PA Hero Walk will benefit veterans
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Whether you walk, run or ride a bike, you’re invited to the PA Hero Walk, hosted by Post 1306 of the Catholic War Veterans. The event will be held on Saturday, May 20. It will step off from Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., and end in Fisherman’s Park, 111 Collins Road, Falmouth.
“We have people who run. We have people who bring their kids in strollers. We have people who bring their dogs,” explained Mike Mastriania, post commander. Same-day registration will begin at 7 a.m., with bike riders departing at 8 a.m., runners taking off at 8:10 a.m. and walkers departing at 8:20 a.m. The route will cover 14 miles along the Susquehanna River. Advance registration is encouraged and is available at www.pretzelcitysports.com.
“We will have shuttle buses, so people can park at water stations along the route and take the shuttle to the Crossings starting at 7 a.m.,” Mastriania noted. “They can also take the shuttle back to their car after the event.”
Prizes will be awarded for the top finishers, and all participants are invited to return to the Catholic War Veterans post, 250 N. Seventh St., Columbia, for a chicken barbecue dinner beginning at 3 p.m.
Proceeds from the event will benefit PA Hero Walk, a group of veterans that walks from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh every year in June to raise awareness for veterans’ needs, said Donna Ernst, post manager. This will be the first time Post 1306 has held its event since 2019.
The mission of the Catholic War Veterans is to provide services for God, for country and for home, Ernst commented. “We support all veterans,” she shared. “We have 650 members from across Lancaster County.”
Post 1306 moved to its current Columbia location in 2013. It held
Community Celebration for Glatfelter Memorial Field
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Community has always been at the heart of Glatfelter Memorial Field, located at 1249 Lancaster Ave., Columbia. Now you are invited to take part in a Community Celebration at the field on Saturday, May 6, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“We wanted to give families something to do and give kids a little bit of old-fashioned fun,” said Robin Gamby, secretary of the Gladfelter Memorial Field Trust board and fundraising chair. “If you are looking to come out and have some old-fashioned fun, please join us. We want to bring the community together.”
its first Hero Walk in 2014. In addition to being a private club, the group organizes multiple events and efforts throughout the year, including visiting veterans in VA hospitals, participating in parades, hosting an Easter party and a Christmas party for families, distributing food to veterans throughout Lancaster County and holding flag retirement ceremonies on Flag Day, June 14.
Both Ernst and Mastriania said the club helps them fulfill their
desire to serve veterans. “My father was a veteran. He served in the Army,” Ernst shared. “My dad was my heart.”
Mastriania served in the Marine Corps from 1980 to 1983 and has been a member of the Catholic War Veterans since 2016. He said he not only likes helping other veterans through the organization, but also enjoys the club atmosphere and the bonds that have formed between members. “We are always looking for more members,” he said. “We
get a lot of positive feedback from our members. They say it feels like they are with family when they are here.”
Orders for the chicken barbecue must be received by Monday, May 8. A limited number of extra meals will be available on the day of the event. The chicken barbecue is open to the public in addition to people who are participating in the PA Hero Walk. To purchase tickets, call Ernst at 717-951-9117 or Mastriania at 717-715-3354.
The festivities will include food trucks Cafe 301 and Kurtz’s Concessions. Gift card bingo will be played in the large pavilion starting at noon. A variety of games and activities will be available for children as well. “We are going to have a dunk tank, which is something I know the kids love every year when they have it at National Night Out,” Gamby noted. The event is a fundraiser for the field, which is a private facility and does not receive any municipal or state funding. Expenses at the field include completing the funding of the brick entrance restoration, which is approximately 95% funded, and covering the costs of continuous maintenance and improvements of the facility. The park includes a large pavilion, a small pavilion, basketball courts, football and baseball fields and a track. It is used by a variety of groups throughout the year, including CBAA baseball and softball teams, the Columbia High School girls’ softball team, Dayspring Christian Academy’s track team and the PA Gremlins traveling football team. Additionally, community members have reserved the facility for events such as a community Easter egg hunt, birthday parties, reunions, the National Night Out event and the Boy Scout can drive.

She noted that Glatfelter Field has been the site of many memories for residents of Columbia and the surrounding area. “This is definitely
a community site,” she explained, adding that the field is a spot full of nostalgia. “A lot of people grew up at this place. They played baseball when they were little, or they participated in other sports here. This event is a way for people to give back while also having fun.”

