Donald Macaulay’s job as quartermaster for Boy Scout Troop 349 is to assign and distribute gear to his fellow troop members on campouts. By sorting through the equipment, he has taken note of all the areas that need improvement. “Our tents and tarps are wearing out, and we need to replace them,” Donald said. “We camp frequently, especially in winter.” While Troop 349 members are still working out the numbers needed to purchase, Donald has been researching the available options. Tents large enough to accommodate three to five people plus their belongings and with a life expectancy of at least four years typically cost between $200 and $500.

Cindi Selph set out to learn how to crochet after having a conversation with a friend about people who crochet plastic bags into sleeping mats. “I went online and got inspired by all of the YouTube videos,” recalled Selph. With sewing and knitting skills already under her belt, Selph was able to quickly teach herself how to crochet the plastic bag yarn more commonly referred to simply as “plarn.” Selph reached out to Mount Joy Helping Services to see if there might be a need for the 4-by-6-foot plarn sleeping mats locally, and she learned See Mats Of Love pg 3

Mats Of Love from pg 1 weeks for her to complete, but it can take more or less time depending how much time per day someone has to devote to the project. “I usually spend a couple of hours each evening working on it,” shared Selph. One evening a month, Selph opens up her home for anyone from St. Mark’s UMC or the community to gather to work on Mats of Love. “It’s been pretty lively,” remarked Selph, adding that attendance usually ranges from five to 15 people. The beauty of the project is that people of all ages can help, Selph said, whether they have crocheting skills or not. Some members of St. Mark’s UMC assist by donating bags, and the church has a box designated for plastic bag donations. Others cut strips of plastic and roll plarn balls at home in their leisure time. “Some people find it very
therapeutic,” commented Selph. Mats of Love participant Mary Rost agreed, chiming in, “It’s truly cheap therapy.” “There are a lot of people that just donate the bags, which is great because we’re happy to have them,” said Rost. Colorful bags are especially appreciated as Rost explained that it adds dimension and interest to the overall design and look of the mat. The concept of making and giving away the plarn mats is not new or unique to the Mats of Love group at St. Mark’s UMC, emphasized Selph. “There are lots of people doing it, even here in Lancaster,” she shared. In addition to giving mats to Mount Joy Helping Services, Mats of Love participant Deb Rupp delivers mats to Lancaster First Assembly of God, where the mats are given out as needed to homeless people who attend a free monthly meal hosted by that congregation. Even the excess of the plastic bags used in the process - the handles and very bottom portion of each bag - are put to good use, as they are donated to the Mount Joy Lions Club to later be used in making recycled benches. To learn more about Mats of Love at St. Mark’s UMC, readers may call the church at 717-653-5493.
Women gather around Mount Joy resident Cindi Selph’s table to flatten plastic bags to be cut into yarn - or plarn - that is used to crochet sleeping mats for people who are homeless.

Julie Shumway, administrator, talked about the school and its participation in Give Local York, a countywide day of fundraising set for May 1: What is the mission of Montessori Children’s House of York Inc.? We are a not-for-profit private school serving children and adolescents. We follow Maria Montessori’s proven model of education as the key to freeing each human’s full potential and moving toward a more peaceful society. Why is the school excited to participate in Give Local York this year? We are so excited to announce the creation of our first scholarship program, for families who could not otherwise afford Montessori education. Especially exciting for us is that 100% of donations from our Give Local York campaign will be changing the lives of real students in our community. Research shows a Montessori education is one of the best ways to erase achievement gaps among low-income families; we want to do that for York.

about the growing number of people in the immediate area experiencing homelessness. She invited people from her church, St. Mark’s United Methodist Church (UMC) in Mount Joy, to join her in creating the mats to then be distributed to people in need. For someone sleeping outside, the mats add a layer of protection - however thin - from the cold, damp ground. Thus far, the St. Mark’s Mats of Love group has completed approximately 50 mats that have been given away and well-received. The technique for making the mats begins with flattening basic plastic bags - the two-handled ones used at grocery and convenience stores - and then measuring and cutting them into pieces that are rolled into balls of plarn. Next comes the process of crocheting the mats, each of which Selph said usually takes two

