Bleed,” Swisher remarked. “The Science Instruction session is the first time we have offered a STEM-related topic, and the Stop the Bleed session is a national program that instructs participants on how to control bleeding in an emergency situation.” All of the sessions are designed to improve the lives of students of all ages and abilities by effectively resourcing educators, professionals, parents, and others who have an interest in education. The theme of the conference is “Together … We Can Do So Much.” Swisher noted that the title is part of a quotation from Helen Keller, who said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” “When we work together for a common purpose, we can achieve things beyond our greatest imagination. This is especially true in education where we share the common goal of making a positive difference in the lives of students and their families,” said Kathy Rose, early childhood and special education services program director for IU 13. “This year’s conference focuses on collaborating and working as a team to educate all students through innovative approaches to teaching. IU 13 welcomes everyone who believes that each and every day ‘together we can do so much.’” The keynote speaker for the conference will be Jeremy Anderson, who has become an author, businessman, and motivational speaker after recovering from drug and alcohol abuse. who have served over 250 nonprofit organizations and thousands of constituents in state and local government. Approximately how many staff members and volunteers are involved? Joan: There are two fulltime staff members, five part-time staff members, and more than 200 volunteers. Did Leadership York participate in the inaugural Give Local York last year? Rabiya: Yes, it was fun and engaging, and there was great energy reverberating throughout the community. Our supporters helped us make it a successful event. Joan: It was very exciting to see York County raise so much money in just one day for organizations in need. It felt like a giant party, and everyone was invited! We had a table downtown and loved seeing everyone come downtown, enjoying a wonderful time and helping each other and supporting one another. What are the organization’s goals for 2019? Rabiya: Leadership York hopes to expand programming and implement our diversity task force ideas - which include increasing enrollment from underserved populations by being able to offer sponsorships and by encouraging companies to send their minority employees through our programs. We also plan to increase diversity on our board and educate other organizations on the importance of diversifying their boards. Joan: Leadership York is proud to announce the 30th anniversary of our Future Leaders of York (FLY) program, and we invite you to celebrate this milestone with us on May 3! together to find creative solutions to address the needs of nonprofits in our community. Starting in October, students attend monthly sessions to learn about various needs of local organizations, and by May, they are well on their way to making a difference. We are humbled to see these young change-makers transforming York County, but their work can only continue with the generous support of our donors. Each contribution made to Leadership York on May 3 for Give Local York will ensure that our FLY alumni continue to soar for years to come. For updates on our FLY students, follow us on social media. You’ll be amazed to learn what they’ve accomplished since graduating. Rabiya: FLY is designed for high school sophomores and juniors, who learn how to become lifelong, responsible, and active participants in their hometown community. The seven-month course trains, connects, and inspires York County youths to become actively engaged in their communities and helps them understand the importance of giving back and being a strong leader. Will funds raised through Give Local York be earmarked for any specific projects? Joan: Portions of the funds raised will go towards our scholarship fund to assist participants that qualify for financial assistance. Funds will also be used to improve our programs and services.

“(The Race Against Racism) is another way to forward the mission of empowering women and eliminating racism,” explained Bob Hebert, Lancaster YWCA director of communications and community engagement. “It’s a fundraiser for us, and it supports our social justice programming. Specifically, we host a social justice institute four times per year.” This year’s Race Against Racism, which Hebert noted is the longest-running consecutive race against racism in the country, will be held rain or shine on Saturday, April 27. The certified 5K course will begin in Musser Park, located at East Chestnut and North Lime streets in Lancaster, at 9 a.m. Following the run, Hebert said about 70 to 80 children typically take part in a Kids’ Fun Run, which spans Musser Park. The Fun Run will be held at about 10:30 a.m., when the run is completed and the course has been cleared. The Fun Run is open to children through age 12 for a nominal fee. The 12th annual Humanity Fest, a multicultural festival, will be held in Musser Park in conjunction with the race. Humanity Fest, which will be open from 7 to 11:30 a.m., is designed to celebrate the diversity of the local community. The event will feature food, face painting, and handmade crafts. “Community organizations will have displays,” said Hebert. “The YWCA will have a table, and our sexual assault prevention and counseling center will have a table set up.” The honorary chair of the 2019 race will be Norman Bristol Colon, who has been appointed by Gov. Tom Wolf to serve as executive director of the Governor’s 2020 Census Complete Count Commission. Colon was the first Latino/Hispanic assistant director of admissions at Millersville University (MU), where he was

