Born in New Jersey and abandoned at age 2, Isaacson grew up in Hitler’s Germany. She survived the Nazi regime before she reached her teens. She left Germany for the United States just as the Iron Curtain was closing. The World War II Oral History Club meets on the last Tuesday of the month except December. All World War II veterans and family and anyone with an interest in WWII history are invited to attend. Anyone who is a WWII veteran or who has a family member or friend who would like to share their experiences may call 717-319-3430.
Volunteers at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 409 Cherry St., Columbia, will be hard at work in the kitchen in the coming weeks as the church’s 96th annual Fastnacht Bake commences. Fastnachts were traditionally made on Shrove Tuesday as a way to use up all of the fats in the kitchen before Lent, which runs from Ash Wednesday to Easter. At Holy Trinity, the Fastnacht Bake started with a group of ladies from the parish that decided to make and sell fastnachts as a fundraiser for the construction of the church building. Jim Knapp, who runs the fryer room, emphasized that the Holy Trinity fastnachts are made with yeast and a “very little bit” of lard and are fried to golden brown perfection in vegetable oil. “A true fastnacht cannot be a cake
doughnut,” noted Knapp. Plain and glazed options are available, but according to Knapp the glazed fastnachts are the bestsellers year after year. “The glaze is a top-secret recipe,” he added. All fastnachts must be preordered at www.holytrinitycolumbiapa.com. The website opened for online orders on Jan. 19 and will remain open until sold out. Plain or glazed fastnachts may be ordered by the dozen and picked up at the church on any of the bake days. Fastnachts will be baked on Monday, Feb. 24; Tuesday, Feb. 25; and Wednesday, Feb. 26. After that, fastnachts will be baked on Mondays and Wednesdays during the four weeks of Lent, with the last bake on Wednesday, March 25. Doors will open at 10 a.m. for pickup each day. Any not picked up by 1 p.m. will be sold on a firstcome, first-served basis. See Fastnachts pg 5

