ocated northwest of Hallam along Pleasant Valley Road, Kreutz Creek Cemetery is home to gravesites dating back to the 18th century, including the graves of hundreds of military veterans. It’s managed by a nonprofit association in Hellam Township, and the association is seeking new volunteer members for its board of directors to serve as managers and caretakers of the property. His son was killed in action in 2004 in Iraq while serving in the Army and is buried on the grounds. “I decided I would volunteer with the cemetery,” he said of his involvement, which began in 2005. “It’s important to me that veterans’ resting places are taken care of.” Cemetery board president Ned Haines has been volunteering with the cemetery for almost 25 years, taking over for his father, who was also a volunteer. “My dad, my mom, and just recently my older sister are buried there,” he said. “My grandmother and grandfather are buried there, and my wife and I own a plot there. Family is the strongest draw for me to continue to volunteer.”

Historic trolley tours will be offered throughout the day as well, with information provided on the significant role Columbia played in the railroad history of the state. At the Columbia Historic Preservation Society museum, 21 N. Second St., an O-scale model train layout will be open on the first floor, along with a 2,300-square-foot HOscale layout on the second floor. Proceeds from Columbia Railroad Day will benefit the Columbia Historic Preservation Society’s museum. “Join us for the day and bring your family,” Vera said. “There is something for every age group and there’s a lot to see and do. Come out and enjoy the day and enjoy Columbia.” For more information on Columbia Railroad Day, search for “Columbia Historic Preservation Society” on Facebook.

“We’ll be displaying some rare artifacts from our archives, and we’ll have guest speakers who will talk about the history of the railroad,” Vera stated. A variety of vendors will be set up, along with several Civil War groups and a World War II transportation group. Columbia Railroad Day will also feature the opportunity for participants to ride on a speeder. As Vera explained, a speeder is a small, gaspowered cart that rides on the train tracks, pulling small cars with seats. “It was used to transport workers along the track,” he said. Speeder rides will be given from the railroad crossing at Fourth and Manor streets out to Malleable Road and back.

Golf Outing from pg 1 Since July 1, 2021, GSS has served 475 people, and more than 200 individuals have graduated from the organization’s programs and are in stable housing. Starting this year, GSS will offer its clients in-house counseling, and it will expand the women’s shelter in Ephrata. The organization also opened a men’s shelter in Ephrata on April 1. Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 15th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 10, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meals, beverages, and snacks will be provided, and participants will have chances to win prizes throughout the golf course. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS. “Anytime anyone in the com-
munity is participating - whether that’s through monthly donorship or coming to our events - they’re really making a difference right here in their own community,” said Mandy Johnson, director of community engagement at GSS. “We’re so grateful because without the support, we literally couldn’t do the work we’re doing.” “We live in a great community, and it’s being made even better with what GSS does every day,” stated Rachel Stebbins, EPC marketing director. “The Golf Outing is a fun way to enjoy the great outdoors, meet some fellow do-gooders, and help put a dent in homelessness!” Preregistration is required and can be completed up to 48 hours before the event. For more information about the EPC Golf Outing, to register to play, or to sponsor the event, visit www.epcgolfouting.com. in the coming months. The new location was developed to feature a unique setting, culinary offerings and beverage options including a Pennsylvania-based cocktail andwine menu. The menu offers fresh locally sourced American pub fare and artisan baked goods, which are prepared and baked daily in the Woodstone fire-deck oven. A handcrafted 28,000-square-foot building on 13 acres makes up the new campus featuring Douglas fir timber frame construction. The inside space is comprised of a production area, casual dining hall, loft and event/performance space known as “The Virgil Room.” Private event spaces will be available for a variety of sized groups and functions. Outside is a timber framed patio complete
with a bar and stone fireplace, and the plan is to add firepits. The outdoor spaces will open in the near future. South County opened its doors to the public for lunch, dinner and full bar service on April 13. Reservations for dining table service are highly recommended and can be made through the Tock reservations system. Bar and communal table service is available by walk-in only. In addition, a large selection of beer and new merchandise will be available for sale in the retail area. The new brewery is located just off of Exit 14 (Leaders Heights) on I-83 and offers ample on-site parking. Kondor and Haines emphasized that volunteers can help out as much or as little as their schedules allow. “The need to get things done varies during the year,” Haines said. “We may go as long as six months without a burial, and there’s nothing to do. We have projects for everybody.” Volunteer opportunities include maintaining cemetery records, accounting tasks, lawn mowing, weed trimming and monitoring settling of new gravesites. One of the most important jobs at the cemetery is knowing how to locate burial plots on a cemetery map and make sure bodies are
buried in the correct places, Kondor said. “Ned does most of the plotting, and I’ve been training in case I need to do that on my own, but eventually, somebody else is going to need to learn how to do that,” he stated. Today, the cemetery contains more than 2,000 gravesites, and many are unoccupied, waiting for those who have reserved them. Sites are still available for purchase in the developed sections of the cemetery, and there is an undeveloped area that offers potential for limited future expansion. To learn more about volunteering, contact Haines at 717755-2060.

To better serve the needs of the community, the York County Food Bank will move its warehouse operations to a new location in Emigsville in May. The move is intended to allow the food bank to continue serving the community with greater efficiency. For the past two years, the food bank has operated out of its Haines Road facility in East York. Kinsley Properties allowed the organization to use the space at no cost. In addition to the warehouse move, the food bank announced that its drive-through food distribution will take place at 2530 Cape Horn Road, York, on the first and third Tuesdays of each month from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The food bank’s main office will remain at its location at 254 W. Princess St., York. Anyone who is struggling to put food on the table is encouraged to call 717-846-6435 or visit www.yorkfoodbank.org.

Give Local York (GLY), a 24-hour giving event in York County, will return on Friday, May 6. From midnight to 11:59 p.m., donors may support local organizations with monetary gifts by visiting www.givelocalyork.org. Nearly 300 nonprofits whose work benefits York County will participate. Last year, more than 11,000 donors came together to raise $3.7 million. As it celebrates its fifth birthday, the event will bring in-person and online events back in full force. Nonprofits will provide street fair-type activities on the streets of downtown York during First Friday, a Give Local York-themed York Revolution game at PeoplesBank Park, and a finale concert to follow outside the stadium. Participating nonprofit organizations, volunteers, and sponsors will be invited to celebrate their efforts as the totals are tallied until midnight. The Give Local York livestream, GLY Live, will present a real-time virtual event dashboard that will showcase total dollars raised, top participating organizations, leaderboard updates, a donor feed, and more. The goal for this year’s Give Local York is for more than 11,100 donors to make a gift.

Northwest Bank has been recognized by Forbes as one of the World’s Best Banks for 2022, marking the third consecutive year that Northwest has made the list. Northwest was ranked 25th in the United States. Forbes’ World’s Best Banks are determined by a customer survey that ranks financial institutions by key satisfaction factors, including trust, customer service, digital services, fees and financial advice. Forbes partnered with market research company Statista on this year’s listing. To determine the 2022 list, more than 45,000 customers in 27 countries were polled by Statista. All banks were rated based on overall recommendation and satisfaction and according to five sub-dimensions. Four of the top 10 banks were from the U.S, and the U.S. was the most represented country overall, with 75 banks receiving awards. Japan followed with 45 banks. In February, Northwest Bank was also recognized by Forbes as one of America’s Best Midsize Employers for 2022. For additional information about Northwest Bank, visit www.northwest.com.
