Kurtis Timmer, the chief and public information officer with the South Central PA Search and Rescue, answered the following questions: What is the mission of the South Central PA Search and Rescue? How does the organization work to achieve its goal? The South Central PA Search and Rescue Team is a search and rescue team based in York County. The team was developed to help local emergency services and communities deal with lost and or missing persons, no matter what the situation entails. The team is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We are a “support” team that local fire, rescue, EMS, police water rescue, emergency managers, and other emergency agencies can call upon to assist in mitigating any incident involving a lost or missing person. The team operates with ground search crews, K-9 search teams, mountain bike search teams, water rescue teams, and community emergency response teams (CERT). Once requested, the team will respond and operate as a support team under the incident commander for the incident at hand. We will assist in the overall event as a mutual aid agency.

endeavors. We learned that this is a great way to help tell our story of who we are and what we do for the community. What are the organization’s goals for Give Local York 2019? Our goal this year is to raise public awareness of what we do and to raise funds for the team. All funds are put back into the team for operations. We use funds raised to purchase much-needed equipment for our team. Our team performs multiple operations, from search and rescue to assisting with water rescue and CERT operations. Each operation requires various types of equipment, ranging from rope rescue gear to boat equipment, water rescue gear, K-9 equipment, communications gear, and much more. The only funding we receive is from fundraising events such as this or via grants and donations. Aside from performing search and rescue operations, our team conducts several public relations events each year. We provide educational and training events for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and other community organizations. Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed? Funds raised through Give Local York will greatly assist the team in purchasing much-needed equipment. For example, if we raise $10,000, we can dedicate $1,300 toward the purchase of an AED; $4,000 toward additional water rescue gear for both our water rescue personnel and K-9; $2,000 for additional communication gear used during search operations; and $2,700 for rope rescue gear used during rescue operations. All of this equipment is needed for both the search and rescue operations the team provides and the CERT operations we provide to the community as well.

Apollo Advertising in York. She remained at the company until 1968. Commercial art in the 1950s and ’60s involved all hand drawing, including the lettering. Pencil sketches were made on tracing paper as the ad was being developed, and acrylic painting or colored pencil drawing were used for the finished art. One of Robinson’s favorite annual projects at Apollo Advertising was the Christmas toy catalog cover. She won a national award for her 1967 Christmas cover. Outside of work, Robinson painted for personal enjoyment using oils and watercolors as well as colored pencils. She took oil painting classes from local artist Henry Libhart. She painted both still lifes and landscapes. In the 1970s, she taught art at St. Joseph’s Academy and Holy Trinity School. She often found time to continue painting and drawing. Our team typically responds to approximately 25 calls a year. Our team members are very professional and certified in various aspects of search and rescue as well as EMS, fire police, firefighting, water rescue, hazardous materials, the National Incident Management System (NIMS), and several other certifications that support the overall team operations. The team responds to seven different counties surrounding York County. We conduct training at least once a month, with team members attending various certification classes throughout the year, aside from the team training. We provide educational classes to the public as requested and attend several public events to assist in public awareness of search and rescue. Our team is dedicated to assisting those in their time of need “So Others May Live.” Approximately how many staff members and volunteers are involved? Our team is a 100 percent volunteer, nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization and has no paid/full-time staff. The team has approximately 51 team members and has both an executive board and operational officers. The executive board handles the administrative portion of the team’s daily operations. The executive board has various committees, such as those for bylaws, fundraising, finance, and training, to mention a few. The operational officers consist of the chief officers and line officers. The operational officers handle the operational portion during callouts for both search and rescue and CERT operations. Did South Central PA Search and Rescue participate in the inaugural Give Local York last year? Yes, we did, and it was a learning experience for our team as we worked with those that organized the event. This was a first-ofa-kind of experience for us in our fundraising

