When nursery teacher Dawn realized that Sherry, the mother of one of her students, was on the verge of homelessness, she connected her to Bridge of Hope @ Good Samaritan Services (GSS). The program saved Sherry, the mother of four, after a family conflict jeopardized their living arrangement. Dawn also pulled together a “neighboring” group at their church, which became an essential support system for Sherry during her two years in the Bridge of Hope See Golf Outing pg 2
Sherry (left) received a Certificate of Achievement after graduating from Bridge of Hope @ Good Samaritan Services’ two-year program. She was congratulated by Christy Stoltzfus, the family resource coordinator who worked with her.

program. Through those essential two years, Sherry learned budgeting skills, was promoted in her full-time work and found permanent housing for her family. Sherry is just one example of the many women that Bridge of Hope @ GSS has helped become independent and successful. Bridge of Hope @ GSS aims to reduce homelessness among all women and children in the local community. From 2017 to 2018, its Permanent Housing Services program served 208 women and children, provided $87,792 in rental assistance to single mothers across Lancaster and Chester counties and helped 12 families graduate from the program, according to www.goodsamservices.org. The organization’s services include case management and goal planning, resource development, life skills and parenting support, mentoring/volunteer support and financial assistance for rent, utilities and transportation. In 2017, Good Samaritan Services took Bridge of Hope Lancaster and Chester Counties under its wing via a merger between the nonprofits. Both had the same mission but offered different services, so combining allowed them to be even more effective in accomplishing their goals. “As a result of the merger, families in our Bridge of Hope @ GSS program can now participate in our Matched Savings and

Students’ Collection from pg 1 The Wrightsville Elementary students who participate in the Bible Adventure Program (formerly known as Released Time) are again collecting soda tabs to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). The soda tabs are recycled, and proceeds will help to cover the costs for families to stay at Ronald McDonald House. The Ronald McDonald House is a place where families can stay for free while their children are in the Hershey Medical Center, which is located near the house. The facility provides the families with a place to stay that is close to their children, and they do not have to pay for a place to stay or food to eat, nor do they need to do laundry. A play room for siblings is also provided. The Bible Adventure Program participants collect the tabs every year. The students then take the tabs to the Ronald McDonald House, where they are given a tour of the facility so they can see what their collection helps to support. This year, the students have a goal of beating
their collection record of 183 pounds, which was set in 2017. Community members may donate soda tabs to the effort by dropping them off at Lehman’s Feedstore, 6141 Lincoln Highway, Wrightsville. The Bible Adventure Program is a legal, state-approved program that allows public school students to be dismissed from school for biblical education. It is sponsored by Joy El Generation, and it is a nonprofit, nondenominational faith-based ministry for children in grades three through 12. For more information on the soda tab collection or on the Bible Adventure Program in general, readers may call Laurie Lehman at 717-801-8807 or visit www.joyelgeneration.org. we will be going with an organization called Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS),” reported youth leader Zane Harnish. MDS is a nonprofit Lititzbased organization consisting of a network of Anabaptist churches that provide volunteers to help those affected by disasters in the United States. While MDS’ main focus is on cleanup, repair and rebuilding homes, volunteers also seek to spread Christian love and promote hope and faith among those in need. “We will be working with other church groups,” Harnish noted. “It will be primarily construction work to repair houses that were damaged during Hurricane Florence (in September 2018).” In the past, the youth group has traveled to other countries, including Costa Rica and Belize, for its mission work, and has also volunteered in Lancaster and Reading. Harnish said there will be at least 20 yard sale stands set up outdoors on the day of the event. “The majority of the stands (at the yard sale) are (manned by) people in the community having their own sales,
