Mount Bethel Cemetery will host events

MountBethel Cemetery, 700 Locust St., Columbia, will be full of activity during the weekend of Friday, April 28, to Sunday, April 30. On April 28, Columbia artist Bill Clark will display his work in the cottage on the property from 5 to 8 p.m. He will show the artwork again on April 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. Light refreshments will be available during both shows.

A self-taught artist, Clark began painting when he was 68 years old, seven years after he retired from Lancaster Newspapers. He mostly uses acrylics, and he enjoys painting landscapes, flowers and buildings, especially European homes and farm outbuildings. “Most are painted from memory, especially from Bill’s extensive travels,” said Claire Storm, secretary of the Mount Bethel Board of Directors and Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery. Clark will be present on both dates to answer questions about his artwork, and the paintings will be for sale.

On April 30, the cemetery board will recognize three men and four women who have made outstanding

Library will host book sale

Stop by the Kreutz Creek Library spring book sale, and you’re sure to pick up a bargain.

“We have tons of fiction for all ages and a lot of nonfiction books - historical, local interest, gardening, do-it-yourself, biography and memoirs,” said Edward Ritter, chair of the sale. “We have something for everyone.”

The sale will be held at the Hellam Township Public Works Building, 44 Walnut Springs Road,

York, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, April 28, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 29.

Along with books, the sale will feature jewelry, baked goods and lots of puzzles. “Puzzles became really popular during the pandemic, and they are still popular,” Ritter said. “They go fast.”

The sale will offer people the opportunity to fill a bag for $5 beginning at noon on Saturday. “We have tote bags donated by Stelter Dodge, and people can use those or fill a bag of similar size,” Ritter said.

contributions to the cemetery, Storm stated. A monument that has been recently installed in their honor will be dedicated at 2 p.m.

The honorees are Susanna Wright, the daughter of town founder John Wright. She compiled a list of names of the people who were buried in the cemetery between 1730 and 1750. Following the custom of the Society of Friends, also known as Quakers, most of the graves had no tombstones, Storm explained. Susanna gave her land for the cemetery. Helen Schlossman, a Columbia Borough teacher born in 1909, will also be honored. A member of the Pennsylvania State Retired Teachers Association and a volunteer at the Columbia library, Schlossman died in 2001, leaving part of her estate to Mount Bethel. The third female honoree, Marjorie Heim, was born in 1919 and was a member of the Columbia Presbyterian Church. She also left part of her estate to the cemetery. The fourth woman to be honored on the monument is Anne Schwartz Hoehn, a former Mount Bethel board member who helped with the entry of burials into the cemetery’s database. An artist and

collector, she died in 2020, leaving part of her estate to the cemetery as well.

The three men who will be honored are current board members John Hinkle Jr., David Mountz and Ronald Mable. As Storm explained, the cemetery was in disrepair in the late 20th century. In 1994, the three men were part of a committee to discuss the future of the cemetery and the funding required to restore it. They had a rough start getting funding, Storm said, noting, “At that time, they relied totally on donations from the community.” Several years ago, the nonprofit Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery was formed to ease the financial burden through fundraising events.

For the dedication ceremony, board member Kathy Hohenadel will serve as master of ceremonies. Local thespian Janet Wood will portray Susanna Wright.

“Mount Bethel is where our town founders are interred, including Susanna Wright, and it’s rich in history,” Storm said. “Visitors will learn about a segment of Columbia history, and members of the board will be available to answer any questions they may have.”

Partnership expands nonprofit’s reach

When Angie Kreider’s mother, Sharon Atkins, passed away in October of 2021, the Columbia woman wanted to find a way to honor her mom’s life. Kreider and her father, Bob Atkins, created Nanny’s Nighties, using the nickname Sharon’s grandchildren gave her. The nonprofit organization provides high-quality nightgowns to residents of government-funded facilities who don’t have the money or family resources for the items.

After a story ran in the Merchandiser last November, Kate West from

Lancaster County-based Velrose /Shadowline Lingerie contacted Kreider, and a partnership was born. “I saw Nanny’s Nighties in my local Merchandiser and thought, ‘What a lovely thought,’” recalled West, director of operations. Kreider and West struck up a conversation, and West offered to sell nightgowns to the organization at cost, approximately $10 per piece.