How does the organization work to achieve its goals? The mission of United Way of York County is to build a stronger, caring community by cultivating financial generosity, volunteerism, and advocacy. United Way collaborates with other public and private organizations to engage the community in addressing the complex issues facing York County. By developing initiatives that get at the root causes of these issues, United Way and its partners find solutions and fund programs that improve the lives of people in York County. Through gifts to the Community Fund, United Way is able to invest those dollars into 74 programs supported by 37 partner agencies. These programs address human services needs across three focus areas: education, health, and financial stability. This enables United Way to address the immediate and continuing needs of York County families and individuals and to create real, lasting change that matters to you and the community. approximately 23 people and engages more than 1,000 volunteers annually through its board of directors, committees, and volunteer projects such as Day of Action. Did United Way of York County partic ipate in the inaugural Give Local York last year? This is United Way of York County’s first year participating in Give Local York, although the organization provided a match for our partner agencies that participated in 2018. We chose to participate in Give Local York this year to raise funds for a special education initiative to place books into the hands of children in York County who need them most and to improve reading success. What are the organization’s goals for Give Local York 2019? A child’s access to age-appropriate books is key to reading proficiency and long-term school success. Our promise at United Way of York County is to place books into the hands of children in York County who need them, to improve reading success. Last year, more than 67,000 books were read through #yorkreads initiatives! We want to do more, but United Way of York County currently has limited capacity to pick up and distribute large-volume donations of books. We need a better process to match the generous donations from our community! Our goal through Give Local York is to raise $30,000 for a dedicated #yorkreads van

with a larger loading size, to increase our ability to reach more children. Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed? Funds raised through Give Local York will go directly to the #yorkreads van, including purchase of the vehicle, wrapping of the vehicle, and ongoing costs for support. Your donation supports the ability for United Way to reach more children in need, expanding our current #yorkreads initiatives to join other community events and outreach, such as distributing books through our mobile Reading Ready Corners at large-scale special events across the county. Regular access to reading is strongly linked to improved academic performance. Children demonstrate better focus and concentration and improve their communication skills at a young age - things we all want for every child in our community.

In 2004, dancers Jennifer Berlet and Cynthia Nehr, along with a dance student and several of their friends, formed NetCo Dance Company. “NetCo” stands for “Network of Community.” “More than 30 people from all around Lancaster County have been involved as members over the years. They come from various backgrounds. Most everybody has a dance background, but we’ve had people who do martial arts or are competition cheerleaders,” Berlet said. She pointed out that early dance troupes attempted to make everyone look and dance the same, but NetCo was created to be different. “I look very much at the individual, their personality and charisma. I want them to be themselves doing the movement. Diversity strengthens the community.” Because of the diversity of participants, NetCo shows use ballet technique as their basis, but with a modern dance twist. Accompaniment tends to lean toward instrumental, with compositions by Philip Glass, Glenn Kotche, and others. Berlet described NetCo shows as avant-garde, quirky, and somewhat feminist, while having a social justice outlook. For the company’s grand performance on Saturday, April 27, a show called “Moving Past” has been created. Immigration issues will be highlighted during the show’s six pieces, which Berlet has coordinated with guest choreographer Franklin & Marshall College professor Pamela Veil. “Our theme runs parallel to what’s happening in the world and newspaper headlines,” Berlet remarked. She noted that during one of the pieces, President John F. Kennedy’s televised address to the nation on civil rights on June 11, 1963, will accompany the dance. “It was right when