Give Local York, the 24-hour Give Day for York County, will return on Friday, May 3. Last year’s Give Local York event raised $1.478 million for 211 nonprofit organizations in just 24 hours. This year, 320 organizations whose work benefits York County residents have registered to participate in Give Local York. On May 3, from midnight to 11:59 p.m., people may visit www.givelocalyork.org from any computer, smartphone, or device to donate to any of the hundreds of local organizations participating. The goal for this year’s giving event is $3 million. Dollars raised that day will be stretched by a pool of $335,000, funded by UPMC Pinnacle, the York County Community Foundation, the Powder Mill Foundation, the Arthur J. and Lee R. Glatfelter Foundation, United Way of York County, Cultural Alliance of York County, J. William Warehime Foundation, and PNC Bank. The stretch pool serves as a percentage match for participating organizations. Additionally, organizations have the opportunity to win more than $22,000 in prizes on Give Day. On May 3, York County will be transformed into a communitywide celebration of generosity. Give Local York activities will take place all over York County, with nonprofits working together to host events from Dillsburg to Delta and Hanover to Hellam and everywhere in between. Give Local York in Dillsburg will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Dillsburg Farmers Market, 1 N. Second St., Dillsburg. but the youth group also has a food stand and sells perennials as well,” said Harnish. “Each year over the past few years, we’ve raised about $3,000 to $4,000 from this event, and we hope to continue that trend.” He noted that members of the youth group actively participate in the fundraiser. “The youth group helps with setup and tear-down before and after the event, as well as working to sell mulch ahead of time,” Harnish said. “During the event, they help by going out on mulch deliveries and assisting with any other odds and ends that need to be taken care of.” Harnish noted that the popular springtime event, which began in 2010, is designed as a community outreach as well. “In addition to raising funds for the youth group, we hope to host an event that brings people outside to hopefully enjoy some nice weather and that allows the community to interact and grow closer,” he stated. Columbia Battles in Crossover Action by Sam Valentin
The Tide did not go Columbia’s way last Tuesday night as they dropped a game 10-0 at Donegal High School. The Tide did not right itself either as they dropped a game Wednesday night at Elco 10-0. Donegal struck first plating five runs in the bottom of the first. Columbia answered swatting two singles in the top of the second inning but could not capitalize on the
offense. Donegal scored another in the bottom half of the second and, again, Columbia answered, slapping two singles that they failed to capitalize on. Donegal did not look back after their huge first inning while Columbia just could not bring runners in even though they had chances. It comes down to capitalizing. Juniors Zac Nikolaus, Matthew Gambler, Ryan Redding, and Matthew McCleary led the way for the Tide
against Donegal each recording a hit. McCleary picked up the unfortunate loss on Tuesday night, his first of the season, but did record a strikeout on ten hits while throwing 75 pitches. On Thursday April 11th the offense was clicking and Columbia picked up a win over Northern Lebanon High School, 13-4. The Tide jumped out to an early lead when the offense exploded in the top of the second and again in the fourth inning. Redding led the way with a perfect 5-5 at the plate. He recorded two doubles, a
homer and finished with four RBI’s. McCleary and Carter Houck legged out triples while Gambler drove in three and Ryan Hinkle drove in a pair with a double. Nikolaus led the way on the bump, going 6.2 innings and giving up three earned runs on nine hits and 101 pitches. He also helped his cause at the plate by recording a hit that scored one. This was his first win of the year, now 1-1 on three appearances. Devin Sullivan came in to record the final out.
As a team, Columbia batted .410 while scattering 16 hits for their 13 runs. They also showed some patience earning three walks but will want to bring down the strikeouts as they were caught looking 11 times. This brings the boys record to 3-7 overall and 3-6 in the league on the year. They sit in the middle of the pack in Section Four behind Lancaster Catholic, Annville- Cleona, and are tied with Pequea Valley. Lancaster Mennonite and Lebanon Catholic fill out the section. The team fairs better at home with a record of 2-3 while only 1-4 on the road. They average five runs a game on nine hits. The Tide, as a team, is currently hitting .255 average with a slugging percentage of .369 and a fielding percentage of nearly .900 so errors are rare.