“This partnership will be instrumental in allowing us to serve so many more people,” Kreider stated. “I was floored knowing how many more women that meant I would be able to serve since we typically spend upwards of $25 per item.”

Kreider met with West at the Velrose warehouse in New Holland in late February, and she picked up 150 gowns to be distributed this month. A nightgown may seem like a simple gift, but it makes a big impression on the recipient, Kreider explained, adding, “A nightgown is a way someone can feel special and feel beautiful.”

Hot dogs will be for sale, and water will be donated by Jack Giambalvo Hyundai. “The hot dogs are a standard feature of our sale, and people love them,” said Jennifer Johnson, library branch manager.

The sale is organized by the Friends of the Kreutz Creek Library. Proceeds will support library programming. “The Friends group is responsible for raising part of our operating costs, so the sale underscores to me how important their support is, and, of course, how important the support of the community is, too, as they come to the sale,” Johnson stated.

The Friends group holds two sales annually, one in the fall and one in the spring, and Johnson noted that pulling off the event is a group effort. “It takes a village to get this going,” she remarked. “There are opportunities year-round to support the book sale, from sorting books during the year to moving books and setting up the sale, to helping visitors find what they’re looking for, to tearing down.”

The event also relies on the support of students from York College of Pennsylvania, who volunteer their time at the sale. “They are very enthusiastic, and they are willing to do the heavy lifting,” Johnson commented. “We’re really happy to utilize that resource.”

REVIVAL MEETING!

Any leftover books at the end of the sale are either kept for future sales or donated to the Mennonite Central Committee, which then sells them around the globe, Ritter said.

Added Johnson, “In effect, there are no unused books at our sale, because every book ends up in somebody’s hands.”

The book sale will accept cash, checks or credit cards. For more information, visit www.york libraries.org/hellam-kreutz-creek.

Find resources at the Community Building Blocks Expo

“They say if you want to succeed, it’s who you know,” said Deb Schleh, extolling the benefits of networking. “We believe it’s what you know and who you know.” Schleh, a member of the Friends of Donegal, said that’s the motivation behind the Community Building Blocks Expo, an event designed to introduce the community to services available to everyone.

The expo will be held on Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. along Delta and Henry streets and inside the reception center at Sheetz Funeral Home, 16 E. Main St., Mount Joy. A rain date is scheduled for Saturday, May 6.

As Schleh explained, the idea for the expo came from a community dinner held at the end of a Getting Ahead class offered by Friends of Donegal, a nonprofit created to be a one-stop shop to help close the gaps between needs and services in the community. “At the dinner, we invited people in from different organizations in the community,” she recalled, noting that Getting Ahead is a class designed to help people get ahead financially rather than just getting by. “Part of Getting Ahead is not only to help participants gain skills, but also to give back to the community. Out of the community dinner came the idea, ‘Why not do this on a larger scale?’”

The expo will feature a wide vari-

ety of nonprofit organizations and businesses, all geared toward providing services ranging from financial support to housing. Members of the Mount Joy Borough Police Department, EMS and fire department will be on-site as well.

Nancy Stehman, a member of the expo committee, said the Getting Ahead class opened her eyes to community resources. “I realized I could make connections and build my social capital through networking,” she stated. “People might not realize there is free medical care. People might not have a good relationship with the police. Coming to the expo will give them the opportunity to come out and talk to the police, to learn about programs and services that could benefit them.”

Along with information tables, the expo will feature activities for

people of all ages, Stehman said, adding, “We’ll have fun and games, too. We’ll have food trucks. It’s a family event.”

A silent auction of items, including paintings by a local artist, themed baskets and gift cards to local businesses, will help cover the operational costs of Getting Ahead and its follow-up class, Staying Ahead.

Christina Helfrick, vice president of Friends of Donegal, explained that both programs are open to anyone in the community who’s interested. “We’ve grown the program over the years to focus on interactivity with the community and building bridges,” she stated. “Part of the expo is about building bridges between community members and organizations.”

There will be an opportunity to sign up for a Getting Ahead or Staying