three black students were going to attend the University of Alabama and needed protection,” Berlet said. She expressed her frustration that race issues are still a part of today’s culture. “We still see a divided nation,” she said. “But when you strip away … all the adjectives to describe people, we’re pretty much the same underneath.” Another piece, titled “Tunnel Vision,” will be a truly multimedia production, with the use of music, video, and confetti. The images will highlight the Berlin Wall, Ellis Island, and the #MeToo movement, asking the question, “How far have we really come?” “We get fixated on one point and everything else disappears,” Berlet com- NetCo Dance Company will present “Moving Past” on April 27 mented. “I think there are lots of other at the Ware Center in Lancaster. Bryce Henise led a quartet of one goal scorers by adding two assists to his lone score. Cadeyn Michael, Ryan Emlet and Steven Wisler finished out that quartet. Two days later the Golden Knights traveled for a Saturday showdown with Conestoga Valley. Eastern used a strong second half to turn a 5-3 halftime deficit into a 7-6 victory thanks in large part to 11 Wiley saves and a hat trick and one assist from Henise. Crumling and Barton picked up two scores apiece while Michael finished with one goal. Eastern York made it two in a row with a 15-1 thumping of Dover on April 8th. Five different players netted two goals but it was Henise and his three scores and one assist that paced the offense. Michael, Barton, Crumling, Evans and Wisler were two-goals scorers with Evans (two assists) and Wisler (one assist) helping to set the table for others. Jack Deardorf joined the fun with one goal and one assist while Zach Grove added one goal. Wiley enjoyed the easy win with just four saves. The Golden Knights found themselves on the opposite end of things on the 10th with a 13-3 loss to Red Lion. Wiley finished the loss with seven saves while Barton (two goals) and Henise (one goal) accounted for the scoring. Bixler collected five kills, five blocks and two digs while Nolan Reichard added eight assists, three kills, one dig and one block. SOFTBALL The softball team split their last four games to move to 4-3 on the year. The Lady Golden Knights kicked off that stretch on April 4th with a 2-1 loss to Northeastern. Maelynn Leber took the hard luck loss, pitching all seven innings with just six hits and two sixth inning runs. She tallied 12 of those 21 outs via punch out while walking two. Kelsey Felix collected a one out triple in the seventh setting the stage for Haidyn Shaffer’s RBI fielder’s choice. Leber’s big hit came as a two-run single in the seventh but her fourth inning double put Eastern on the board. Katie Lehman went hitless but pushed one of Eastern’s sixth inning runs across with her sac fly. Leber allowed six hits and all three New Oxford runs but three Lady Golden Knight errors led to two of those being unearned. Eastern played their third game in as many days on the 10th, falling to Susquehannock 5-4. Leber accounted for half of Eastern’s four runs, smacking a two-run homerun in the third that gave the Lady Golden Knights a short lived 3-1 lead. Buchmyer added an RBI triple in the first with Dobbeck collecting two singles in the loss. BASEBALL The baseball team slid to 4-2 after splitting their past two contests. The Golden Knights absorbed a 4-1 loss to Bermudian Springs on April 8th. Eastern managed just three hits with Bren Taylor’s first inning single leading to a 1-0 lead. That advantage stood until the fifth inning when Bermudian moved in front with a two-run frame. Owen Shimmel was on the mound when the Eagles made their move, putting the righty on the hook for the loss. He surrendered all 12 of Bermudian’s hits as well as all four of their runs to go with seven strike outs and three walks. Evan Rishell used a 13 pitch, two strikeout seventh, to finish the game. Emmit Silar and Jacob Bardo accounted for the remaining two Eastern hits with Silar’s first inning single following Taylor’s, allowing him to score on an ensuing Bermudian error. Eastern moved back into the winner’s circle on the 10th with an 8-1 victory over Kennard-Dale. This time it was Rishell earning the win, fanning 13 and walking three while allowing all five KD hits and their lone, unearned run. Dyson Renn needed two pitches to finish after Rishell reached his pitch limit. Rishell helped his own cause with a three hit, three RBI day at the plate. Two of those hits were triples but his second inning single did as much damage as all three hits pushed one run across. Silar matched Rishell’s fourth inning RBI triple with one of his own as part of his two-hit game. Justin Ranker and Drew Dellinger each poked an RBI single in the sixth to account for their lone hits while Bardo collected an RBI while going hitless.