Redding is leading the league with an absurd .526 batting average and slugging percentage of .947 to date. Nate Resch is top three with his on base percentage of .583, not to far behind are teammates Redding and Nikolaus with .565 and .500 averages respectively. SOFTBALL The softball team followed the boy’s lead against the undefeated Donegal Indians, dropping their game 22-7 Tuesday afternoon. The scoring started early for Columbia when they scored three runs to open the game but Donegal answered loudly and quickly scoring eight runs. Columbia did not go down silently or easily scoring four more runs on nine hits. Emily Waugh got the start but See Columbia pg 10

them ahead of Lebanon Catholic, who has yet to win a game on the season. Back on April 11, Columbia gave up seven runs in the top of the second inning and couldn’t recover. They suffered a two-hit, 11-1 loss at home. Waugh was tagged for the loss, striking out three and walking one while giving up 14 hits. TRACK The track teams both lost at Annville-Cleona on Tuesday April 16. The boys lost 132-7 while the girls fell 139-2. Annville-Cleona won every single event with the Tide scattering a few second and third place finishes throughout the meet. Justin Elliot has the only win of the year in high jump, clearing 5-6. suffered the loss, recording one strikeout against four walks. Malina Mowrer walked two over three innings of work. One day later, the Tide lost a close one to Elco at home, 8-5. The ladies did manage to out-hit Elco, 11-6 but could not seem to outscore them. Elco got the early start, scoring two in the top of the second. Columbia, with single runs in the second and third frames, tied the score at 2-2. Both teams plated two runs in the fourth before Elco forged ahead with a three-spot in the fifth. The two teams played even up again in the seventh frame, scoring one run each, but the damage was done. Waugh again started in the circle for the Tide recording eight strikeouts. This drops the ladies to 1-9 midway through the season and places
with Lancaster Mennonite and Northern Lebanon. All three teams are looking to capture their first win. They happen to be Columbia’s next opponents so hopefully they can muster out a win or two to brighten up the season. They have four more meets to round out the season, one being a non-conference meet that involves multiple schools. The Tide travels to Lancaster Mennonite on April 23rd in a matchup that will give one of the two schools their first win of the season. Jordan Sabina owns Columbia’s two wins for the year in long jump and high hurdles. She posted a time of 20.6 in hurdles and jumped 13-10 in the long jump. The girls are 0-4 for the season, tied for last place with Lancaster Mennonite and Northern Lebanon. They too will look to get their first win on April 23rd against Lancaster Mennonite.

Allard picked up the final win on the track with an 11:18 in the 3200m. Martin added a third event win by clearing 5-4 in the high jump but Drake Brown powered the field events with a top throw of 40-5.5 in the shotput and 137-10 in the discus. Dylan Zurin tacked on the final victory with a 19-1 leap in the long jump. The Golden Knights found themselves on the opposite side of an 8267 final on the 16th when they tangled with Gettysburg. This time Eastern claimed wins in 11 events including two of the three relays. Reed, Druck, Cappeluti and Emig opened the meet with a win in the 3200m relay while Brown, Dustin Robinson, Mason Behm and Hailu Barrow picked up a win in the 400m relay. Martin posted his typical triple win day with Brown adding victories in the shotput and discus to his relay win. Martin took the 110H with a time of 14.8 and the 300H in 43.0 and claimed the high jump by clearing 5-4. Brown took the shot with a toss of 40-6.5 and the discus with a heave of 134-2. Allard picked up the final victory on the track with a 4:49.6 in the 1600m. Barrow topped the pole vault competition with a top height of 9-6 while Zurin claimed the long jump with a leap of 19-5.5. Weston McClain nabbed the final Eastern win with a toss of 126-4 in the javelin. In between the two regular season dual meets the Golden Knights traveled to Dillsburg for the Arctic Blast Invitational at Northern York. Martin led a trio of boys on the day while Olivia McLain paced a quartet of Lady Golden Knights. Martin’s stellar day saw him take gold in the 110H with a time of 15.16 and fourth in the 300H with a 41.87. Allard and Emig both picked up fifth place finishes with Allard doing his work in the 1600m (4:48.77) and Emig in the 800m (2:08.71). McLain posted the top finish on the girl’s side, taking third in the 1600m with a time of 5:26.72. She added a 10th place finish in the 800m with a 2:36.29. Eastern York took two of the top eight spots in the javelin with Emily Smith throwing 974 to claim fifth while Sarah Moore settled at 91-8 to finish seventh. Emily Hoyer’s 28.69 in the 200m was good enough for ninth place.