hoping to top that number, the focus for 2020 has shifted from setting a financial goal to having 10,000 unique donors - a hefty but achievable jump from last year’s 8,777 donors. “The focus on individual donors is shifting our marketing approach this year,” Given explained. “We are still shining a light on each of the organizations and what they do, but we are also doing a lot of spotlighting volunteers.” Organizations will also have the opportunity to publicize volunteer roles to encourage people to get involved in new ways throughout the year. A total of 285 teams from 235 high schools across Pennsylvania are competing in district and regional levels of the Statewide High School Mock Trial Competition sponsored by the Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) Young Lawyers Division. Pennsylvania’s mock trial program is now in its 37th year. During the competition, eight-member student teams are given the opportunity to argue both sides of a case in an actual courtroom before a judge. The students, who play the roles of lawyers, witnesses, plaintiffs, and defendants, are assisted by teacher coaches and lawyer advisers in preparing for the competition. Lawyers and community
leaders serve as jurors for the mock trials. The juries determine the winners in each trial based on the teams’ abilities to prepare their cases, present arguments, and follow court rules. The district and regional levels of the competition will continue throughout February and March. Then, 14 high school mock trial teams will advance to the PBA Statewide Mock Trial Championships, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28, in Harrisburg. The winning team will represent Pennsylvania in the national mock trial finals, which are scheduled for Wednesday to Saturday, May 6 to 9, in Evansville, Ind.
The Pennsylvania Bar Foundation, the charitable affiliate of the PBA, is providing funding support for the statewide competition. Serving as cochairs of the Mock Trial Executive Committee are Young Lawyers Division chair Jennifer Menichini of Pittston and former Young Lawyers Division chair Jonathan D. Koltash of Harrisburg. For more information about the 2020 PBA Statewide Mock Trial Championships and to read this year’s case, readers may visit www.pabar.org/site/ For-the-Public/Mock-Trial-Competition. Fastnachts from pg 1 “A lot of people freeze them to have all year,” remarked Carol Shive, who is in charge of the packaging and selling and has been volunteering with the bake for 20 years. Holy Trinity’s motto for its fastnachts is “A little bite of heaven,” revealing a hint of the love and pride that goes into the fried pastries. The labor-intensive process begins with volunteers who arrive at 4 a.m. each bake day to start hand-rolling, shaping and cutting the dough that has been prepared by the night crew, which carefully measures, weighs and mixes the ingredients. Additional volunteers arrive at 5:30 a.m. to operate the fryers, and others handle the sorting, counting and packing in preparation for pickup by the public.
Approximately 150 volunteers partake in the process. Last year, the crew made an astounding 6,775 dozen fastnachts - or 81,300 total. While many of the volunteers are members of the parish, still more people join in from throughout York and Lancaster counties representing a variety of churches. New volunteers are always welcome and needed. Anyone interested in helping may call Knapp at 717-475-3793. One more thing Knapp wants people placing orders to know: Regardless of the weather, the volunteers will be at Holy Trinity to make sure the fastnachts orders are fulfilled. “Rain or snow, it has to go on,” stated Knapp. “Period.”
Ballroom Social Dance Scheduled York USA Dance Chapter 3008 will hold a “Happy Hearts” ballroom social dance on Sunday, Feb. 23, at Alert Fire Hall, 3118 N. George St., Emigsville. A beginnerintermediate bolero lesson, taught by Mandy Iglesias, will be given from 3 to 4 p.m. Deb Eppley will play a ballroom, Latin and swing music variety for dancing and listening from 4 to 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided, and donations of appetizers, desserts and snacks are appreciated. Dancers of all ages and experience levels are welcome. To keep as many people on the dance floor as possible, a new feature, the Come Dance With Me Spot, has been added. This is intended to help dancers find a partner who knows the steps to a dance they want to
do, who is available to dance to a song they want to dance to or who can step in when their regular partner is not available to dance. Separate admission fees have been set for members, for guests and for students with ID. Included in the admission fee will be the dance, the music, refreshments and a door prize drawing. Information about area dance instructors, dance clubs and dances can be found in the Local Resources section under Pages at www.danceinyork.net. Other information about York USA Dance Chapter 3008 is available on the chapter Facebook page, by emailing yorkchapter3008@ gmail.com or by calling 717885-6370.
This summer, students entering grades nine through 12 are invited to take part in a new camp being offered by the Department of Business at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown. “Entrepreneurship With a Purpose” is set to take place on campus from Sunday to Friday, July 19 to 24. “This is a project we’ve been thinking of for several years,” explained Cristina E. Ciocirlan, department of business chair and associate professor of management. “The focus of the camp is on social enterprise, and (the students) will be using a market approach to solve community and social and environmental problems.” Countless examples of thriving social enterprises exist locally and globally, and Ciocirlan cited the Grameen Bank founded by social entrepreneur, banker, and economist Muhammad Yunus in Bangladesh as one of those. “That bank focused on giving small loans to female entrepreneurs in Bangladesh, and with those small loans they could build a business for themselves,” Ciocirlan explained. “The main difference between a social enterprise and a charity is that a charity gives away things without offering any compensation, but social enterprises actually charge a price for the good,” Ciocirlan described. “It’s the idea that (people) could use entrepreneurship to make the community or the environment better.” At camp, students will take a field trip to a local social enterprise to see the concept in action and ask questions. Another visit will be made to a local business accelerator and incubator to show campers first-hand about another avenue available for launching and growing a business. Ciocirlan noted that accelerators work with existing businesses to take their businesses to the next level, while incubators help entrepreneurs as they move from idea to launch. Campers will receive instruction on how to develop, refine, and test business ideas; how to create a business plan; how to market and finance an enterprise; and how to persuade people that their idea is worth pursuing. Students will form small teams to research needs and

develop an idea for a social enterprise. They will work toward presenting a live pitch on their projects to a team of judges in a friendlier “Shark Tank”-style format. Elizabethtown College offers both a minor and a concentration in entrepreneurship. Ciocirlan noted that the concept of social enterprise beautifully complements the college’s motto of “Educate for Service.” “Basically, this model says that we should use our knowledge and skills to benefit community,” summarized Ciocirlan. Lodging for the week will give students the opportunity to experience a taste of campus life as two students will be assigned to a room in the adult-chaperoned residence halls. Meals will be served in the all-you-can-eat college cafeteria. Evenings will allow time for recreation for campers with outdoor games, board games, movies, and more. The Bowers Center for Sports, Fitness, and Well-Being will be open for use, including the swimming pool. Registration for the camp is now open at www.etown.edu/ entrepreneur. An early bird discount rate with coupon code EARLYBIRD is available to anyone who applies by Sunday, March 1. Discounted rates are also available to children of Elizabethtown College alumni, faculty, and staff with coupon code BLUEJAY. Graduates of the camp will receive a $1,000 scholarship, renewable for four years, to attend Elizabethtown College. She invites homeowners to deeply engage with their land to maximize its potential in supporting dwindling bee, butterfly, and bird populations. As an artist-in-residence with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, she engages youths in a STEAM ecological landscape design process, where students research a critter of choice and learn how to fulfill the necessary habitat needs to support that critter in the students’ schoolyard. The Queen Street Branch presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints consists of (from left) branch clerk Vladimir Miranda, first counselor JosĂŠ JimĂŠnez, branch president Ă ngel DĂaz, and second counselor Ricardo UreĂąa. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced that its two Columbia Branches (Spanish) are now recognized as independent congregations of the Church. Located in York and Lancaster counties, these groups were divided into two independent Spanish-speaking branches and organized with new leaders on Oct. 29, 2019. The Spanish-speaking branches have grown enough to be recognized as independent congregations. Previously, the branches shared one branch president and two counselors. Now each has a branch president and two counselors. The former Columbia Branch (West) of York County, 2100 Hollywood Drive, was renamed the Queen Street Branch (Spanish). President Ă ngel DĂaz was sustained as branch president, replacing president Matthew Gogna. Diaz’s counselors are first counselor JosĂŠ JimĂŠnez and second counselor Ricardo UreĂąa. Vladimir Miranda is the branch clerk of finance for all of the York County units. The
church’s boundaries coincide with the Dover Branch and the Shrewsbury, York, and West York Ward boundaries. The second Spanish-speaking congregation, formerly called the Columbia Branch (East) of Lancaster County, is now named the King Street Branch (Spanish), 1210 E. King St., Lancaster. The King Street Branch’s boundaries coincide with the boundaries of the Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Lancaster, and Lititz wards. The King Street Branch was organized with president Carlos JuĂĄrez called as branch president. Isaac Galarza is the first counselor, and Jaime Castellanos is the second counselor. Serving as branch clerk of finance for all of Lancaster is Ignacio MartĂnez GarcĂa. These new leaders welcome friends from the community to attend Sunday services, service projects, socials, family history center events, and other meetings held throughout the week. Most meetings will be conducted in Spanish. For more information, readers may call 717398-9734.

