Culinary competition to benefit animal shelter

If you enjoy cooking, competition and cats, Chopped for Charity is perfect for you. The event will benefit the Columbia Animal Shelter and will be held on Saturday, March 30, at John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St., Wrightsville, beginning at 6 p.m.

Like the long-running Food Network cooking show “Chopped,” the event will challenge contestants to prepare a meal in 30 minutes featuring items contained in a mystery box, said Tammy Jalbert, director of the shelter. The contestants may use other food items and ingredients available in a common pantry, but the dishes must incorporate each mystery ingredient.

Jalbert got the idea for the event after attending a similar competition and fundraiser for Open Table, an organization that fights hunger, while visiting family in Massachusetts. “I had the chance to sit at the table with the people putting on that event, and I thought, ‘This is something really cool and it’s not being done around here,’” she recalled. She noted that the organizers of the Open Table event, which has been happening for more than a decade, graciously offered tips on the logistics of hosting a similar fundraiser.

Chopped for Charity will begin with a buffet dinner prepared by John Wright Restaurant, followed by a short program focusing on the work of Columbia Animal Shelter. The culinary competition will begin about 7:30 p.m. The chefs who will be competing are Mike Weierbach from Get Smok’d

BBQ, Larry Williams from WebstaurantStore and Austin Hallet from John Wright Restaurant.

There will be four guest judges for the event, Jalbert said. Details are still being finalized, but one of the judges will be Diane Dayton and the fourth judge’s seat will be auctioned off at the event.

“This will be followed by a live auction featuring six food experiences ranging from farm experiences to private dinners with local chefs in your home,” she stated. “There will be a

fund-a-need paddle auction where, during the bidding process, I or the veterinarian will discuss just what their dollars will be able to do for the shelter.”

Local businesses will provide ingredients for the mystery box, she said, noting that the “Chopped” TV show always has a twist, typically challenging contestants to make a cohesive dish out of seemingly unrelated or unusual ingredients.

“It will be challenging for the

“We love our town, celebrate its roots and want you to get excited about history,” said Suzanne Nace-Jones, first vice president and co-chair of the fundraising committee for Historic Wrightsville Inc. “We sincerely appreciate the

support we receive from our community.”

Historic Wrightsville is hoping for a great turnout when the organization hosts its first Breakfast with the Easter Bunny. The event will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 243 Hellam St., Wrightsville, on Saturday, March 16, from 8 to 11 a.m.

When they started planning this year’s banquet and benefit auction, the committee members at Susquehanna Waldorf School chose a name - Gather Around - that reflects the school’s mission.

“This is a message of togetherness as we gather to support Susquehanna Waldorf School and the community that relies on us,” explained Courtney

Gather Around will be held on Saturday, March 2, from 6 to 10 p.m. at John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St., Wrightsville.

The evening will feature a catered meal by John Wright Restaurant, live music, a wine toss, and both a silent and a live auction.

The menu will include pancakes, bacon, sausage, juice and coffee, as well as a variety of pastries.

“Besides breakfast, there will be a visit from the Easter Bunny, crafts and various activities for kids of all ages. And, of course, eggs!” Nace-Jones said.

The idea for the Easter Bunny breakfast came about after the board members of Historic Wrightsville brainstormed ways to reach the community.

“There are some fundraisers we do annually because they are tried and true, such as tea parties, but we are always game to try new things,” Nace-Jones explained.

“Because Wrightsville has many civic groups and churches who need to raise funds, we always try to keep that in mind when planning Historic Wrightsville fundraisers. We are here to support each other.”

Proceeds from the Easter Bunny breakfast will go toward the promotion and preservation of historic sites, structures, artifacts and memorabilia of Wrightsville Borough and surrounding areas.

Historic Wrightsville maintains a museum, located at 309 Locust St., and the Burning of the Bridge Diorama, located at 124 Hellam St. in Wrightsville.

“It is our hope and desire to promote community spirit by enriching the social, educational and cultural life of our community,” Nace-Jones said. “So much time and detail is devoted to acquire, restore and maintain our artifacts that are irreplaceable.”

Tickets for Breakfast with the Easter Bunny are available by calling 717881-3921 or the Historic Wrightsville Museum at 717-252-1169. Preorders are preferred, but tickets will be available at the door as space allows.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the school, located at 15 W. Walnut St., Marietta. Kokus explained that Susquehanna Waldorf School, which serves students in prekindergarten through eighth grade, is affectionately known as “The School by the River.”

“Our independent school is dedicated to fostering a deep and enduring passion for learning, with a focus on nurturing the holistic development of each child through their educational journey,” she stated. “What makes us truly unique is our adherence to the principles of Waldorf education. Our approach goes beyond academics, emphasizing the development of the whole child. Our curriculum integrates the arts, movement and experiential learning, time in nature, ensuring a well-rounded education that nurtures creativity, critical thinking and a sense of wonder.” Waldorf education began in the early 20th century, based on the principles of

artist and scientist Rudolf Steiner. Today, there are more than 1,000 Waldorf schools in 64 countries around the world.

Susquehanna Waldorf School has been serving students in York, Lancaster and Dauphin counties for more than 35 years, and it currently enrolls more than 130 students. It relies on events like Gather Around to continue providing services to students.

“The proceeds will support the gap between our tuition and the amount it takes to run the school,” Kokus shared. “We also have a special appeal to support increasing the funding for our professional development fund, which is used to fund the many trainings our teachers attend, some of which are held out of the country.”