“I wasn’t expecting the outcome this much. I have a lot of respect for their coach (Ken Battistelli). Zara Zerman is the best player we’ve faced this year and I thought we came up with a good scheme to stop her and contain her,” said Weaver. “I have a ton of confidence in my girls and I tell them ‘I’m never going to lie to you’, you can beat anybody on any given night.” Eastern York’s confidence was evident from the start as the visitors opened the game with a 6-2 spurt over the first two minutes of action. Northern Lebanon appeared to weather the storm, countering with a 5-0 run that gave the Lady Vikings a slim 7-6 lead with 3:55 remaining in the opening frame. It proved to be NL’s only lead of the game. Eastern York moved back in front, 9-7, with a Mara Weaver three-ball that came with just under three minutes remaining in the quarter. Starting with Weaver’s bucket the Lady Golden Knights ripped off 15 straight points over a 5:30 stretch that turned Northern Lebanon’s one-point lead into a 21-7 Eastern York cushion. Northern Lebanon managed to close out the half with an 8-7 run but that still left Eastern York rocking a 13-point halftime lead. The two sides traded buckets coming out of the break with Eastern holding a 10-8 edge in the frame thanks largely to Weaver’s two long range bombs. The Lady Vikings made one last push as the final stanza got underway, twice trimming the Eastern York lead to 12-points but a Malone and Zerbe fueled 11-0 run closed

