Old Town Night will highlight Civil War history

Civil War history will come to life when Historic Wrightsville Inc. hosts Old Town Night with Scott Mingus. The event will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 17, at Wrightsville Hope Church on the corner of Fourth and Hellam streets.

Mingus will discuss his book “Flames Beyond Gettysburg,” an

Providing protection for the police

LowerWindsor Township Police Department has a mission to keep the community safe, and thanks to a local organization, that mission just became a little easier. River’s Edge Community Services (RECS) raised money to donate a police shield to the station. Members of the group presented a check to Police Chief Jim Thomas in February.

“This will make a big difference for us,” Thomas said, noting that the station currently has only one police shield, which has been used in the field. “We need something like this to keep our officers safe and to help protect our community.”

RECS members decided to raise funds for the shield after nowretired Police Chief David Arnold came to a RECS meeting in March of 2022. He talked about the station’s needs, and he mentioned that the police were looking to buy another riot shield. After the meeting, Terry Robinson, pastor at Water’s Edge United Methodist Church in Wrightsville, asked the group, “What do you think about raising money for that second

shield?” Robinson noted that he felt the project sounded like a good fit for RECS, an organization of about 14 area churches. “I thought it was important to the community and a way we could show our support to the police, because they support us so much by protecting and serving this community,” he said.

Jim Lewis, pastor of Zion United Methodist Church in East Prospect, said all of the United Methodist churches in the area were asked to donate, and donations also came from the East Prospect Lions Club. Individual members of RECS also asked their specific churches for donations. In total, six churches and individuals donated $1,716, enough to purchase the shield.

RECS began about 10 years ago, when Carolyn Livingston got the idea to bring the churches together.

“Our founder said it best when she said, ‘We can do more together than we can apart,’” recalled RECS secretary Brenda Holcomb. At first, three or four churches came together with a focus on helping students in the Eastern York School District. They collected clothes to be kept in the nurse’s office for students in need.

Since then, not only has RECS grown in members, but it has also expanded its reach to additional service projects. Each July, the group collects school supplies and fills backpacks to deliver among the five schools in the district at the start of the school year. They support Project Toybox, a toy collection and distribution initiative of the Christ United Methodist Church in Yorkana. The group has been involved with the Wrightsville Group Workcamp since 2017, supplying snacks and drinks to the student participants, and RECS is currently holding a book drive for children in the district. “We have collected 1,100 books,” Holcomb said, adding that the Lions Club helped with that collection as well.

RECS currently meets on the last Monday of the month at various locations in the region. Speakers often come to meetings and talk about their organizations, and state Rep. Joe D’Orsie’s office has expressed interest in partnering with them, Holcomb stated. She also noted that the group welcomes new members.

For more information on RECS, call Holcomb at 717-252-6092.

account of the Civil War skirmish in Wrightsville prior to the Battle of Gettysburg. “‘Flames Beyond Gettysburg’ is the story of the Confederate invasion of PA from Chambersburg to Wrightsville, where they were stopped by the burning of the Columbia-Wrightsville bridge,” explained Lisa Burk, co-historian of Historic Wrightsville Inc.

Burk said Mingus is well-known in the area for his knowledge of history, making his talks a popular attraction. At last year’s Old Town Night, he gave a talk on the Underground Railroad in York County, and the event was standingroom-only. This year, the event has been moved to the church’s main sanctuary to accommodate the expected crowd.

Not only is Mingus a guest speaker at various local events, but he has also led walking tours about the history of Wrightsville as it pertained to the Confederate invasion, Burk stated.

Going old school for a cause

If the winter blues have you feeling low, head out for a fun night guaranteed to raise your spirits. Iron-Leg Corp. will host a Back to the ’70s and ’80s Dance Party on Saturday, March 11. The event will be held at Club Twenty3, 1703 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, from 7 p.m. to midnight.

