler (2) also contributed. Now all eyes turn to the post season as the boys could potentially host a rematch with Lancaster Mennonite in a district showdown. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The girls’ team, unlike the boys, ended their season on a three game skid. They hosted Bermudian Springs on Thursday, January 30, and just couldn’t seem to get it going in a 61-41 loss. Audreanna Frazier and Mackenzie Burke led the way for the lady Tide, both scoring nine points. Jada See Columbia pg 6

Eastern Closes Out Regular Season With 6 Wins by Eric Pyles

As the Eastern York boys’ basketball team gears up for a postseason run, they appear to have shaken the back-and-forth flow that plagued them most of the season. Eastern was sitting at 7-7 overall and 4-4 in YAIAA play heading into the final two weeks of play. During that stretch the Golden Knights claimed seven of eight games, including six straight to closeout the regular season. That run bumped Eastern York to 14-8 overall and 7-5 in league action and put the Golden Knights in the mix for a YAIAA playoff berth and on track for a first-round bye in the District 3-4A playoffs that kick off February 17th. The final victory in that six-game stretch came on February 1st as the Golden Knights welcomed the Golden Mules of Solanco to Wrightsville. A trio of double-digit scorers helped Eastern control the game starting with

a 16-10 edge in the opening frame. The Golden Knights stretched their lead to 15 points at the break with a 20-11 run through the second quarter and more or less put the game away with a 14-8 edge in the third. Solanco was able to keep things tight in the final frame but Eastern still managed a 14-13 scoring advantage for the 22point final margin. Isaiah Saahir paced the Eastern York trio with a game high 17 points while Trevor Seitz chipped in with 14 points and Dustin Cunningham added 11. The Golden Knights wrapped up their YAIAA slate on January 30th with a trip to Dover just two days after the Eagles made their annual visit to Wrightsville. Eastern was unable to reproduce their 37-point shellacking from the 28th, instead settling for a 55-44 victory in the weather induced make-up game. Seitz was the lone Golden Knights to hit double figures, tallying 22

points in the win. Seitz’s offense allowed Eastern to outscore Dover in all but the opening frame where the teams played to an 11-11 draw. Eastern York opened up a seven-point halftime lead and slowly stretched it to the final margin of 11 with a 10-9 edge in the third and a 19-16 run through the fourth. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Lady Golden Knights finished their 2019-2020 regular season on the last day of January, enjoying a 62-33 win over Northeastern. The 29-point victory bumped Eastern to 16-6 overall and 9-5 in YAIAA play. The former tentatively slots the Lady Golden Knights as the four seed for the upcoming District 3-4A tournament while their YAIAA mark was good enough to earn Division II’s final berth into the league championship tournament where they will face Central York on February 8th. With three double digit scorers, Eastern York had little trouble handling Northeastern, cruising to a 62-33 win. Addy Malone led the way with a game high 18 points that included six of Eastern York’s 13 first quarter points. That helped the Lady Golden Knights open a 13-6 lead after eight minutes.

A 16-6 run through the second quarter allowed the home team to enjoy a 29-12 cushion at intermission. An 18-13 Breana Grim fueled third quarter run pushed the lead to 22points as the sophomore scored 12 of her 16 points in the frame. Eastern York outscored the Lady Bobcats 15-8 over the final eight minutes for the 62-33 final. Victoria Zerbe tallied 10 points to complete the double-digit trio. WRESTLING The Eastern York wrestling team concluded their regular season dual matches on January 29th with a 51-18 demolition of Delone Catholic. The Golden Knights collected wins in 10 of the 13 contested weight classes with all but three earning bonus points. One of those three non-bonus point matches opened the match with Zach Dice earning a 9-3 win over Artem Reichart at 145. Kaleb Crean followed by pinning Devin Reese just before the end of the first period of their 152pound bout, giving Eastern a quick 9-0 lead. Delone picked up one of their three wins at 160 to make it 9-6 but the Golden Knights ripped off seven straight wins to take a commanding

48-6 lead. Brock Bolton got the run started with a 75-second pinfall win over Harrison Smith at 170 with Magnus Krissinger (182) and Isaac Buser (195) quickly making it 27-6 with forfeit wins. Austin Baker picked up a 4-2 win over Sam Scovitch at 220 while Nate Dandridge collected the final forfeit win at 285. Neither team sent anyone to the mat for the 106-pound match leaving Cameron Weidlich’s second period pin of Ryderlee Reichart as the next final, giving Eastern York a 42-6 lead. Hunter Eveler finished the sevenmatch run with a 2:43 pinfall win over Josh Dietrich at 120 with Hailu Barrow posting the final Eastern win after back-to-back Squire wins at 126 and 132. Barrow’s 6-3 win over Nick Carpenter at 138 not only closed out the action but it also set the final at 51-18. The Golden Knights finished their regular season slate on February 1st by hosting the Martin Kondor Memorial Dual Tournament. Eastern York posted wins over York Tech (55-16) and Central Bucks South (58-18) but fell to Elizabethtown (31-24) and Harrisburg (46-30) to finish the day 2-2. Eastern saw three of their grapplers enjoy a perfect day with Buser leading

the way. The junior earned all four of his wins via pinfall. Dandridge fell one pinfall short of equaling his teammate, settling instead for a forfeit win against Central Bucks South. Kaleb Crean also went 4-0 on the day adding a forfeit against Harrisburg to his two pinfalls and a decision. Four additional wrestlers just missed a perfect mark, instead going 3-1. Weidlich enjoyed the quickest path to three wins, adding a pinfall win against Harrisburg to forfeit wins opposite York Tech and Central Bucks South. Dice earned pinfalls against York tech and Central Bucks South, and added in a regular decision against Elizabethtown. Krissinger picked up six team points with two of his wins, collecting a forfeit against Elizabethtown and a pinfall win against Central Bucks South after earning a decision in the York Tech match. Dillon Mealey collecting a decision, a forfeit and a major decision. Eugene Courtright was the lone Golden Knight to manage two wins on the day, picking up a forfeit win in the Central Bucks South match and a pinfall win against York Tech. Bolton, Eveler and Logan Crean accounted for one victory each.

