Celebrate Easter with EggFest and more Hellam Police Department earns accreditation
Easteris a big deal at Wrightsville Assembly of God, and this year, the festivities are even bigger. “We have outgrown our space at the church, so we are taking all of our Easter efforts … up to Eastern York High School,” shared lead pastor Aaron McNatt. The activities will include EggFest, which will be held on Saturday, April 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. “This is our 10th consecutive year hosting a community event on Easter weekend,” McNatt said. “Typically, we’ve hosted a traditional egg
hunt on the church property with about 1,000 guests in attendance. This year, we are taking it to the next level.” EggFest will be held in the stadium parking lot at the high school, 720 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville. “Guests can come and go during the timeframe,” McNatt explained. “Rather than a starting line and a mad dash for eggs, upon arrival, kids will receive a map at the registration table. The map will indicate where they can find the eggs dispersed throughout the event. Every kid is guaranteed to get a basketful of eggs at this hunt.”
Along with the egg hunt, EggFest
will feature a variety of food trucks, including Café 301, serving chicken and waffles; Joe’s Fish Sandwiches; Tri-County Barbecue Catering Inc.; and Kona Ice, serving shaved ice. Several inflatables will be available as well, including an atomic slide, a bounce house and an inflatable axthrowing station. “For the little bunnies, we have a special adventure area designed for kids 4 years and under,” McNatt shared. “There is also a sensory and craft area, face painting, a petting zoo, photo opportunities with the Easter Bunny and a flower farm where kids can make a bouquet for mom.” Except for the food trucks, all activities are free of charge.
“We have also been reaching out to several local businesses and organizations to partner with us on this event,” McNatt stated. The Nathan Krotzer Team from RE/MAX in Wrightsville will sponsor one of the inflatables. The Wild Batch Bistro will host a cookie decorating station, and both the Hellam and Lower Windsor Township Police departments will have a booth.
Members of the Eastern York Middle School PTO will distribute free tickets for a giveaway drawing to see show basketball team the Harlem Wizards at Eastern York High School on Saturday, April 22. Families are invited to return to Eastern York High School on Sunday, April 9, for an Easter service at 10 a.m. in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) at the school. “Last year, our church hosted four separate services on Easter Sunday, and while our volunteers are always up to the challenge, we really wanted to find a way to bring everyone together to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus this year,” McNatt commented. An offering will be collected for Convoy of Hope, the church’s ministry partner, which provides humanitarian relief around the world. Along with the main service, nursery, preschool and kindergarten through sixth-grade classrooms will be set up near the PAC for an Easter service designed specifically for kids. More information on the Easter events may be found at www.wrightsvillechurch.com.
BY CATHY MOLITORISHellam Township Police Department has a new reason to be proud. The department recently achieved accreditation through the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission (PLEAC). “It’s quite an accomplishment to earn accreditation,” said Lt. Drew Heistand. “Only
about 16 or 17% of departments in the state are accredited.”
The department, which has 12 full-time officers and one school resource officer, began the accreditation process a few years ago and finished in late summer 2022. “To be accredited, we had a set of standards we had to work toward,” explained Courtney Bullman, administrative assistant and See Police pg 8