Big Hug Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization that works to feed those who are homeless and hungry throughout Lancaster, York, Berks, Lebanon and Dauphin counties. The organization was started in late 2021 by Linda Than.
When Than was a little girl in Vietnam, she and her family would gather around the dinner table to share meals and stories of their day. Than came to the United States just

over three decades ago, initially living in Washington, D.C., for a few months before moving with her family to Lancaster. During her time in the nation’s capital, Than saw many people who were homeless, and she felt a need to help. Big Hug Inc. is based on Than’s joy for cooking and caring for others, interests that came from her late mother.
Since Big Hug’s founding, Than has organized a five-person board of directors, which includes the Rev. Louis Butcher, former pastor of Bright Side Baptist Church. The board meets monthly and supports Than in her efforts to feed those in need.
Big Hug is seeking assistance from local churches and community organizations that have commercial kitchens and gathering space where Big Hug volunteers may prepare and serve meals on weekend days. Currently, two or three facilities per county are needed for this purpose. Thus far, Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Columbia has invited Big Hug to provide its services one Sunday in June and another in August. Volunteers and financial contributions are sought, as well.
Big Hug has set a goal to feed more than 2,500 people before the end of 2024. Than also hopes to one day have a food truck that will allow her to take her mission into the streets, directly to people in need.
What are the benefits of riding a bike? How about a healthy dose of confidence, goal setting and personal growth? That’s the mission of Lifecycles, a nonprofit Christ-centered mentoring program committed to building young people of character through bicycling.
The organization kicked off its ninth season on April 24. A girls’ team meets on Monday evenings at Warwick Township Municipal Park, 315 Clay Road, Lititz. Boys’ teams meet on Tuesdays at Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta; on Wednesdays at Warwick Township Municipal Park; and on Thursdays at Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. Groups ride from 6 to 8 p.m.
“This is a positive and encouraging environment to learn how to set your goals and grow with other teenagers,” said Lee DeRemer, who founded the organization with his wife, Marcie. “There’s no bullying, and everybody works together. Everyone is in a group for their skill level. We are open for boys or girls between the ages of 12 and 18, and everything we provide is 100% free - the bikes, the meals, the equipment, helmets, everything.”
Along with meeting once a week for their season, which runs through August, Lifecycles teens also participate in special challenge
rides. Five teams will be riding during the last week in July and the first week in August, Lee said. One team will travel from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. Two boys’ teams and one girls’ team will each ride a loop around Lake Champlain on the border of New York and Vermont, covering 380 miles in seven days. “Our 15 most advanced riders will be riding from Portland, Maine, 530 miles all the way to Valley Forge, Pa.,” Lee noted.
In addition to the challenge rides and the weeknight rides, teens are also invited to participate in Saturday rides throughout Lancaster County. “These are opportunities to try something new and be out all day or almost all day long,” Lee said. “They are opportunities for mentoring and more confidence building.”
He emphasized that although this season has already begun, teens can join Lifecycles at any time. “We have a lot of kids who are involved in spring sports, and we tell them, ‘Hey, just wait until school is over and come on out that first week in June and start right up with us,’” he shared. “They haven’t missed anything by missing the first few weeks.”
Lee said the success of Lifecycles has relied heavily on volunteers, and the organization is always looking for more people to help.
“After nine years of doing this, it’s really wonderful to be part of the community where there’s so many people pitching in and so many different ways to help one another,” he remarked. “We are really thrilled to be a part of that.”

Celebrate small-town fun at Mayfest
When it comes to Mayfest, an annual celebration of Maytown, this year’s event is going to be bigger and better than ever, said Linda Good, event coordinator.
“This will be the first year we are having it in two locations,” she stated. “We are limited with space right in Maytown, and since we had so many vendors who were interested, and so many things we wanted to do, we had to look for a second location.”
Mayfest will be held on Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities will take place in historic Maytown as well as at Lloyd H. Fuhrman Memorial Park. The park is located at 190 Rock Point Road, Marietta.
In downtown Maytown, featured festivities will include a house and yard tour of 10 homes. Tickets for the house tour will be available on the day of Mayfest at the Maytown/East Donegal Museum, 4 W. High St. During Mayfest, the museum will display textiles, coverlets and quilts made in Maytown, and displays of school yearbooks will be featured in the Church of God, 14 W. Elizabeth St. Additional festivities will include the High Street Tavern food stand, serving lunch and
dessert in the yard behind the museum; demonstrators of historic crafts outside the museum; and a 2 p.m. program featuring the renewal of vows of a Maytown couple. Second-grade students will perform songs and dances; pictures from a first-grade art contest will be on display at Maytown Reformed Church, 11 E. Elizabeth St.; and a traditional maypole dance will be performed by alumni dancers. “I am looking for people who have danced the maypole when they were in elementary school and who would be interested in dancing it again this year,” Good remarked.
A guided bus tour will take visitors to historic sites throughout town, and penny candy will be available for kids at Ye Olde Shenk’s Store. Also at the store, cookies, whoopie pies and other treats will be for sale. The Church of God will feature a quilt display, a town cakewalk will be held following the maypole dance, and costumed storytellers will be located throughout Maytown. A historical scavenger hunt with prizes will also be offered. At the park, festivities will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. “We will have 87 vendors who will offer a variety of items,” said Megan Shank, who is