SSC from pg 1

The Lancaster County Marine Corps League installed new officers on Jan. 13. Among those installed was commandant Thomas Trudel. Members of the Marine Corps League join together in camaraderie and fellowship for the purpose of preserving the traditions and promoting the interests of the United States Marine Corps. The Marine Corps League bands together those currently serving in the U.S. Marine Corps and those who have been honorably discharged so they may promote the ideals of American freedom and democracy, voluntarily aiding all Marines, FMF corpsmen, and former Marines and FMF corpsmen and their widows and orphans. The Marine Corps League also preserves the history of the U.S. Marine Corps and observes the anniversaries of historical occasions of particular relevance to Marines. The Marine Corps provides aid through several programs. The Wounded Marines Program provides financial support, visits from Marine Corps League members, and off-site day trips to Marine Corps personnel at Naval medical centers and other locations. Through the Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service Program, Marine Corps League members supplement staff at VA hospitals and facilities in lifting morale and providing comfort and assistance to institutionalized veterans. Marine Corps League members also take part

Matinee shows will begin at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 16 and 23. “The Mountaintop” is Hall’s fictional retelling of how the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spent his last night on Earth before his assassination. The 90-minute drama is set entirely in one room at The Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn., on April 3, 1968, and will star Jeremy R. Patterson as King and Pilisa Nicolette Mackey as Camae. King is working on a speech when Camae, a maid working at the motel, interrupts to deliver his coffee. A conversation ensues examining King’s achievements, failures, and unfinished dreams. Patterson said “The Mountaintop” will likely challenge audience members’ preconceived ideas about King and who he was. “It’s going to be a mixture of how Katori Hall and (SSC director) Jim Johnson view him and an exploration between Pilisa and myself,” described Patterson. “If we’re doing our jobs right, people are going to leave wrestling with the work about (King) and his story.” That the timing of the play coincides with February being Black History Month is a mixed bag for Patterson. “It’s a blessing and a curse,” said Patterson. “It’s great to have the opportunity to take the month that is nationally recognized as Black History Month and participate in (a play) that recognizes something so historically relevant, but it’s also a thing where you go, ‘Had to be in February, huh?’ But it’s a great start.” “I celebrate Black History Month every month, but I definitely do really go a little more extra for February,” Mackey remarked. “I really like the idea

in the annual U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots campaign by raising funds, collecting toys, and distributing toys to children in need. Several groups are associated with the Marine Corps League. The Women Marines Association is dedicated to preserving the history of women in the U.S. Marine Corps. This group engages in youth education, the mentoring of Marines, charitable programs, and programs promoting patriotism. Another group, the Marine Corps League Auxiliary, was formed to promote the interests of the U.S. Marine Corps League and the Marine Corps League and to protect and advance the welfare of Marines and their dependents. Members participate in programs to preserve the rights and freedoms of all Americans and to foster values such as honesty, loyalty and family. The Young Marines of the Marine Corps League is a youth program emphasizing values such as honesty, courage, and respect. The organization also focuses on education on and prevention of drug abuse. Pictured on front: Thomas Trudel (left) was installed as the new commandant of the Lancaster County Marine Corps League on Jan. 13. The outgoing commandant, Gilbert Bixler, was also recognized.

that it’s written by a black playwright because I want to be about that. It does paint a really great picture of Martin Luther King that is not whitewashed.” As for the character of Camae, Mackey describes her as “unapologetically black.” “I love that. I relate to that 100%,” she shared. “I definitely identify with the pride and the dignity that she takes in being a black woman, especially in a time that black women were treated like dirt.” “She really embodies the three different prevailing stereotypes of black women: the mammy, the jezebel, and the sapphire,” continued Mackey. “Camae has to be the caregiver and also she has that sensuality about her, but then at the same time she can be sassy and loud. I’m hoping I can incorporate all of those and then transcend into actual humanity.” “I like that she is not shy about each element of those stereotypes, but ultimately she doesn’t let them define all that she is,” Mackey stated. “It’s almost like she overcomes each of them as she plays into them, in a sense.” Mackey hopes that audiences will leave reminded of the importance of activism - regardless of how unglamorous taking a stand may be. “I think this show should be a reminder that activists are human,” said Mackey. “This work is not easy and it’s not quick, but it is ultimately worth it to take a stand for what you believe in for justice.” Interested individuals may purchase tickets at www.susquehanna stage.com or at the box office prior to each performance. life took unexpected and unwanted turns. He recommitted his life to Jesus Christ and has been actively teaching Sunday school with middle school boys, young couples, and, most recently, with elderly residents at the Hanover Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Moul shares that experiences with his wife’s long-term health problems, as well as recent events in his own life, have taught him more than ever about the endless love and mercy of Jesus. At the breakfast, his message will focus on how God uses suffering, hardships, and sorrows in people’s

lives. The Rev. Lloyd Marchant first began organizing the annual Men’s Resurrection Breakfast at his church to fill a void he felt was created when Promise Keepers, an international men’s ministry, stopped holding breakfasts in the York County area. Marchant has reached out to men from the local area to speak each year. Men of all ages are welcome to attend. To register for the breakfast, interested individuals may call 717-755-0091 or email grace baptistyork@comcast.net. The deadline to register is Sunday, Feb. 23. A freewill offering will be received.