BASEBALL The baseball team’s most recent three game stretch saw the Golden Knights enjoy the backend of a twogame winning streak as well as suffer the pains of a two-game slide. The lone win of the three pack of games came on April 11th with the Golden Knights blowing by Fairfield, 11-3. Eastern York scored in five of the seven innings starting with matching three run frames to open the contest. Jacob Bardo played a part in both of those frames with a first inning double that kicked off the scoring and a bases loaded walk in the second that made it 5-1. Bardo added a fifth inning sac fly to finish with a team high four RBI. Evan Rishell and Owen Shimmel split four RBI with Rishell rapping out three singles while Shimmel, who finished the game hitless, drove in runs with a second inning fielder’s choice
New Bridgeville Memorial Fire Company will host a Stop the Bleed training session on Wednesday, May 1, at 6:30 p.m. at the fire hall, 2870 Furnace Road, Red Lion. The training session is open to anyone who is interested in learning simple, effective ways to treat bleeding emergencies. The class will be taught by Kimberly Wentz, a registered nurse and medical program teacher from York County School of Technology. The class size will be limited to the first 50 people, and registration is required. that he matched as part of Eastern’s two run fourth. Rishell’s run producing singles came in the second and sixth innings, the latter of which finished the scoring for the game. Drew Dellinger enjoyed the run support and picked up the win for five innings of work. He struck out five with no walks while allowing three runs on seven hits before giving way to Quinton McNew who finished the game. McNew added three more strikeouts to the team’s tally and did not surrender a hit over two innings of work. The Golden Knights took a step back one day later with a 10-4 loss to West York. Bardo got the start and took the loss for covering the first two and two-third innings. Dyson Renn pitched the final one and a third inning of the five-inning loss. Both pitchers finished with two strikeouts and combined for five walks. Emitt Silar and Dellinger each finished with one hit and one RBI but only Dellinger’s hit was responsible for his RBI. That came with his fifth inning single that capped Eastern’s scoring. Silar picked up his RBI courtesy of a third inning fielder’s choice that made it 6-3. Silar’s lone hit came in the first when Eastern’s turned his double into a run on a West York error. Eastern York suffered another setback on April 16th, falling to Delone Catholic 1-0 despite posting an 8-5 edge in hits. The Golden Knights had three players finish with two hits (Taylor, McNew and Shimmel) but were unable to string enough together to mount an attack. Shimmel took the hard luck loss despite scattering five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. In fact, he surrendered only on hit during the decisive fifth inning when Delone scored the game’s only run. The Squires other base runners came from walks, one of which was intentional, and a fielder’s choice that broke up the 0-0 tie.

