Supporting students BY CATHY MOLITORIS
The members of Riverside Masonic Lodge 503 in Wrightsville believe in supporting the community. Their efforts range from providing meals for families to organizing blood drives. They also award scholarships annually to students in the Eastern York School District or
any student with an affiliation with the lodge. “We think it’s important to help deserving young people continue their education,” said Ed Reisinger, senior warden. Years ago, the organization began offering a single $500 scholarship, and that tradition continued for quite some time, Reisinger said. See Students pg 3

penance,” she explained. “The tradition is to abstain from meat, not necessarily to eat fish.” The fish fry is a fundraiser for the Parish Council of Catholic Women, Storm said, noting that proceeds will benefit various activities in the parish, Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School, Water for Life and other nonprofits. Congregation members begin prepping each meal the day before, making crab cakes and setting up, Storm remarked. The men of the parish assist with the setup, cleanup, heavy lifting, washing dishes and working in the kitchen. Reservations are not required for the fish fry. There are two parking lots at the church as well as parking on the street. “Enjoy a tasty, filling meal at a reasonable price,” Storm said, encouraging people to come to the fish fry. “You just never know who you may meet there as people from Columbia and surrounding areas come to enjoy good food and to socialize.”
Accepting their scholarship awards are Mason Smeltzer (left), Charles Heap (second from left) and Amya Best (right), with Ed Reisinger (second from right), senior warden.
Holy Trinity will host “Tolton: From Slave to Priest” BY CATHY MOLITORIS
History will come to life inside Holy Trinity Catholic Church when the church hosts “Tolton: From Slave to Priest.” The oneman drama will be performed by actor Jim Coleman on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. at the church, 409 Cherry St., Columbia. The performance is free, but a freewill offering will be received. The play is based on the life of
Father Augustus Tolton, the first Black priest. Tolton was born a slave on a farm in Missouri in 1854, before his mother risked everything to reach freedom in Illinois with her three small children. Despite facing hardships and prejudice in his new home, Tolton pursued his desire to become a Catholic priest. He was rejected by every seminary in the United States, but he did not give up. Instead, he was ordained See Tolton pg 2

or 45 years, the members of St. Peter Catholic Church in Columbia have been offering Lenten Fish Frys to the community. “The event is a tradition in our parish,” said Claire Storm, fish fry committee member. “It was started by our parents and handed down, so now a younger generation has taken over and the tradition continues.” This year’s Lenten Fish Fry will begin on Friday, Feb. 16, and will continue on Fridays through March 22. The event is open to the public, and dine-in and takeout options will be available from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Center, Second and Union streets, Columbia. The menu will include platters of one or two crab cakes, baked haddock, fried fillet of fish, fried shrimp, fish sticks, fried scallops, fried oysters or breaded fried clam strips. Macaroni and cheese, french fries, stewed tomatoes, a vegetable, coleslaw and a dinner
roll are included in the price of the platter. A la carte items include a crab cake sandwich, a fried fish fillet sandwich, an oyster sandwich, french fries, macaroni and cheese, stewed tomatoes, coleslaw and cheesy bread sticks with marinara sauce. Quarts, pints and bowls of homemade soups will be available each week as well. On Feb. 16 and March 8, potato soup will be served. On Feb. 23, minestrone will be featured, and on March 1, cream of crab will be on the menu. Cheesy broccoli will be offered on March 15, and Maryland crab will be served on March 22. A variety of individually wrapped baked goods made by the women of the parish will also be available for purchase each Friday as well as a variety of drinks. As Storm explained, the fish fry tradition began at the church as a way to honor a Catholic dietary restriction during the season of Lent. “Jesus died on Good Friday, so Catholics and other religions refrain from eating meat in His honor on Fridays. pandemic shut down live theater in March of 2020. When he learned the company was staging “Tolton,” Nikolaus reached out again and was able to schedule a Columbia performance. The show is hosted by the Holy Name Society, a maleonly organization within the church with roots dating to 1274. The society teaches devotion to Jesus, promotes spiritual and corporal works of mercy, assists with parish fundraising efforts and operates several committees,