organizing that portion of Mayfest. Several food trucks will be on hand, live art will be featured and cash giveaways will be held. Live music will be performed in the park by Steel Radiance from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and by Handsome Greg beginning at 2 p.m. Shank noted that she is still looking for student volunteers to help with the event. Anyone interested in volunteering may call 717-426-1526 and leave a message.
Maytown Community Yard Sale
Horn Farm Center, 4945 Horn Road, York, will offer several programs. There is a fee, and registration is required by calling 717-7576441, emailing education @hornfarmcenter.org or visiting https://hornfarmcenter.org.
Animal Tracking will be offered on Sunday, May 7, as part of the Horn Farm Center’s new Windows to Wild Lands series, taking place from 1 to 3 p.m. on the first Sunday of every month. The series offers entry-level, hands-on lessons in age-old primitive skills. On May 7, participants will learn how to use their five senses and pattern recognition skills to gather information from the imprints an animal leaves on an area. The program will focus on tracking (identifying footprints), trailing (looking for disturbances), and signage like hair, bone, and scat.
A May Foraging Walk will be held on May 7 from 10 a.m. to noon, giving community members an opportunity to learn about the foods and medicines found at this time of year in the natural world. The program will also emphasize ethical foraging and ways of giving back to the land from which one takes. Beginners and experienced foragers are welcome.
Sweet Potatoes 101 will be offered on Wednesday, May 10, from 5 to 8 p.m. Attendees will learn techniques used at the Horn Farm when growing sweet potatoes for distribution through the farm’s CSA program. Topics will be ground
preparation and bed formation, irrigation, weed and pest management, harvesting, curing, storing and preparing, and starting slips (baby sweet potato plants) versus buying them. The program will include hands-on practice in ground preparation and bed formation, and each participant may take home 10 to 15 slips.
Horn Farm will host an Understanding Your Garden Q&A on Thursday, May 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. This session will consist of conversations based on the questions that participants submit. The group will spend time looking at relevant spaces on the farm, and attendees should bring their walking shoes and a water bottle. Potential topics include soil biology; botany and plant health; weed and insect identification; garden design, techniques, and management; watering and irrigation practices; and harvesting and processing.
A Spring Foraging Foundations Weekend will take place on Saturday and Sunday, May 13 and 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. This weekend-long session will provide foundational knowledge for those interested in finding and gathering wild food and medicine. Attendees can expect a diverse array of lectures, conversations, general plant walks, hands-on exercises, and opportunities for tasting both raw and prepared wild foods. A list of needed supplies is available at the
Mayfest is an annual celebration to mark the founding of Maytown, which dates to May 1, 1760. “Mayfest is a wonderful time to come out and learn about the history of Maytown, have lots of fun and greet people that you haven’t seen for a while,” said Good.
The rain date for Mayfest will be Sunday, May 7, from noon to 5 p.m. For more information on Mayfest, search for the event on Facebook.
aforementioned website. The price of the class includes both days of instruction. Early registration is encouraged, as class size is limited. Botany for Gardeners will be offered on Saturday, May 20, from 9 to noon. Gardeners will explore
plants’ inner workings and cycles of growth and reproduction and delve into the primary plant families of the vegetable garden. This program will include classroom instruction and a field walk. Bring a notebook and dress for the weather and walking.

Credit union helping employee search for kidney donor
First Capital Federal Credit Union is asking for the public’s help to find a living kidney donor for an employee.
Lorie Hagar was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease eight years ago. In February 2022, her doctor told her the disease had progressed to Stage 5, and it was time to start the transplant process. Hagar has been placed on the deceased donor transplant list, but the wait time for a deceased donor kidney can be five or six years. As an alternative, Hagar is looking for a living donor, as this method could cut the wait time from years to months, and the kidney could last twice as long.
To support Hagar in her search, First Capital created the Share Your Spare marketing campaign. First Capital has placed posters in its branches and yard signs around the perimeters. Lamar Advertising has gifted a billboard for four weeks to help spread awareness. The billboard is located on state Route 74 in front of Spark Orthodontics.
The campaign coincides with National Donate Life Month, April. First Capital staff members dressed in blue and green and wore Donate Life bracelets on April 14 in observance of National Donate Life Blue and Green Day, which is intended to increase awareness of the importance of organ donor registration.
For more information, search for “Lorie Hagar needs a kidney” on Facebook or search for Lorie Hagar’s Instagram page.

Homefields posts Open Farm event
Homefields will host an Open Farm event at its Care Farm, 150 Letort Road, Millersville, on Saturday, April 29, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. This drop-in event is free and will offer community members an opportunity to learn about the 2023 community-supported agriculture (CSA) program hosted by the farm.
Attendees may visit the greenhouses and the bee habitats and insect hotels; check out the farm’s tractors; make a DIY planter; and take home a plant. Farmer-guided tours will be offered at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. The event will also include food samples and a selfie station.
At the farm’s information station, attendees may learn about volunteer opportunities as well as the CSA program. Those who grab a coupon and sign up by Sunday, April 30, will receive a free week of vegetables.
Guests are also invited to bring a picnic to the event. Homefields will provide meadow tea and water; attendees are asked to bring their own water bottles, as Homefields is seeking to reduce single-use plastics on the farm.
Free, off-street parking is available at the farm. To learn more, visit www.homefields .org/farm Homefields is a 501(c)(3) organization.
