Bringing art outdoors

You’ll have a chance to see artists in action when River Towns Plein Air (RTPA) is held throughout the Columbia and Marietta areas. Sixty artists will compete for $5,000 in cash awards during the juried exhibition that concludes the event, and artists will paint en plein airoutdoors - leading up to the show.

All things Pennsylvania

Community members are invited to discover or rediscover many of the events, museums, attractions and getaways that Pennsylvania has to offer at the fifth annual PA Family Travel Fair, to be held on Saturday, April 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Calvary Church in Lancaster. The event, hosted by Where & When Pennsylvania, will also feature children’s activities, entertainment and food.

Those who visit the travel fair will also have opportunities to win prizes, including vacation packages. “The first 500 (attendees) will get a goodie bag to collect all of their swag from all of the vendors,” said Rachel Stebbins, marketing director at Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., one of the

event organizers. “There is a lot of opportunity throughout the event to register for prizes. Almost all of the vendors are bringing prizes to give away.” The grand prize will be a family getaway provided by the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau.

The event focuses on providing information about family-friendly activities that are available throughout the entire state, including locally in Lancaster County and as far away as the northern tier of Pennsylvania.

“When you are talking to vendors, they are not trying to sell you things. They are just providing information,” Stebbins emphasized. “The visitor’s bureaus will represent a lot of the (sites) in their areas, but we also have (representatives of) specific attractions that are coming to talk specifically about their places.”

Entertainment will include a magic show at noon by Papa Tater Magical Family Entertainment and a live show at 2 p.m. by Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland. Echo the Bat from Lincoln Caverns and Chipper from Herr Foods Inc. will greet visitors, and the Kids Cookie Break radio show will be on-site doing live interviews. Visitors will also be able to meet friendly service dogs from Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS).

Food trucks will be available offering breakfast and lunch, as well as snacks and ice cream. New this year will be Joe on the GO Coffee Co., which will offer coffee, tea and breakfast selections.

Stebbins hopes that people will attend the event to learn about local attractions they may not even

be aware of. “It’s nice to have options with what you can do without having to travel really far,” she stated. “You can have a nice, long weekend or you can go out and do some of these activities and be home at night because it’s just that close. People often don’t realize what is right around them.”

Calvary Church is located at 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Admission to and parking at the PA Family Travel Fair are free. The event will be held rain or shine. RTPA is organized by Marietta Art Alive! The nonprofit is dedicated to cultivating art, heritage and recreation in the lower Susquehanna River Valley. The activities will begin on Wednesday, April 12, when artists will paint outdoors in locations along the Lancaster and York sides of the Susquehanna River. Artists come from across Pennsylvania and as far away as Connecticut and New York, said Marita Hines, owner of MH Art Gallery and co-founder of Marietta Art Alive! Each artist will choose a location, paint his or her pieces between April 12 and Wednesday, April 19, and then display the resulting artwork from Friday, April 21, through Sunday, April 23, at Studio 264, located behind the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St. Gary Tucker will be the juror for the exhibition, which is open to the public and free to attend. People will also have the opportunity to purchase the artwork.

On Saturday, April 15, RTPA will feature a Quick Draw event from 10 a.m. to noon. Open to artists of all ages, this competition will challenge community members to choose a location from a map and paint for two hours before framing their art and setting the finished product up on an easel in the block of the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St. Matt Allyn Chapman, co-owner of Curio, will be the juror for the Quick Draw. “Children are invited to participate this year, and we’ll be giving them free art supplies while they last,” Hines commented. Children’s artwork will be unframed, and children do not need to register for the Quick Draw. Participants age 18 and older may register at the Columbia Market House on the morning of the event or at www.mariettaartalive.com/qd. The rain date for the Quick Draw will be Sunday, April 16.

Music studio sets

“Under the Sea” camp

Sopranojam Music Studio will hold its next monthly introductory mini camp, “Under the Sea,” on Saturday, April 15, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Students ages 6 to 12 are invited to join in the morning of singing, acting, choreography, and crafts. The purpose of the mini camp is to provide children with the opportunity to learn new skills while focusing on fun and friends. It is intended to introduce youths to the performing arts without a long-term commitment.

Mini camps are held once per month through June. May’s event, set for Saturday, May 13, will take place from 10 a.m. to noon. Students ages 6 to 10 will participate in the mini camp program, “Broadway Hits,” and will

sing, act, and dance to Broadway classics such as “Annie,” “The Sound of Music,” and “Newsies.” Students ages 11 to 16 will participate in an age-appropriate Teen Broadway Workshop to enhance their improv, acting, singing, and dance skills.

Registration is required by the Monday before each camp, and there is a per-student fee.

Sopranojam Music Studio is located in Dayspring Christian Academy at 120 College Ave., Mountville. In addition to the monthly mini camps, the studio offers a summer Discover Your Voice Camp, with singing and piano lessons beginning in the fall. For more information and to sign up for any of the camps, visit www.soprano jamstudio.com.

