St. Peter’s Catholic Church, South Second and Union streets, Columbia, will begin its Lenten Friday Fish Fry events on Friday, Feb. 28, in the Parish Center. Food will be available to eat in or take out every Friday from Feb. 28 through April 3 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The events are open to the public, and parking is available adjacent to the Parish Center. Forty-one years ago, Joanne Haberstroh, Jane Mable, and Kit Seibert came up with the idea to hold a fish fry every Friday during Lent. The event quickly became popular not only with parishioners but also with other community members. The fish fry has been held each year for the past forty-one years. The menu has grown and changed but still features a variety of fish platters and other nonmeat dishes prepared by the women of the parish with assistance from the men, who help serve and clean up each week. Included in the price of the fish platters are coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, a vegetable, french fries, and coffee or tea. Homemade soups, weekly specials, a la carte items, and desserts are also available. Some of the more popular items are the fish sandwiches and the baked haddock platter.

ence Jessie has ever faced. “I’m really excited and really nervous all at the same time,” she said. DCA headmaster Michael Myers is looking forward to hosting Huckabee. “He is a great example of a Christian who took his Christian faith seriously, even to the point of taking it to the political realm,” Myers commented. He described Huckabee as warm and welcoming, noting that those characteristics serve Huckabee well in his role as a pastor. “He’s a great exemplar of (passing on our faith to the next generation), and he can challenge us with credibility,” Myers added. “People tend to listen to him respectfully because he’s respectful.” The program will also include performances by DCA choral groups led by Lindsey Stauffer. While the singers are primarily in the upper grades, 15 members of the lower school’s Joyful Noise group will join them on stage. Additionally, a display of artifacts and media from the Faith and Liberty Discovery Center will be available for attendees to view. The center is opening on Independence Mall in Philadelphia this year and is sponsored by the American Bible Society. As the April 17 event is marking the 10th anniversary of the Remember America Speaker Series, a special video presentation that includes clips of previous speakers will be part of the program. Becker related that DCA has hosted more than 18,000 people at series events. “We completely credit God with the ability to walk with the community,” Becker said. “We’re blessed and grateful that Lancaster has embraced this event and the school,” Myers added. Tickets and sponsorships for the Remember America Speaker Series event are available at www.dayspringchristian.com or by calling the school at 717-285-2000.

DSAA, which also now stands for Delivering Supportive Approaches to Addiction to encompass the organization’s goal to reach people well beyond the Donegal area, moved into its new space at 78 E. DSAA is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to noon on Thursdays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Free computer access, coffee and snacks, hygiene products, and gently used clothing are available for people as needed. DSAA staff and trained volunteers are also available to listen and talk and to point people in the direction of helpful resources. “The goal here is to make recovery commonplace. Recovery should be expected, because anyone that is struggling with addiction can recover, and it’s becoming easier to find resources,” Emminger shared. Providing a space for connection is an important part of the recovery process, she added, so that people have aftercare when leaving a treatment facility. DSAA aims to offer that as well as consistent support for people with loved ones facing an addiction. Programs centered on education, prevention, and awareness are also offered. ministry, a prison after-care program, and summer camp scholarships provided to local children and youths affected by incarceration. “Most people know us from the stores, and they don’t necessarily know there’s a significant ministry going on,” remarked Newswanger. “Most of what we do happens behind bars and barbed wire, so no one sees it.” Seventeen chaplains are currently on staff with Jubilee and spend time with inmates at 10 prison facilities in Pennsylvania. That time is split between leading worship services and Bible studies and recovery groups, teaching life skills classes, and offering one-on-one counseling to men and women. “I often tell people our chaplains are very much like missionaries,” Newswanger said. “Prison is certainly a place where the Gospel is needed.” Taking the message of salvation and freedom available through Jesus Christ into prisons was how Jubilee got its start in 1972. “There was a revival, and a group of young people felt called to go into the Lebanon County Prison,” relayed Newswanger. What began at the prison with prayer and young adults boldly sharing testimonies of what God had done in their lives grew to include a thrift store in Lebanon to generate funds to support chaplains to go into area prisons. Several other store locations were launched as the entire ministry multiplied. The after-care program began in 1993 as a way to purposefully support people coming out of prison and transitioning back into society. “We’ve been doing reentry since before it was called re-entry,” Newswanger said with a smile. Men may apply to be part of the program, which offers group housing with faith-based and life skills classes to attend, as well as job training and work at the Lebanon

