May Day will celebrate spring
BY CATHY MOLITORISOnce a week since March, students at Columbia High School have been practicing the waltz. They are learning the traditional dance as part of May Day, a celebration held at the school that welcomes the coming of spring.
The waltz is performed by members of the May Day court and their escorts at the event, said Alexandria Gamby, junior adviser for May Day.
This year’s May Day celebration will be held on Saturday, May 6, at 7 p.m. in the gym at Columbia High School, 901 Ironville Pike. The event is open to the public.
“Please join us for the welcoming of spring,” Alexandria commented. “We honor the May Day court and celebrate with entertaining performances.”
BY CATHY MOLITORISYou are invited to explore 55 activities throughout the region, including things to do, see and eat. Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) has created a unique bucket list to highlight activities and places in America’s 55th National Heritage Area.
“In March 2019, York and Lancaster counties were officially designated the nation’s 55th National Heritage Area,” explained Megan Salvatore, visitor service representative for SNHA. “National Heritage Areas are places where historical, cultural and natural resources combine to form a cohesive, nationally important landscape. It’s obvious why some places are designated as national parks, but National Heritage Areas are more complex. Our
bucket list showcases some of the reasons why these two counties have been nationally designated.”
Among the activities on the list are learning about the power of wind turbines at the Turkey Hill Trail Overlook, exploring the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, learning about early science and medicine at Haldeman Mansion, checking out some of the oldest farmers markets in the country and searching for a whimsical gnome garden in Akron.
As Salvatore explained, the SNHA bucket list runs throughout the year. It includes seasonal activities and events, as well as year-round activities to explore. “Participants can share their bucket list experience by snapping photos, posting them to social media and tagging @susqNHA in the post,” she noted. If participants complete at least five
items and submit their information on the SNHA website, they can receive an SNHA sticker.
SNHA started the bucket list idea to keep people in the region busy during the pandemic in 2020. The list focused specifically on Columbia that year and then branched out to include the river towns of Marietta and Wrightsville the following year. Last year was the first time the organization launched a bucket list covering the entire region. Salvatore came up with the tasks on the list, noting that they are engineered to explore partners and sites offering a diverse mix of heritage, culture, recreation and refreshments unique to the region. A collaborative effort with the SNHA staff narrowed down the final 55 activities, she said, noting that number was chosen because the region is the 55th designated
National Heritage Area.
“I would encourage residents to rediscover and learn new things about the region, using the Susquehanna National Heritage Area bucket list,” Salvatore remarked. “The bucket list tasks open conversations about our collective past and create fun talking points with visitors to the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center and Zimmerman Center for Heritage. It’s an interesting way for visitors to understand the national connections this region has woven throughout history.”
A digital version of the list can be found at www.susqnha.org. Paper copies are also available at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, and the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville.
Members of this year’s May Day court are Mallory Conroy, Emily Gambler, Mercyangelis Gonzalez Morillo, Savannah Helton-Urbassik, Ella McCarty, Nayana Peterson, Alexis Phillips, Jocelyn Sanchez and Brie Sullivan Escorts are Zakaria Aitelmajouh, Owen Broome, Chase Dishongh, Mitchell Dishongh, Daèzjon Giles, Aiden Miller, Chris Sabino, Isaiah Spencer and Gage Wolf. May Day has been a tradition in Columbia for more than threequarters of a century. Alexandria noted that this marks the 78th year of the event. “It brings together the community, students and parents,” she explained. “Each year, a junior and a sophomore work alongside each other and a committee filled with members of the community.”
Seniors are chosen by their peers to participate in the May Day court, and the girls choose a male senior to escort them. “Students of the senior class vote on a May queen,” Alexandria noted. “The May queen is announced before the waltz.”

Oleg and Audra Vrzheshch and their
ValleyView Alliance Church of Hellam invites the community to hear missionaries Oleg and Audra Vrzheshch share their life stories at Spring Missions Fest, to be held from Friday, May 5, through Sunday, May 7.
As a college student in Ukraine, Oleg was saved from a downward spiral when missionaries shared the Word of God with him and he accepted Jesus as his Savior. Oleg then made it his mission to reach out to young students, offering God’s love and salvation to them.
Audra, too, felt called to spread God’s message to the schools of Ukraine, where she would eventually meet Oleg. The couple would later found the organization Ukraine for Christ, which now includes more than 100 members and conducts various outreach ministries to students and teachers
as well as members of the military and young professionals.

