Kids on a quest in “The Lightning Thief”
BY CATHY MOLITORISWhen Columbia High School presents “The Lightning Thief,” audiences can expect to understand the motivation of the characters on stage, especially if the audience members are high-school students.
“It’s a show about kids dealing with their parents’ mistakes, and I think that’s relatable to a lot of people,” said Nevaeh Kilby, a senior who plays Grover. “I think the message speaks to a lot of people.”
Columbia will present the show at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, through Saturday, March 16, with an additional performance at 2 p.m. on March 16. It will be performed in the high school auditorium, 901 Ironville Pike.
“The Lightning Thief” is based on the first book in the series by Rick Riordan. “It’s about Greek mythology, but set in the modern day,” said Eva Fanous, a junior who is a member of the lighting crew. “It’s about the children of
the Greek gods. They’re called half-bloods because they’re half human, half god. The main character is Percy Jackson, and he finds out he’s a half blood and he has to go on a quest to help his father prevent a war between the gods.”
The musical features several fight scenes, and the cast worked with fight coordinator Rebecca Gentry to prepare.
“There are a lot of intense scenes,” explained Kaitlin Scheele, a senior who plays Annabeth. “There is a capture the flag scene that is a big fight scene.”
She added that the show includes a mix of emotions on stage. “There are funny parts, but there are also tragic parts,” she said. “These are 12-year-olds who are sent on a quest to save the world. It gets pretty intense. There are moments of insecurity and moments when they are ready to fight and take on the world.”
show features a variety of special
effects, said Kenshin Meekins, a senior who is the sound designer.
“This is a complicated show for tech,” he stated. “We’re using fog and other special effects, and the lighting design and sounds we’re using make the show great.”
“The Lightning Thief” features a cast of 25 with a dozen crew members, and the cast members range from second-graders through high-school seniors. Many of the younger students are siblings of the high-schoolers.
Kaitlin hopes audiences will leave the show feeling a bond with the characters. “There’s at least one character in the show that will speak to you,” she said. “There’s a connection level, whether it’s their confidence or their insecurity.”
And Eva expects audiences won’t soon forget the musical, adding, “You will go home with at least one song stuck in your head.”
BY CATHY MOLITORIS“This is one of those shows that makes you feel good,” said director Dena McKell, describing “The Wizard of Oz.” “Everybody loves this show and how it brings that aspect of family and home together.”
“The Wizard of Oz” will be performed by Encore Home School Productions at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, through
Saturday, March 16, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 17.
Although the musical is based on the iconic movie, the directors encouraged the students to make their characters their own.
“We’re not imitating the movie,” said assistant director Jill Panyard. “We wanted to shape the characters a little differently than the movie. We are shaping Dorothy a bit more like a tomboy, like a hardworking farm girl.”
The cast features about 40
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDMulberry Art Studios, 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, is now accepting submissions for its sixth annual We Love Our Pets show. Artists and pet owners in Lancaster County are encouraged to enter original artwork of their animal companions until Friday, April 12. Accepted submissions will be displayed at Mulberry Art Studios in May for National Pet Month.
Amateur and professional
artists of all ages are invited to participate in the show, and submissions may be artwork in any medium, such as painting, drawing, sculpture or photography. Artists may submit as many pieces as they desire. To view the full list of guidelines for submissions, email gallery curator Stephanie Kulfan at Stephanie .mulberryart@gmail.com.

students, ranging in age from 5 to 18. Students represent 12 school districts, including Elizabethtown, Donegal and Columbia.
Rehearsals for “The Wizard of Oz” began in November with character sessions, offering students an opportunity to delve into their characters’ back story to help create in-depth characters on stage.
“Those nuances of the characters are what take good shows and make them great shows,” Panyard said.
Grace Miller, a freshman from Hershey who portrays the Wicked Witch of the West, said audiences can expect to see a polished, elaborate performance.
“They will be blown away by the dance numbers. They are amazing,” she stated. She added that learning to perform the show to recorded music has been challenging, but the cast members are up to the task.
“We have to work with the music, and we have a very limited amount of time to get lines in before the music switches to something else,” she explained. “With a live orchestra, they can slow it down if they
need to, but we have to be sure we’re on pace.”
Josiah Evans, a senior from Elizabethtown who plays The Cowardly Lion, said he challenged himself not to be influenced by the movie or the well-known character he’s portraying.
“I had to tell myself that every depiction of this role is going to be unique,” he said. “I wanted to create my own part.”
He encourages audiences to see the show, adding, “It’s centered on friendship and the values of having good friends and the values of appreciating all you have in your life and being grateful. People should come see the show because it’s going to be very heartwarming.”
Grace emphasized that it takes a team of parents and students to pull together a show full of elaborate props, costumes and sets.
“When you see this show, you’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg. The parents and the kids have spent countless hours on behind-the-scenes work, and you only see the end product,” she said. “To know the full extent of what has gone into creating this show, it’s really amazing to think about that.”