thrift store. Newswanger described the program as very structured and designed to help each individual meet specific goals. “The change can happen, and we see it all the time,” stated Newswanger. “The most fascinating thing about this ministry is how someone can go from committing whatever crime they did and being at a very low point and then seeing the transformation that can happen if they choose to follow Christ.” Newswanger considers it an honor to watch men who have completed the after-care program then go on to become a successful part of the workforce, own businesses, pastor churches, and raise healthy families. For children and youths who are or have been impacted by incarceration, Jubilee offers one-week summer camp scholarships to local faith-based camps every year. The scholarships - which are in the average amount of $400 - are available to any young person ages 8 to 17 whose parents are currently in a prison served by one of Jubilee’s chaplains or are being served through Jubilee’s after-care program. The idea is that each individual will be able to relax and have fun at camp and be exposed to the Gospel. “The tragedy for the kids (who have an incarcerated parent) is that either mom or dad isn’t there. That means they are forced to grow up fast and have to become a parent to themselves or their siblings at a young age,” said Newswanger. “Camp is great because it gives kids a chance to be a kid.” To donate to support Jubilee’s summer camp scholarship program, readers may visit www.jub.org/summercamp. More information about Jubilee, including details on other ways to contribute financially or volunteer at its stores, is available at www.jub.org.

LCCTC from pg 1 More than 200 students from school districts and independent schools throughout the region converged on the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center’s (LCCTC) Brownstown, Mount Joy, and Willow Street campuses on Feb. 14 to compete in the District 4 SkillsUSA Competitions. Career and Technology Education students brought their skills, experience, and techniques to take part in dozens of different competition categories from Automotive Skills Technology to Criminal Justice and from Job Interview Skills to Dental Assisting. The day of competitions culminated at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster, where winners were announced and awards were conferred. Many LCCTC students competed in the district-level competitions at Franklin County Career and Technology Center on Jan. 17; students from a SkillsUSA-hosting CTC often compete at an adjacent CTC in order to avoid home team bias and due to the fact that not all CTCs offer every SkillsUSA competition category. Tide Tops LMH, Qualifies For State Tournament by Sam Valentin
Hungry. That is the first word head coach Kerry Glover said after coming out of the locker room postgame last Monday, February 17. It is tough to tell if he was talking about being hungry for more, hungry in general or hungry for some Hershey’s chocolate during the state playoffs which the Tide qualified for with their win over Lancaster Mennonite in the District 3-3A quarterfinal. The coach and boys are not quiet about their desire to hang more banners and this win allows them to continue their journey towards their goals. “We have goals to make it to Hershey,” Glover said. Even though the Tide came out on
top once again it was a slow start that saw them miss seven shots and down five points before senior leader Matt McCleary finally put them on the board over halfway through the first quarter. It sparked a 9-0 Tide run and Columbia never really looked back as they picked up their third win against the Blazers, 68-58. The Tide came out with plenty of energy and effort but really could not get anything going early in front of a packed house that was loud from start to finish. The Tide went into the second quarter down one point but Kerry Glover took a tough take in the lane to put the Tide up for good early in the second quarter. Columbia pushed the lead all the way to ten with two minutes remaining in the first half, as the Blazers had
no answer for the zone defense they threw their way. Coach Glover said he did not use the zone very often this year and wanted to pull it out as a trick up his sleeve for the playoffs. He also alluded that he may have a few other tricks he is waiting to pull out. The Tide took a 37-22 lead into halftime after they closed the second quarter on a 15-5 run. This was the biggest lead of the night for the Tide. Luis Cruz showed off his fast hands and quick feet to put in a fast break layup to start the run. During this run Brady Smith hit a corner three, and, on the next possession Ryan Redding hit an opposite corner three to push the lead to 14. Michael Poole then stops and pops a 17-foot jumper to beat the buzzer ending the first half. Two minutes into the third quarter Poole hits another jumper as Glover comes away with a steal on the other end. McCleary hits a few foul shots in the quarter and Cruz made his presence felt down low as he was all over the boards. Poole crosses his man up to hit a free throw line jumper, and Glover adds a pair of free throws with a minute remaining in the quarter. They end the quarter up 52-41. Midway through the final quarter the Blazers did come within seven points but that is the closest they would get as the Tide coasted into a win. Coach Glover was not too happy
about the coasting as he admits he is a tough guy to please. He thought the boys were settling since they knew they could just come back down on the offensive end and score. “Expect the game to be tough, it is hard to beat someone three times in a season let alone a sectional opponent,” Glover said about finishing the game even though he did not like trading baskets. “X’s and O’s went out the window and guys needed to step up ad make plays.” The fourth quarter came down to foul shots as the Tide clearly hit enough to put the game on ice. Smith finished an easy lay in to put the Tide back up nine. Glover ripped a board and found a streaking Poole for another easy lay in. Glover then goes coast to coast for a bucket and the next possession he stops and pops in the lane to put the Tide up 15 points. The rest of the game was the Tide at the line. With about twenty seconds left on the clock, Poole and Glover pass the ball to each other and the whole gym stands up, as they know this one is over and they have ended the Blazer’s season. McCleary admits it crossed his mind that this could have been his final basketball game but is happy to continue his career while admitting he feels bad for Lancaster Mennonite
but they are onto the next round. “(McCleary) deserves big moments,” Glover mentioned about the importance of McCleary. “I trust him in big moments. I trust him on the court. No moment is too big for
him.” All five of Columbia’s starters finished in double digits during the quarterfinal victory. McCleary lead the way with 18 points. See Tide pg 7