to-back blowout wins over Wyomissing and Northern Lebanon and earned a spot in the District 3-4A championship game. Eastern kicked off their postseason fun on February 21st with a 59-27 demolition of Wyomissing in Wrightsville. Brad Weaver’s squad grabbed control of the game at the opening whistle and only loosened their grip ever so slightly in the third quarter, leading to a slim 14-12 edge for the Lady Spartans. Fortunately for the home crowd, the Lady Golden Knights dominated the opening half so that two-point hit did little to slow Eastern York down. That first half domination resulted in just six points for the visitors and a 22-point cushion at the break thanks to Eastern’s 28point effort. The sluggish third quarter reignited the Lady Golden Knights’ intensity and the result was a 19-7 run through the fourth quarter and the victory. Victoria Zerbe paced a trio of Lady Golden Knights in double figures with 14-points while Addy Malone and Mara Weaver added 10-points apiece. The 32-point quarterfinal blowout win not only earned Eastern York a PIAA-4A berth it also sent the Lady Golden Knights to Fredericksburg for a tangle with the second seeded Lady Vikings of Northern Lebanon. out the game and secured the 23point win. Zerbe scored eight of the 11 points in the game ending run to finish with 10-points for the game while Malone’s involvement in that spurt gave her 11 for the game. Weaver’s 15 points led all scorers while Breana Grim and Lily Campbell finished the scoring with eight and seven points respectively. WRESTLING Three members of Eastern York wrestling team hit the road on February 21st and 22nd to take part in the District 3-2A Championships. In years past that road would have taken the Golden Knights to Hershey but District 3 moved away from the Giant Center for the 2019-2020 championships so the trio traveled to Central Dauphin East High School instead. All three grapplers ended their weekend on the medal stand but only two did well enough to earn a berth in the PIAA-2A SE Region tournament that will take place February 28th and 29th at Bethlehem’s Freedom High School. Nate Dandridge found himself highest on the medal stand after dropping just one match, to the eventual silver medalist. Dandridge’s 5-1 mark earned the junior the bronze medal in the 285-pound bracket with the final win coming over Octorara’s Paul Orner in the consolation finals. Dandridge opened his weekend with another pinfall win, this one coming just after the start of the second period with Hamburg’s Charles Sheppard taking the loss. Dandridge suffered his lone setback in the quar-
terfinals, falling to Bishop McDevitt’s Saywer Morgan. Dandridge worked his way to the consolation finals with pinfall wins over Ben Wargo (ELCO), Peyton Wentzel (Upper Dauphin) and Elijah Hernandez (Steel-High) that lasted a combined total of 1:52. Isaac Buser found himself a few rungs lower on the medal stand, finishing sixth in the 182-pound bracket after going 3-3. The weekend started well for the junior who took out ELCO’s Owen Kahl just 35-seconds into their opening round bout. Buser dropped from the championship bracket after a 10-9 loss to Travis Colson of Hamburg in the quarterfinals. He rebounded with back-to-back wins once in the consolation round. The first was a first period dismissal of Trinity’s Jacob Shull while the second was a second period pinfall win over Schuylkill Valley’s Gabriel Kolasa. Things went sideways from there for Buser with losses to Bermudian Springs’ Hogan Swenski and Ben Mullin of Camp Hill dropping the junior into sixth place. Kaleb Crean was the final Golden Knight taking part in the action at CD East with the junior finishing just out of the money but still on the medal stand. Crean dropped three of his four matches to finish eighth in the 152pound bracket. That left the junior one spot outside the PIAA-2A SE Region cutline. The lone win came in Crean’s opening consolation bout where he pinned Northern Lebanon’s Nick Winters just after the start of the third period. Tide Punches Ticket to PIAA Tournament by Sam Valentin
It was a busy week for the Tidd, playing two PIAA District 3-3A playoff games in five days. They split the pair and now prepare for the state tournament. “We have to bounce back,” Columbia head coach Kerry Glover said after a disappointing lost in Camp Hill. “We have to get back to work tomorrow and get back to practice.” Well they did just that.
The Tide lined up against Brandywine Heights last Tuesday night in the District 3-3A consolation third/fourth place that also had state seeding implications. In the final game on the hill this year, the boys put on a show on their way to a 53-67 win leading into the state tournament. It was a rare sight to see senior Ryan Redding start in front of Michael Poole but it seemed to work out. Poole was the spark they needed, scoring 20 points off the bench
with most of those points coming in the second half. Matt McCleary mentioned he had the hot hand so he had to just keep feeding him and he laughed as he added that he really only had to focus on the defensive end as Poole took care of the offense. “I was open to coming off the bench,” Poole said of his 20-bucket performance. “ I just felt good and trusted my teammates who kept feeding me.” Columbia came out fast as McCleary started the scoring with a three. The Tide built a 7-2 lead when the Bullets finally scored two minutes into the game. Poole sank a three to make it 14-5 then a few positions later he hit a deep two.
Columbia built a 17-9 lead at the end of the first. The Tide kept up the tempo into the second quarter with a bucket by Brady Smith underneath putting the Tide up 21-13. Smith then stroked a three pointer on the very next possession and a Redding trey made it 27-16 but Brandywine scored the last five points of the quarter to make it 27-21. The Tide kept up the fast pace but could not seem to capitalize early and the lead was cut to three points two minutes into the third quarter. Kerry Glover made a tough cut into the lane for a layup and that is the closest the visitors would come all night. Poole caught fire draining three three’s in the third quarter as
the guys just kept feeding him. He was clearly the go to guy on the night. Luis Cruz also made his presence felt as he was all over the boards and scored seven as he pushed the lead back to 15 early in the fourth quarter after his old fashioned three point play. With five minutes left in the game the Columbia lead was cut to seven but Glover went coast to coast to keep the Tide in control. Poole put the game on ice as he extended the lead to 14 with 14 seconds left. McCleary and Glover both scored 13 apiece in the victory. Smith added nine while Redding put in five. For seniors McCleary, Redding, and Matt Gamble, this was their final game on this floor. “It is a new chapter,” McCleary said as he reminisced his last couple games in Columbia including 31 points on senior night, which is a fond memory for him. “We still have states so we are not done yet.” The only reason Columbia found
itself in the consolation game was because they picked up an 85-50 loss at the hands of Camp Hill on February 20th. The Tide got off to a slow start and found themselves down 21-14 at the end of the first and took a 12point deficit into the half and couldn’t dig out. Cruz led the way with 16 points and Glover added 14 points. McCleary scored seven, both Ryan Hinkle and Redding put in five apiece, and Smith added three points. This was Columbia’s second loss at the hands of Camp Hill. The Tide normally scores about 64 a night. So they struggled a bit and chalked it up as an off night. Camp Hill just played faster than the Tide that night. This was the second time they were held under 50 points this season. The next stop is the state playoffs where this team has not been since See Tide pg 11