including sponsorship of educational and spiritually enlightening programs, Nikolaus explained. He encourages people to come to the show to learn more about a man whose faith impacted thousands. “The true story is compelling and shows that no part of society in the mid1800s was exempt from the sting of racial prejudice,” he stated. “It exhibits the power of the human will, with God’s grace, to accomplish a heavenly goal. Augustus Tolton actually conquers the hardened hearts of his time.” “Tolton: From Slave to Priest” is suitable for people age 10 and up. Patterson reached out to friends, colleagues and people he admired in the local theater scene to build his dream cast of 10. “I fell in love with this play immediately,” said Deb Good-Zeiner, who plays Aunt George. “The issues that it brings up that the women struggle with are ones women continue to struggle with today, between abuse and being disenfranchised and trying to find their power. I just loved it for those reasons.” Along with gathering the actors he wanted to work with, Patterson brought in Preston Cuer as fight choreo g rapher for the show, which includes many scenes of stage combat. Jim Coleman performs in “Tolton: From Slave to Priest.”
In 1860s London, four women discover themselves and find empowerment in an unusual place - a boxing ring. That’s the premise of “The Sweet Science of Bruising,” a play that will be performed at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, on select dates from Friday, Feb. 16, through Sunday, Feb. 25. “All four of the women in this show are so drastically different from each other,” said Libby Casey Stauffer, who plays Anna Lamb, one of the boxers, “but still, they find themselves in the same place.” That place is Victorian-era England, where women felt oppression in society, said Chrissy Nickel, who por trays boxer Polly Stokes. “ Wo m e n h a d b e e n boxers previously, but in the Victorian era, there was a more conservative push toward women’s role in society, and they were no longer allowed to do anything that was seen as masculine,” she explained. “ These are women who, through boxing, start to find their own way to exert their power.” First- time dire ctor Jeremy Patterson said he was drawn to the script immediately when he read it last year. “It’s very rare that you find a play that forefronts four female leads in which they

in Rome and returned to the United States, ministering to people of all races, especially former slaves in Chicago. Tolton viewed the Catholic Church as an antidote to discrimination, emphasizing that he learned forgiveness for his persecutors through the church. The play will be presented by St. Luke Productions, a company that creates live dramas, films, radio shows and more. Gerald Nikolaus, program coordinator, first learned about St. Luke Productions in 2013 when he was looking for production companies that specialized in quality Christian-themed shows. “Our uniquely beautiful English Gothic church, with its 60-foot-high nave ceiling, had shown in the past that it was the perfect religious theatrical venue,” he said. It took seven years for Nikolaus to bring the first St. Luke show to the church, when “Faustina” was performed just before the

ety of Amer ican Fight Directors, Cuer has extensive experience staging fights, but this play presented a new challenge. “There’s an array of basic weaponr y you typically use, and boxing is not on that list,” he said. “I had to do a lot of research on the sport.” He watched YouTube videos, including a match from 1902, the oldest recorded boxing match he could find, and learned all he could about how the sport was conducted in the late 1800s. Nickel hopes audiences will come away from the play with a new appreciation for the women’s stories, which are based on historical truth. “There are moments of levity in this play, and there are sad moments,” she said. “There are people who don’t make it through, but you also see women winning.” “The Sweet Science of Bruising” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, Feb. 16, 17, 23 and 24, as well as on Thursday, Feb. 22. It will also be performed at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 18 and 25. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www .susquehannastage.com.

Maytown from pg 3 Jim and his wife, Diane, have lived in their house in “Chickentown” for more than 50 years. Jim noted that no one has been able to provide a full answer for how the area of East Donegal Township got its unique name. Jim has been able to trace the history of his property, finding deeds dating to the 1860s and an appearance of the original brick house on a Marietta map from the 1850s. After living in a house for 51 years, you just start to fill it up,” said Jim, who noted that the couple enjoys collecting antiques, period furniture and early folk art.