“Come out, dust off your platform shoes and help support a great cause,” said Sean Laukhuff, vice president of Iron-Leg. “Come enjoy the night with friends and dancing and just let loose.”

The festivities will feature ’70s

and ’80s music from a DJ, a photo booth, a signature Iron-Leg drink and a silent auction. “We’ll have lots of sports memorabilia, memorabilia from the ’70s and ’80s and really something for everyone at the auction,” Laukhuff commented. People are encouraged to come in their best ’70s and ’80s costumes, and a costume contest will be held. “We’ll award prizes for the best male, best female and best couple,” Laukhuff noted.

Proceeds from the party will benefit Iron-Leg Corp., a Lancasterbased nonprofit organization that raises funds for children in need of prosthetics. The organization was

Celebrating the outdoors

Everything outdoors will be in the spotlight on Saturday, March 18, when the Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA), in cooperation with Maytown-East Donegal Township Fire Department, holds the 56th annual Spring Outdoor Show. The event, which will also include a pork barbecue, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the fire department building, 160 E.

High St., Maytown.

“The outdoor show really showcases a great variety of vendors,” said Brandon Crouser, DFCA president. “We have everything from fishing and hunting to local artists and local companies.” The show will also feature presentations from Katie Hollen of the Lebanon County Conservation District, Keith Williams from the Lancaster Conservancy and a representative of BreakLine Charters, who will discuss

fishing for catfish. “The big attraction that I’m very excited about is between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The folks from Reptile Invasion are coming with all of their amazing little creatures,” Crouser commented.

The show is free to attend, but all proceeds will go toward continuing restoration work on the Donegal Creek, supporting the club’s cooperative nursery and funding its annual kids’ fishing derby, held later in the spring. “This is our first post-pandemic show, and we are looking forward to having the community come out and enjoy the day with local talent from the community,” Crouser stated. “You can purchase items from vendors, purchase (giveaway) tickets to pick items from the donation table or just enjoy the demonstrations and Harvey’s BBQ.”

History lecture series to continue

The Susquehanna National Heritage Area will continue its Old Times Lecture Series. Lectures will take place at the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville.

“Construction of Safe Harbor Dam” will be presented by Mark Arbogast, retired PPL land manager, at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8. Built between 1930 and 1931, Safe Harbor Dam was the last of

the four hydro-electric dams to be constructed on the Lower Susquehanna. Arbogast will share the story of the construction of the dam and the village that was built to house its employees.

“Murder at Accomac” will be presented by local historian Michael Maloney at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12. Maloney will share the details of the real-life story he uncovered for his book “Across the

River: Murder at Accomac.”

More than recounting the murder and subsequent trial, the presentation will take attendees on a journey through the history of Accomac, Coyle’s Ferry, and the town of Marietta. The pro-

BBQ, will provide the barbecue, which will be available as sandwiches or meals. The barbecue is only available by advance purchase, and tickets may be purchased from any member of DFCA by Saturday, March 11.

Not only does the outdoor show highlight a variety of activities, Crouser said, but it is also the DFCA’s biggest fundraiser. “We hope we get people to sign up for a DFCA yearly membership as they come in and help support our trout nursery program,” he commented. “That enables us to keep stocking these local creeks with trout and put on our kids’ fishing derby.”

For more information on the Spring Outdoor Show, contact Crouser at 717-538-4370 or brandoncrouser@gmail.com. More information on DFCA may be found at www.donegal creek.org or on Facebook by searching for “Donegal Fish & Conservation Association.”

“Scott has established himself as an expert historian,” she said. “Not only is he very knowledgeable, but he has the ability to share his love of the Civil War era in meaningful conversation.”