Lecture series will focus on the Lower Susquehanna Valley
Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education (HFC) will present a lecture series, “The Land and Peoples of the Lower Susquehanna Valley” in four two-hour sessions. The series will be held at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia.
The course will explore the geological, archaeological and historical past and the cultural history of the region to help people better understand the land, the legacies of the past and future responsibilities.
Participants will be invited to share their own stories, insights and local knowledge. Each session will be led by HFC board member Ed Wilson, who will be accompanied by regional experts with specialized knowledge about topics of interest.
Participants can register for individual sessions or sign up for the full course at a discounted cost. Session
1, “Origins of the Landscape,” will take place on Tuesday, March 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. The session will focus on the landforms of the Lower Susquehanna Valley and the influence of plate tectonics and other geological processes that created them. The session will also cover the ancient river at its heart and the influence of the massive ice sheets which approached the region but never quite reached it. Guest presenter will be Jay Parrish, former state geologist of
Pennsylvania.
“The Indigenous Peoples and Their Land” will the topic of Session 2 on Tuesday, March 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. The session will focus on the local archaeological record and how prehistoric people adapted to changing environmental conditions. The program will review what is known about the Susquehannocks and other tribes who lived in the region during historic times and the consequences of their contact with Europeans. Finally, the group will consider surviving traces of the indigenous past. Charlie Douts, director of the Blue Rock Heritage Center in Washington Boro, will contribute to the discussion.
Session 3, “European Settlement and the Collision of Worlds,” will be offered on Tuesday, April 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. The session will focus on the rapid influx of German-speaking and Scots-Irish immigrants during the 18th century and the environmental changes they wrought as they sought to replicate their agrarian and industry lifeways in the New World. The group will discuss the cultural backgrounds of European settlers and consider how their activities transformed the region. Joining the session will be David Dietz, historian, farmer and former HFC board chair.
Session 4, “The Contemporary Landscape and Its Challenges,” will be offered on Tuesday, April 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. In the final session, participants will examine the economic and political processes that underlie the twin problems of suburban growth and urban decline and discuss strategies for protecting land. More information on session content and the contributing speaker will be announced at a later date.
Preregistration is required at www.horn farmcenter.org/land-and -peoples/. For more information, visit the aforementioned website, call Alexis Campbell at 717-757-6441 or email executivedirector@ hornfarmcenter.org.
portion of all artwork sold at the exhibit will benefit the Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue. Amy Garrety, the organizations founder, will attend the opening night of the exhibit from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 3. Garrety and a team of volunteers and rescued dogs from the Sebastian Foundation will receive donations at the door. We chose to have this show benefit Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue our very first year because they are
a local nonprofit that really pours their all into helping the animals in our area find homes, Kulfan said. We have continued to have it benefit the Sebastian Foundation each year because the more we get to know them, the more we love them and all they do.
Mulberry Art Studios partners with various school districts in Lancaster County to incorporate the show in art teachers curricula, allowing students to create pieces for the show during class time.
Awards will be given out for Best in Show and Peoples Choice in the adult and youth categories. The recipients of the Best in Show award will be chosen by a panel of artists.
Although accepted art -
work will remain on display until the end of May, vendors will only be present during the opening reception. Last year, vendors sold a variety of items, including dog treats, pet accessories, pet portraits, animal grooming
services and refreshments for humans.
We get some really incredible artwork that is deserving of awards. But personally, my favorite part is when little kids have submitted art into the show, Kulfan said. I get
to see their faces light up as they come into the building and see their artwork up on the gallery wall with all the other artwork.

YCSWA offers medication disposal program
In 2023, the York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) disposed of a total of 3.57 tons of unused and expired residential medication. Some of the medications were collected via the YCSWA’s secure Medication Return Box Program and at community drug take-back events. Additionally, law enforcement personnel delivered illegal drugs for destruction.
Currently, 20 York County police department locations partner with the YCSWA to host medication return boxes in their police department lobbies. The Medication Return Box Program provides a secure disposal option for unwanted medications from residential sources at no cost to the public or to law enforcement
agencies. All York County police departments have been invited to participate. Illegal drugs captured by law enforcement are also destroyed at no cost.
Locations include the Hellam Township Police Department, 44 Walnut Springs Road, York, which is open on Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the Lower Windsor Township Police Department, 2425 Craley Road, Wrightsville, which is open on Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The secure boxes, purchased by YCSWA from MedReturn, work like a mailbox: Once medications are deposited, they cannot be retrieved and are contained in a locked compartment accessible only by law

The Sierra ClubLancaster Group will accept proposals for the next round of its “green project” grants through Sunday, March 31. Any Lancaster County 501(c)(3) organization with a project that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness and improves green infrastructure is eligible to apply for a grant.
The program annually awards grants of up to $500 to charitable, educational or business 501(c)(3) groups that demonstrate a commitment to the Sierra Club’s mission of “exploring, enjoying and protecting the planet” in Lancaster County. When
applying for a grant, organizations should consider how their projects relate to an ecological preservation or educational effort. Projects may focus on topics such as storm water management, rain gardens and rain barrels; native plantings; pollinator plants; organic gardens; composting programs; or hands-on learning. The Lancaster Group will offer its expertise and labor to support the projects that are awarded grants. Eighty-four organizations have been awarded grants over the past eight years.
To apply, visit http:// lancastersierraclub.org/ grant-program/. After submission, an email will be returned to confirm that the proposal has been received.
Winners will be announced on Earth Day, Monday, April 22, and soon after, a list of the awardees will be posted at www .lancastersierraclub.org.
The grant program has been supported by funds raised primarily through the Lancaster Group’s former Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/ Hikes and, more recently, from funds received through its participation in Lancaster’s annual ExtraGive. For additional details, contact Jim Meenan at 717-475-0586 or at jims meenan@gmail.com.