Tide from pg 6 “Senior leadership,” McCleary said of sort of carrying the load of late. “ I have been here with coach Kerry for four years so if something’s not working we need to get it done and I’m going to try to do what I can.” Glover finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Cruz got the quiet double- double with 11 points and 12 boards. Poole started slow but ended with 11 points, three steals, and three blocks. The lengthy Smith scored ten points and pulled seven rebounds. Redding also made a key three pointer as his only points off the bench. This victory advanced Columbia to the district semifinals for the sixth time in nine years so something they’re accustomed to doing. It will be the second time under coach Glover who has been at the helm for four years. So this is some
new territory for most guys except Matt McCleary who, as a freshman, was called up to sit varsity for a few games in 2017. Although Glover admits he believes he only played miniscule minutes in the playoffs, so this is uncharted water for the Tide. Glover seems confident that his team has grown in many ways throughout this year and hopes to make a run to polish off this already impressive campaign that has them undefeated in the section and 17-7 overall. Although McCleary has made it very clear that he is focused on the basketball season, he was offered scholarships by Delaware Valley and Lock Haven for football. Redding is also waiting to make his decision. He has looked at school such as Lock Haven and Millersville.

One of the goals for every high school wrestler in central Pennsylvania is to wrestle into the postseason and once there wrestle well enough to earn a trip to Hershey for the District 3 Championship Tournament. For the Eastern York wrestling team that meant their annual trip to Susquenita High School for the District 3-2A Sectional Tournament. All any of the 11 Golden Knight grapplers that made the trip had to do to punch their ticket to Chocolate town was finish in the top six of his weight class. Three different Golden Knights managed to pick up an invite to the district championship fronted by bronze medal winner Isaac Buser. The junior posted a 4-1 mark on his way to that 182-pound bronze medal with the only loss coming to silver medal winner, Hogan Swenski of Bermudian Springs. Buser collected two wins on either side of that semifinal loss with all four coming via pinfall. The first and third wins came opposite Trinity’s Jacob Shull with Buser ending their Round of 16 match at the 1:17 mark and their second clash that came in the consolation bracket at the 1:14 mark. Buser took down his quarterfinal
opponent, Fairfield’s Kyle Davis, in under a minute, finishing things up just 53-seconds after the opening whistle. The second victory over Shull gave Buser his shot at bronze and he capitalized by pinning Hunter Smith of James Buchanan just before the end of the first period. Nate Dandridge’s time in Duncannon included one fewer match but his ticket to Hershey counts after his fourth-place finish in the 285-pound bracket. That one fewer match was thanks to a Round of 16 bye which dropped Dandridge into the quarterfinals opposite Newport’s Caleb Lesher. Dandridge needed just 11 seconds to dispatch Lesher and earn a spot in the semifinals. Upper Dauphin’s Peyton Wentzel proved to be too much, building a 6-2 lead over Dandridge, before earning the pinfall victory early in the third period. Dandridge needed just 20 seconds to get by Susquenita’s Theodore Beers in their consolation tilt but he was unable to outlast Shaun Reed of James Buchanan in the consolation finals. That sent Dandridge to fourth place on the medal stand with a 2-2 mark over the twoday event. The final Eastern York wrestler that kept his season alive did so in the 152pound bracket. Kaleb Crean went 3-3 to come home with a sixth-place

