Lancaster currently serves 30 children from Lancaster, York, and Chester counties, offering free Orton-Gillingham remediation for dyslexia. The center is a nonprofit organization supported through various fundraising events, including Easter and Thanksgiving pie sales, a walk in October, the Extraordinary Give, apple dumpling and chicken corn soup sales, and the sale of car wash coupons. The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster is located in the Masonic Center of Lancaster County, 213 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, whose members run many of the dyslexia program’s fundraisers. For more than two decades, the Scottish Rite Masons, Northern Jurisdiction, have helped to lead the national effort to support children and their families as they overcome the obstacles of dyslexia through their financial support of 45 active centers in 13 states. Dyslexia is a neurologically based condition that affects language acquisition, processing, and decoding. Recent research suggests dyslexia affects up to 20 percent of the population, reported Children’s Dyslexia Center director Heather Hinkel. People with dyslexia typically have above-average intelligence, but they can struggle in a traditional

Seedling Sale Serves A Dual Purpose The Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) is holding its 45th annual tree seedling sale. Orders for conifers, hardwoods, wildlife food sources, groundcover, and pollinator-friendly perennials will be accepted through Monday, March 11. The preordered and prepaid plants will be ready for pickup on Thursday, April 11, in the auditorium at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. “That’s the weekend before Easter,” remarked education coordinator Sallie Gregory. “Hopefully folks will consider purchasing (plants) to celebrate Easter and Earth Day, which is on April 22.” Gregory explained that conservation districts were created in response to the Dust Bowl, in which windstorms caused massive soil erosion in the Midwest in the early 1930s. Men and boys employed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) planted trees around the nation, including Pennsylvania, to reduce erosion, especially along streambanks. The first Earth Day was observed in 1970, and the LCCD launched its first tree seedling sale in 1974 to celebrate Earth Day and honor the CCC. “It combined the effort to make trees available to everybody and conserve soil and waterways,” Gregory shared. The tree sale has continued for nearly a half-century. It is the only fundraising event for the LCCD, which, as an annex to county government, receives some public funding as well as grants and private contributions. The funds are
used to provide education and watershed programs, which are held in classrooms or on individual waterways where volunteers are working on stream cleanups, Gregory said. The education programs are available for teachers in kindergarten through grade 12, as well as college classes, and all lessons meet state standards for environment and ecology. LCCD also works with classes to perform stream studies, which assess the health of a waterway by cataloging and counting plant, insect, and fish life. There is a second, equally important reason for the seedling sale. “We’re making trees and other plants accessible for county residents to put in the soil to keep it in place so it doesn’t erode due to wind or rain,” Gregory said. Many of the plants also serve dual purposes, whether it is providing food for people or wildlife or acting as windbreaks or Christmas trees. The sale organizers make sure they are offering as many native species as possible, and they work with area nurseries to get appropriate stock for the sale. New offerings
this year include coralberry, which holds its bright berries through the start of winter, and three self-pollinating fruit trees: Montmorency sour cherry, Klondike white peach, and Coralstar peach. The majority of trees on the sale list are bare root stock that will be dipped in a root preservative gel so that buyers will not have to plant their purchases immediately. As the trees are seedlings, the sale is also offering tubes with stakes designed to protect young plants from stressors and potential damage from deer, moles, voles, and other creatures that would eat their roots or stems. To see a pictorial description list of all species and access an order form, readers may visit www.lancasterconservation.org. For more information or to request that an order form be mailed to them, folks may call the LCCD at 717-299-5361, ext. 5. Payment is due when orders are placed and must be sent to the LCCD. The office is located at the Farm and Home Center and is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays.