EXTERIORS ROOFING
Building a legacy
BY ANN MEAD ASHServants Inc. has its roots in a mission trip that founder and CEO Trent Davis took to Guatemala around the year 2000. Davis wanted to share his experience with others, and he began coordinating mission trips, but that was just the beginning. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina inspired Davis to do home repair work stateside. Flooding in York County in 2010 brought the program home. Servants now has a presence in Adams and Lancaster counties as well. In Lancaster County, Servants is mostly active in the ELANCO area as well as Columbia and Marietta. Servants Inc. completed more than 110 projects and had more than 10,000 volunteer hours total in 2022.
To raise funds to help area families in need, Servants holds a spring gala. The 2023 event, which will be the fifth for the organization, will be held on Friday, April 14, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Stone Mill Inn, 305 S. Broad St., Hallam. The event will include a cocktail hour, a sit-down multicourse meal, videos, live and silent auctions, and live music, and Davis will give an update on the work of the ministry.
Calling Stone Mill a “gorgeous” location, Keith Cotton, director of outreach with Servants, said that gala activities changed somewhat after a virtual event was held in 2021. “2021 was the first time we introduced an auction,” said Cotton, who noted that an auctioneer hosted the event and videos were shown. Both those features became part of the live auction in 2022.
Because the cocktail hour was successful last year, the 2023 gala will begin with wine and select craft beers. “(During that time), people talked to each other and looked at the silent auction items,” said Cotton. “It was more relaxing.” Cotton pointed out that the food at the event is often a highlight and that attendees often comment on how good it is. The auctioneer who handled the virtual fundraiser will be the event’s master of ceremonies. “The program is pretty light,” said Cotton, who noted that the videos are created with the audience in mind. “People might not know everything about Servants, so the information that’s presented gives people an introduction to what we do and some of the impact that we have and want to continue to have on the communities
that we serve.”
Silent auction items will include a number of themed baskets. Live auction items have traditionally included a beach house vacation at the Outer Banks and a catered meal by a Servants employee. “He is an excellent chef,” said Cotton. “He makes barbecue and smoker (items).” Other auction items will include a Mission Destiny helicopter ride, a catered brisket dinner, a bourbon tasting party for eight, a three-night weekend mountain getaway, and use of an Ocean City, Md. condominium. Cotton pointed out that one item will be a private dinner for eight at the Stone Mill Inn. “It includes a fivecourse dinner paired with wine and prepared by an
exclusive culinary team,” he said.
While the gala has traditionally been held inside the Stone Mill Inn, this year a heated tent will serve as the dining area. The use of the tent will expand the number of people who can attend to about 175. Cotton said that the organization hopes to raise $50,000 to be used to “minister to the spiritual and physical needs of hurting people in our local community, across the USA, and around the world.”
Information about tickets and sponsorship opportunities may be found at www .servants.org/gala. Readers who have questions may email sponsorship@servants.org or call 717-378-0336.

For more than 15 years, St. John’s Episcopal Church in Marietta has been hosting a spring pancake breakfast. This year, the event, to be held from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 1, will feature some special guestsbaby lambs.
“We were planning for this year’s breakfast, and our minister said, ‘A bunny really is not a religious symbol of Easter,’” recalled committee member Nancy Kulman. “He challenged us to come up with a better symbol than
the Easter Bunny.” The group came up with the idea of a lamb because the animal has a religious significance, she said, but then the real challenge began. “We had to find a lamb,” Kulman stated with a laugh.
It turned out the church organist raises sheep, and he had a mother ewe and baby lamb the church could use for the event. The committee also learned that a member of the vestry had a baby lamb as well. “We’re planning to have the mom and baby outside, weather permitting, and then

we’ll have another baby lamb inside,” Kulman shared. “People can take pictures and pet the animals.”
The breakfast will feature pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit, juice, coffee and treats. “We’ll give out some candy to all the kids as well,” Kulman remarked. From 9:30 to 10 a.m., people will be invited to color Easter eggs to take home with them. “Our sanctuary will also be open if anyone wants to look in,” she said.
There are separate fees for adults and for children ages 5 to 12 for the breakfast. There is no charge for children age 4 and under. There are no advance tickets for the breakfast, and cash will be accepted at the door. People should park on the street and use the side entrance to the church on South Chestnut Street. The church is located at 239 E. Market St., Marietta.
“This is a time of fellowship,” Kulman said, describing the breakfast. “It’s a friendly community event that’s very warm and welcoming to everyone.”