Due to the popularity of recent Old Town Nights, Historic Wrightsville Inc. is planning more than one this year. The next one will be held on Friday, April 28. Historian Stephen Smith will present “Examining Five

Wrightsville Area Businesses From the Early 1900s.” Featured businesses will be Bailey’s Garage, Susquehanna Steam Sawmills, Wrightsville Lime Company, Wrightsville Hardware and Round Top Resort.

started by Matt Millhouse and Laukhuff, who were looking for a way to give back to the community when they realized they could raise funds for a cause close to home. Millhouse’s son, Parker, was born without a right leg, so Millhouse and Laukhuff created Iron-Leg in 2020, named in Parker’s honor. The organization has a mission of not only paying for high-end prosthetics for children and youths age 18 and younger, but also making sure recipients receive therapy to learn how to use them. IronLeg has helped children in Lancaster and York counties, raising thousands of dollars. Each prosthetic can cost between $5,000 and $50,000.

Last year’s dance party, held at The Village Nightclub, raised close to $10,000, a goal Laukhuff hopes to meet again this year. Additional fundraisers for the organization include a golf tournament and a car show.

Laukhuff noted that IronLeg is looking for board members who have a passion for making a difference in a child’s life. “If you have a

heart for community and a desire to give back, we’d love to talk to you,” he said.

In the meantime, he hopes to draw a good crowd to the dance party, adding, “It’s winter, and we’ve all been cooped up inside. Get out of the house and come to a party.”

The dance party is for people age 21 and older. Tickets may be purchased for a discount by using a QR code found on Iron-Leg’s Facebook page. Tickets will also be available the door. For more information, visit www.ironleg.org.

Sopranojam Music Studio has announced its schedule of monthly mini camps and its annual summer Discover Your Voice Camp.

According to studio owner Julie Stone, the purpose of the one-day mini camps is to provide a way for youths ages 6 to 12 to have fun singing, dancing, and acting with no

pressure. Attendees learn and play together, using the skills needed for the performing arts, which helps them build a context for using those skills in other contexts.

Past themes have included “Winter Wonderland,” “Hakuna Matata,” and “Hawaiian Adventure.” Upcoming camps are set for 10 a.m. to noon on the following Saturdays: March 11, “Journey to Oz”; April 15, “Under the Sea”; May 13, “Broadway Hits”; and

June 10, “At the Hop.” Registration is required by the Monday before each camp, and there is a per-student fee.

Discover Your Voice Camp is an eight-day performing arts camp that utilizes a signature program to help singers build confidence. There are no auditions, and every participant will have a feature performance. Sessions of the camp will be held from noon to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 25, to Sunday, July 2,

Penn State Extension will livestream a program in the Forest Farming Series on Thursday, March 30, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. via Zoom. Forest farming is the production of non-timber forest products in forests to produce edible and medicinal crops for personal use and income.

Titled “Ramps/Wild Leeks,” the upcoming program will provide information on the identification, biology, ecology, uses, and importance of the edible plant Allium tricoccum, also known as the ramp or wild leek. Viewers will also learn about wild population stewardship and forest farming approaches, as well as research updates and educational opportunities. The webinar is designed for forest landowners, recreational and

commercial foragers, foraged plant consumers, natural resource agency personnel, foresters, land managers, and gardeners.

There is no cost to attend, but registration is required to

receive the webinar link. For details and registration, visit www.extension.psu.edu and search for “Forest Farming Series: Ramps/Wild Leeks.” Registrants will also receive access to the webinar recording.

Rocking for a cause

Senior Commons at Powder Mill in York held a Rock-a-Thon on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, which kicked off the week of fundraising for the American Heart Association. Residents, staff members and visitors took their turns rocking for a cause from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with close to 40 participating in the event.

According to director of resident life Maureen Rittenhouse, the goal was to have at least one person rocking throughout the day.

During the Rock-a-Thon, participants could do chair exercises, read and share funny jokes and riddles and enjoy complimentary refreshments.

The Rock-a-Thon was one activity the senior living community uses to bring hearthealth awareness and money, along with a chicken potpie dinner fundraiser, a bake sale, a valentine gift combo and an on-site presentation led by a representative from the American Heart Association.

Rittenhouse noted that the goal was to raise $1,000.