Reformed Felons Panel scheduled

Proceeds from RTPA will be used to fund more art events in the community, Hines said. “The plein air event brings in hundreds of new and returning visitors to the river towns,” she noted. “The quality of the artwork at the show continues to get better each year, draw in more patrons and art lovers.” This year, in addition to the plein air event, Marietta Art Alive! was able to fund two themed juried art shows“Song for Autumn” and “Spaces Within.”

RTPA also provides an opportunity for collaboration with other local organizations, Hines remarked. “Create Columbia organized the Quick Draw for us this year,” she stated. “All proceeds from that event go to their nonprofit organization. Over time, it is our desire to get more organizations and businesses in the river towns involved in this event.”

The exhibition and sale will run from 5 to 9 p.m. on April 21; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 22; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 23. For more information, visit www.mariettaartalive.com.

The Advantage Program York will host the Reformed Felons Panel on Saturday, April 8, from noon to 3 p.m. at DreamWrights Center for Community Arts, 100 Carlisle Ave., York. The Reformed Felons Panel will provide opportunities to meet 10 community members who learned from the mistakes that led them to prison and then not only successfully reentered the community but also flourished to positively impact their community.

The panel questions will cover a variety of topics, and the discussion will be facilitated by host and keynote speaker Tavon Parker. Other speakers will include Judge Kraft, Judge Flannelly, and District Attorney Dave Sunday.

The event is open to the public. Registration is required, and there is a nominal fee. For more details and registration, visit https://the advantageprogramyork.org /events-1.

Children’s book teaches about talking to God

“When we include God in our day, God shows us amazing things,” said author Krista Snyder. Krista, who lives in Elizabethtown, has published a book with this message. “Basil’s Blessings: My Special Day With God” is geared toward children ages 4 to 7. It tells the story of Basil, a little inchworm, and the adventures he encounters with a bluebird named BB.

Although the book was published in December 2021, the story was much longer in the making, Krista said. “This was a 20-year project for me,” she remarked. “When God wants something to happen, He makes it happen in His time.”

Krista’s original story wasn’t religious, although it was full of positive messages. Over the years, she kept coming back to the draft, tweaking and changing it. Teaching 4year-olds at her church, St. Peter Catholic Church in Elizabethtown, helped Krista change the scope of her story.

“God helped me to develop this story,” she stated. “Everything in my story, God helped me to write.”

During the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, Krista reached out to Caracyn Publishing, a Grantville-based publisher, about her story. The finished product, illustrated by Nancy Landis, is a book that features multiple themes. “One of the themes is from 1 Thessalonians 5:17, ‘pray without ceasing,’” said Krista, who works as a purchasing agent for G.E. Richards Graphic Supplies in Landisville. “My job is stressful, and I pray my way through my day. My book shows kids how easy it is in every moment of the day to talk to God. My inchworm talks to God and includes God in his day.”

Another theme in the book comes from Isaiah 6:3, “The whole earth is full of His glory,” and the book also stresses the importance of loving your enemies and talking to others about God. The story also teaches a lesson

about the power of God. “Who would think a bluebird and an inchworm would become friends?” Krista said. “But with God, anything is possible.”

Krista included three songs she wrote the lyrics for in the book as well as activity pages and facts about inchworms and dandelions. On her website, www.kristasnyderbooks.com, readers may download several lesson plans she wrote that are connected to the book as well.

When she’s not writing, Krista enjoys spending time with her husband, Mike, and their dog, Buffy. A portion of the proceeds of each book sold will benefit Brittany’s Hope, an Elizabethtownbased organization that supports adoption of children with special needs.

Krista said she has ideas for more books, and she’d love to turn Basil’s story into a series. She hopes that anyone who picks up “Basil’s Blessings” will read it and come away with a renewed relationship with God. “I truly believe if a child learns to talk to God

when he or she is young, they will turn into an amazing individual when they grow up,” she said.

“Basil’s Blessings: My Special Day With God” is available for purchase at Trellis Marketplace, 153 E. High St., Elizabethtown; Vintage & Co., 3545 Marietta Ave., Lancaster; Weinhold Chiropractic, 535 Farmview Lane, Mount Joy; and www.kristasnyder books.com. Krista will sell and sign copies of her book at an Art, Craft and Yard Sale at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 409 Cherry St., Columbia, on Saturday, June 3.

Prince St., Lancaster. Sandoval, who moved to Lancaster in 2013, is a Peruvian-Argentinian musical artist who studied in Buenos Aires and has traveled widely, sharing his music through several Latin American countries. He will be joined at the Ware Center by some of his local musician friends to present a 45-minute concert of Latin rock; pop, including romantic songs by Andrea Bocelli; and music from Latin American folklore.

Additionally, an opening reception will be held from 6