Fromm 42-seconds into the second period of their consolation meeting before falling to Cole Mosier of Bermudian Springs in his ensuing match. The remaining sextet of Golden Knight grapplers were unable to taste victory while in Duncannon over the two days. Camron Weidlich lost his 113-pound matches to Charlie Aber of Trinity and Reed Kyler of Susquenita by a combined 16-4 tally. Logan Crean saw his season end with pinfall losses to Jaxen Zimmerman (Susquenita) and Dalton Kirby (Hanover) in the 126-pound bracket. Euguene Courtright (132) experienced the double pinfall exit courtesy of Gavyn Stewart of James Buchanan and Delone Catholic’s Justin Emeigh while Dillon Mealey experienced the same in the 160-pound bracket. Mealey’s losses came at the hands of Littlestown’s Jacob Yealy and Kennard-Dale’s Avery Cummings. Brock Bolton dropped his Round of 16 match with Jayden Barrick of Boiling Springs via tech fall before bowing out of the 170-pound bracket with a pinfall loss to Bermudian Springs’ Jhonathan Balek. Magnus Krissinger, wrestling at 195, suffered pinfall losses to East Pennsboro’s Henry Hartpence-Campos and West Perry’s Jeremy Hockenberry-Folk coming after a Round of 16 bye.

medal. Things started well for Crean as he manhandled Biglerville’s Nicolas Azevedo in the Round of 16, building a 14-1 lead before ending the match with a pinfall at the 3:20 mark. That setup Crean’s first battle with Upper Dauphin’s Kade Matter which ended with Crean on the wrong side of an 82 final. He ripped off two straight wins to stave off elimination starting with a first period pinfall over Trinity’s Lucas Puig. Another first period pinfall followed, this one coming 1:43 into Crean’s match with Aiden Metzger of Boiling Springs. A loss to Halifax’s Bryce Enders ended Crean’s run and setup a rematch with Matter. The Upper Dauphin senior posted another win, this one by a 13-0 final, to claim fifth and leave Crean with sixth place. Only two of the remaining eight Eastern York grapplers managed to pick up a win in the sectional round. Zach Dice took out West Perry’s Jeremy Jeffries with a 5-1 final in their Round of 16 bout. He exited the tournament after a quarterfinal loss to Michael Duggan of Boiling Springs and a consolation loss to Louie Frisenda of Susquenita. Hailu Barrow earned his victory in the consolation round after dropping his opening match with Zander Conrad of Halifax via an 8-0 final. Barrow managed to pin Kennard-Dale’s Oliver

The
presentation will be followed by group discussion and interaction, facilitated by Diocesan lay catechist Bob Moseback. The schedule is as follows: March 4 at St. John Episcopal, 239 E. themed “Made For This,” at locations in Lancaster County and Philadelphia. People will be treated to entertainment by celebrity sand artist Joe Castillo, who appeared on season seven of “America’s Got Talent.” Castillo will present an artistic interpretation of a life impacted by the efforts of kindHuman. Foltz shared that organizers chose the theme “Made For This” because it speaks to the purpose and ability of all people to be difference makers and impact the world together. The Lancaster event will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, March 13, at SUPPLY, 280 S. Oak St., Manheim. In addition to entertainment by Castillo, the evening will include an open bar and a buffet dinner catered by Simply From Scratch. Signature cocktails incorporating Humankind beverages will also be served at the bar. The Philadelphia event is planned for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, at Merion Tribute House, 625 Hazelhurst Ave., Merion Station. Attendees in Philadelphia will experience the same format and entertainment as those at the Lancaster event, with a catered meal from Catering by Rich. To purchase tickets for a set fee to either event, interested individuals may visit www.behumankind.com/fundraiser by Monday, March 2. Anyone with questions may email megan@ humankindwater.org.

serves as vice president of marketing for Humankind and as director of missions for the kindHuman Foundation, the nonprofit organization set up in conjunction with the company specifically to provide wells or water filtration or rain catchment systems to communities where people desperately need it. One hundred percent of net profits from Humankind sales goes toward funding clean water projects. Foltz explained that every bottle of Humankind Water that is purchased helps make it possible to get clean water to one person for 100 days. “Similarly, every gallon of our lemonade and tea that is sold gets 50 gallons of clean drinking water to people in need,” Foltz noted. Based in Manheim, Humankind is actively involved in projects in Uganda and the Dominican Republic and has worked in Malawi, Tanzania, India, and Haiti in the past. Humankind has also provided clean water as part of disaster relief efforts in locations including Nepal, Texas, and Flint, Mich. “While our focus is primarily in meeting international needs, we are more than happy to help locally as needed,” commented Foltz. For the past four years, the kindHuman Foundation has hosted a fundraising event for the public, but this year organizers have upped the ante and are hosting not one, but two fundraisers,