Martial arts center marks first anniversary
Lancaster Wing Chun, a local martial arts training center, is celebrating its one-year anniversary.
An official Wing Chun training center, the facility has direct ties to Great Grandmaster Ip Man, the teacher of Bruce Lee, who is credited with popularizing the marital art style.
Ip Man was born in Foshan, China, on Oct. 1, 1893. During his life, one of the
students he passed his knowledge to was his son, Grandmaster Ip Chun, who will celebrate his 99th birthday this July. In turn, Ip Chun passed along what his father taught him to Lancaster Wing Chun’s Master Colin Ward of the Northern Wing Chun Kung Fu Association (NWCKFA). Ward established the Lancaster Wing Chun Association on April 15, 2022, to create a place where people can learn traditional Ip Man Kung Fu in a safe and supportive environment.
Wing Chun is one of the few martial art systems to be invented by a woman. It is designed for a smaller, weaker individual to overpower a larger, stronger opponent by effectively utilizing centerline theory, speed and power.
The center emphasizes creating a safe environment where Wing Chun theory and techniques can be learned and applied. The goal is for attendees to learn the mechanics of self-defense
Walking tour to focus on architecture
A walking tour of Lancaster’s Chestnut Hill neighborhood has been planned for Monday, May 8, by the Serendipity Group of the Newcomers & Neighbors of Lancaster.
The Chestnut Hill area is renowned for its diverse and exceptional architectural styles, noted Rosanne Sietins, the club member who will conduct the tour. Based on a tour Sietins took with architect Gregory Scott, this activity will feature information about design details of various structures, as well as the design rivalry of architects C. Emlen Urban and James H. Warner.
The Newcomers & Neighbors’ Serendipity group undertakes frequent activities like this walking tour, including visits to unusual locales, including museums, renowned gardens, and theaters. The group plans its activities at a breakfast meeting held on the first Monday of each month.
To register for the tour, contact Dottie Yuska at dyuska@comcast.net. More information about the Newcomers & Neighbors is available at www.lancasternewcomers.com.
and how to de-escalate and even walk away from a conflict. Wing Chun emphasizes calmness and relaxation to avoid a fight as its highest priority. However, in the event that avoidance and deescalation strategies fail, participants also learn techniques for self-defense to minimize personal injury.
The style has been learned by both males and females from a young age, but it continues to be practiced during peoples’ retirement years. The goals of current members include gaining confidence,
practicing discipline, managing stress and anxiety, finding relaxation and calmness and acquiring the benefits of cardiovascular health, all in the context of making new friends.
To learn more, visit www.lancasterwingchun.com, call or text 717-208-2258 or stop by the center at 246 Manor Ave., Millersville. Open enrollment for classes is currently underway. Both inperson and virtual training options are available, and a complimentary trial experience is offered.
Missionaries frompg
Attendees will be able to meet Oleg and Audra in person while enjoying an ice cream social in the church lobby at 6:30 p.m. Oleg and Audra will speak at the Sunday worship service at 10:15 a.m. on May 7. After the service, there will be a potluck
dinner in the lobby at noon. Visitors do not need to bring a dish to share.

“Titanic” slated at Fulton Theatre
The Fulton Theatre will present “Titanic” on select dates through Sunday, May 21. The production was originally slated for March of 2020 but was canceled due to the pandemic.
On April 11, 1912, the RMS Titanic set sail on its maiden voyage, destined for America. A total of 2,200 passengers and crew members were on board. In the early morning hours of April 15, the RMS Titanic was lost at sea after hitting an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean. Fifteen hundred people lost their lives.
The musical tells the ship’s tragic story but highlights what the ship represented: the dreams of the passengers and crew members. It also shares
what happened to these people’s dreams and social standings when all seemed lost. As the show unfolds, audiences meet a variety of first-, second, and third-class passengers alongside members of the
crew. The musical, with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and book by Peter Stone, premiered on Broadway in April of 1997. It won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
The same year the musical
premiered, a film of the same name was released. The film and musical have no relation beyond the source material. For tickets and more information, visit www.the fulton.org.
Cabaret to feature Kristen Brewer

Servant Stage’s monthly cabaret series features some of Lancaster’s singers and storytellers in an intimate concert setting.