LMHS To Present “Beauty And The Beast” Musical And Meet-And-Greet By Ann Mead Ash
When Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) musical director Dean Sauder chose the musical “Beauty and the Beast” for the school’s spring offering, he was not thinking about how aspects of the play would echo the school’s theme for the year of “Transformation,” but he was amazed to recognize how the two went hand-in-hand. “When we come to Christ, we are transformed,” noted Dean. “Belle sees the possibilities in (the Beast), and she doesn’t write

him off,” said Dean, adding that with the Beast’s rival, Gaston, the outside masks a less-attractive interior. “Are there possible Christian undertones?” he wondered. “It’s not a Christian story, but I don’t think it’s a far leap.” “Beauty and the Beast” will be produced at LMHS in the Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27; Friday, Feb. 28; and Saturday, Feb. 29. A matinee performance will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 1. In addition, a breakfast meetand-greet with the principal cast members will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22, in the school dining hall, beginning at 8:30 a.m. “(Attendees) can dance with Belle
and the Beast,” said Dean, who added that activities with other characters will be available to those who attend the ticketed event. Individuals who attend in costume will be able to purchase a discounted ticket to see the play. “Beauty and the Beast” is the tale of Belle, played by Becca Sauder, and the Beast, played by Noah Schnabel, who is really a prince trapped under a spell. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the spell will be broken, and he will become human again. Other principal characters include Isaac Kraenbring as Belle’s father, Maurice; Chadman Martin as Gaston; Isaac Harnish as Cogsworth, with Brendan
Johnson as his sidekick, Lumiere; and Ella Murray as Mrs. Potts. About a year ago, Dean saw a production of the show that put some unique twists on the story. The changes motivated him to take on the show, which he said can be an overwhelming task. “It’s a huge show in every aspect,” said Dean of helming the cast of 53. In addition to the challenges of vocals, sets, and costumes, the stage show includes several musical numbers not found in the movie. “They have added a number of beautiful ballads that enhance the story,” said Dean, who noted that many of the songs are sung by the Beast and that Belle and Maurice sing a duet. “There’s a big production

number called ‘Human Again,’ where all the objects dream of what it would be like to be human again,” said Dean. To enhance sound, the pit orchestra will be located on stage behind the action. “Beauty and the Beast” brings many inanimate objects to life, and the LMHS production will take that a step further by giving additional inanimate life forms a chance to move. “In the forest, there will be actors that portray trees, and the enchanted rose will also be portrayed by a live actress,” said Dean. Cast members reported that they are enjoying the challenges of the show, with Becca commenting that the music is vocally interesting. Harnish is having fun developing the character of the uptight Cogsworth, as is Martin with the over-the-top villain Gaston. Murray is relishing perfecting her British accent. As the Beast, Schnabel is working to portray a frightening creature that sings. “We have the idea that the beast is dark and brooding, but when he sings, it’s a high range,” he noted. The students are also considering the effect the show will have on audiences. “A lot of the principals have come up with unique ways to add to their character,” said Murray. “I hope the people who see it appreciate the new takes we brought to our (roles).” Tickets for the play may be purchased at www.lancastermennonite.org under the Fine Arts tab, by calling 717-740-2456, or by emailing boxoffice@lancaster mennonite.org. A discounted student price will be offered, and tickets to the matinee performance will also be discounted.