Funk’s Riverview Greenhouses Sets Grand Reopening
Dan Funk (right), owner of Funk’s Riverview Greenhouses, and his daughter Breanne are eager for customers to see the new high-tech, 6,000-square-foot greenhouse that has been added to their Washington Boro business. A grand reopening is set for April 27. farming operation. Later, some of the brothers began an excavation business and the others continued to raise crops, turkeys, and produce, selling their products in farmers markets. As is often the case in farming families, the brothers’ wives also helped - along with Roy and Mildred’s more than 30 grandchildren. One of those brothers, LeRoy, married Jeanette, and in the mid1960s, they built a greenhouse on their farm, which was the start of Funk’s Riverview Greenhouses. That first structure was used to grow tomatoes for sale in May and June. Later, the greenhouse was used to start tomato plants for replanting outside. It was during this time that the Funks also used the upper area of the greenhouse to grow flowering hanging baskets to sell at markets. Throughout the 1980s and ’90s, the balance shifted from tomatoes to flowers. To meet the need for more ornamentals, a second greenhouse was built to accommodate 6,000 geranium plants and 200 additional hanging baskets. Since the

mid-’90s, LeRoy’s son Dan; Dan’s wife, Janelle; and their children have continued growing the greenhouse business. Funk’s now offers ornamental and vegetable plants as well as a selection of fruit trees, landscape shrubs, and other trees. “Our family business has been blessed by God,” Dan said. “It’s been a great experience having our four children grow up helping in the business.” On Saturdays during April and May, customers will often see Dan and Janelle’s children, including Brad, Amanda, and Eric, along with Eric’s wife Kristen, in the greenhouses. Breanne’s
knowledge has impressed shoppers, who often say, “We want to see the girl who knows so much about the plants.” Breanne has learned about vegetable plants because she also plants the adjacent fields full of the same species that customers buy. She then sells her crops at the greenhouse and her roadside stand. In addition to Breanne, another popular person at Funk’s Riverview Greenhouses is Grandpa LeRoy, who is now in his 95th year. He will often be sitting outside, ready to chat or help water the plants. “But watch out,” Dan said with a laugh. “He is still a salesman. He’ll try to sell you one more flower than you actually came for.” Janelle keeps social media users updated on Facebook, and she helps in the greenhouses when needed. Other relatives and local teenagers also work at Funk’s. In 2018, Dan realized it was time to update the original greenhouse, so in June, old structures began disappearing to make way for the brand-new 6,000-squarefoot, gutter-connect-style greenhouse. While the new greenhouse can accommodate more people and products, the Funks did not create more parking. “Our desire (is) not to trade the good Washington Boro soil (for) blacktop,” Dan said. “God has blessed this area of the country with great soil and a wonderful

climate. Because of that, home gardeners can enjoy success in vegetable and flower planting. Each year, more and more customers keep coming back to choose from our wide selections of flower, vegetable, and fruit plants.” During February, March, and April, the Funk family prepares 50 varieties of tomatoes as well as 25 pepper varieties, hundreds of herbs and succulents, 5,000 geraniums, 1,700 hanging baskets, 15,000 Proven Winner and other potted plants, perennials, and about 10,000 flower and vegetable market packs for sale. Then, in May, they break out the ice cream. During the month of May, the Funks offer free ice cream cones. The tradition began years ago when Dan told his children not to eat their snacks in front of
customers, so the family decided they would share with the customers. Some days also feature a cornhole challenge. “If the kids beat Mr. Dan, they get a free plant,” Dan said, noting that he usually lets them win. The business continues during the summer and fall with a roadside produce stand. Folks are invited to visit the grand reopening on April 27, and they may return in April on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The business is closed on Sundays. In May, the business is open until 8 p.m. on weekdays and until 6 p.m. on Saturdays. Funk’s Riverview Greenhouses, 2277 River Road, Washington Boro, will hold a grand reopening on Saturday, April 27, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. to celebrate the addition of a new 6,000-squarefoot, high-tech, temperature-controlled greenhouse to the seasonal business. To add to the festivities on April 27, Brian’s Barbeque will sell meals while supplies last. Door prizes will be awarded, and Funk’s will pay each customer’s sales tax. Customers are welcome to visit each of the five greenhouses on the property. The newest structure offers a close-up view of the Susquehanna River, which runs only 100 yards away. The sides of the greenhouse open not only for the views, but also for air flow and direct sunlight. This new structure has enabled the Funk family to grow higher-quality plants using natural ventilation, better lighting, and a more consistent temperature, and it aims to enhance customer experience through wider walkways and improved views. “Because of the faithful patronage of our customers, we continue to enhance our nursery. It’s been a busy year remodeling, but we’re very excited with the results,” said owner Dan Funk. Dan’s daughter Breanne, who performs most of the daily work, said she enjoys reconnecting with yearly customers and meeting new ones. She added, “I love this time of year: sowing seeds, planting all the different plants, working in my garden, and seeing everything grow.” The strong, family-connected Funk enterprise started many years ago, before there was a greenhouse. Roy Funk was born in 1896. As a young man, he married Mildred Shultz from Washington Boro, and together, they raised nine sons. When the boys grew up, they operated a diversified
