Craley Cemetery Seeks
Cleanup Help
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“We are a small organization, but I think we do a darn good job of keeping this cemetery looking good,” said Don Fake, president of the Craley Cemetery Association. The organization is asking for the community’s help in continuing to keep the property looking great. A cleanup session will be
held on Saturday, March 25, beginning at 9 a.m. at the cemetery, Abels Road, Wrightsville.
Fake estimates that the cemetery dates back more than a century. He noted that over the years, the space has expanded to now include four sections. “Section one is all tombstones. Section two is plaques,” he stated, noting that sections three and four include both types of memorials.

St. Peter Will Serve up Fish Fry
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
TheLenten Fish Fry has become a well-known event for St. Peter Catholic Church, and the tradition will continue this year beginning on Friday, Feb. 24. It will continue on Fridays through March 31 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Center, Second and Union streets, Columbia.
“Forty-four years ago, three women started selling fish sandwiches and french fries,” said Claire Storm, publicity chair of the event. “It grew to be very popular since (the parishioners of St. Peter Church) abstain from eating meat on Fridays during Lent. Today, we have a wide variety of fish platters and other selections on our menu.”
Dine-in or takeout options will be available, and the menu will include platters of one or two crab cakes, baked cod, fried fillet of fish, fried shrimp, fish sticks, fried scallops, fried oysters and breaded fried clam strips. Macaroni and
cheese, french fries, stewed tomatoes, a vegetable, coleslaw and a dinner roll are included in the price of the platter. A la carte items include a crab cake sandwich, a fried fish fillet sandwich, an oyster sandwich, french fries, macaroni and cheese, stewed tomatoes, coleslaw and cheesy bread sticks with marinara sauce. Quarts, pints and bowls of homemade soups will be available each week as well. On Feb. 24 and March 17, potato soup will be served. On March 3, Manhattan clam chowder will be offered. On March 10 and 31, cream of crab will be on the menu, and on March 24, minestrone will be featured. A variety of individually wrapped baked goods made by the women of the parish will also be available for purchase as well as a variety of drinks each Friday.
The fish fry is a fundraiser for the Parish Council of Catholic Women, Storm said, noting that proceeds will benefit various activities in the parish, Our Lady of the Angels
Catholic School, Water for Life and other nonprofits. Congregation members begin prepping each meal the day before, making crab cakes and setting up, Storm remarked.
The men of the parish assist with the setup, cleanup, heavy lifting, washing dishes and working in the kitchen.
Storm said her favorite menu item is the crab cake sandwich.
“Last year, we did not have crab at all due to the exorbitant price of crab, but it is back this year,” she commented. She also noted that she will be making the cream of crab soup offered on some of the Fridays.
Reservations are not required for the fish fry. There are two parking lots at the church as well as parking on the street. “Come and enjoy a delicious meal with your family and friends in a relaxed atmosphere,” Storm said. “At the end of the week, it is just a pleasure to sit and enjoy good food that you didn’t have to prepare.”
A Hands-On Way to Learn About Careers
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Starting in March, Columbia Public Library will help children explore careers in a unique and hands-on way. On Wednesday, March 1, the library will host Alixe Ingoglia Hemerly, owner of The Flour Child, for a new program that brings local businesses and library patrons together. Although that program, which will take place at 10:30 a.m., is part of Homeschool Happenings at the library, plans are in the works to expand the sessions to the general public.
Heather Beury, operations manager
of the library, came up with the idea for the program. “The idea is to partner with local businesses,” Beury said. “I am trying to reach out to the community and see how we can bring them in and educate the kids about what they do.”
At the March 1 event, bakery owner Ingoglia Hemerly will talk about her background, including her degree in pastry arts, and the children will be able to decorate cupcakes. “With each session, we’d like to offer a hands-on project, something that they might typically do in a day of work at the job,” Beury explained.

She noted that she has a son in ninth grade who is starting to consider life after high school, and he inspired the idea for this program. “I wanted to show him that there are opportunities out there if college doesn’t fit,” she said. “It’s OK not to choose college. There are other paths. College is only one option.”
She’s looking at partnering with a local handyman business, an electrician and a plumber for future sessions. “We’d love to partner with a locally owned pizza place who could show the children how they run the business, and then we could have a pizza party,” she remarked. Her goal is to expand the program beyond homeschoolers possibly by this summer. “We would also be open to having kids come to a local business, taking a field trip to see what the business does,” Beury said.
Library director Lisa Greybill said the program is a winwin for the library and the town of Columbia. “People need to be aware of what
Columbia has to offer,” she commented. “We’re expanding, and we’re undergoing a renaissance. When we partner with businesses in the community, that encourages children to get involved in their community.” She said she envisions a possible partnership with the thrift stores in Columbia, teaching children that they can donate clothing or other items they no longer want rather than throwing them away.
The career-themed library program is geared toward children ages 7 to 12, and Greybill noted that it will offer a fun experience even if that’s all the kids take away from it. “It’s going to make them think, ‘Is this a career that might interest me?’” she said. “And if it’s not, at least they got to decorate a cupcake.”
For more information on the March 1 program, visit https://columbiapublic library.org. Local business owners who would like to participate in future programs may contact the library at info@columbiapubliclibrary.org.