accreditation manager in training. “It’s things like ensuring we’re providing the correct type of response and all officers are following the correct procedures. It’s making sure all of our policies meet the standards. We reworked any that didn’t.”
The police building, located at 35 Walnut Springs Road, York, was also upgraded to include new security features that promote both officer safety and citizen safety, Bullman noted.
“One of the main focuses for us is, if we bring people into our station, we want to be sure they’re safe,” Heistand explained.
The standards for accreditation are very detailed, Bullman said. They include specifics such as when officers may use their lights and
sirens, how and when use of force is appropriate and when body cams must be turned on. Handling of evidence is also a major part of the standards, Heistand noted, adding that all evidence must be processed the same way, packaged correctly and handled correctly. “It’s a very uniform process we have to follow,” he said. “For everything, it doesn’t matter if it’s a big department like the Philadelphia Police Department or it’s the Hellam Township Police Department. The standards are the same.”
Although the department was eager to achieve accreditation, it took time and effort to reach the goal. “It was a bit of a learning curve for the officers,” Heistand said, “but they were all on board. They want to be better, too. They
were worried about the paperwork, because they thought there was going to be more than there was.”
Being an accredited department helps the Hellam police achieve a major goal, Heistand said. “It’s important that the community knows we have a standard,” he stated. “We have a specific set of rules we’re following. It gives us a sense of transparency and helps build trust. Our institution is devoted to showing the public we are going above and
beyond in everything we do.” PLEAC will recheck the department every three years to make sure standards are being followed and to recertify the accreditation, and Heistand welcomes the opportunity to demonstrate that the department takes the achievement seriously. “Accreditation makes us more accountable,” he said. “We can feel confident that we’re not only saying we know what we’re doing, but we are showing, it too.”

The house that Poppy built
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDAcorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation announced on March 7 that Poppy, a rescued groundhog and animal ambassador for the organization, had passed away. Acorn Acres will host a memorial for Poppy on Saturday, April 1, at Jack’s Family Tavern & Restaurant, 15 S. Prince St., Millersville. The event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. and will include light refreshments, children’s activities, cornhole and a silent auction. Although the event will be free, Acorn Acres asks attendees to consider making a donation, which will fund the groundhog caging at its facility.
Upon receiving the news of Poppy’s passing, several members of the community reached out to Acorn Acres’ founder, Betsy Shenk, to ask her if she would host a memorial. Shenk had originally planned to hold a baby shower-like event on April 1 to collect supplies for the rehab, as most wild animals begin raising their offspring during this time of year. April 1 would
have been Poppy’s fourth birthday, so Shenk decided to transform the event into a way to honor her memory and to provide the community with a way to benefit the other groundhogs at Acorn Acres. With the money raised from donations, Acorn Acres will erect housing for its groundhogs with a plaque that reads “The House That Poppy Built.” “It’s a way for us to remember her and to celebrate the incredible life of a little groundhog,” Shenk said. “This way, every little groundhog that goes through that house will benefit from Poppy.”
Poppy came into Shenk’s care in May 2019, after she was found without a mother
by a resident of Conestoga. The rehab that initially took Poppy in was having difficulty getting her to eat and transferred her to Shenk’s care, as Shenk specializes in rehabilitating rodents. Soon after, Shenk realized that the issue was caused by a malocclusion, a birth defect resulting in crooked teeth. Since groundhogs’ teeth grow perpetually and rely on the animal wearing them down, rodents with malocclusion that are unable to manage the length of their teeth are at risk of fatal health problems. Shenk only had three options: to euthanize Poppy, put her under anesthesia and trim her teeth every 10 days or remove her teeth altogether. Shenk decided to
remove Poppy’s teeth and train her as an animal ambassador, as she was unable to be released back into the wild.
Since becoming an ambassador for Acorn Acres, Poppy achieved remarkable feats for a groundhog, including starring in an NFL championship commercial in 2020 alongside Bill Murray. Poppy accompanied Shenk to dozens of events and animal rehabilitation centers to help educate thousands of people on groundhogs and the important roles they play in the ecosystem. Shenk estimated that Poppy helped to educate nearly 12,000 people during her time as an ambassador.
“I think one of the biggest things she did was make people smile during a difficult time,” Shenk said. “I would see people looking at this beautiful little creature and smiling behind their masks. As much as this is going to tear our hearts out, I think the community needs this opportunity to grieve and celebrate her.”