Lady Knights from pg 8 Pequea Valley’s Dustin Huber and Wyomissing’s Anton Easterbrook. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Win in the postseason. Seems like a simple enough goal for a high school boys’ basketball team but as last year’s Eastern York squad can attest, it is easier said then done. The 2018-2019 edition rolled through the regular season with a pristine 19-3 record but finished 19-6 after an 0-3 postseason flame out. This year’s edition battled to a 14-8 mark in the regular season and slipped into the District 3-4A bracket as the six seed. Despite the regular season struggles, this year’s Golden Knight squad collected a postseason victory with a 55-47 triumph over Berks Catholic on February 24th. “We expected a low scoring game. We expected it to be a low scoring dog fight, said Justin Seitz.
The dogfight left Seitz’s Golden Knights on the wrong side of a 25-17 halftime score which the skipper attributed to defensive breakdowns from his squad coupled with missed shots on the offensive end. The coaching staff used intermission to clean up those miscues then watched as shots started falling. “We came out in the second half, made a few adjustments defensively, but not too many. We just executed better, said Seitz. “And Trevor was able to really, really ignite us offensively. The ignition that coach Seitz mentioned came from his son, the team’s starting point guard, Trevor. The senior Marywood University commit caught fire in the second half starting with an 18-point outburst in the third. That helped Eastern post a 2515 edge in the frame, flipping Catholic’s eight-point halftime lead
into a two-point Golden Knight lead as the game headed for the home stretch. Seitz, the point guard version, finished his second half scoring barrage by averaging a point a minute in the final frame to finish with a game high 26. His eight-point frame helped the Golden Knights post a 13-7 edge and secure the 55-47 win. Tristan Sawmiller was the only other Eastern player to hit double digits, finishing with 11 points. Micah Myers added eight points while Dustin Cunningham and Austin Bausman
added five points each. Eastern York’s mantra of winning in the postseason did not get off to a good start with a 59-54 loss to ELCO in the District 3-4A quarterfinals on February 20th. A sluggish opening frame ended up as the Golden Knights undoing as the host Raiders jumped out to an 18-9 lead after eight minutes. “We were really, really concerned about the first four to five minutes of the first quarter. Being on the road, ELCO is a very, very tough place to play
and a good team, said head coach Seitz. “We ended up giving up 15 points in the first 4:30 minutes of the first quarter, kind of what we expected. We were able to weather the storm and get back into the game and then weren’t able to execute early in the fourth quarter for three or four possessions. That really killed us in a one-point game. Eastern York went on a 15-10 run to start the second frame, trimming ELCO’s lead to 28-24 at the break. The Golden Knights continued their comeback bid in the third, posting a slim
11-8 edge that made it a 36-35 game heading into the final stanza. The additional few rough minutes of the fourth that Seitz mentioned allowed the Raiders to build some momentum early in the frame that carried over for a 23-19 advantage and the 59-54 final. Only five Golden Knights scored in the game led by a game high 30points from Trevor Seitz. Myers picked up nine points, Bausman added seven while Cunningham chipped in with six points. Sawmiller accounted for the final two points.

Each year the Shpielers take the songs from a particular American musical, parody the lyrics of those songs, and somehow merge the themes of that musical with the story of Esther. This year, they have chosen as their parody vehicle the musical “The Pajama Game.” The major roles will be played by Josh Schwartz, King
Achashveyrosh; Lisa Miller, Esther; Kevin Babione, Mordechai; and Jason Meyer, Haman. Other cast members include Stu Blumenthal, Missy DePietro, Melanie DeSantis, Bobby Dickman, Eli FaulknerSchwartz, Andy Gerofsky, Barbara Harr, Aaron Kareha, Ryan Kareha, Elin Ketels, Kathy Levine, Sarah Mangan, Rabbi Jack Paskoff, Janine Riben, Rachel Rosenzweig, Martha Rowley, Harvery Scolnick, Ronda Shiffrin, Judith Singer, Colleen Stameshkin, David Stameshkin, Carol Woodman, and Alice Yerman.