responsible to implement MU’s first strategy for recruitment of Latino students. The model was later used by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Colon was a founder and first national chair of the United States Council on Latino Affairs, an organization formed to advance the status of more than 55 million Latinos living in the U.S. According to Hebert, funds raised by the race will help cover the costs associated with Racial Justice Institute - Parts One and Two, which the organization presents several times per year. “(Each part) is a three-day course that discusses systemic oppression and racism that goes on in the country and how to combat it,” explained Hebert. “(The institute) brings diverse people into the same room (to) learn about what racism is and (how to) respect each other’s backgrounds.” Part one of the institute is open to the public; to take part two, a participant needs to have taken part one or have other social justice training. Hebert researched the history of Lancaster’s Race Against Racism, which will be run for the 21st time this year. “From what I could find, it started in 1999, and it has been growing ever since,” said Hebert. “It was an initiative from the national YWCA.” Hebert explained that several other Races Against Racism will be held at the same time as the Lancaster race, including one in York and one in Harrisburg. The 5K course follows a route through Lancaster city. “(The course) goes down Chestnut and then by McCaskey (High School) and loops around back on Chestnut,” said Hebert, who warned runners to be wary of potholes. The course is lightly rolling with some incline toward the end and is considered good for beginners. Walkers are welcome. More information about the race may be found at https://ywcalancaster. org/raceagainstracism. Runners and walkers who register prior to Monday, April 8, will be guaranteed a T-shirt and pay a discounted fee. Water bottles will be given to registered runners while supplies last. Readers who wish to register online may do so by visiting the previously mentioned website. Registration on the day of the event will begin at 7 a.m. Teams are welcome to register online. EY Boy’s Lax Opens Season With Two Wins by Eric Pyles
The phrase ‘there is no place like home’ perfectly describes the start of the 2019 season for the Eastern York boy’s lacrosse team. The Golden Knights opened regular season action with a two-game home stand and a two-game winning streak. Eastern opened the season on March 22nd with a 13-10 victory over New Oxford but their March 25th victory over visiting Schuylkill Valley was more enjoyable for the home fans. Not only was the weather better suited for outdoor activities the Golden Knights, led by Bryce Henise, rolled to a 15-7 victory. Henise, the Robert Morris commit, picked up five goals while dishing out three assists to pace the offense. Gavin Evans and Jake Crumling combined for six goals with each enjoying their own hat trick. Cadeyn Michael and Gage Barton split the remaining four goals down the middle with Barton tacking on one assist. Kade Wiley kept the Panthers at bay with a six save effort. Wiley and Henise also led the way in the Golden Knights’ win over New Oxford. Henise kicked off his senior season with a five-goal game while Wiley tallied six saves in the win. Barton, Michael and Evans netted two goals each while Crumling and Zach Grove accounted for the final two scores. Eastern York saw their early season success come to a screeching halt with a road trip to Central York on the 26th. The Panthers snapped Eastern’s two game winning streak by handing the Golden Knights their first loss via a 203 final. Wiley posted his third straight six save game while Henise, Evans and Michael picked up one goal apiece. GIRL’S LACROSSE Mother Nature derailed what was scheduled as the season opener for
the Lady Golden Knight lacrosse team, moving the game at New Oxford to March 30th instead of the original March 22nd date. That meant the March 26th tilt opposite Central York dropped into season opening status for the Lady Golden Knights. Eastern, despite an 11-goal game from Addy Malone, fell to the Lady Panthers by a 22-15 final. VOLLEYBALL As the calendar quickly works its way through the final days of March, the Eastern York boys’ volleyball teams finds themselves in unpleasant territory. The Golden Knights sit at 0-2 after losses to Red Land and Central York that came via 3-0 finals. Eastern opened the season on March 22nd with the 3-0 loss to Red Land with the visiting Patriots posting wins of 2518, 25-20 and 25-22. Devyn Sanders ran point for the Golden Knights, tallying 25 assists and three digs while Brady Bixler did a bit of everything in the loss. Bixler finished with 16 kills, five digs, three blocks and two assists. Tim Leaman and Bobby Truell posted matching six digs games while Nolan Reichard added six kills, three blocks, two assists and one dig. A few days later the Golden Knights fell to Central York with the Panthers claiming the 3-0 victory, 258, 25-8 and 25-10. Sanders and Bixler were front in center in the loss. Sanders collected 15 assists and one kill while Bixler had seven kills, six digs, three assists and three blocks. Jake Kennell added four kills and five digs in the loss. BASEBALL The Eastern York baseball team finally made their season debut on March 27th, after seeing their kickoff pushed back twice due to weather and field conditions. Unfortunately, the result was a 2-1 loss to Biglerville. The Canners plated the game winning run in the top of the seventh, busting
up the 1-1 tie and handing Dyson Renn the loss. Renn relieved starter Evan Rishell in the seventh only to exit after surrendering Biglerville’s run. Jacob Bardo stepped in to record the final three outs, striking out one and walking one in the process. Rishell covered the first six innings surrendering an unearned run in the top of the fourth that knotted the game at 1-1. He finished his six innings of work with 10 punchouts and four walks to go with just two hits. Emmit Silar enjoyed a three hit game and accounted for Eastern’s lone run with his first inning base knock. Rishell, Bren Taylor, Quinton McNew and Justin Ranker all finished with one hit each apiece. TRACK The boy’s track team dropped their season opening meet to Susquehannock by an 87-63 final. Demonte Martin accounted for four of Eastern York’s eight wins, sweeping the hurdles while taking a leg of the victorious 1600m relay and topping the high jump competition. Martin cleared 6’ to take the high jump with his 15.1 taking the 110H and his 43.3 placing him first in the 300H. He also closed out the 1600m relay win as the anchor leg, joining forces with Tyrel Emig, Tyler Druck and Dylan Zurin for a 3:43.7. Zurin added a win in the long jump with a top leap of 19-8. Drake Brown picked up one solo win with a toss of 114-8 in the discus while also taking part in the 400m relay win. Brown, along with Dustin Robinson, Mason Behm and Hailu Barrow clocked a 49.3 to win the 400m relay. Pierre Allard picked up the final win with a time of 11:22.6 in the 3200m. SOFTBALL The softball team kicked off their season on March 26th with a 5-1 loss to Central York. Maelynn Leber absorbed the loss and was hit for all five runs but none were of the earned variety due to five Lady Golden Knight errors. Leber did pick up six strikeouts to go with three walks and seven hits. Lauren Breault picked up the lone RBI with her only hit of the game, a seventh inning double that pushed Haidyn Shaffer across the plate. Leber finished with two singles while Shaffer tallied three. Morgan Dobbeck and Gillian Toomey picked up the final two Eastern York hits, both singles. The Lady Golden Knights put one in the win column one day later, topping

Dallastown 3-2. Eastern plated two of their three runs in the bottom of the first and tacked on a needed insurance run in the fifth that helped counter the Lady Wildcats rally in the fifth and sixth innings. Leber tossed another six innings to get the win while Morgan Estes picked up the save with a scoreless seventh.