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg announced that it has reached the $250,000 goal for the Ready for the Roundhouse fundraising campaign for the preservation of five historic steam locomotives. The nonprofit Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania took the lead in the Ready for the Roundhouse campaign, which kicked off with a $50,000 matching fund challenge from the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical and Historical Society. The campaign began in November 2016, and the $250,000 goal was met in December 2018. The five steam locomotives that are part of the Ready for the Roundhouse campaign are keystone pieces that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and are part of the Pennsylvania Railroad Historic Collection. They include Pennsylvania Railroad M1b No. 6755, K4s No. 3750, L1s No. 520, H10s No. 7688, and B6sb No. 1670. These engines, along with the restored E6s No. 460, are slated to take their place in the museum’s to-be-built roundhouse, for which ground could possibly be broken this year.
In general, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s restoration projects are continuing. Individuals who are skilled in welding, metal fabrication, cabinet making, painting, and pipe fitting are needed in the restoration shop as volunteers and are invited to contact the volunteer/program coordinator. Donations for equipment restoration are also accepted on the museum’s website. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is home to a world-class collection of 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars, a working restoration shop, a library and archives, and an immersive education center, along with special events, programs, and exhibits. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is one of 24 historic sites and museums administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission as part of the Pennsylvania Trails of History, with the active support of the nonprofit Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Eastern Teams Compete in District Playoffs by Eric Pyles
In one three game stretch, the Eastern York girls’ basketball team started and completed their postseason journey. The Lady Golden Knights finished their regular season 15-7 which was good enough to earn a first round bye in the District 3-4A tournament. That meant Eastern opened postseason play on February 22nd with a quarterfinal clash opposite ELCO. The Lady Raiders delighted the home crowd in Myerstown with a 46-42 victory that derailed Eastern York’s title shot. The Lady Golden Knights saw their five-point, 21-16, halftime lead disappear in the third quarter. The reason was ELCO’s 2011 run that put the home team up four points. Eastern was able to regroup but only enough to post a 10-10 draw that set the 46-42 final. Cass Arnold netted a team high 15 points in the loss while Addy Malone chipped in 11 as the only other Lady Golden Knight in double digits. Eastern York rebounded with a 54-38 consolation semifinal win over Susquehanna Township on the 26th. Eastern controlled throughout, posting a scoring edge in all four
quarters starting with an 8-7 edge in the first. The Lady Golden Knights used a 14-10 second quarter spurt to enjoy a five-point halftime cushion. That lead ballooned to 11-points after Eastern’s 15-9 advantage in the third and the final 16-point margin after the 17-12 fourth quarter edge. Arnold and Malone combined for over half of Eastern’s point total with Arnold’s 17-points taking game high honors. Malone chipped in with a 15-point game while Amanda Galentine’s eight points led a pack of five Lady Golden Knights that accounted for the remaining 22 points. Eastern York’s season came to a close on the final night in February thanks to a 62-44 loss to Bermudian Springs. The battle was to the decide the District 3-4A fifth and sixth place teams with the winner enjoying a PIAA berth. Skyler West and her 25-points helped Bermudian Springs to control three-quarters of the game. The one quarter that Eastern did control was the opening one where the Lady Golden Knights posted a 15-11 edge. The Lady Eagles controlled from there starting with a 16-10 run in the second that put Bermudian up for good. The Lady Eagles stretched their lead to six points
heading into the final frame where their 23-4 run made it a 62-44 final. Malone picked up another doubledigit game with 12-ponts while Mara Weaver netted 14 to pace the team in the loss. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Over the course of a high school basketball season, there is never a good time to be on either end of a two-game losing streak. However, just about any other time of the season is preferred over where the Golden Knights suffered their first and only two game slide of the season. That would be at the onset of the District 34A playoffs with losses to Susquehanna Township and Littlestown taking
Eastern York from top seed to done for the season. As the number one seed, the Golden Knights enjoyed a first round bye making their district opener a February 21st quarterfinal tilt opposite Susquehanna Township. The Indians were able to overcome a monster 26point game from Trevor Seitz and slip away from Wrightsville with a 63-61 victory. Eastern’s undoing turned out to be a sluggish second quarter where they were outscored 17-10. Add in a 19-19 deadlocked opening frame and Susquehanna Township entered intermission up 36-29. The Golden Knights nearly erased that halftime deficit

MERCHANDISER - Columbia/Hellam/Wrightsville Edition with a 17-16 edge in the third but Susquehanna Township was able to hang on for the win by outscoring Eastern 16-15 in the final stanza. Demonte Martin (14 points) and Kaleb Corwell (11 points) gave Eastern York a trio of double digits scorers to account for the bulk of the offense. Kade Wiley’s six points and Bryce Henise’s four points finished things off on the offensive side. The Golden Knights season came to a crashing halt a few days later with an 85-53 loss to Littlestown in the consolation semifinals. The 32-point defeat came as a shock to the home crowd as it was only Eastern’s second loss on their home court all season. The ‘Bolts took control of the game early, jumping out to a six-point, 18-12, lead after the first quarter but really took over in the second
quarter where Littlestown posted a 21-8 edge to open up a 19-poiont halftime cushion. Eastern York was able to get their offense going enough to hang with the Thunderbolts in the third, earning an 18-18 draw. That would prove to be the high point for the Golden Knights as Littlestown raced to a 28-15 game ending run to make it an 85-53 final. Eastern York had 10 different players score during the loss but Martin’s 12 counted as team high and the lone player in double digits for the game. Seitz just missed the double-digit mark, finishing with nine points. WRESTLING The Eastern York wrestling team worked all season to make it to Hershey and four members did so by participating in the District 3-2A
Championship on February 22nd and 23rd. Unfortunately, three of those four found the going difficult and ended up winless in Hershey. The lone grappler to avoid the winless fate was Nicolas Hess who despite finishing eighth still saw his season
come to a close. Hess kicked off his path to the podium by pinning Camp Hill’s David Brennan 22-seconds into the second period of their 285-pound first round battle. A quarterfinal loss to the eventual 285-pound champi-
on, Damon Jones of Boiling Springs, sent Hess into the consolation bracket. He finished off Friday’s action with his final victory of the tournament, a 7-0 shutout of ELCO’s Adam Koehler. Saturday proved to be more difficult as pinfall losses to Octorara’s Paul Orner and Fairfield’s Jake Moyer shuffled Hess all the way to eighth place and out of a PIAA-2A SE Regional spot awarded to the top seven finishers. Justin Manganello was the first Golden Knight to step on the mat in Hershey. The junior dropped his 138pound opening round bout with Shane Strausser of Hamburg by a 16-0

final with a consolation loss to Brandywine Height’s Jacob Caskie ending his season. Nathan Robbins opened his time in the 152-pound bracket with a 4-0 loss to another bronze medal winning Hamburg wrestler, Brant Mason. A 13-5 consolation loss to Pequea Valley’s Dylan Jackson followed, bringing an end to Robbins season. Drake Brown completed the Golden Knight trio with a 0-2 run at 195. Brown kicked off his weekend with a pinfall loss to Adam Firestine of ELCO and finished with another pinfall loss, this one to Octorara’s Jacob Eckman.