Tide Softball Faces Section Three Opponents Hallie McCoy showed off her skills with her arm and bat during the game as well. She went 3-3 with two bunt singles and had three stolen bags. She also had perfect relays from center field. It seems like her transition from catcher went well this year. Waugh was solid with the bat as well as she put the Tide on the scoreboard in the third inning. Mel Rodriguez drove in Erika Mummaw in the fourth for their two runs. Hopefully they can build off that confidence. They look to keep up the hard work and continue to gain experience. Columbia’s next game is at home against Elco on Wednesday, April 17th at 4:15pm. They currently sit fifth in the L-L League Section Four behind Pequea Valley, Lancaster Catholic, and AnnvilleCleona, and are within striking distance of Lancaster Mennonite, as they are only 2-5 on the year. Lebanon Catholic is at the bottom of section currently sitting winless on the young season. The Crimson Tide still have 10 games remaining, including nine league games to right the ship. BASEBALL The baseball team followed the girls lead and is also struggling this season, currently sitting at 2-6 overall while 2-5 in the league. They picked up their two wins against Lancaster Mennonite and Lebanon Catholic beating them 15-6 and 15-0 respectively. When they beat Lebanon Catholic at the end of March it was the first time they shut out an opponent and so far the only time this season. Zac Nikolaus and Ryan Redding are leading the way for the Tide. Nikolaus is 1-1 on the season with 12 strikeouts while Redding is 1-2 also with 12 k’s on the year. The boys are sitting fourth in the L-L league Section Four standings. They are behind Lancaster Catholic, AnnvilleCleona, and Pequea Valley. Although Pequea Valley is only a game ahead of them while Lancaster Mennonite and Lebanon Catholic are below the Tide. They boys have 12 games left overall and 10 games left in the league to make up some ground. TRACK Columbia’s track and field team is depleted but they are still competing hard this year. Both teams are unfortunately 0-3 on the season. Justin Elliot has a win in the high jump, clearing 5-6 as his best jump against Lancaster Catholic. Their next meet is against Annville Cleona who is only 1-2 on the year so they could gain some ground in the standings with a win. Currently Donegal, Lancaster Catholic, Elco, and Octorara are ahead of them in the standings. Columbia looks to move up in the standings as they do have seven more meets left with two of them being larger meets with many teams included. Columbia’s girls also have not faired very well but again are competing hard this year. They are very low in numbers so most teams have many more participants then they do. Columbia suffered a 135-10 loss to Elco, fell 124-11 to Donegal, and dropped a 128-9 result against Lancaster Catholic. Jordan Sabina has one win in 100 hurdles at 20.6 as her best time and another win in the long jump with a 13-10 measurement. It is still early so there is plenty of time The girls picked up their one very short win of the year against Lebanon Catholic on March 31st. The Crimson Tide got going early allowing one run in the top frame but answered with 21 of their own in the bottom half leading to the mercy rule being evoked. Most recently the tide has not been going in their favor though dropping an 11-1 game Thursday night to Northern Lebanon, scoring only in the sixth inning. Emily Waugh was in the circle, recording three strikeouts. She has 14 strikeouts on the year. Waugh shined with six strikeouts at Octorara Wednesday afternoon. Although the girls did lose the game 4-7, they battled all the way to the end. They had a chance the entire game but could not capitalize. The Tide scored single runs in the first and second innings before Octorara tied the game with two in the bottom of the third. Columbia forged ahead in the fifth with another single run but the Braves took the lead for good with a four spot in the bottom half. The hosts out hit the Tide 11-5 and committed one less error, 4-3. The freshman Waugh also showed her Staff photo worth against Cocalico. Camp Invention, a nationally recognized, nonprofit summer enrichment camp program, will visit the local area. A program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF) in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Camp Invention challenges children in kindergarten through grade six to find their inner inventor by learning the process of innovation. Each year, the program features a new curriculum inspired by worldchanging inventors - the NIHF

inductees. Using hands-on activities, Camp Invention aims to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning; build confidence, leadership, perseverance, resourcefulness, and problem-solving skills; and encourage entrepreneurship in a fun and engaging environment. Camp Invention will be held at three area locations. South Eastern Intermediate School, Fawn Grove, will host a camp from Monday, June 10, through Thursday, June 13. A second

session will be held at Cornwall Elementary School from Monday, July 8, through Friday, July 12. Finally, a camp will be offered at Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 from Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19. This year’s Supercharged curriculum features several video challenges from inductees that encourage children to be confident in their ideas and explore their innovativeness. Hands-on activities include Innovation Force, Deep Sea Mystery, Farm

Tech, and DIY Orbot. Activities will range from digging up fossils and inventing island survival tools to learning how to manage a farm and reverse engineering a remote-controlled robot. At the end of the program, each camper will bring home a robot. All local Camp Invention programs are facilitated and taught by certified educators who reside and teach in the community. For additional information, readers may visit www.invent.org/camp.