The cemetery association recently inducted new officers, who include Fake also as treasurer, along with Gary Olphin as vice president and George Leber III as secretary. Fake emphasized that anyone who owns a burial plot in the cemetery is eligible to become a member of the cemetery board, and the group is looking for new members.
Being a part of the board requires minimal commitment, he said. “We have an annual meeting, and sometimes, we meet twice a year if we have something big to discuss,” Fake shared. “When we have a big expense, we like to get the board together to make a rational decision about how to spend the money.” Recent projects have included replacing a mower and purchasing the property previously owned by the Craley Fire Department, which the cemetery association bought last August. “The original fire hall was built in

1926, but when the current fire hall was built, the old one was just being used for storage,” Fake said. “We purchased the property so we could expand the cemetery.”
The board members are responsible for mowing the grass in the cemetery and selling burial lots. “We are an allvolunteer organization,” Fake remarked. “All of our funds are raised through lot sales, and we still have lots available.” Both two-space and four-space lots are available.
He encourages anyone to come out and help with the cleanup session, noting that participants will remove dead flower arrangements and collect worn-out American flags. The flags will be properly retired at the American Legion Post 469 in Wrightsville.

Friendship, Fellowship and Fun
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
In a room at Masonic Villages in Elizabethtown, a group of boys are bonding. They’re learning the importance of friendship, the significance of ceremony and the benefits of community service. They’re all members of DeMolay Elizabethtown, a chapter of DeMolay International.
The group is open to boys ages 12 to 21, and the chapter meets on the first and third Sundays of the month. “I like doing this because it’s a brotherhood opportunity for young men to get together for service, fun events and to support charities,” said Kenton Green, who is the master councilor for the chapter. As Kenton explained, one boy is chosen by his peers for this leadership role and serves a six-month term. He runs the meetings, helped by the rest of the council, which includes Todd Schwartz Jr. as senior councilor and Rusty Armstrong as junior councilor. During the meetings, the boys are guided by a roster of advisers, including Gary Schwartz, Todd’s grandfather; Dave Berry; and Jesse Spence.
“The major charity we support is Children’s Dyslexia Centers,” said Kenton, a 15year-old who attends Solanco High School. At a recent meeting, a group of boys worked on plans for Dodgeball for Dyslexia, a tournament that will be held on Saturday, May 13. Members of DeMolay have also volunteered at the Taste of Western Lancaster County at Elizabethtown Public Library, the Community Cupboard food bank and the Elizabethtown Fair. Upcoming fun
outings for the group include bowling, a weekend cabin trip and a Barnstormers baseball game.
As Gary explained, DeMolay began in 1919 in Kansas City, Mo. The first chapter started in Pennsylvania in 1923. The organization is named for Jacques DeMolay, the last grand master of the Knights Templar, and it was started by Frank S. Land. Land and other organizers created a book that each chapter uses as the structure for meetings, and all DeMolay chapters emphasize seven core values: filial love, reverence, courtesy, comradeship, fidelity, cleanness and patriotism. Meetings feature opening and closing ceremonies, business items such as bills and budgeting and discussion of upcoming events.
“I am in this club for the privilege of service,” said Kenton’s brother, Holden, who is 18. “DeMolay offers a prime opportunity to do that. This is a learning opportunity to serve, to practice and improve your public speaking

and to grow in your leadership skills. It’s also fun to hang around other like-minded people your age.”
For Todd, the organization has provided not just an opportunity to have fun, but also a time for personal growth. “DeMolay helped me open up more,” said Todd, 19. “When I first joined, I was very shy and quiet, and I can say that through DeMolay, I have changed very much.”
Rusty, a 15-year-old Solanco student, joined DeMolay at Kenton’s urging. “I would encourage anyone who is interested to learn more,” he said. “You’ll learn so much from this group, you’ll have a lot of fun and you’ll make a lot of friends.”
There are currently 40 boys in the Elizabethtown chapter of DeMolay, but about 15 regularly attend meetings. Boys attend from all over Lancaster and surrounding counties, and the group is looking for new members. For more information on DeMolay, contact Kenton at 717-333-3781 or kentonmgreen@gmail.com.
Gallery Posts Irish-Inspired Arts Events
The Square Halo Gallery within The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster, will host an Irishinspired show in March and April.
The spring exhibit will feature printmaking from Lancaster County illustrator, graphic designer and curator Ned Bustard. His two new books are “Saint Patrick the Forgiver,” a children’s book published Feb. 21, and “33: Reflections on the Gospel of Saint John,” a book of Irish poetry with art inspired by the well-known “Book of Kells,” a manuscript Gospel book in Latin.
On First Friday, March 3, a book release party for “Saint Patrick the Forgiver” will be
held from 6 to 9 p.m. at the gallery. The story highlights Patrick, a bishop of Ireland who was not actually Irish. Combining Patrick’s words from his Confessions with a few of the legends about him, the retelling teaches families about the life of the real saint and helps them discover a story of love and forgiveness along the way.
The Row House will host a lecture on St. Patrick at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 17. Graham Dennis will share a tale that challenges many assumptions about Patrick. Tickets may be purchased at a discounted price in advance or full price at the door. Row House members plus one guest will be admitted for free. For tickets and more details, visit
The merger will enhance WMP’s already knowledgeable management team, combining more than 100 years of experience and more than 80 manufacturing personnel dedicated to providing highquality products and attentive customer service.
